• dual boot install--no GRUB

  My computer recently had a hardware upgrade and now runs on Windows 7. I decided to install Ubuntu 11.04 as dual boot using the ISO I got from ubuntu.com downloaded onto my USB stick. Restarting with the USB stick, I was able to install Ubuntu 11.04 choosing the option: Install Ubuntu 11.04 side by side with Windows 7 (or something like that). No errors were encountered on installation. However on restarting, there was no GRUB; the system went straight into Windows 7. Assuming Ubuntu 11.04 was installed on device sdb1, do this: sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt Then do this: sudo grub-install--root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdb Notice there are two dashes in front of the root directory, and I'm not using sdb1 but sdb. Since the command in step 15 had reinstalled Grub 2, now we need to unmount the /mnt (i.e. sdb1) to clean up. Do this: sudo umount /mnt Reboot and remove Ubuntu 11.04 CD/DVD from disk tray. Log into Ubuntu 11.04 (you have no choice but it will make you log into Ubuntu 11.04 at this point). Open up a terminal in Ubuntu 11.04 (using real installation, not live CD/DVD). Execute this command: sudo update-grub Reboot the machine.

  I'm running IIS 7.5 on Windows 7 Ultimate. I've installed PHP Version 5.2.14 using Microsoft Web Platform Installer. I've created a virtual directory and a file with which I can browse it and it returns all the PHP information just fine. I'm trying to install MantisBT, and when I copy all the file to my virtual directory and browse index.php I receive the following error detail: Error Summary HTTP Error 500.0 - Internal Server Error The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred. • Default document not working after installing SP1 on Windows 2008 R2 x64

  We have a web site that should only be available for authorized users. So we deny anonymous access for the site. However we do allow anonymous access to the default page and the login page. When we installed SP1 the behavior of the server changed. Now if the user is trying to access the root of the site, say http://mysite.com, she is redirected to login page rather than the default page. Is there a hotfix to bring back the previous behavior?

• User cannot book a room resource

  Im having a problem with a specific user not being able to book a room resource. No error message is generated at all. The user attempts to add the room as a meeting resource and it simply doesnt register with the resources calendar. I have tested the resource with other accounts and other rooms for this user but it is only this room that is having issues for this user. This Exchange server was migrated from 2007 to 2010. All rooms except for the problem room were created back on Exchange 2007. This new room was created with Exchange 2010. Maybe this clue has something to do with the problem? • In WPF, how do I get a command in a Control Template to bind to a property in a parent?

  I am relatively new to WPF and sometimes it makes my head explode. However, I do like the power behind it, especially when used with the MVVM model. I have a control template that contains a button. I use that control template inside of a custom control. I want to add a property on the custom control that will bind to the command property of the button inside the control template. Basically, it is a combo box with a button to the right of it to allow a user to pop up a search dialog. Since this control could appear on a usercontrol multiple times, I need to be able to potentially bind each control to a different command (Searh products, search customers, etc). • iPhone crash on CoreData save

The time this happend, addEntityForType was called all the way through, creating a new object for the "whereTasted" entity, before the final save: on the entire wine object. When I go through the same procedure again, it works fine. This leads me to believe it's something to do with the app having been run for a while when adding a new location, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts on how I can debug this and get more info the next time this happens?

• C# asp.net EF MVC postgresql error 23505: Duplicate key violates unique constraint

  EDIT: It was issue with database table - dropping and recreating table id column did the work. Problem solved. I'm trying to build web application, that is connected to postgresql database. Results are displaying in view with Kendo UI. When I'm trying to add new row (with Kendo UI 'Add new record' button), I get error 23505: 'Duplicate key violates unique constraint'. My guess is, that EF takes id to insert from the beginning, not the last one, because after 35 (it's number of rows in table) tries - and errors - adding works perfectly. Can someone help me to understand, what's wrong?   Here's a link to my previous question on this same block of code with a working shred example Ok, I'm a C# ASP.NET dev following orders: The orders are to take a given dataset, shred the XML and return columns. I've argued that it's easier to do the shredding on the ASP.NET side where we already have access to things like deserializers, etc, and the entire complex of known types, but no, the boss says "shred it on the server, return a dataset, bind the dataset to the columns of the gridview" so for now, I'm doing what I was told. This is all to head off the folks who will come along and say "bad requirements". • web grid server pagination trigger multiple controller call when changing page

  When I server-filter on "au" my web grid and change page, multiple call to the controller are done : the first with 0 filtering, the second with "a" filtering, the third with "au" filtering. My table load huge data so the first call is longer than others. I see the grid displaying firstly the third call result, then the second, and finally the first call (this order correspond to the response time of my controller due to filter parameter) Why are all that controller call made ? Can't just my controller be called once with my total filter "au" ? What should I do ? Yet when I load an NSManagedObject of the same exact model and entity @"Series" it throws the 'no key value' when passed into the conditions above. Am I missing something? Both the superentity and subentities of itemSeries and itemStudy are nil so they don't inherit from something that has KVC @"type". I'm totally at a loss as to explain what is going on. --- EDIT --- I know no one can explain what is going on... but maybe where to start looking? • TSQL Shred XML - Is this right or is there a better way (newbie @ shredding XML)

  Ok, I'm a C# ASP.NET dev following orders: The orders are to take a given dataset, shred the XML and return columns. I've argued that it's easier to do the shredding on the ASP.NET side where we already have access to things like deserializers, etc, and the entire complex of known types, but no, the boss says "shred it on the server, return a dataset, bind the dataset to the columns of the gridview" so for now, I'm doing what I was told. This is all to head off the folks who will come along and say "bad requirements". • New cast exception with VS2010/.Net 4

  [ Updated 25 May 2010 ] I've recently upgraded from VS2008 to VS2010, and at the same time upgraded to .Net 4. I've recompiled an existing solution of mine and I'm encountering a Cast exception I did not have before. The structure of the code is simple (although the actual implementation somewhat more complicated). Basically I have: public class SomeClass : ISomeClass { // Stuff } public static class ClassFactory { public static IInterface GetClassInstance<IInterface>(Type classType) { return (IInterface)Activator.CreateInstance(classType); // This throws a cast exception } } // Call the factory with: ISomeClass anInstance = ClassFactory.GetClassInstance<ISomeClass>(typeof(SomeClass)); Ignore the 'sensibleness' of the above - its provides just a representation of the issue rather than the specifics of what I'm doing (e.g. constructor parameters have been removed). The marked line throws the exception: Unable to cast object of type 'Namespace.SomeClass' to type 'Namespace.ISomeClass'. I suspect it may have something to do with the additional DotNet security (and in particular, explicit loading of assemblies, as this is something my app does). The reason I suspect this is that I have had to add to the config file the setting: <runtime> <loadFromRemoteSources enabled="true" /> </runtime> .. but I'm unsure if this is related. Update I see (from comments) that my basic code does not reproduce the issue by itself. Not surprising I suppose. It's going to be tricky to identify which part of a largish 3-tier CQS system is relevant to this problem. One issue might be that there are multiple assemblies involved. My static class is actually a factory provider, and the 'SomeClass' is a class factory (relevant in that the factories are 'registered' within the app via explicit assembly/type loading - see below) . Upfront I use reflection to 'register' all factories (i.e. classes that implement a particular interface) and that I do this when the app starts by identifying the relevant assemblies, loading them and adding them to a cache using (in essence): Loop over (file in files) { Assembly assembly = Assembly.LoadFile(file); baseAssemblyList.Add(assembly); } Then I cache the available types in these assemblies with: foreach (Assembly assembly in _loadedAssemblyList) { Type[] assemblyTypes = assembly.GetTypes(); _loadedTypesCache.AddRange(assemblyTypes); } And then I use this cache to do a variety of reflection operations, including 'registering' of factories, which involves looping through all loaded (cached) types and finding those that implement the (base) Factory interface. I've experienced what may be a similar problem in the past (.Net 3.5, so not exactly the same) with an architecture that involved dynamically creating classes on the server and streaming the compiled binary of those classes to the client app. The problem came when trying to deserialize an instance of the dynamic class on the client from a remote call: the exception said the class type was not know, even though the source and destination types were exactly the same name (including namespace). Basically the cross boundry versions of the class were not recognised as being the same. I solved that by intercepting the deserialization process and explicitly defining the deseriazation class type in the context of the local assemblies. This experience is what makes me think the types are considered mismatched because (somehow) the interface of the actual SomeClass object, and the interface of passed into the Generic method are not considered the same type. So (possibly) my question for those more knowledgable about C#/DotNet is: How does the class loading work that somehow my app thinks there are two versions/types of the interface type and how can I fit that? • input field placeholder in jQuery

  I'm trying to create a Login page, not worrying about actually logging in yet, but I'm trying to achieve the effect where there is some faded text inside the input field and when you click on it, the text disappears or if you click away the text reappears. I have this working for my "Username" input field, but the "Password" field is giving me problems because I can't just do $("#password").attr("type","password"). • Different Service behaviors per endpoint

  The situation We are implementing different sort of security on some WCF service. ClientCertificate, UserName & Password and Anonymous. We have 2 ServiceBehaviorConfigurations, one for httpBinding and one for wsHttpBinding. (We have custom authorization policies for claim based security) As a requirement we need different endpoints for each service. 3 endpoints with httpBinding and 1 with wsHttpBinding. Example for one service: basicHttpBinding : Anonymous basicHttpBinding : UserNameAndPassword basicHttpBinding : BasicSsl wsHttpBinding : BasicSsl The Problem Part 1: We cannot specify the same service twice, once with the http service configuration and once with the wsHttp service configuration. Part 2: We cannot specify service behaviors on an endpoint. (Throws and exception, No endpoint behavior was found... • Attaching functions to elements in a loop

  I have the following HTML and JavaScript it works for the first set of elements when I have a '1' in the selector but when I replace the '1' with an 'i' it doesn't attach itself to any of the elements. Any ideas as to why this might not be working? • Javascript auto calculating

  I have page that automatically calculates a Total by entering digits into the fields or pressing the Plus or Minus buttons. I need to add a second input after the Total that automatically divides the total by 25.
