• Installshield Development Error durring the Installation process

  Hey guys, I've been stuck by a problem for the past couple days that makes no sense to me. My installer builds fine in the Installshiled IDE but when it is about to finish the installation, int gets two errors then rollbacks: installation failure. Right when the install bar is at about 100%, an error box pops up that states this: "Error 1001.Exception occurred while initializing the installation: System.IO.FileLoadException: Attempt to load an unverifiable executable with fixups (IAT with more than 2 sections or a TLS section.) (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131019)." The box pops up once, then the installer flashes its status to "rollback" then pops up another error box, then once 'ok'ed it procedes to rollback as usual. I don't understand that error message so i looked in the msi loggings and found this: "InstallShield 13:20:08: Initializing Property Bag... For some reason it looks like to me that installshield is trying to launch my program before it finishes the installation, even when I told it to prompt the user to decide to launch. Is this a registering command system that makes it attemp or what? I've been scouring the web all day and I've found some ideas, but I havent seen any solutions as of yet. The installers that I've tried(and failed) have always needed to be Setup.exes, when i try to build a .msi only setup I get this error message. It may help someone who knows more about this system than I do. Your project contains InstallShield prerequisites. A Setup.exe setup launcher is required if you are build a release that includes InstallShield prerequisites. Change your release settings to build Setup.exe, or remove the prerequisites from your project. -7076 There's nothing on the site that has anything from the error code, so I'm at a loss.   I have stated using the protobuf-net lib to communication between some of the programs I'm maintaining. I have also been able to decode messages from C# to Ruby. My ruby ProtoBuf lib is using a .proto file to generate the ruby code. In the interest of having to make changes in as few places as possible I would like to have protobuf-net use the same .proto file. Looking though the protobuf-net folders there is a Dll named ProtoBufGenerator and the protobuf exe but I cant find any instructions on if I can make protobuf-net work this way. Is this possible?

  Hi: This is a strange problem I encountered. I have an window application written in c# to do testing. It has a MDI parent form that is hosting a few children forms. One of the forms launch test cripts by creating processes and capture the scripts output to a text box. Another form open serial port and monitoring the status of the device I am working on(like a shell). If I ran both of them together, the output of the script seems only appear in the text box after the test is done. However, If I don't open the serial port form, the output of the script is captured in real time. Does anyone knows what's causing the problem? I notice the onDataReceived even handler for serial port form has a [SAThread] header to it. Will this cause the serial port thread having higher priority than other processes? Thanks in advance.

• asp.net connection reset with long running process

  In an asp.net web form, I keep getting a connection reset error message. The page is doing a some long running processing (about 2-5 minutes). I have no problem when the web request comes from the same machine as the web server. But when the request originates across the network, I get a connection reset error about 1:30 or 2 minutes into waiting for a response. I have set the in web.config for this application and put the application it's own application pool. What else can I try?

  I need to generate an event when a file is closed by another app. Unfortunately, ReadDirectoryChangesW doesn't report the close event. It would be possible for me to poll (with a TTimer) any file that reported by ReadDirectoryChangesW as modified, waiting for it to be closed (using CreateFile to detect this). However, what I'd prefer is a completely event driven solution. Is there a way to hook system calls and detect all file closing events? I simply want to know the path & name of any file that has just been closed.

• InstallShield 2010 with license - no license for automatic build system (CI) as Windows service

  I really need help here. We are using CI build-process (Hudson) as an automated build system using Msbuild. The CI run in Apache Tomcat 6 that run under the credentials of a domain user (not a local Windows user ). Every time the CI try to build an InstallShield project (using isproj files) we get a license error message: " C:\Program Files\MSBuild\InstallShield\2010\InstallShield.targets(62,3): error : -7159: The product license has expired or has not yet been initialized. You must launch the IDE to configure the product license in order to proceed. C:\Program Files\MSBuild\InstallShield\2010\InstallShield.targets(62,3): error : Exception Caught". If I log in to the same machine with the same domain user credentials and build the InstallShield project there is a license and it is working well. Adding the user to the local Users group doesn't help (no license). Adding the user to the local Administrators group helps and it is working. We do not want the user to be in the local Administrators group - for various reasons. What do I need to do to make it work? Do I need to add permissions to the use? Help will be highly appreciated. • Version control of software refactoring

  What is the best way of doing version control of large scale refactoring? My typical style of programming (actually of writing documents as well) is getting something out as quickly as possible and then refactoring it. Typically, refactoring takes place at the same time as adding other functionality. In addition to standard refactoring of classes and functions, functions may move from one file to another, files get split and merged or just reordered. For the time being, I am using version control as a lone user, so there is no issue of interaction with other developers at this stage. Still, version control gives me two aspects: Backup and ability to revert to a good version "in case". Looking at the history tells me how the project progressed and the flow of ideas. I am using mercurial on windows using TortoiseHg which enables selections of hunks to commit. The reason I mention this is that I would like advice on the granularity of a commit in refactoring. Should I split refactoring from functionality added always in committing? I have looked at the answers of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/68459/refactoring-and-source-control-how-to but it doesn't answer my question. That question focuses on collaboration with a team. This one concentrates on having a history that is understandable in future (assuming I don't rewrite history as some VCS seem to allow).

• VS 11 Beta Cannot start process because a file name has not been provided

  This is what I'm getting when I build my Test project: With this I'm unable to run my tests since they're not being discovered by VS. See the message "Unexpected error detected. Check the Tests Output Pane for details." at the window bottom. Now if you look at the Tests OUTPUT pane you'll have no clue about what's the problem. This is extremely helpful... :) I know VS 11 is in beta but it used to work... I've already restarted VS but it didn't work after that too. Any ideas about what's going on? Would it be a bug somewhere? Note: the only thing I can think is related with VS 2010 uninstall I did sometime ago. Maybe it uninstalled some necessary bits. Beats me...

My reasons for doing this is that I have a control that accepts a List of type TreeItem, whereas I have dozens of different types that are all in a tree like structure, and don't want to write seperate conversion methods for each type (trying to adhere to the DRY principle). Am I going about this the right way? Is there a better way of doing this perhaps?

• Start or ensure that Delayed Job runs when an application/server restarts.

  Hi there, We have to use delayed_job (or some other background-job processor) to run jobs in the background, but we're not allowed to change the boot scripts/boot-levels on the server. This means that the daemon is not guaranteed to remain available if the provider restarts the server (since the daemon would have been started by a capistrano recipe that is only run once per deployment). Currently, the best way I can think of to ensure the delayed_job daemon is always running, is to add an initializer to our Rails application that checks if the daemon is running. If it's not running, then the initializer starts the daemon, otherwise, it just leaves it be. The question, therefore, is how do we detect that the Delayed_Job daemon is running from inside a script? (We should be able to start up a daemon fairly easily, bit I don't know how to detect if one is already active). Anyone have any ideas?   Hi, let's say that I am a physicist and that I am the master of the universe when it comes to port salready existing oftware to GPU's with 100x or more speedups. Let's say that I find that some other scientist, which does not know how to program GPU, publishes the Open Source code in his/her website of a physical simulation program, in the field I am expert on. Let's say that I realize "I can port that code to GPU", and I suggest him, but he shows no interest. My interest here is, 1) to port it to GPU, 2) to publish this result in a scientific journal related with physics and/or computer science My question for you is 1- would you proceed here to port the code to GPU (or other new arch) and publish it? 2- how would you do it and which journal do you suggest? • How do I get Visual Studio build process to pass condition to library(external) project

  I have tried several solutions for this problem. Enough to know I do not know enough about MSBuild to do this elegantly but I feel like there should be a method. I have a set of libraries for working with .net projects. A few of the projects utilize System.Web.Mvc - which recently released Version 2 - and we are looking forward to the upgrade. Currently sites which reference this library reference it directly by the project(csproj) on the developer's computer - not a built version of the library so that changes and source code case easily be viewed when dealing code from this library. This works quite well and would prefer to not have to switch to binary references (but will if this is the only solution). The problem I have is that because of some of the functionality that was added onto the MVC1 based library (view engines, model binders etc) several of the sites reliant on these libraries need to stay on MVC1 until we have full evaluated and tested them on MVC2. I would prefer to not have to fork or have two copies on each dev machine. • How do you guys handle custom yum repository?

  I have a bunch of tools (nagios, munin, puppet, etc...) that gets installed on all my servers. I'm in the process of building a local yum repository. I know most folks just dump all the rpms into a single folder (broken down into the correct path) and then run createrepo inside the directory. However, what would happen if you had to update the rpms? I ask because I was going to throw each software into its own folder. Example one, put all packages inside one folder (custom_software) /admin/software/custom_software/5.4/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/5.4/x86_64 /admin/software/custom_software/4.6/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/4.6/x86_64 What I'm thinking of ... /admin/software/custom_software/nagios/5.4/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/nagios/5.4/x86_64 /admin/software/custom_software/nagios/4.6/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/nagios/4.6/x86_64 /admin/software/custom_software/puppet/5.4/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/puppet/5.4/x86_64 /admin/software/custom_software/puppet/4.6/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/puppet/4.6/x86_64 Ths way, if I had to update to the latest version of puppet, I can save manage the files accordingly. I wouldn't know which rpms belong to which software if I threw them into one big folder. Makes sense?

After a day or two WMIprvse takes up to 500M memory and WMI queries start getting out of memory exceptions.   I am getting ready to add another developer to my team and I want to try and fix the mistakes I made in my last hiring cycle. I like to think of myself as a competent programmer (I can be given a project, I can deliver on that project and the deliverable work with very few if any bugs) and so I ask questions that I would ask myself in an interview. I've come to the conclusion that my interviewing skills are completely lacking because the last two people I've hired interviewed incredibly well but have been less than ideal at the tasks that they've been given. My CTO (who was completely useless in giving any guidance as to how) suggested I improve on my interviewing skills. The question is this - How does one programmer interview another programmer and get an understanding of the other programmer's abilities? Edit: Though slightly different, the answers provided to this question could be of use to you. That question concerns specific interview questions while yours seems to be more general about interview approaches and not just about the questions themselves. Update: Just for the hell of it I asked two of the guys I worked with if they could do FizzBuzz. 45 minutes and 80 minutes to work it out. And these aren't bottom level guys either.

  I'm using the AJAX plugin from Andris Valums: AJAX Upload ( http://valums.com/ajax-upload/ ) Copyright (c) Andris Valums It works great, except for the fact that I cannot send proper JSON as a response. I'm setting the headers to 'Content-Type', 'application/json' before sending the JSON-encoded response, and in the plugin I'm saying that I'm expecting JSON: responseType: "json", This gives me a download popup asking to download the JSON/REPONSE file. The strange thing is, when I don't ass the correct "Content-Type" to my response, it works. Of course I want to pass the correct response type, because all my jQuery 1.4 calls are depending on correct JSON. Does anyone else have had this same problem or is there anyone out there willing to try this out ? I'd love to use this plugin but only when I can return proper JSON with the correct content-type Thanks for all your help!

  Suppose you're working on a project and the time/money budget does not allow 100% coverage of all code/paths. It then follows that some critical subset of your code needs to be tested.
