  I am working on two projects that will both implement a Webdav server backed by a MongoDB GridFS. In each case, there is the potential for the system to store tens of millions of files spread across thousands of hierarchical directories. I can come up with two different ways of storing the directory structure: As a "true" hierarchical file system, with directories containing the IDs (_id) of subdirectories and regular files. The paths will be separated by slashes (/) as in a POSIX-compliant file system. The path /a/b/c will be represented as a directory a containing a directory b containing a file c. As a flat file system, where file names include the slashes. The path /a/b/c will be stored as a single file with the name /a/b/c What are the advantages and disadvantages of each, with respect to a "real" folder-based file system?

• Splitting up revenue among development team members on Apple's app store

  A friend and I have started developing an app to put on Apple's app store. Development is going fine, but thinking ahead, we're trying to come up with an easy way to share any revenue coming from our efforts. The app store allows you to deposit your revenue into a single bank account, but there's no easy way to split revenue among several people. How do (small) dev teams split up revenue on their products, on, and off the app store? As far as I can tell, banks don't offer an easy way to automatically split the balance on an account 50-50 (or any other percentage, for that matter), especially on a regular basis. So how do teams deal with this? We're not incorporated, and we don't have an official business set up. We're considering depositing all the money into one of our accounts and manually transferring half the money to the other person, but this isn't sustainable over long periods of time. Is there a low-cost, sustainable, automatic process for handling these finances?

  As the subject goes; once a software architect puts down the high level design and approach to a software that is to be developed from scratch, how does the team ensure that it is implemented successfully? To my mind the following things will need to be done Proper understanding of requirements Setting down coding practices and guidelines Regular code reviews to ensure the guidelines are being adhered to Revisiting the requirements phase and making necessary changes to design based on client inputs if there are any changes to requirements Proper documentation of what is being done in code Proper documentation of requirements and changes to them Last but not the least, implementing the design via object oriented code where appropriate Did I miss anything?   I've been developing for 6-7 years but never in a particularly agile way. With the latest project I'm trying to make our development process more professional, and more agile. We're using Pivotal Tracker to track the project and have gathered some pretty well thought out stories. We're also trying to keep some of our (Prince2/Waterfall mindset) project managers happy. So far I've got them to accept that requirements always change priorities always change some of the requirements won't be delivered if you fix the time scale you should fix the time scale short sprints and regular review is good However they still feel like they need to get a better grip of roughly how much will be delivered within a certain time. I've come up with a spreadsheet to demonstrate what we might expect to get done in a range of 4 different timescales. Questions Are we setting ourselves up to fail Are there better ways to do this

  Trying to create a bash script that opens gnome-terminal, and then runs ls to display the contents of a directory, but it just opens gnome-terminal. I will be creating some other scripts that also use multiple commands. My script: #!/bin/bash gnome-terminal ls -a /examplefolder EDIT: To clarify what I'm trying to achieve. I'm trying to create a script that will open gnome-terminal, list the contents of /examplefolder, and then be ready for regular terminal usage. Is this possible, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

• How can I find files quicker than find or locate?

  I have been using find command to find files on my 1 tb hard disk. it takes very long. then I used locate which proved to be faster with regular update using updatedb. But the limitation of locate is that I cannot find files with certain size or modified/created time. can you suggest me any ideas on how to find files at more speed or in that case how to pipe output of locate command in a way that all other information like size, time, etc. can be displayed or redirected to a file.

WebCenter is basically the new Portal framework in the Oracle stack - and one key thing that portals do is work with content, allowing you to compose and publish content from files as well as save and store content. In this demo you'll see how using a set of taskflows provided by WebCenter you can add a file management, creation and viewing capabilities to a regular ADF application. To try this out you don't need any fancy content management system - we'll just use your file system for now. All you need is the WebCenter extension installed in JDeveloper, and then you can follow the demo on your own JDeveloper instance. You'll define a connection to your content repository you'll be able to add a bunch of pre-built WebCenter taskflows into your page. • How will Deja-Dup operates when backing up to an external USB drive?

  I want to set up regular backups, and deja-dup seems like a nice tool. However, I want to put my backups on an extension USB drive that I have, not on a remote network location. Naturally, this drive is not always connected. If I configure deja-dup to backup to a directory on this drive (e.g. /media/extention/backup), what would happen? Will it prompt me to connect the drive when it is missing (the desired behavior), or just fail silently? Is there some way to tweak it to do so? I can roll my own cron-based backup script that checks if this drive is mounted, but I would really prefer to use an existing, integrated tool.

• Goal completions 10x higher in dashboard

  I have the following table in my Dashboard: Page path level 1 Visits Goal Completions ----------------- ------ ---------------- /sub1/ 994 1,295 / 102 3 /sub2/ 10 1 I know my conversion rate is 10-20%, and that actually in this period I only had 183 goal completions under /sub1/. My goal is set as a regular expression for a particular page (/success?.*), and I have a funnel set up which tracks the page before the goal (/action). The actual urls hit would be /sub1/action then /sub1/success?1234 and /sub2/action then /sub2/success?1234. Why is my table in my dashboard giving me wildly wrong numbers? Have I done something wrong?

  The controller is detected by the OS, and shows up in lsusb, and I can configure it with jstest-gtk, but Live For Speed in Wine doesn't recognize it as connected. Using Lubuntu 12.04, wine version 1.5.5. P.S. - It worked on a previous install of regular Ubuntu 12.04, using the same Wine version. Have tried installing/overriding/un-overriding various DLL's through winetricks to no avail, including xact and dinput8. Since it worked in a previous install of the same version, I figured it was a configuration error, and that I should ask here as opposed to put in a bug report on winehq. EDIT: I just used both controllers in TORCS... why do they work in native games, but not in wine?

• Can anyone recommend a chorded keyboard for a programmer?

  Pre-emptive strike: It's subjective, but it's also Friday... ;) Inspired by this great question and related to this great question, I have decided to buy a chorded keyboard. (A chorded keyboard, by the way, is one with a reduced number of keys, that must be pressed together, in chords, to give all the possible characters etc. - see wikipedia) Being a programmer means that the keys I use regularly are likely different to a regular Joe (a lot more semi-colons for a start), so I was wondering if any of my fellow programmers had tested a chorded keyboard for use on the battlefield of code? Being a nerd, I'm also interested in the extent to which I'd be able to customise my chorded keyboard. (Macros? Shortcuts?) • Is there a language more general than Lisp?

  I've been programming for a long time, and writing in Lisp (well, mostly Scheme) for a little less. My experience in these languages (and other functional languages) has informed my ability to write clean code even with less powerful tools. Lisp-family languages have lovely facilities for implementing every abstraction in common use: S-expressions generalise structure. Macros generalise syntax. Continuations generalise flow control. But I'm dissatisfied. Somehow, I want more. Is there a language that's more general? More powerful? As great as Lisp is, I find it hard to believe no one has come up with anything (dare I say) better. I'm well aware that ordinarily a question like this ought to be closed for its argumentative nature. But there seems to be a broad consensus that Lisp represents the theoretical pinnacle of programming language design. I simply refuse to accept that without some kind of proof. Which I guess amounts to questioning whether the lambda calculus is in fact the ideal abstraction of computation.

• Museum of Modern Art Starts Video Game Collection; Acquires Myst, Pac-Man, and More

  The Museum of Modern Art is weighing in on the video-games-as-art debate by starting a collection of iconic video games and putting them up for public display. Read on to see what games are included in the initial batch and the MoMA’s reasons behind starting a video game collection. Although the MoMA is slated to grow to over 40 titles, the seed batch is 14 titles including: Pac-Man, Tetris, Sim City 2000, Myst, Portal, and Dwarf Fortress. In the announcement they explain the motivation for building a video game collection: Are video games art? They sure are, but they are also design, and a design approach is what we chose for this new foray into this universe. The games are selected as outstanding examples of interaction design—a field that MoMA has already explored and collected extensively, and one of the most important and oft-discussed expressions of contemporary design creativity. Our criteria, therefore, emphasize not only the visual quality and aesthetic experience of each game, but also the many other aspects—from the elegance of the code to the design of the player’s behavior—that pertain to interaction design. In order to develop an even stronger curatorial stance, over the past year and a half we have sought the advice of scholars, digital conservation and legal experts, historians, and critics, all of whom helped us refine not only the criteria and the wish list, but also the issues of acquisition, display, and conservation of digital artifacts that are made even more complex by the games’ interactive nature. This acquisition allows the Museum to study, preserve, and exhibit video games as part of its Architecture and Design collection. • Temporary R+W CIFS share for non-root accounts?

  I want to set up a cross platform mail client (Thunderbird), and so far I want to use NAS as a profile store. The NAS is CIFS based, and can be mounted on both Windows and Ubuntu. Also the locking works fine for mutex, and setup seems to work as a proof of concept. The problem is the Linux mount. Since I'm using a laptop, I'm not always connected to network, hence, I can't use the /etc/fstab to set up CIFS share with a modified group id. And the share has to be mounted using mount -t cifs ..., which causes it to be owned by root, and owned so badly, that it can't be chowned to the regular user account. This causes read only issues for Thunderbird, which seem to be solved if Thunderbird is launched via sudo. But I would like to avoid that and use a script to mount the share on-demand to a profile location, with profile based privileges and access rights. Is there a way to achieve that?

• Which tips helped you learn touch-typing? [closed]

  I've been learning touch-typing for about two weeks now, and I'm really commited to mastering this skill. Eventhough I'm doing ok with prose already, I'm struggling with programming syntax and even more with keybindings. Those stray you away from the home row more than regular words, and aren't as easy to practice. So I often hunt and peck in order to just get it out, but when reverting to old habits like this, I find it hard to get back into the touch-typing mindframe quickly. One little trick that has helped me so far when getting lost is to reposition every finger on its home row key, and mentally visualize the layout bias of the keyboard, ie the backslash kind of alignment of key columns. It's hard to describe though and probably a bit weird... Hope you guys have better tips !
