• Migrating JSF 1.2 to 2.x resulted in java.lang.NullPointerException at com.sun.faces.config.InitFacesContext.cleanupInitMaps

  I'm in process of migrating a JSF 1.2 application to JSF 2.x. My application is using the following APIs: maven-jetty-plugin (version 6.1.10) maven-compiler-plugin (version 2.3.1) myfaces-api & -impl (version 1.2.7) jsf-facelets (version 1.1.14) richfaces (version 3.3.3) javax servlet jstl (version 1.2) javax servlet-api (version 2.5) and some other plugins as well. I updated the versions in faces-config.xml file and removed Facelets 1.1.14 libs and replaced MyFaces 1.2 by JSF 2.x libs, however the application didn't work. • Forcing a mixed ISO-8859-1 and UTF-8 multi-line string into UTF-8

  Consider the following problem: A multi-line string $junk contains some lines which are encoded in UTF-8 and some in ISO-8859-1. I don't know a priori which lines are in which encoding, so heuristics will be needed. I want to turn $junk into pure UTF-8 with proper re-encoding of the ISO-8859-1 lines. Also, in the event of errors in the processing I want to provide a "best effort result" rather than throwing an error. Discarding the data is a start, but I need to discard up to a point I can start processing messages again. The corrupt message may be lost, but I need to be able to recover from it. I've got the following idea in mind: Put a fixed header at the start of each message, eg. 0xABCDEF01. When recovering, lookup this header and restart handling incoming messages. = Break off readFortune() on a timeout and recover = When encountering an inconsistent header, recover A huge blocksize is still going to be a problem. To fix that, I should be constantly checking whether or not I'm reading gibberish, but this is not always possible. I can also limit the blocksize on certain message-types. Any ideas on this? Any proposals on what to use as byteword?

• complete, monospaced Unicode font?

  I'm looking for a good programming font that lets me add comments and string literals in Unicode, usually Japanese and Chinese along with some Latin and Cyrillic languages. So far the situation seems to be "complete, monospace, free, pick 2" and Google is failing me with this (maybe because there are no good ones?). The best I found is Arial Unicode but it's not monospace, which is a big nuisance for me and the editors I use. Not to mention Python indentation when I'm coding Python. (Links, edits are welcome)

• SphinxSearch or a spider - which one to choose?

  Hello, here is my problem: We own SiteA and SiteB and they share the same server and database where we have full control. SiteC , siteD and siteE are some of the sites we own as well but reside on a different web hosts. The goal is to create a unified search functionality for all of the sites mentioned above. That is if somebody search for a term in SiteA, the search result will automatically come up with results from SiteB,SiteC,SiteD and Site E too. The search results should be shown under the website they were found in. All these websites content are stored in their own databases. If I use SphinxSearch to index the above sites,I would then require those sites that we dont have complete control with to setup a web service where i can download a database dump or csv file for indexing. Im not quite sure about how a sphider will come into play here so need your opinion. Sphinx or a spider? THanks!

I'm trying to build it up again, but while I'm at it, I thought I'd pick up other good configurations that other people use. So, if you use Emacs, what's in your .emacs? Mine is pretty barren right now, containing only: Global font-lock-mode! (global-font-lock-mode 1) My personal preferences with respect to indentation, tabs, and spaces. Use cperl-mode instead of perl-mode. A shortcut for compilation. What do you think is useful?

  I'm doing a Sphinx search but turning up some really weird results. Any help is appreciated. So for example if I type "50", I get: 50 Cent 50 Lions 50 Foot Wave, etc. This is great, but when I search "50 Ce", I get: Ryczace Dwudziestki Spisek Bernhard Gal Cowabunga Go-Go And other crazy results. Also when I search for "50 Cent", the correct result is at the top, but then random results below. Any ideas why? • Excel and Tab Delimited Files Question

  I am encountering what I believe to be a strange issue with Excel (in this case, Excel 2007, but maybe also Excel 2003, but don't have access to it as I write this). I can reliably convert some server data over into a tab-delimited format (been doing this for years) and then open it using Excel - no issue. However, what seems to be happening is if I have an html <table inside one of the fields, it looks like Excel 2007 thinks it should be converting the table into rows and columns inside Excel (not what I want). As you might imagine, this throws off the entire spreadsheet. So question is, is there any way to set up excel to NOT do this (perhaps some setting in Excel that pertains to reading tab delimited files), or am I missing something? Thanks.

• Constant Memory Leak in SpeechSynthesizer

  I have developed a project which I would like to release which uses c#, WPF and the System.Speech.Synthesizer object. The issue preventing the release of this project is that whenever SpeakAsync is called it leaves a memory leak that grows to the point of eventual failure. I believe I have cleaned up properly after using this object, but cannot find a cure. I have run the program through Ants Memory Profiler and it reports that WAVEHDR and WaveHeader is growing with each call. I have created a sample project to try to pinpoint the cause, but am still at a loss. Any help would be appreciated. The project uses VS2008 and is a c# WPF project that targets .NET 3.5 and Any CPU. You need to manually add a reference to System.Speech. • Rails add a param to the end of a search query

  Hello, I am trying to implement a sort on the returned results of a search with rails. Filter by: 'recent' % | 'lowest_price' % | 'highest_price' % here are my links. I would like to add a filter to the end of my search query. So for example, I submit a search and I get back results and in my url I have http://localhost:3000/junks?search=handbag&condition=&category=&main_submit=Go! I would then like the user to be able to click one of the above links and have the page come back with a new query (i have this set up in the controller like such) con_id = params[:condition] if params[:category].nil? || params[:category].empty? cat_id = params[:category] results = Junk.search params[:search], :with => { :category_id => cat_id, :condition_id => con_id } case params[:filter] when "lowest_price" @junks = results.lowest_price.paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 12 when "highest_price" @junks = results.highest_price.paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 12 else @junks = results.paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 12 end else I would like the user to be able to click on of the above links and append a filter param to the end of the search query so that my controller can pick it up and call the correct database queries as seen in the case statement above. • Timeout reading verity collection - CF8

  For a long time now I've been having a problem with using the verity search service bundled with ColdFusion 8. The issue is with timeout errors occurring when perfoming any operation on a collection. It's intermittent, and usually occurs after a few operations have been successfully performed. For instance: If I'm adding records to a collection the first, say 15 records, will go through with no problems, but all subsequent records will timeout until the service is rebooted. I'm on a shared server, Windows 2008, 64bit as far as I know. The error I receive is: "An error occurred while performing an operation in the Search Engine library. Error reading collection information.: com.verity.api.administration.ConfigurationException: java.io.IOException: Read timed out" Having spoken to my hosting company, and after doing some research, it's been suggested that the number of collections on a server may cause this issue. I've reduced the amount of collections I use, and there are currently 39 collections on the server. As I'm on a shared server, I have no control over how many collections other customers use, however I've read that the limit is 128 collections, so I don't see why 39 should cause it to become unusable. The collections aren't big, there's maybe around 5,000 records between all of them. Any ideas?

• How to determine the (natural) language of a document?

  I have a set of documents in two languages: English and German. There is no usable meta information about these documents, a program can look at the content only. Based on that, the program has to decide which of the two languages the document is written in. Is there any "standard" algorithm for this problem that can be implemented in a few hours' time? Or alternatively, a free .NET library or toolkit that can do this? I know about LingPipe, but it is Java Not free for "semi-commercial" usage This problem seems to be surprisingly hard. I checked out the Google AJAX Language API (which I found by searching this site first), but it was ridiculously bad. For six web pages in German to which I pointed it only one guess was correct. The other guesses were Swedish, English, Danish and French... A simple approach I came up with is to use a list of stop words. My app already uses such a list for German documents in order to analyze them with Lucene.Net. If my app scans the documents for occurrences of stop words from either language the one with more occurrences would win. A very naive approach, to be sure, but it might be good enough. Unfortunately I don't have the time to become an expert at natural-language processing, although it is an intriguing topic.

• TextToSpeech setOnUtteranceCompletedListener always returns -1 error?

  I've been working with Android's TTS functions with general success however, one piece of it refuses to work for me; I can not successfully assign an OnUtteranceCompletedListener to my TextToSpeech object. I've tried implementing OnUtteranceCompletedListener in one of my classes and I've tried creating a new, stand-alone OnUtteranceCompletedListener instance. Both approaches are simple enough to implement and appear to yield proper listeners without exceptions...yet setOnUtteranceCompleteListener(myListener) ALWAYS returns -1 (ERROR). The documentation for this seems straight forward. Has anyone gotten this to work? I'm targeting SDK 4. Are there known issues with this with SDK4/v1.6?
