• GPO errors filling up event viewer

• Error 1069 the service did not start due to a logon failure

  Our CruiseControl.NET service on Win2003 Server (VMWare Virtual) was recently changed from a service account to a user account to allow for a new part of our build process to work. The new user has "Log on as a service" rights, verified by checking Local Security Settings - Local Policies - User Rights Assignment, and the user password is set to never expire. The problem I'm facing is every time the service is restarted, I get the 1069 error as described in this questions subject. I have to go into the properties of the service (log on tab) and re-enter the password, even though it hasn't changed, and the user already has the appropriate rights. Once I enter the password apply the changes, a prompt appears telling me that the user has been granted log on as a service rights. The service will then start will no problems. Not a show stopper, but a pain none-the-less. Why isn't the password persisting with the service?

• Enable group policy for everything but the SBS?

  I have created a new group policy to disable IPv6 on all machines. There is only the one default OU, no special configuration. However, this policy shall not apply to the SBS its self (nor the other DC at another location on a different subnet) because those machines do depend on IPv6. All the rest do not. I did see a recommendation to create a new OU and put that machine under it, but many other comments say that is extremely messy and not recommended - makes it high maintenance when it comes to changing other group policies. How can I apply this single group policy to every machine except for the domain controllers? PS - Yes, I understand IPv6 will soon be the new standard, but until then, we have no intention to implement it, and it in fact is causing us many issues when enabled.

• Application crashes when installing on Windows 7 but not on Windows XP

  At my company, we're migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7. We've got 2 home made applications written in C# with the .NET framework 3.5. They use ClickOnce to be installed. We're in the test phase and the installation of these soft crashes on some Windows 7 machines and doesn't on others. The difference between these machines should be the configuration of the policies. The only error message we've got is this one: I tried to find some logs somewhere but there's nothing neither in the Event Viewer nor in the applications log (wich are poorly logged, then I'm not expecting miracle from this side :( ) These applications: work with FTP servers use WCF use old deprecated libraries (as I'm not at work, I'll edit this post when I'll have the info) use nHibernate 2 use LLBLGen use a deprecated Infragistics library export data into Excel files Did you encounter such an issue while migrating? Or do you have an idea where I should investigate on?

I work in this big IT company(they have and AD environment ofc) and I've seen first hand how nice integration and log-in-from-anywhere(roaming?) profiles can be. So I wanna create the same setup at home, where I have 3 machines. Mostly logging in with the same profile and preserving the settings(things like UAC being off, a few group policies I've customized, things like that). How can I achieve something like this?

• Best cloud based IT Systems management services out there?

  Our startup organisation is growing fast in 2 different office locations. That brings new challenges and headaches. Our entire company is cloud based, and I am looking for a good product to manage our remote systems. Currently we do not have on-site AD servers, we are using the Windows Azure AD services, so cannot rely on group policies at this stage. I would like to be able to achieve the following: (they are all laptops) Remote Desktop Support Patch management Lock down software on machines (restrict them) Monitor and manage systems Other benefits would be good, but if I can achieve the ones listed above, it will go a long way. We have a combination of Windows 7 pro & Windows 8 & 8.1 machines. I am currently using Windows Intune, but it is really limited. Really just a glorified patch enforcer. • Set generic iptables rules?

  This may be a really dumb question but how can you open a port on multiple interfaces without defining the interfaces? For example how do I open port 22 on all interfaces? On my machine I have some interfaces that are dynamic and may or may not be available so I have to set "generic" rules. • Export policy configuration from eTrust ITM 8.1

  Currently we are using the Enterprise AV Solution eTrust ITM 8.1. The licenses are running out in october and we are going to replace eTrust with another AV solution. The eTrust Server is running on Windows Server 2003 SP2 with an MS SQL 2000 Standard Edition. The problem is that we've got many different policy - sets which we have to redefine in the new AV solution. Is there any way with eTrust ITM 8.1 to export the different policies as csv, pdf ... whatever? I really dont want to do that manually (that would mean one print screen after the other ;-) ) Thank you very much. grub

• How can I limit other (administrator) users access to my profile?

  Hi, We in our club have a computer with Windows 7 Professional that every club member may use. And everyone has their own separate account. Those accounts have to have administrator priveleges since I want everyone to be able to install any software and use any feature they want. However, there is a single thing that they shouldn't be allowed to do - that is, look into another users' profiles. Now when anyone goes to 'c:\Users(Any User Name)' a little prompt appears that this folder is secured and whether you really want to look inside. Simply clickinh 'ok' give you access to any profile. I tried disabling taking ownership for Administrators group in Group Policies but that had no effect. How can I effectively prohibit administrators looking into each others' profiles and documents?

• Broken corba object references

  I'm working on a homework and got stuck. The task is to serve objects using a default servant. But when I try to use the reference, weird things happen. Some part of corba prints a stack trace, but no exception is thrown. The problem happens when the server receives the reference and should call some method on it. The reference is then shortened and doesn't contain the object ID (which means that my servant implementation can't do anything reasonable). • Help to argue why to develop software on a physical computer rather than via a remote desktop

  Remote desktops are great and many times a blessing and cost effective (instead of leasing expensive cables). I am not arguing against remote desktops, just if one have the alternative to use either remote desktop or physical computer, I would choose the later. Also note that I am not arguing for or against remote work practices. But in my case I am required to be physically present in the office when developing software. Background, I work in a company which main business is not to develop software. Therefore the company IT policies are mainly focused on security and to efficiently deploying/maintaing thousands of computer to users. Further, the typical employee runs typical Office applications, like a word processors. Because safety/stability is such a big priority, every non production system/application, shall be deployed into a physical different network, called the test network. Software development of course also belongs in the test network. To access the test network the company has created a standard policy, which dictates that access to the test network shall go only via a remote desktop client. Practically from ones production computer one would open up a remote desktop client to a virtual computer located in the test network. On the virtual computer's remote desktop one would be able to access/run/install all development tools, like Eclipse IDE. Another solution would be to have a dedicated physical computer, which is physically only connected to the test network. Both solutions are available in the company. I have tested both approaches and found running Eclipse IDE, SQL developer, in the remote desktop client to be sluggish (keyboard strokes are delayed), commands like alt-tab takes me out of the remote client, enjoying... Further, screen resolution and colors are different, just to mention a few. Therefore there is nothing technical wrong with the remote client, just not optimal and frankly de-motivating. Now with the new policies put in place, plans are to remove the physical computers connected to the test network. I am looking for help to argue for why software developers shall have a dedicated physical software development computer, to be productive and cost effective. Remember that we are physically in office. Further one can notice that we are talking about approx. 50 computers out of 2000 employees. Therefore the extra budget is relatively small. This is more about policy than cost. Please note that there are lots of similar setups in other companies that work great due to a perfectly tuned systems. However, in my case it is sluggish and it would cost more money to trouble shoot the performance and fine tune it rather than to have a few physical computers. As a business case we have argued that productivity will go down by 25%, however it's my feeling that the reality is probably closer to 50%. This business case isn't really accepted and I find it very difficult to defend it to managers that has never ever used a rich IDE in their life, never mind developed software. Further the test network and remote client has no guaranteed service level, therefore it is down for a few hours per month with the lowest priority on the fix list. Help is appreciated.

• iPhone Simulator 3.x not listed after upgrading to XCode 3.2.3 Beta4 with OS 4.0

  I've been having some problems, & since you guys are the smartest devs I thought I'd just ask you. When I last installed Xcode 3.2.3 Beta 2 (OS 4.0 support), it had all the iPhone Device & Simulator 3.x. Now, updated to Xcode 3.2.3 Beta 4 (OS 4.0 support), it no longer lists 3.x SDKs for either simulator or device in XCode. When I run an app that was written for 3.1.2, the current SDK is listed as "base SDK missing" I'm aware that 3.2.3 changes the BASE SDK to 4.0, but how come none of the 3.x devices are available either? When I go to: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs The only two files available are: iPhoneSimulator3.2.sdk iPhoneSimulator4.0.sdk However, when I go to: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport 3.0 3.0.1 3.1 3.1.1 3.1.2 3.1.3 3.2 4.0 (8A274b) I've tried re-installing the most recent XCode DMG to no avail. I'm creating a simple web site for a local company who uses GoDaddy Windows Shared hosting and I'd like to create the project using MVC version 2. The first time the guy said he hadn't heard of MVC and that GoDaddy doesn't support it. The second time I called they said they only support MVC on dedicated hosting and he wasn't sure about MVC 2 specifically. The third time I called the guy said I could run MVC 2 on shared hosting. Anyone that actually has experience know?

  Hi all, I am in the process of developing an iPhone application that communicates with a number of Bluetooth devices that all support Serial Port Profile - well I assume that it is SPP as they show on my MacBook as Serial Port DevB etc. I understand that iPhone OS 3.x does not support SPP - is that correct? Does anyone know if that has been "fixed" in OS 4? I've seen reports of OS 4 supporting keyboards, but is that a locked version of HID, or will SPP be available via the SDK? Kind Regards, Nige.

  I am writing an ebook reader that supports the epub format (i have the parsing of open epub working), but I would like to support the reading of Adobe DRM locked epubs. I have read threw the adobe digital editions site (faq and support pages) and googled, but alas as yet I have not found any docs on the api to: authorise the pc using the users adobe id creds and decrypt the epub for parsing by my app. Does anyone have any pointers to docs or apis? I would prefer apis in Python, C++. But any api is better than nothing ;-) UPDATE1: i am writing my app on Desktops (linux, mac and windows)

  Hello, So I need your help please! I've created a UITableViewController: ContactDetailViewController. In IB in the nib file, I've added a view ahead of the table view and hooked it up to headerView - a UIView declared in the .h file.   After deploying a WCF RESTful service that i created using the REST started kit, i got several errors that i managed to solve following this post: http://www.edoverip.com/edoverip/index.php/2009/01/30/running-wcf-on-godaddy Now i'm stuck with this error: IIS specified authentication schemes 'Basic, Anonymous', but the binding only supports specification of exactly one authentication scheme. Valid authentication schemes are Digest, Negotiate, NTLM, Basic, or Anonymous. Change the IIS settings so that only a single authentication scheme is used I saw that others got to this point without a solution. GoDaddy support dont know nothing. Is it possible at all? Are there any web hosting services that you know that support that?

  Hello, I'm having this annoyning problem giving this message in the console: Failed to launch simulated application: iPhone Simulator failed to find the process ID of com.iAndApp.BlockPop. When trying to Build and Run, the application builds fine. The simulator starts but doesn't start the application. However, it manages to do something since the icon for the app is installed in the simulator. I have been searching to find the answer and tried a couple of things, none that worked. This happens for both new and old projects. I.e. when I create a new project I will receive the same error message. I've tried several projects of which all get the same error, so it's not related to the code (and successful builds proves it). Among other things I have updated to xCode 3.2.2. in order to try to solve the problem. Using Mac OSX 10.6.3.   Oracle Advanced Security is an optional licenced Oracle 11g Database add-on.  Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) offers two different features:  column encryption and tablespace encryption.  11.2.0.1 TDE Column encryption was certified with E-Business Suite 12 as part of our overall 11.2.0.1 database certification.  As of today, 11.2.0.1 TDE Tablespace encryption is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12. What is Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) ? Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) allows you to protect data at rest. TDE helps address privacy and PCI requirements by encrypting personally identifiable information (PII) such as Social Security numbers and credit card numbers. TDE is completely transparent to existing applications with no triggers, views or other application changes required. Data is transparently encrypted when written to disk and transparently decrypted after an application user has successfully authenticated and passed all authorization checks. Authorization checks include verifying the user has the necessary select and update privileges on the application table and checking Database Vault, Label Security and Virtual Private Database enforcement policies.

• Problem using ‘useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy’ & supportedRuntime in an application

  Hello, I've modified a couple of different applications' .config file like this: <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> <supportedRuntime version="v4.0"/> </startup> When I did this for devenv.exe.config (VS 2005 - don't ask :) ), things work great - most of the Visual Studio used .NET 2.0 but I was able to make use of an assembly targeting .NET 4.0 framework. I tried to do the same thing for a custom .exe, which happens to be based on MS CAB (slightly modified) and has a hybrid mix of WPF and WinForms content. As soon as I modified this application's app config file, I started getting this exception, sometime during application startup: The Undo operation encountered a context that is different from what was applied in the corresponding Set operation. The possible cause is that a context was Set on the thread and not reverted(undone). System.InvalidOperationException: The Undo operation encountered a context that is different from what was applied in the corresponding Set operation. There's a big long stack trace that doesn't show anything in my application code directly (just a bunch of MS assemblies). If I modify the application's .config file to this: <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> </startup> i.e.I remove the supportedRuntime element, then the application doesn't throw this exception. But when I go to the point in my code where I try to load my .NET 4 assembly, if fails with this: System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly '' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded. I guess this is expected. I have two questions: 1) Any idea why I'm getting the System.InvalidOperationException exception when I modify this application's configuration file to include the supportedRuntime element, adding .NET 4 support and any suggestions on what I can do about it? 2) If the answer is "no idea why/don't know what you can do about it", then is possible for my .NET 3.5 SP1 code (C#) to provide more fine grain support for conditionally adding .NET 4 runtime support for a certain assembly(ies) without converting my entire application to target .NET 4, or without using the declarative config file approach? At some point I would convert the entire application to target .NET 4, but for the short term this is daunting task and I'm hope for some short term solution/hack. Thank you very much for any advice you can give!
