• How to get the value of an item from database and set it as the spinner value

  I have a database and the database populates a listview. when i long press a list item from the listview i get a context menu where i have the option to edit. When the edit option is clicked i open an activity and get all the values of the respective fields from the database. Now, here I want to get a value from the database and show it in the spinner. the spinner already has these values and is getting populated from the database... I have tried the following, but i get an error saying I can't cast a SimpleCursorAdapter to an ArrayAdapter..   I am trying to setup a menu programatically and my method gets com.actionbarsherlock.view.Menu menu as a parameter. As I want to change the styling of the menu item I am trying to setup a SpannableString spannable and pass it to add. menu.add(0, MENU_ABOUT, 0, spannable); This is causing a crash only in ICS when I cick that menu item. Any ideas if I am missing something. Thanks Here is the code I am trying and it crashes when I run the app and select "About Application". FYI, I am using SpannableString because I want to add some styling and color to the menu item. • Launching an Activity from a Service

  When I am trying to launch a call activity from a Service, I get a NullPointerException. Here is my code: Intent callIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_CALL); callIntent.setData(Uri.parse("tel:" + number)); callIntent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); startActivity(callIntent); I get the exception on the startActivity line. I tried to use getApplication.startActivity and getApplicationContext.startActivity but no luck. • missing table in SQLite with specific version of HTC DESIRE HD

  My application has a SQLite database in the asset folder. When the user launches my application, the database is created and the tables too. This works fine with a lot of devices (Nexus One, Htc Magic, SGS, X10… and even Htc Desire HD v2.2). My application works with all versions of Android (tested on my device (1.6, 2.2, 2.2.1 Htc Magic) and on the emulator (v1,5 until v2.3). I have just a problem with HTC DESIRE HD v2.2.1 1.72.405.3.   I've been working on a gui app that needs to manage external processes. Working with external processes leads to a lot of issues that can make a programmer's life difficult. I feel like maintenence on this app is taking an unacceptably long time. I've been trying to list the things that make working with external processes difficult so that I can come up with ways of mitigating the pain. This kind of turned into a rant which I thought I'd post here in order to get some feedback and to provide some guidance to anybody thinking about sailing into these very murky waters. Here's what I've got so far: Output from the child can get mixed up with output from the parent. This can make both outputs misleading and hard to read. It can be hard to tell what came from where. It becomes harder to figure out what's going on when things are asynchronous. If I have code for the child process I could add a label, something like print 'child: Hello %i', but it can be annoying to do that for every print. And it adds some noise to the output. And of course I can't do it if I don't have access to the code. I could manually manage the process output. But then you open up a huge can of worms with threads and polling and stuff like that. A simple solution is to treat processes like synchronous functions, that is, no further code executes until the process completes. In other words, make the process block. But that doesn't work if you're building a gui app. Which brings me to the next problem... You can connect functions to signals to capture output relatively easily. This is what I'm currently using. But I'm finding that all these signals behave suspiciously like goto statements and can lead to spaghetti code. I think I want to get sort-of blocking behavior by having the 'finished' signal from QProcess call a function containing all the code that comes after the process call. I think that should work but I'm still a bit fuzzy on the details... Stack traces get interrupted when you go from the child process back to the parent process. If a normal function screws up, you get a nice complete stack trace with filenames and line numbers. If a subprocess screws up, you'll be lucky if you get any output at all. You end up having to do a lot more detective work everytime something goes wrong. Speaking of which, output has a way of disappearing when dealing external processes. Like if you run something via the windows 'cmd' command, the console will pop up, execute the code, and then disappear before you have a chance to see the output. You have to pass the /k flag to make it stick around. Similar issues seem to crop up all the time. I suppose both problems 3 and 4 have the same root cause: no exception handling. Exception handling is meant to be used with functions, it doesn't work with processes. Maybe there's some way to get something like exception handling for processes? I guess that's what stderr is for? But dealing with two different streams can be annoying in itself. Maybe I should look into this more... Processes can hang and stick around in the background without you realizing it. So you end up yelling at your computer cuz it's going so slow until you finally bring up your task manager and see 30 instances of the same process hanging out in the background. Also, hanging background processes can interefere with other instances of the process in various fun ways, such as causing permissions errors by holding a handle to a file or someting like that. It seems like an easy solution to this would be to have the parent process kill the child process on exit if the child process didn't close itself. But if the parent process crashes, cleanup code might not get called and the child can be left hanging. Also, if the parent waits for the child to complete, and the child is in an infinite loop or something, you can end up with two hanging processes. This problem can tie in to problem 2 for extra fun, causing your gui to stop responding entirely and force you to kill everything with the task manager. F***ing quotes Parameters often need to be passed to processes. This is a headache in itself. Especially if you're dealing with file paths. Say... 'C:/My Documents/whatever/'. If you don't have quotes, the string will often be split at the space and interpreted as two arguments. If you need nested quotes you can use ' and ". But if you need to use more than two layers of quotes, you have to do some nasty escaping, for example: "cmd /k 'python \'path 1\' \'path 2\''". A good solution to this problem is passing parameters as a list rather than as a single string. Subprocess allows you to do this. Can't easily return data from a subprocess. You can use stdout of course. But what if you want to throw a print in there for debugging purposes? That's gonna screw up the parent if it's expecting output formatted a certain way. In functions you can print one string and return another and everything works just fine. Obscure command-line flags and a crappy terminal based help system. These are problems I often run into when using os level apps. Like the /k flag I mentioned, for holding a cmd window open, who's idea was that? Unix apps don't tend to be much friendlier in this regard. Hopefully you can use google or StackOverflow to find the answer you need. But if not, you've got a lot of boring reading and frusterating trial and error to do. External factors. This one's kind of fuzzy. But when you leave the relatively sheltered harbor of your own scripts to deal with external processes you find yourself having to deal with the "outside world" to a much greater extent. And that's a scary place. All sorts of things can go wrong. Just to give a random example: the cwd in which a process is run can modify it's behavior. There are probably other issues, but those are the ones I've written down so far. Any other snags you'd like to add? Any suggestions for dealing with these problems?

• Network Data Packet connectivity intent

  I am writing an Android application which can enable and disable the Network Data packet connection. I am also using one broadcast receiver to check the Network Data packet connection. I have registered broadcast receiver and provided required permission in Manifest file. But when I run this application it changes the connection state and after that it crashes. But when I don't include this broadcast receiver it works fine. I am not able to see any kind of log which can provide some clue. PS: Some information about Android environment and platform. - Android API 10. - Running on Samsung Galaxy II which has android 2.3.6 Edit: my broadcast receiver file ConnectivityReceiver.java was present in default package and it was not being recognized by Android. Android was looking for this file in current package i.e com.rakesh.simplewidget; I just moved connectivityReciever.java file to com.rakesh.simplewidget package and problem was solved.

• Does the Intel DX79TO motherboard support x8 devices (SAS HBAs) on PCIe x16 slots?

  Context: I have an Intel DX79TO motherboard and a Sun SAS3081E-S/LSI 1060E-S HBA card with a PCIe x8 interface. I plug the HBA into my mobo next to my graphics card, and the HBA power lights illuminate, but the BIOS and OSes (tried Linux, ESXi, Win7) don't see the HBA at all. Question: Does the DX79TO motherboard support non-x16/non-GPU devices in its PCIe x16 slots? According to this question, some consumer motherboards don't support this, but I can't figure out whether or not this motherboard/family does. The answer will affect whether I buy a new motherboard or RMA the SAS card, with money attached to each course, so I figured I'd ask here first. What I've Tried: I've read the spec/manuals for the motherboard and the HBA, and I didn't see anything regarding whether or not the x16 slots were back-compatible to lower lane widths/non graphics-card devices, or whether or not the card could run in wider slots than x8. I've tried contacting Intel, but that was over a month ago and I haven't yet heard anything back except an automated "we got your email!" message.

I'm a newbie in linux, so I don't know what info should I provide you with. • GnuPG Command Line - Verifying KeePass Signature

  I'm trying to verify the PGP Signature of the latest version of KeePass 2.14's setup file against this signature, but this is the output I receive: C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU\GnuPG>gpg.exe --verify C:\Users\User\Desktop\KeePass-2.14-Setup.exe gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found. gpg: the signature could not be verified. Please remember that the signature file (.sig or .asc) should be the first file given on the command line. C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU\GnuPG> I found this command here, but it made no mention about ".sig" or ".asc" files, so I figured I did something wrong. By reading (http://www.gnupg.org/documentation/manuals/gnupg/gpgv.html#gpgv), I further tried the following: C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU\GnuPG>gpg.exe --pgpfile C:\Users\User\Desktop\KeePass-2.14-Setup.exe gpg: Invalid option "--pgpfile" C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU\GnuPG> As you can see, the results are quite obfuscating... I took a look at this on SuperUser (http://superuser.com/questions/16160/short-easy-to-understand-explanation-of-gpg-pgp-for-nontechnical-people - I couldn't use "a href" due to the built in spam filter that discriminates against users with < 10 rep; this is the same reason for the link above this link), but none of the links seemed to really address my question, at least not directly enough for me to get any idea on how to move forward on this. Can anybody here help me with the esoteric technicality of OpenPGP & the associated use of the GnuPG program? I've felt pretty dumb learning VBS, but this is beyond humiliating: it's absolutely debilitating and maiming whatever confidence I had with my IT skills (then again, I have no justification for making any boast either, as I have yet to get my A+ Cert, lol).

• External USB HD with -optional- mains?

  Hi, I'm Christmas-present-buying, and I'd appreciate recommendations for a USB HD with an optional mains power input. I've hunted, but can't find all the information I want (partially due to sketchy product specifications). Background: This is for a digital TV which I do not own, and so I'd like to get it correct first time. The TV has a USB port to allow recording straight to disk, but the manuals don't say how much power can be drawn through the USB port. The manual's instructions state, possibly generically, to plug the drive in before connecting to the TV. Ideally I'd like a small (2.5"?) drive which can draw power over USB, with an mains power input if it turns out the USB port on the TV doesn't offer enough juice. The ideal is to use one cable, two max. A powered USB hub would introduce too much clutter. I've spotted that the LaCie Petit drives have what appears to be an additional power input, but I'm not even sure from the specs what that is. And the device doesn't ship with a mains adapter. Suggestions?

• NVIDIA Tesla K20C in Dell PowerEdge R720xd --- power cables

  I am trying to put an NVIDIA Tesla K20C into a Dell PowerEdge R720xd. I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the power requirements of the card. First, here is a picture of two pages of the same manual, which seems contradictory to me. One page says only a single connector is required, while the next page says both are required. And given what appears to be a contradiction in the GPU manual (above), I'm not even sure at this point what we actually need. I have searched high and low online for things like 2x6 pin PCI-E to 8 pin male-to-male and so on, and for the life of me cannot find what we need. • Are there any tests I can run on a network to simulate 100 heavy network users?

  I will be hosting a Ruby on Rails workshop at a small hotel in the near future, and while they have 'Wifi' everywhere on the property, and the property normally hosts 150 - 300 people, I am not 100% confident that they have hosted 150 tech people that tend to have heavy web surfing habits/needs. Their tech department is also 1 or 2 guys. Are there any automated tests I can download and run from my laptop, on the network, that would simulate 100 'heavy users' on the network at the same time? Their broadband pipe is a 15mbps cable connection. Would that suffice for the general surfing needs of 100 - 150 techies? I know all it takes is 1 or 2 bit torrenters to kill the entire network, but assuming we can at the very least block those ports or encourage the attendees not to file share on the network, would that speed suffice for general surfing needs? What are good resources online that would allow me to quickly get up to speed on the IT related issues, so that I can ask their sysadmins the right questions? Edit: Note that I am fairly technical, so assume I can get up to speed quickly even with technical manuals, etc.

• how could application installations/configurations be easier in linux?

  although you can do anything in linux it tends to require a lot of tweaking in config files and reading a lot of manuals/tutorials before you can have it running in your way. i know that it gets a lot easier by time, and the apt-get installations with ubuntu/debian is heading the right way. but how can linux be more userfriendly for us in the future? i thought that if more is automated like an IDE environment, eg. typing svn will give us all the commands and description about each command when you move between commands with your keyboard. that would be great. but that's just one example. another is the navigation in the terminal between folders. now you have to type a lot just to jump from/to different folders. would be great with some more automatization here too. i know that these extra features will slow down the server, but its 2010 now, and these features are not that heavy for the cpu, but makes it more userfriendly and encourage maintainance of a server, not frighten u off. what do you think about this? should/could we have more user friendly linux environment in servers, something that has annoyed you a lot? a lot of things are done in the unix way, but maybe we should reinvent the wheel in some areas, cause apparently, its so...repeatingly today and difficult to do easy tasks. it should be easier i think..

• Preventing h/w RAID cards from dropping slow JBOD disks

  I'm considering buying a used SAS h/w RAID card for externally attaching HDDs to an HP ProLiant I'm setting up. However, I only require RAID functionality on some of the drives. Theoretically it should be simple to JBOD the other drives, but some of them are inexpensive SATA disks and probably cannot have TLER disabled. I'd like to know, prior to actually ordering a RAID card, whether typically RAID cards would still enforce dropping of disks that do not respond within a few seconds, even if the disk is in a JBOD, and whether there is any way to disable this. Ideally it would be nice to be able to select certain SAS ports that will be pass-through, bypassing the RAID engine entirely and just acting as an HBA for those ports. I know I could buy a separate SAS HBA but that seems like a waste of $ and is also impractical as it's a 1U server so space is extremely limited. My question then is whether the functionality I'm looking for (pass-through on certain ports or at least JBOD drives not getting themselves dropped due to slow response) is typical of proper h/w RAID cards such as PERC 5/E etc. I've browsed through the latter's manual but unfortunately, as with most user manuals, it states the obvious and doesn't state the unobvious.
