• vmware player xorg driver broke after ubuntu 12.04 LTS automatic system update on 06/07/2014

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as a virtual machine on a Windows 7 host using vmware player 6.0.2. On Sat. 06/07/2014, Ubuntu performed an automatic system update as it does regularly, however after reboot, the display driver seems to be broken which causes the screen to split into many identical panels. This pretty much rendered the VM unusable. Below is the log entry for that update from /var/log/apt/history.log It appears that at least one of these updates have caused this problem. The exact same problem has been reported on the vmware forum as well, see https://communities.vmware.com/message/2388776#2388776 So far I have not been able so find a solution.   I just finished install sharepoint 3.0 on a w2k3 enterprise server. It says installation successfully completed. Then when i attempt to go to 'Sharepoint Products and Technologies configuration wizard, i receive the following error: Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. • Need to display my code in stack trace. I see only System... lines.

  Sometimes when I get an Exception while debugging in Visual Studio, all the code lines in the stack trace belong to the System.. name space. It doesn't display my line of code which was responsible for the exception. Is there a way to be make the stack trace show more lines or to ignore stack trace from the system namespace? Something like Just-My-Code for stack trace?

• Solution 6 : Kill a Non-Clustered Process during Two-Node Cluster Failover

  Using Visual Studio 2008 and C#, I developed a windows service A and deployed it to two nodes of a windows server 2008 failover cluster. The service A is part of the failover cluster service, which means, when failover occurs at node1, the cluster service will failover the windows service A from node 1 to node 2. One of the tasks implemented by the windows service A is to start, monitor or kill a process B. The process B is installed to the two nodes but is not part of the failover cluster service. When a failover occurs at node1, the cluster service does not failover the process B from node 1 to node 2, and the process B continues running at node1. The requirement is: When failover occurs at node1, we want the process B running at node1 gets killed, but we do not want the process B be part of the failover cluster service. The first idea that pops up immediately is to put some code in an event handler triggered by the failover in the windows service A. The failover effect to the windows service A is similar to using the task manager to kill the process of the windows service A, but there is no event in windows service that can be triggered by killing the process of the window service. The events related to terminating a windows service are OnStop and OnShutDown, but killing the process of windows service A triggers neither of them. The OnStop event can only be triggered by stopping the windows service using Services Control Manager or Services Management Console. Apparently, the first idea is not feasible. The second idea that emerges is to put code into the OnStart event handler of the windows service A. When failover occurs at node 1, the windows service A is killed at node 1 and started at node 2. During the starting, the windows service A at node 2 kills the process B that is running at node 1. It is a workaround and works very well. The C# code implementation within the OnStart event handler is as following: 1.       Capture server names of the two nodes from App.config 2.       Determine server name of the remote node. 3.       Kill the process B running on the remote node. • Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) and things I wish were more intuitive

  I've started using Windows Workflow Foundation, and so far ran into a few things that aren't incredibly obvious. Microsoft did a good job of providing a ton of samples, which is handy because you need them to get anywhere with WF. The docs are thin, so I've been bouncing between samples and downloadable labs to figure out how to implement various activities in a workflow. Code separation or not? You can create a workflow and activity in Visual Studio with or without code separation, i.e. just a .cs "Component" style object with a Designer.cs file, or a .xoml XML markup file with code behind (beside?) it. Absence any obvious advantage to one or the other, I used code separation for workflows and any complex custom activities, and without code separation for custom activities that just inherit from the Activity class and thus don't have anything special in the designer. So far, so good. Workflow Activity Library project type - What's the point of this separate project type? So far I don't see much advantage to keeping your custom activities in a separate project. I prefer to have as few projects as needed (and no fewer). The Designer's Toolbox window seems to find your custom activities just fine no matter where they are, and the debugging experience doesn't seem to be any different. Designer Properties - This is about the designer, and not specific to WF, but nevertheless something that's hindered me a lot more in WF than in Windows Forms or elsewhere. The Properties window does a good job of showing you property values when you hover the mouse over the values. But they don't do the same to find out what a control's type is. So maybe if I named all my activities "x1" and "x2" instead of helpful self-documenting names like "listenForStatusUpdate", then I could easily see enough of the type to determine what it is, but any names longer than those and all I get of the type is "System.Workflow.Act" or "System.Workflow.Compone". Even hitting the dropdown doesn't expand any wider, like the debugger quick watch "smart tag" popups do when you scroll through members. The only way I've found around this in VS 2008 is to widen the Properties dialog, losing precious designer real estate, then shrink it back down when you're done to see what you were doing. Really? WF Designer - This is about the designer, and I believe is specific to WF. I should be able to edit the XML in a .xoml file, or drag and drop using the designer. With WPF (at least in VS 2010 Ultimate), these are side by side, and changes to one instantly update the other. With WF, I have to right-click on the .xoml file, choose Open With, and pick XML Editor to edit the text. It looks like this is one way where WF didn't get the same attention WPF got during .NET Fx 3.0 development. Service - In the WF world, this is simply a class that talks to the workflow about things outside the workflow, not to be confused with how the term "service" is used in every other context I've seen in the Windows and .NET world, i.e. an executable that waits for events or requests from a client and services them (Windows service, web service, WCF service, etc.). ListenActivity - Such a great concept, yet so unintuitive. It seems you need at least two branches (EventDrivenActivity instances), one for your positive condition and one for a timeout. The positive condition has a HandleExternalEventActivity, and the timeout has a DelayActivity followed by however you want to handle the delay, e.g. a ThrowActivity. The timeout is simple enough; wiring up the HandleExternalEventActivity is where things get fun. You need to create a service (see above), and an interface for that service (this seems more complex than should be necessary--why not have activities just wire to a service directly?). And you need to create a custom EventArgs class that inherits from ExternalDataEventArgs--you can't create an ExternalDataEventArgs event handler directly, even if you don't need to add any more information to the event args, despite ExternalDataEventArgs not being marked as an abstract class, nor a compiler error nor warning nor any other indication that you're doing something wrong, until you run it and find that it always times out and get to check every place mentioned here to see why. Your interface and service need an event that consumes your custom EventArgs class, and a method to fire that event. You need to call that method from somewhere. Then you get to hope that you did everything just right, or that you can step through code in the debugger before your Delay timeout expires. Yes, it's as much fun as it sounds. TransactionScopeActivity - I had the bright idea of putting one in as a placeholder, then filling in the database updates later. That caused this error: The workflow hosting environment does not have a persistence service as required by an operation on the workflow instance "[GUID]". ...which is about as helpful as "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" and even more fun to debug. Google led me to this Microsoft Forums hit, and from there I figured out it didn't like that the activity had no children. Again, a Validator on TransactionScopeActivity would have pointed this out to me at design time, rather than handing me a nearly useless error at runtime. Easily enough, I disabled the activity and that fixed it. I still see huge potential in my work where WF could make things easier and more flexible, but there are some seriously rough edges at the moment. Maybe I'm just spoiled by how much easier and more intuitive development elsewhere in the .NET Framework is.

• ReSharper File Location

  By default, the ReSharper cache is stored in the solution folder.  It’s one extra folder and one extra .user file.  It’s no big deal but it does clutter up your solution a bit – especially since the files provide no real value. I prefer to store the ReSharper cache in the system Temp folder.  This setting is available by visiting ReSharper > Options > Environment > General. Just update where you’d like to store the ReSharper cache and you’re good to go.  Note, the .user file continues to linger around the solution folder but at least the _ReSharper.SolutionName folder is moved out of sight.

• Simple Preferred time control using silverlight 3.

  Here I am going to show you a simple preferred time control, where you can select the day of the week and the time of the day. This can be used in lots of place where you may need to display the users preferred times. Sample screenshot is attached below. This control is developed using Silverlight 3 and VS2008, I am also attaching the source code with this post. This is a very basic example. You can download and customize if further for your requirement if you want. I am trying to explain in few words how this control works and what are the different ways in which you can customize it further. File: PreferredTimeControl.xaml, in this file I have just hardcoded the controls and their positions which you can see in the screenshot above. In this example, to change the start day of the week and time, you will have to go and change the design in XAML file, its not controlled by your properties or implementation classes. You can also customize it to change the start day of the week, Language, Display format, styles, etc, etc. File: PreferredTimeControl.xaml.cs, In this control using the code below, first I am taking all the checkbox from my form and store it in the Global Variable, which I can use across my page. • dpkg unsatisfied dependencies, now apt-get wants to remove whole system

  firstly, I'm sorry for my terminal output in portuguese, but I guess it is still understandable. I am using Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 and I tried to update the GNOME Online Accounts packages by downloading the following .deb files from packages.ubuntu.com for the Ubuntu 14.10 version: libgoa-backend-1.0-dev_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libgoa-backend-1.0-1_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libgoa-1.0-dev_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libgoa-1.0-0b_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb gnome-online-accounts_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb gir1.2-goa-1.0_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb After downloading them in the same folder, I run the command sudo dpkg -i *.deb, but it didn't install the packages, instead it showed errors due to packages which them depend doesn't meet the required version (and Ubuntu have no way to install them since they are not in this version's repositories). So now every time I want to install anything through apt-get, Ubuntu tells me to run apt-get -f install to fix the errors. So, essentially this task has burned 1 hour per day Sprint Burn Down Chart – What’s not possible? The Sprint burn down chart is calculated from the System.AuthorizedDate and not the System.ChangedDate/System.CreatedDate. So, though you can change the System.ChangedDate and System.CreatedDate to historic dates you will not be able to synthesize the sprint burn down chart. Image 1 – By changing the Created Date and Changed Date to ‘18/Oct/2012’ you would have expected the burn down to have been impacted, but it won’t be, because the sprint burn down chart uses the value of field ‘System.AuthorizedDate’ to calculate the unfinished work points. The AsOf queries that are used to calculate the unfinished work points use the value of the field ‘System.AuthorizedDate’. Image 2 – Using the above code I burned down 1 hour effort per day over 5 days from the task work item, I would have expected the sprint burn down to show a constant burn down, instead the burn down shows the effort exhausted on the 24th itself. Simply because the burn down is calculated using the ‘System.AuthorizedDate’. Now you would ask… “Can I change the value of the field System.AuthorizedDate to a historic date” Unfortunately that’s not possible! You will run into the exception ValidationException –  “TF26194: The value for field ‘Authorized Date’ cannot be changed.” Conclusion - You need to be a member of the Project Collection Service account group in order to set the fields ‘System.ChangedDate’ and ‘System.CreatedDate’ to historic dates - You need to instantiate the WorkItemStore using the flag ByPassValidation - The System.ChangedDate needs to be set to a historic date at the time of work item creation. You cannot reset the ChangedDate to a date earlier than the existing ChangedDate and you cannot reset the ChangedDate to a date greater than the current date time. - The System.CreatedDate can only be reset after a work item has been created. You cannot set the CreatedDate at the time of work item creation. The CreatedDate cannot be greater than the current date. You can however reset the CreatedDate to a date earlier than the existing value. - You will not be able to synthesize the Sprint burn down chart by changing the value of System.ChangedDate and System.CreatedDate to historic dates, since the burn down chart uses AsOf queries to calculate the unfinished work points which internally uses the System.AuthorizedDate and NOT the System.ChangedDate & System.CreatedDate - System.AuthorizedDate cannot be set to a historic date using the TFS API Read other posts on using the TFS API here… Enjoy!

  I'm no expert when it come to everything Visual Studio 2010 and utilizing SQL server 2008. I'm sure some of my personal projects I've built for personal use would get laughed off the face of the planet, but SQLCe has been the solution I was looking for those home type of projects. And they work, flawlessly. Now I feel it's time to step up to the big league. I want to develop a complete, unified and module based solution for my company that I'm working for. We're still using stuff from the 80s for goodness sake! I use Excel and query the ancient database on my own because I can't stand the GUI. Nothing against people of age, but the IDE our programmers are using is from the stone age, and they use APL of all things with it. I've yet to see a radio button control anywhere in the GUI where it would make sense. Anyway, I want to do this right from the ground up. I'm by no means a newbie when it comes to programming in .NET 2010, however, I want the entire solution to be professionally done. I want version control, test projects, project flow, SQL 2008 integration and all the bells and whistles that come with that. I know for a fact that if we had something like that running, not only would development costs and time be slashed four fold, but the possibilities for expansion and performance would sky rocket. (Between the GUI an our DB engine, it can only use ONE CORE! ONE! It's 2012 for goodness sake!) Our business is growing and our current ancient solution just can't keep up, and I'd hate to see our business go down in flames because our programmer is stuck in the 80's and refuses to use anything current. So I ask you guys, the experts and know-it-alls, where do I start? Are there any gems of good books out there in the haystack of all "This for dummies" type of deals? I already have several people backing me in this endeavor, and while it may seem brash to just usurp the current programmers, I'm doing this for the company as a whole.

  This question already has an answer here: Legal issues around using real players names and team emblems in an open source game 2 answers Ok...this question hasn't been asked before, its very similar to some, but here's the difference: I am making a soccer/football simulator game, that only has national teams (with no official logos) just the country names and flags. Now, my doubt is the following...can I use real player names (that play or played on that national team?) From what I understand if I use a player name linked to a club like Barcelona FC (not a national team) I need the right from the club and the association that club is linked to, right? But If I am only linking the name just to a country...I might just need the permission of the actual player (that I am using his name) and not any other associations, correct? I don't think it's file-permissions, since I'm running as a nice insecure administrator user, and there aren't any other programs open that might have a read-lock on the file. This is on Vista with UAC disabled. If it's simply not possible and I missed something in the documentation, please let me know. I now have a need to combine several of these reports into one report (possibly like this) but the code that loads up the fields in the report is in the dialog.
