  • Loading class instance from XML with Texture2D

    I'm having trouble with XML and XNA. I want to be able to load weapon settings through XML to make my weapons easier to make and to have less code in the actual project file. So I started out making a basic XML document, something to just assign variables with. But no matter what I changed it gave me a new error every time. The code below gives me a "XML element 'Tag' not found", I added and it started to say the variables weren't found. What I wanted to do in the XML file as well, was load a texture for the file too. So I created a static class to hold my texture values, then in the Texture tag of my XML document I would set it to that instance too. I think that's were the problems are occuring because that's where the "XML element 'Tag' not found" error is pointing me too.   • Problem connecting to Apache Derby using Hibernate configuration file in Netbeans (ERROR XSDB6)

    I've created a local Apache Derby database in Netbeans, but am having problems when I try and autogenerate the POJO files, using the "Hibernate Reverse Engineering Wizard". Caused by: ERROR XSDB6: Another instance of Derby may have already booted the database C:\CerealDatabase. I've closed any other connections to the database before trying this, and there is no "db.lck" lock file at the time, which indicates there are no connections to the database as I understand it. Does anyone have any ideas? Help gratefully received.

  • Reflection: Is using reflection still "bad" or "slow"? What has changed with reflection since 2002?

    I've noticed when dealing with Expressions or Expression Trees I'm using reflection a lot to set and get values in properties and what have you. It has occurred to me that the use of reflection seems to be getting more and more common. Things like DataAnotations for validation, Attribute heavy ORMs, etc. Have me wondering: What has changed since the days years and years ago when I used to be told to avoid reflection if at all possible? So what, if anything has changed? Is it just the speed of the machines? Have there been changes to the framework to speed up reflection? Or has nothing really changed? Is it still "bad" or "slow" to use reflection? EDIT: To clarify my question a little.

  • Improving performance of fuzzy string matching against a dictionary [closed]

    Hi, So I'm currently working for with using SecondString for fuzzy string matching, where I have a large dictionary to compare to (with each entry in the dictionary has an associated non-unique identifier). I am currently using a hashMap to store this dictionary. When I want to do fuzzy string matching, I first check to see if the string is in the hashMap and then I iterate through all of the other potential keys, calculating the string similarity and storing the k,v pair/s with the highest similarity. Depending on which dictionary I am using this can take a long time ( 12330 - 1800035 entries ). Is there any way to speed this up or make it faster? I am currently writing a memoization function/table as a way of speeding this up, but can anyone else think of a better way to improve the speed of this? Maybe a different structure or something else I'm missing. Many thanks in advance, Nathan

  • Server doesn't notice when client closes socket (.NET CF & GPRS)

    Client written in .NET Compact Framework running over GPRS connection. Client connects a socket to the server. The server accepts the connection. Client sends 62 bytes of data and then closes the socket. Server never detects that the client has closed the socket and is therefore not able to know that the transfer has completed. This code works fine when run over a wireless connection. Any ideas?

    I'm using the RighAWS gem, and mocking at the http level so that the RightAWS code is being executed as part of my tests. Even though all the tests pass, when I do have errors its harder to scan them because of this output. is there a nice way to silence it?

    Is it possible to have a bi-directional web part connection? I am aware that a web part can be both a provider and a consumer but it seems only one connection is allowed between two web parts. What I am trying to accomplish is a bi-directional connection where a field in web part A can update web Part B and a field in B can update web part A.

After changing vip_iface strings to point to right devices, e.g., br0 instead of eth0, and defining "/mnt/loopback|30G", in Cinder's block-device string, am able to navigate through openstack dashboard, error free. In the ruby folder I have created a ruby file in which I have written code to access some model which is present in the rails application using active resource.   • Which techniques to study?

    Just to give you some background info, I'm studying a programming major at a tertiary level and am in my third year, so I'm not a newbie off the street. However, I am still quite new to game programming as a subset of programming. One of my personal projects for next semester is to design and create a 2D platformer game with emphasis on procedural generation and "neato" effects (think metroidvania). I've written up a list of some techniques to help me improve my personal skills (using XNA for the time being). The list is as follows: QuadTrees: Build a basic program in XNA that moves basic 2D sprites (circles and squares) around a set path and speed and changes their colour when they collide. Add functionality to add and delete objects of different sizes (select a direction and speed when adding and just drag and drop them in). Particles: Build a basic program in XNA in which you can select different colours and create particle effects of those colours on screen by clicking and dragging the mouse around (simple particles emerging from where the mouse is clicked). Add functionality where you can change the amount of particles to be drawn and the speed at which they travel and when they expire. Possibly implement gravity and wind after part 3 is complete. Physics: Build a basic program in XNA where you have a ball in a set 2D environment, a wind slider, and a gravity slider (can go to negative for reverse gravity). You can click to drag the ball around and release to throw it and, depending on what you do, the ball interacts with the environment. Implement other shapes afterwards. Random 2D terrain generation: Build a basic program in XNA that randomly generates terrain (including hills, caves, etc) created from 2D tiles. Add functionality that draws the tiles from a tileset and places different tiles depending on where they lie on the y-axis (dirt on top, then rock, then lava, etc). Randomised objects: Build a basic program in XNA that, when a button is clicked, displays a randomised item sprite based on parameters (type, colour, etc) with the images pulled from tilesets. Add the ability to save the item as an object, which stores it in a side-pane where it can be selected for viewing. Movement: Build a basic program in XNA where you can move an object around in an environment (tile-based) with a camera that pans with it. No gravity. Implement gravity and wind, allow the character to jump and fall with some basic platforms. So my question is this: Are there any other commonly used techniques that I should research, and can I get some suggestions as to the effectiveness of the techniques I've chosen to work on (e.g., don't do QuadTree stuff because [insert reason here], or, do [insert technique here] before you start working on particles because [insert reason here])?   • How to force ADO.Net to use only the System.String DataType in the readers TableSchema.

    Howdy, I am using an OleDbConnection to query an Excel 2007 Spreadsheet. I want force the OleDbDataReader to use only string as the column datatype. The system is looking at the first 8 rows of data and inferring the data type to be Double. The problem is that on row 9 I have a string in that column and the OleDbDataReader is returning a Null value since it could not be cast to a Double. I have used these connection strings: Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source="ExcelFile.xlsx";Persist Security Info=False;Extended Properties="Excel 12.0;IMEX=1;HDR=No" Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source="ExcelFile.xlsx";Persist Security Info=False;Extended Properties="Excel 8.0;HDR=No;IMEX=1" Looking at the reader.GetSchemaTable().Rows[7].ItemArray[5], it's dataType is Double. Row 7 in this schema correlates with the specific column in Excel I am having issues with. ItemArray[5] is its DataType column Is it possible to create a custom TableSchema for the reader so when accessing the ExcelFiles, I can treat all cells as text instead of letting the system attempt to infer the datatype? I found some good info at this page: Tips for reading Excel spreadsheets using ADO.NET The main quirk about the ADO.NET interface is how datatypes are handled. (You'll notice I've been carefully avoiding the question of which datatypes are returned when reading the spreadsheet.) Are you ready for this? ADO.NET scans the first 8 rows of data, and based on that guesses the datatype for each column. Then it attempts to coerce all data from that column to that datatype, returning NULL whenever the coercion fails!
