• Free Typescript editor with definition based code completion feature

  I know that a plugin for Visual Studio exists. However i can't afford VS so i'm looking for a free alternative which can be used to code TypeScript and aware of the .d.ts definition files and can do code completion based on them. I know that Sublime Text and VIM can do syntax highlighting with the correct language definition file. However the biggest advantage of Typescript for me is that ability to give code assistance while coding. Are you aware of any editor which can do this? I'm interested even if it's in an experimental state.

  Whats the best way to get started on iPhone development if you are an expeienced C++ or C# programmer? Most books either assume you know nothing or something. What are the steps to achieve this? For eg: first learn objective C (let's say), next learn cocoa... I am interested in books/resources. I read Getting started with iPhone development from Oreilly (the missing manuals book) but that just provided an over view on the programming and concentrated more on getting your app into the app store. I need need resources that will help be start coding. Other questions: How much of objective C do you need to know? How do go ahead with learning the cocoa framework? Can I directly start on cocoa touch or do I need to know the MAC cocoa framework first? Inputs from someone who was in the same situation (Know c++/c# but no clue about mac programming/objective c/cocoa) would help greatly.

I  have been using the .Net Framework mainly to develop ASP.NET WebApps for some years now and I am moving from using the .Net Framework 2.0 to using the latest features on the 4.x Frameworks, I am planning to document whenever is possible some of the stuff I learn using this space kindly given by the staff of the site. The feedback I get will also be very important for my progress and my plan is to learn a lot from what you guys can teach me with your comments on here.I also found myself with the necessity of putting somewhere code samples because sometimes when you post on forums the entries get locked and you can't do anything to add relevant details on them.   Hi, Some background first- I am new to programming and have discovered it rather late in life; Like many hobbyists, my introduction to the subject has been through php/jquery (yes, i know the popular mood around here... they-are-not-real-programminng-languages ;-) ). I like to believe that I am reasonably competent at what I do in my other life and this developing addiction to coding has taken a very heavy toll on my professional prospects. This is the question: What programming languages next? (No plans to ditch php in the immediate future, that will involve rewriting much of my code) Any absolutely essential books I must read? Is it necessary to join a college/university course? Do I need to ditch my other profession to continue serious learning?   I've been a solo .NET programmer for a small startup for the last 8 years. I've put together some pretty decent software, and I always strived to better myself and conform to best practices, including source control (SVN/TFS). I worked very closely with a team of engineers of other disciplines, but when it came down to the software I was the only one programming. I love the craft of programming and love learning new things to sharpen my tools. In 2 weeks I will be starting a new job in a team of 20 .NET developers. My position will be mid-level, and I will be working under some programmers with incredibly impressive backgrounds. Again, the team aspect of development will be new to me, so I'm looking for some general "new guy" tips that will help me be as effective and easy to get along with as possible from the get-go. Anything goes, including high level tips, and small day-to-day things about communication.

• Naming conventions used for variables and functions in C

  While coding a large project in C I came upon a problem. If I keep on writing more code then there will be a time when it will be difficult for me to organize the code. I mean that the naming for functions and variables for different parts of the program may seem to be mixed up. So I was thinking whether there are useful naming conventions that I can use for C variables and functions? Most languages suggest a naming convention. But for C the only thing I have read so far is the names should be descriptive for code readability. EDIT: Examples of some examples of suggested naming conventions: Python's PEP 8 Java Tutorial I read some more naming conventions for java somewhere but couldn't remember where.

  Do you know where I can find a good example of software design diagrams and specs on the internet? Like UML, specs and similar. I'd like to understand this approach better. Before I just started coding and now I'd like plan more in advance. By diagrams I don't mean made-up examples, but something that would actually be used.   I love Rich Hickey, Clojure and Haskell and I get it when he talks about functions and the unreliability of side-effecting code. However I work in an environment where nearly all the functions I write have to read from the database, write to the database, make HTTP requests, decrement a user's balance, modify a frontend HTML component based on a click action, return different results based on the URI or the POST body. We also use PHP for the frontend, which is littered with functions like parse_str(), which modifies an object in place. All of these are side-effecting to one degree or another. Given these constraints and the side-effecting nature of the logic I'm coding, what can I do to make my code more reliable and function-able?

• Finding Telecommuting Opportunities as a Recent College Graduate

  Reading the answers to hiring practices of remote vs. local employees and freelance programming sites, I would like to add this question to the mix. I am a recent college graduate from an electrical engineering background with 2 years worth of work terms in programming (C, C++, VBA, Matlab, etc.) while I was still in school. While I am interested in learning other software tools (such as Python, Ruby on Rails, Javascript, etc.), I want to use the tools I have now in a telecommuting role while I grow my toolset. Despite having 2 years of work experience (and I've lost track of when I have started programming), my status as a recent college graduate may be an obstacle of my credibility to compete for telecommuting (or in fact any) programming opportunities. I don't know how I can go about finding telecommute programming opportunities for someone with my situation. Overall, many of previous places I've worked at liked my work. What are your suggestions? • Tips for communication between JS browser game and node.js server?

  I am tinkering around with some simple Canvas based cave flyer game and I would like to make it multiplayer eventually. The plan is to use Node.js on the server side. The data sent over would consists of position of each player, direction, velocity and such. The player movements are simple force physics, so I should be able to extrapolate movements before next update from server. Any tips or best practices on the communications side? I guess web sockets are the way to go. Should I send information in every pass of the game loop or with specified intervals? Also, I don't mind if it doesn't work with older browsers.

I have a pretty good familiarity with the main concepts: web app framework, modeling, queues, memcache, django templates, etc. Where I think I'm lacking is in methodology. Architecting the app, using git for versioning, designing an writing unit tests. I'm totally convinced to incorporate these practices in my development style, and have started reading up on them. However I've learned that I'm a much faster learner when I have someone experienced to ask questions to and interact with. IRC channels and forums like stack overflow are great. But sometimes you want something more dynamic that produces results faster. So my question is how can a person find an experienced engineer that is familiar with the technologies he uses and that is willing to give them a couple of hours of Skype coaching sessions per week in return for an hourly fee...

• How can I change the wallpaper using a Python script?

  I want to change my wallpaper in Ubuntu 11.10 (with Unity) in a small Python script. I found the possibility to change it via the gconf-editor in /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename. With python-gconf, I'm able to change the necessary values. Apparently, the gconf string is not read out. If I change it (either via a script or via gconf-editor), the wallpaper remains and in the menu of "Change wallpaper", the old wallpaper is shown. How am I able to change the wallpaper for Unity via a Python script? The following code does work. • Why should I adopt MVC?

  I decided to get my hands wet and got the YII framework for PHP. I created my first application, then created new controller, model and view. Connected to database, got my record passed from controller to the view and printed the hello world. I am confused now. If I have to do the same thing for each page, this seems like a nightmare to me. In each controller I have to do a lot of same operations - declare variables, and pass them to views. I also need to create models for each page and this is all confusing to me. In my idea the main goal of development is to avoid duplication, but what I see here is lots and lots of duplicated code. Please advise and clarify. Maybe you could suggest a good reading about MVC and coding patterns and best practices in MVC. Because so far, it takes much more time to create a small site using MVC than using my own programming schema.

• Does text size and placement on page have an effect on seo

  I was wandering seeing as Google and others keep trying to get more and more 'human' in terms of rating whats good and whats spam, is it known if they take into account the size of a heading ie. an thats font size is 40px is going to speak allot more to the user than a thats font size is 14px.. similarly does placement factor ? ie. a 300 word article at the bottom of a landing page (not in the footer but bellow the useful content) would just be there for seo purposes. i know they look at if your doing things like text-indent:-9999px; and white text on a white background, but what about these more border line practices that both have legitimate uses but also the possibility to be spammy

  I hope someone can help me out here. I am coding a site for a client using the carouFredsel. I am using this because it allows for variable widths with in the slideshow as seen here: http://2938.sandbox.i3dthemes.net/index-old.html. My problems are as follows: to use the built in auto center script the scrolling changes the white space in between images during the transition to fit the width of the wrapper. I need a hack to keep the white space during transition the same, like this: http://2938.sandbox.i3dthemes.net/index.html.
