• Dynamic Query Generation : suggestion for better approaches

  I am currently designing a functionality in my Web Application where the verified user of the application can execute queries which he wishes to from the predefined set of queries with where clause varying as per user's choice. For example,Table ABC contains the following Template query called SecretReport "Select def as FOO, ghi as BAR from MNO where " SecretReport can have parameters XYZ, ILP. Again XYZ can have values as 1,2 and ILP can have 3,4 so if the user chooses ILP=3, he will get the result of the following query on his screen "Select def as FOO, ghi as BAR from MNO where ILP=3" Again the user is allowed permutations of XYZ / ILP My initial thought is that User will be shown a list of Report names and each report will have parameters and corresponding values. But this approach although technically simple does not appear intuitive. I would like to extend this functionality to a more generic level. Such that the user can choose a table and query based on his requirements. Of course we do not want the end user to take complete control of DB. But only tables and fields that are relevant to him. At present we are defining what is relevant in the code. But I want the Admin to take over this functionality such that he can decide what is relevant and expose the same to the user. On user's side it should be intuitive what is available to him and what queries he can form. Please share your thoughts what is the most user friendly way to provide this feature to the end user.

• How to force ADF to speak your language (or any common language)

  When I started working for Oracle, one of the first tasks I was given was to contribute some content to a great ADF course Frank and Chris are building. Among other things, they asked me to work on a module about Internationalization. While doing research work, I unearthed a little gem I had overlooked all those years. JDeveloper, as you may know, speaks your language - as long as your language is English, that is. Oracle ADF, on the other hand, is a citizen of the world. It is available in more than 25 different languages. But while this is a wonderful feature for end users, it is rather cumbersome for developers. Why is that? Have you ever tried to search the OTN forums for a solution with a non-English error message as your query? I have, once. But how can you force ADF to use English for its logging operations? Playing with your system settings will not help, unfortunately. By default, ADF will output its error messages in the selected locale for the operating system account the application server runs on. The only way to change this behavior is to pass initialization parameters to the JVM used by the application server. It is even possible to specify the language and country/region separately. In the example below, we choose English and the United States respectively. -Duser.language=en -Duser.country=US In the case of WebLogic Server, it is possible to add such parameters in setDomainEnv.sh (or .cmd) to apply the settings to all the managed servers present on a node. • Move a player to another team, with players stored in one arraylist and teams in another using java

  Basically I have a team class, which has an array list that store the players in. In the driver class theres an arraylist that stores the teams. Anyhow I've worked out how to add a player to a specific team and like wise remove a player from said team. Where I'm hitting problems is when I try to transfer one player to another. My understanding is to scan through the first team,and get the player. Then some how add this player to another, by scanning through the chosen team and add to it? I've tried this way but it seems to replace the original player with the new player in both teams. My other approach would be to somehow return the parameters of the player object, create another with the return parameters, remove the orignal then add the new instance in the other team? Really not quite generally how I can go about this, been trying all afternoon! If someone could offer me a general idea, then I can go off and apply the understanding to practice. Many thanks

• Managing game objects/components

  Good day everyone, By far the biggest problem that has always dawned on my when programming games is how to structure my code. It just becomes an incredible mess after a while. The reason for that is because I have no idea how different classes should interact with each other. Let's have an example. Say I have a class Player, a class PlayerInput and a class Map. The player class contains information as to the location of the player, whereas the player input class handles changing that location, but by first making sure it's within a walkable area from the map class. How to structure this? My usual approach is to pass those components as parameters in the constructors of the parameters that need them, like so: var map = new Map(); var player = new Player(); var input = new PlayerInput(player, map); The problem with that is that it quickly gets messy, when you add new components you have to go through your constructors and update them, and it doesn't work well if you have mirroring references: var physics = new Physics(input); //Oops, doesn't work var input = new Input(physics); So, how do you guys usually manage this?   Hi! I created a report in VS using a shared data source which is connected to a sharepoint list. I have created a parameter and when I preview the Report I see the dropdownbox which I can use to make a selection from the Title field, when I do this it still shows the first record, obviously it doens't work yet (DUH!) because I need to create a query somewhere, But! I have no idea where, I tried to include <Where> <Eq> <FieldRef Name="ows_Title" /> <Value Type="Text">testValue</Value> </Eq> </Where> in the the soap request but it didn't worked... I've searched teh intarwebz but couldn't find any simliar problems... kinda stuck now...any thoughts on this? • iPhone SDK / Objective C Syntax Question

  To all, I was looking at the sample project from http://iphoneonrails.com/ and I saw they took the NSObject class and added methods to it for the SOAP calls. Their sample project can be downloaded from here http://iphoneonrails.com/downloads/objective_resource-1.01.zip. My question is related to my lack of knowledge on the following syntax as I haven't seen it yet in a iPhone project. There is a header file called NSObject+ObjectiveResource.h where they declare and change NSObject to have extra methods for this project. Is the "+ObjectiveResource.h" in the name there a special syntax or is that just the naming convention of the developers. What is that telling Xcode and the compiler about what is happening..? After that things look normal to me as they have various static and instance methods. I know that by doing this all user classes that inherit from NSObject now have all the extra methods for this project. My question is what is the parenthesis are doing after the NSObject. Is that referencing a header file, or is that letting the compiler know that this class is being over ridden. • What is the best practice when coding math class/functions ?

  Introductory note : I voluntarily chose a wide subject. You know that quote about learning a cat to fish, that's it. I don't need an answer to my question, I need an explanation and advice. I know you guys are good at this ;) Hi guys, I'm currently implementing some algorithms into an existing program. Long story short, I created a new class, "Adder". An Adder is a member of another class representing the physical object actually doing the calculus , which calls adder.calc() with its parameters (merely a list of objects to do the maths on). To do these maths, I need some parameters, which do not exist outside of the class (but can be set, see below). They're neither config parameters nor members of other classes. These parameters are D1 and D2, distances, and three arrays of fixed size : alpha, beta, delta. I know some of you are more comfortable reading code than reading text so here you go : class Adder { public: Adder(); virtual Adder::~Adder(); void set( float d1, float d2 ); void set( float d1, float d2, int alpha[N_MAX], int beta[N_MAX], int delta[N_MAX] ); // Snipped prototypes float calc( List& ... ); // ... inline float get_d1() { return d1_ ;}; inline float get_d2() { return d2_ ;}; private: float d1_; float d2_; int alpha_[N_MAX]; // A #define N_MAX is done elsewhere int beta_[N_MAX]; int delta_[N_MAX]; }; Since this object is used as a member of another class, it is declared in a *.h : private: Adder adder_; By doing that, I couldn't initialize the arrays (alpha/beta/delta) directly in the constructor ( int T[3] = { 1, 2, 3 }; ), without having to iterate throughout the three arrays. I thought of putting them in static const, but I don't think that's the proper way of solving such problems. • checking virtual sub domains

  I create a project that check the sub domain and redirect to the exist subdomain ( username ) but I can't find out why when the username is in database it can't show it . on local system it works finely .. but when I upload it on server it not works .. of course I change the commented place to uncomment for test .. but it's not working .. it shows this error : Object reference not set to an instance of an object. • Which of CouchDB or MongoDB suits my needs?

  Where I work, we use Ruby on Rails to create both backend and frontend applications. Usually, these applications interact with the same MySQL database. It works great for a majority of our data, but we have one situation which I would like to move to a NoSQL environment. We have clients, and our clients have what we call "inventories"--one or more of them. An inventory can have many thousands of items. This is currently done through two relational database tables, inventories and inventory_items. The problems start when two different inventories have different parameters: # Inventory item from inventory 1, televisions { inventory_id: 1 sku: 12345 name: Samsung LCD 40 inches model: 582903-4 brand: Samsung screen_size: 40 type: LCD price: 999.95 } # Inventory item from inventory 2, accomodation { inventory_id: 2 sku: 48cab23fa name: New York Hilton accomodation_type: hotel star_rating: 5 price_per_night: 395 } Since we obviously can't use brand or star_rating as the column name in inventory_items, our solution so far has been to use generic column names such as text_a, text_b, float_a, int_a, etc, and introduce a third table, inventory_schemas. With it, we could let each and every item have their own parameters and still store them together. From the research I've done, it certainly seems like a great alterative for this situation. Specifically, I've looked at CouchDB and MongoDB. Both look great. However, there are a few other bits and pieces we need to be able to do with our inventory: We need to be able to select items from only one (or several) inventories. We need to be able to filter items based on its parameters (eg. get all items from inventory 2 where type is 'hotel'). We need to be able to group items based on parameters (eg. get the lowest price from items in inventory 1 where brand is 'Samsung'). We need to (potentially) be able to retrieve thousands of items at a time. We need to be able to access the data from multiple applications; both backend (to process data) and frontend (to display data). Rapid bulk insertion is desired, though not required. Based on the structure, and the requirements, are either CouchDB or MongoDB suitable for us? If so, which one will be the best fit? Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for answers. EDIT: One of the reasons I like CouchDB is that it would be possible for us in the frontend application to request data via JavaScript directly from the server after page load, and display the results without having to use any backend code whatsoever. This would lead to better page load and less server strain, as the fetching/processing of the data would be done client-side.

  I am using Java Process API to write a class that receives binary input from the network (say via TCP port A), processes it and writes binary output to the network (say via TCP port B). I am using Windows XP. The code looks like this. There are two functions called run() and receive(): run is called once at the start, while receive is called whenever there is a new input received via the network. Run and receive are called from different threads. The run process starts an exe and receives the input and output stream of the exe. • Force SSRS 2008 to use SSRS 2005 CSV rendering

  We are upgrading our report server from SSRS 2005 to SSRS 2008 R2. I have an issue with CSV export rendering for SSRS 2008 where the SUM of columns are appearing on the right side of the detail values in 2008 instead of the left side like in 2005 as shown in the below blocks. 117 and 131 are the sums of Column2 and Column3 respectively. But neither mode helps fix this issue. The Compliant mode was supposed to be closest to that of 2005 but apparently it is not close enough for my case. My Question: Is there a way to force SSRS 2008 fall back a report to a backward compatibility mode so that it exports into a 2005 CSV format? Solution tried: a) Using 2005-based CRIs Based on this article on ExecutionLog2, if SSRS 2008 R2 encounters a report whose auto-upgrade is not possible (e.g. reports that were built with 2005-based CustomReportItem controls), those particular reports will be processed with the old Yukon engine in a "transparent backwards-compatibility mode". It seems like it falls back to its previous version mode (2005) and attempts to render it. So I tried using a 2005-based barcode CustomReportItem and deployed to a SSRS 2008 R2 report server, but it shows the same result as before though it suppressed the barcode. This would be because SSRS 2008 R2 finds a way to suppress part of the report output and displays the rest. It would be great to find a 2005-based CRI that makes SSRS 2008 R2 process it with its old Yukon engine. Please note that quite possibly, even if it uses the "old Yukon processing engine", it might still use the new CSV renderer hence it shows the same output. If that is true, then this option is moot. b) Using XML renderer We can use a custom XML renderer and then use XSLT to convert the xml to appropriate CSV but this would mean that we need to convert all our 200 reports. Hence this is not feasible. Please note that we do not have the option of having SSRS 2005 and SSRS 2008 R2 deployed side by side.

• Please help me understand why my XSL Transform is not transforming

  I'm trying to transform one XML format to another using XSL. Try as I might, I can't seem to get a result. I've hacked away at this for a while now and I've had no success. I'm not even getting any exceptions. I'm going to post the entire code and hopefully someone can help me work out what I've done wrong. I'm aware there are likely to be problems in the xsl I have in terms of selects and matches, but I'm not fussed about that at the moment. The output I'm getting is the input XML without any XML tags. The transformation is simply not occurring. What am I doing wrong here?

• dividing double by double gives weird results - Java

  Hi, I am trying to do the following 33.33333333333333/100.0 to get 0.333333333333333 however when I run System.out.println(33.33333333333333/100.0); I get 0.33333333333333326 as the output, similarly when I run System.out.println(33.33333333333333/1000.0); I get 0.033333333333333326 as the output. Does anyone know why, and how I can get the correct value (without loss of decimal places). Thanks

• any good jsch examples?

  I'm trying to run a command over ssh with jsch, but jsch has virtually no documentation and the examples I've found via google are terrible. For example, this one doesn't show code for handling the output stream. And, this one using an ugly hack to know when to stop reading from the output stream.
