• Problem after dismissing a modal view used in conjunction with a uisplitviewcontroller

  I'm having a hard time understanding why the following is happening (and how to fix it). I've created an application using the split-view based application. I've added a UiBarButtonItem called showTheModal which calls this method found in RootViewController.m: - (IBAction)showTheModal:(id)sender { theModalController.modalPresentationStyle = UIModalPresentationFullScreen; theModalController.modalTransitionStyle = UIModalTransitionStyleCrossDissolve; [self presentModalViewController:theModalController animated:YES]; if ([detailViewController popoverController] != nil) [[detailViewController popoverController] dismissPopoverAnimated:YES]; The BarButtonItem of course, is shown at the bottom of the Default Root Controller (left side of the of the split view in landscape) or at the bottom of the popup (if in landscape). The modal view is dismissed by a button placed in a toolbar. It calls the following: [self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated: YES]; The problem I'm having is if rotate the screen, while the modal is up. Here is what happens in different scenarios (start refers to the orientation when the showTheModal button is hit, end refers to the orientation when I hit the dismissModal button). 1)Start landscape, end landscape: Everything appears fine. willHideViewController and willShowViewController methods are not called in the RootViewController (as expected) 2) Start landscape, end portrait: UI appears fine. willHideViewController is run TWICE (WHY?) 3) Start portrait, end portrait: UI appears fine. willHideViewController is run once (as expected) 4) Start portrait, end landscape: The 'Root List' button remains in the detail view (right side of the split view. Neither willHideViewController and willShowViewController are invoked (WHY??) Any thoughts as to why #2 and #4 don't behave quite the expected way?

• Better why of looping to detect change.

  As of now I'm using a while(true) method to detect changes in memory. The problem with this is it's kill the applications performance. I have a list of 30 pointers that need checked as rapidly as possible for changes, without sacrificing a huge performance loss.   Hello, A Facebook Sync app filled the address fields of my Mac Address Book contacts with their cities. Having tons of people who have useless addresses makes it difficult to search by people on Google Maps app (ending up scrolling through many many people- I only want to see those who have proper addresses entered). I want to clear all the home address fields in my address book using applescript. • Round-Robin DNS in mobile networks

  After reading load distribution alternatives and giving my limited skills on the area I'm biased toward round-robin DNS strategy. From what I understood, one key aspect of DNS Round-Robin is setting a low TTL value, avoiding caching. My main concern is that all my traffic comes from mobile networks, almost 30% of that comes from t-mobile 3G. Some questions: 1) Is there a chance that almost all clients on the same mobile network will be redirected to the same IP in the TTL frame? That would kill the distribution technique. 2) If I choose a really low TTL (zero or one). That impacts directly over client performance? It does a DNS miss every time or it's a setting that only impacts on DNS servers? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

  After performing a FormView.InsertItem, I am unable to read the new values from the bound object within the LLBLGenProDataSource that the FormView is bound to. I have tracing turned on, I can see the insert happen, and the data does make it into the database, yet when I examine the contents of LLBLGenProDataSource.EntityCollection(0) (there is only one item in the collection) I do not see the values from the FormView.....yet, they are somehow being inserted into the database. • Find optimal strategy and AI for the game 'Proximity'?

  'Proximity' is a strategy game of territorial domination similar to Othello, Go and Risk. Two players, uses a 10x12 hex grid. Game invented by Brian Cable in 2007. Seems to be a worthy game for discussing a) optimal algorithm then b) how to build an AI. Strategies are going to be probabilistic or heuristic-based, due to the randomness factor, and the insane branching factor (20^120). So it will be kind of hard to compare objectively. A compute time limit of 5s per turn seems reasonable. Game: Flash version here and many copies elsewhere on the web Rules: here Object: to have control of the most armies after all tiles have been placed. Each turn you received a randomly numbered tile (value between 1 and 20 armies) to place on any vacant board space. If this tile is adjacent to any ally tiles, it will strengthen each tile's defenses +1 (up to a max value of 20). If it is adjacent to any enemy tiles, it will take control over them if its number is higher than the number on the enemy tile. Thoughts on strategy: Here are some initial thoughts; setting the computer AI to Expert will probably teach a lot: minimizing your perimeter seems to be a good strategy, to prevent flips and minimize worst-case damage like in Go, leaving holes inside your formation is lethal, only more so with the hex grid because you can lose armies on up to 6 squares in one move low-numbered tiles are a liability, so place them away from your main territory, near the board edges and scattered. You can also use low-numbered tiles to plug holes in your formation, or make small gains along the perimeter which the opponent will not tend to bother attacking. a triangle formation of three pieces is strong since they mutually reinforce, and also reduce the perimeter Each tile can be flipped at most 6 times, i.e. when its neighbor tiles are occupied. Control of a formation can flow back and forth. Sometimes you lose part of a formation and plug any holes to render that part of the board 'dead' and lock in your territory/ prevent further losses. Low-numbered tiles are obvious-but-low-valued liabilities, but high-numbered tiles can be bigger liabilities if they get flipped (which is harder). One lucky play with a 20-army tile can cause a swing of 200 (from +100 to -100 armies). So tile placement will have both offensive and defensive considerations. Comment 1,2,4 seem to resemble a minimax strategy where we minimize the maximum expected possible loss (modified by some probabilistic consideration of the value ß the opponent can get from 1..20 i.e. a structure which can only be flipped by a ß=20 tile is 'nearly impregnable'.) I'm not clear what the implications of comments 3,5,6 are for optimal strategy. Interested in comments from Go, Chess or Othello players. (The sequel ProximityHD for XBox Live, allows 4-player -cooperative or -competitive local multiplayer increases the branching factor since you now have 5 tiles in your hand at any given time, of which you can only play one. Reinforcement of ally tiles is increased to +2 per ally.)

• ruby rails loop causes server freeze

  Hi all: I am working on a Ruby on Rails project on Windows. I have Ruby 1.86 and Rails 2.35 installed. Everything is fine until I tried to implement a comet process. I have the following code written to respond to a long poll javascript request. But everytime this function is called, it will hang the whole rails server, no second request can get in, until the timeout. (I know there is juggernaut, but I like to implement one myself first :) Is this due to my server setup? When I call bwriter.flush() does it also flush the fstream object? Or should I have to explicitly call fstream.flush() such as given in the following example: while not end of file read from source file bwriter.write() bwriter.flush() fstream.flush() end while A few people suggested that I need to call fstream.flush() explicitly to make sure that the data is written to the disk (or the device). However, my testing shows that the data is written to the disk as soon as I call flush() method on the bwriter object. Can some one confirm this?

• Something eating space on OS drive

  I am facing low disk space issue from last few days. I checked with Restore,System Volume Information, $Recycled folders. But there is nothing which is occupying space. I had scanned my system for virus too. Total size of C: is 18 GB. But when I select all folders inside C: and query for used space, it shows 20+ gb space is used. I vacate space some how by deleting temp files, program's cache files, disk clean up etc up to (3 gb). And I ensured that no cache/temp files are recreated who can use the space again. Even after cleaning so much data, I am again facing low disk space issue. Something is eating disk space within 15-20 mins.

  I've read that unmanaged resource are considered file handles, streams, anything low level. Does MSDN or any other source explain how to recognize an unmanaged resource? I can't seem to find any examples on the net that show unmanaged code, all the examples just have comments that say unmanaged code here. Can someone perhaps provide a realworld example where I would handle an unmanaged resources in an IDispose interface? I provided the IDisposable interface for your convience.   I am using UFW with a default logging policy of "low". I would like to keep this logging on for the default deny action, but disable it for a particular IP address only. So I'd like to create one particular new rule that doesn't have logging. Is there a way to achieve this? Now I'd like to expand / collapse the groups with a single mouse-click (not with a double click as the default behaviour). • Tree Node Checked behavior on a TreeView in Compact Framework 3.5 running on Windows Mobile 6.5

  I have been upgrading an existing .NET Windows Mobile application to use the 3.5 version of the compact framework and to run on Windows Mobile 6.5. I have a form with a TreeView. The TreeView.Checkboxes property is set to true so that each node has a check box. This gives no trouble in all previous versions of Windows Mobile. However, in version 6.5 when you click on a check box it appears to check and then uncheck instantaneously. But it only raises the AfterCheck event once. The only way I can get a check to stick is by double clicking it (which is the wrong behavior). Has anyone seen this behavior? Does anyone know of a workaround for it?   I have to write an SQL view that returns the time part of a datetime column as a string in the format hhmmss (apparently SAP BW doesn't understand hh:mm:ss). • LinkedIn API returning extra/incorrect login prompt

  I have a Rails application running the omniauth-linkedin gem and linkedin gem (essentialy an API wrapper). When a user logs in, they receive a primary login prompt that displays to them the correct scopes (FULL PROFILE and EMAIL ADDRESS), as below: However, after they log in, they get another login prompt that should not come up, and that ignores the initial scope request. It tells them that LinkedIN is only requesting their PROFILE OVERVIEW, which is incorrect: The problem must lie in my auth_controller, and I think it has do to with the url that is created in one of the authentication stages (definitely right after the user enters their LinkedIn authentication credentials).
