• Looking for Unix tool/script that, given an input path, will compress every batch of uncompressed 100MB text files into a single gzip file

  I have a dump of thousands of small text files (1-5MB) large, each containing lines of text. I need to "batch" them up, so that each batch is of a fixed size - say 100MB, and compress that batch. Now that batch could be: A single file that is just a 'cat' of the contents of the individual text files, or Just the individual text files themselves Caveats: unix split -b will not work here as I need to keep lines of text intact. Using the lines option is a bit complicated as there is a large variance in the number of bytes in each line. The files need not be a fixed size strictly, as long as it's within 5% of the requested size The lines are critical, and should not be lost: I need to confirm that the input made its way to output without loss - what rolling checksum (something like CRC32, BUT better/"stronger" in face of collisions) A script should do nicely, but this seems like a task someone has done before, and it would be nice to see some code (preferably python or ruby) that does atleast something similar.

• How can I get the current OU with a PowerShell login script?

  I am setting up a Terminal Server 2008 which will be used by different client organisations, each with multiple individual user accounts. I would like each client organisation to have a drive mapped to \server\clients\ Their OU name is also their client name, so I would like to be able to find their current OU and then use it for the mapping command. The OUs are hierarchicals, so it is the bottom-most OU name I need. Example OU: Dedicated Clients\AjaxCorp Should get a drive mapped to \\server1\shares\AjaxCorp Any suggestions on how I can get the OU? I am sure it must be easy, I just haven't figured it out... I did find information about how to do this with VB script, but as it is a whole new environment I thought it would be nice to use PowerShell instead.

  In Facebook, some links to articles or videos appear to be genuine links, but in fact there are leading to some "content viewing" Facebook apps, like "Dailymotion", "The Guardian", or "Yahoo!". Those apps usually require access to my email address, basic info, birthday, location, plus right to post on my behalf. Some even say in small letters "To use this app, you will be upgraded to Facebook Timeline": Workaround: Copy the name of the article/video Paste it into Google within quotes First result is the original unencumbered content. I don't want to install Facebook spyapps that provide zero value, so I do this every time. QUESTION:Is there a Greasemonkey script or similar, that would perform these 3 steps for me? I am using Chrome on Linux. I hesitated to post this question on WebApps, but over there they are clear that such questions should be posted on SuperUser.

• Problem with return 2 libc method

  Hi, I'am trying to understand the return2libc method. I'am using an ubuntu linux 9.10, 32 bit with ASLR disabled. In theory, it sounds quite easy, overwrite the saved eip with the address of system() (or whatever function you want), then put the address to which system() should return and after that, the parameter for system, the "/bin/bash"-string. But what happens is that my exploit keeps segfaulting the vulnerable program. I assume something with the system()-address went wrong. This is what I did so far: Determined the address of system(): (gdb) print system $1 = {<text variable, no debug info>} 0x167020 <system> (gdb) x/x system 0x167020 <system>: 0x890cec83 I used the subsequent x/x system because those 3 bytes returned by print system looks like an index in some sort of jumptable (PLT?), so I assume 0x890cec83 is the right address which is used to overwrite the saved eip. After that I determined the address of the /bin/bash string in memory, using a small C program which basically consists of this line: printf("Address of string /bin/bash: %p\n", getenv("SHELL")); Then I looked a little bit around in the memory and fount /bin/bash: (gdb) x/s 0xbffff6ca 0xbffff6ca: "/bin/bash" After I gathered this information, I filled the buffer: (gdb) b 9 Breakpoint 1 at 0x8048407: file victim.c, line 9. When I'am continuing the execution, victim segfaults on some strange address and certainly not in 0x890cec83: (gdb) cont Continuing. Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0x0804840d in main (argc=Cannot access memory at address 0x41414149 ) at victim.c:11 11 } Has anyone an explanation or a hint what happens here and why the execution isn't redirected to 0x890cec83? Thanks in advance, any hint, and be it only vague, would be appreciated. I have no idea why this doesn't work.

• mootools slideshow not working with JQuery. Need help !

  I am working on a site http://tapasya.co.in where i just impemented mootools slideshow. But I noticed that menubar that i was using stopped working, it was supposed to drop horizontaly but it is not being displayed now. I have used jquery for it. Please see the source of the web page. What can be the problem ? Mootools conflicting with javascript or some other problem. If I tries to use $.noConflict() it throws me an error in script Uncaught TypeError: Object function (B,C){if(B&&B.$family&&B.uid){return B}var A=$type(B);return($[A])?$[A](B,C,this.document):null} has no method 'noConflict' I tried the given solution below.   I am working on a site http://tapasya.co.in where i just impemented mootools slideshow. But I noticed that menubar that i was using stopped working, it was supposed to drop horizontaly but it is not being displayed now. I have used jquery for it. Please see the source of the web page. What can be the problem ? Mootools conflicting with javascript or some other problem. Problem is, when they click tweet, it just reloads the twitter box, empty. I want it to load something new, like a "thank you, now fill in this email form" and show a mailchimp form.   Hi, I am running a bash script as a background job. The bash script calls a time-consuming executable. If I am not wrong, the running of the bash script is the parent process and the running of the executable is the child process. I now want to stop the whole running by killing the parent process which is the background job kill -9 $(jobs -p) The terminal shows that the running of the bash script is killed. But the running of the executable still hangs on the output of top. I just wonder how to also kill the child process? Thanks and regards!

• change directory automatically on ssh login

  Hi, I'm trying to get ssh to automatically change to a particular directory when I log in. I tried to get that behaviour working using the following directives in ~/.ssh/config: Host example.net LocalCommand "cd web" but whenever I log in, I see the following: /bin/bash: cd web: No such file or directory although though there is definitely a web folder in my home directory. Even using an absolute path gives the same message. To be clear, if I type cd web after logging in I get to the right folder. What am I missing here? EDIT: Different combinations of quotes/absolute paths give different error messages: LocalCommand "cd web" /bin/bash: cd web: No such file or directory LocalCommand cd web /bin/bash: line 0: cd: web: No such file or directory LocalCommand cd /home/gareth/web /bin/bash: line 0: cd: /home/gareth/web: Input/output error This makes me think that the quotes shouldn't be there, and that there's another error happening.
