• Running Java Server Application 24/7 (NOT on local machine) ...?

  I am currently experimenting with Java Socket Programming and succeeded in creating a simple application that allows me to send data back and forth between a client and a server. I don't want to power my laptop (on which the server application runs) 24/7. Therefore, of course, no computer (that runs my client application) will be able to communicate with my selfmade server application as long as my laptop is turned off. Now I'd like to know: (1) Is it possible to run the server application on a remote (physical) server, so that I don't need my laptop for that purpose? (2) If yes, do you have any suggestions where I could rent such a remote server? As I said, I'm just curious about how all that stuff works. I don't really something expensive.

  Group policy prevents several configuration settings on my Windows 7 / Vista machines. Since my domain account is a member of the local Administrators group on these boxes, is there still a way to override them locally? For instance, GP prevents changing the power management option "Turn off the display" (even changing it from cmd fails: POWERCFG -X -monitor-timeout-ac 60 = "An unexpected error condition has occurred. Unable to perform operation. You may not have permission to perform this operation.") Even when logging on with a local account and not the domain account, it's not possible to change the setting anymore ..

• How to get into android phone without having to press any buttons

  I'm not a programmer, so I'm not sure what I'd needed to answer my question. I'm wondering if it's possible to program a way to half wake your cell phone screen without having to press any buttons or using the sensors. Like I've found you can do on the blackberry z10, you have an option to wake the screen by swiping up from a locked screen. I love android and will use it regardless, but I had to use a z10 for work for a while and stumbled upon that feature. It would be fantastic to have that feature with Android as hitting a power button can get annoying. Thanks in advance

• Why don't hardware failures show up at the programming language level?

  I am wondering if anyone can give my a good answer, or at least point me in the direction of a good reference to the following question: How come I have never heard of a computer breaking in a very fundamental way? How come when I declare x to be a double it stays as a double? How come there is never a short circuit that robs it of some bytes and makes it an integer? Why do we have faith that when we initialize x to 10, there will never be a power surge that will cause it to become 11, or something similar? I think I need a better understanding of memory. Thanks, and please don't bash me over the head for such a simple/abstract question.

• Multiply with negative integer just by shifting.

  Hi, I'm trying to find a way to multiply an integer value with negative value just with bit shifting. Usually I do this by shifting with the power of 2 which is closest to my factor and just adding / subtracting the rest, e.g. x * 7 = ((x << 3) - x) Let's say I'd want to calculate x * -112. The only way I can imagine is -((x << 7) - (x << 4), so to calculate x * 112 and negate it afterwards. Is there a "prettier" way to do this?

  I am seeking a simulator for thread scheduling at multi-core architecture, that is mapping threads to the cores at runtime. During runtime, simulator collects overall cache and IPC statistics. I checked below simulators, but seems there are not sufficient for me: Simplescalar: A simulator only for single core. SESC: multiprocessor simulator with detailed power, thermal, and performance models, QSim: provides instruction-level control of the emulated environment and detailed information about the executing instruction stream. It seems both SESC and QSim supports instructions scheduling instead of thread scheduling on the cores? Anyone can help provide some clues or share experience for this part?

• Is there a way to redirect ONLY stderr to stdout (not combine the two) so it can be piped to other programs

  I'm working in a Windows CMD.EXE environment and would like to change the output of stdout to match that of stderr so that I can pipe error messages to other programs without the intermediary of a file. I'm aware of the 2>&1 notation, but that combines stdout and stderr into a single stream. What I'm thinking of would be something like this: program.exe 2>&1 | find " " But that combines stdout and stderr just like: program.exe | find " " 2>&1 I realize that I could do... program 2>file type file | find " " del file But this does not have the flexibility and power of a program | find " " sort of notation. Doing this requires that program has finished with it's output before that output can be processed.

• QLogic QLE8152 won't link up with a fiber loop

  I have a Dell R710 running Debian Linux 6.0 (Squeeze). I installed a QLogic QLE8152 CNA in the PCI-E riser today and I have been trying to get the CNA's ethernet layer to come up after I put a fiber loop on it; I also scoped it with a light meter, and the SFP+ transceiver is getting the correct amount of light. The whole time I have been working on this problem, the lights on the CNA are blinking green at a rate of about 1 flash every 3 seconds. When I plug the fiber into a Juniper EX4500 10GE in a rack next to it, the Juniper's link stays down as well. I have to confess that this is my first wrangling with a CNA, so perhaps I'm doing something fundamentally wrong, but here is what I have found so far... First the basics... • How to interpolate hue values in HSV colour space?

  Hi, I'm trying to interpolate between two colours in HSV colour space to produce a smooth colour gradient. I'm using a linear interpolation, eg: h = (1 - p) * h1 + p * h2 s = (1 - p) * s1 + p * s2 v = (1 - p) * v1 + p * v2 (where p is the percentage, and h1, h2, s1, s2, v1, v2 are the hue, saturation and value components of the two colours) This produces a good result for s and v but not for h. As the hue component is an angle, the calculation needs to work out the shortest distance between h1 and h2 and then do the interpolation in the right direction (either clockwise or anti-clockwise). What formula or algorithm should I use? EDIT: By following Jack's suggestions I modified my JavaScript gradient function and it works well.   I've been working on this assignment, where I need to read in "records" and write them to a file, and then have the ability to read/find them later. On each run of the program, the user can decide to write a new record, or read an old record (either by Name or #) The file is binary, here is its definition: typedef struct{ char * name; char * address; short addressLength, nameLength; int phoneNumber; }employeeRecord; employeeRecord record; The way the program works, it will store the structure, then the name, then the address. Name and address are dynamically allocated, which is why it is necessary to read the structure first to find the size of the name and address, allocate memory for them, then read them into that memory. For debugging purposes I have two programs at the moment. I have my file writing program, and file reading. My actual problem is this, when I read a file I have written, i read in the structure, print out the phone # to make sure it works (which works fine), and then fread the name (now being able to use record.nameLength which reports the proper value too). Fread however, does not return a usable name, it returns blank. I see two problems, either I haven't written the name to the file correctly, or I haven't read it in correctly. Here is how i write to the file: where fp is the file pointer. record.name is a proper value, so is record.nameLength. Also i am writing the name including the null terminator. (e.g. 'Jack\0') fwrite(&record,sizeof record,1,fp); fwrite(record.name,sizeof(char),record.nameLength,fp); fwrite(record.address,sizeof(char),record.addressLength,fp); And i then close the file. here is how i read the file: fp = fopen("employeeRecord","r"); fread(&record,sizeof record,1,fp); printf("Number: %d\n",record.phoneNumber); char *nameString = malloc(sizeof(char)*record.nameLength); printf("\nName Length: %d",record.nameLength); fread(nameString,sizeof(char),record.nameLength,fp); printf("\nName: %s",nameString); Notice there is some debug stuff in there (name length and number, both of which are correct). So i know the file opened properly, and I can use the name length fine. Why then is my output blank, or a newline, or something like that? • Learn C# now or finish up with Java and then learn C#?

  Ok here is my situation. I've studied Java in my college for 2 semesters. But you know they teach you jack in there, just the basics. We skipped half of our textbook and even then our professors don't teach from section to section of each chapter. I don't blame them. It's hard as it is for new students to understand even the basic concepts of programming. Now this is a community college we are talking about and not Stanford, MIT or Berkeley. So like I said I've done 2 semester of Java. I really like our textbook because it has some challenging projects to do at the end of each chapter. This textbook is pretty clear and i have no problem understanding it (although 2-D and 3-D Arrays have given me some trouble). I have tried reading a few C# books such as Pro C# 2008 and .NET 3.5 and C# 4.0 in a Nutshell. I found these books to be dry and overloaded with information that put me to sleep (No offense to the authors of those 2 wonderful, according to amazon ratings, books). Would you suggest I finish my Java textbook, brush up my knowledge of Arrays, Polymorphism, and etc that are universal to most programming languages. And then switch to C#, plus the syntax is very similar so it should be easy to switch. Or should I just start learning C# right now from the very beginning? If it's the latter then could you recommend some free online resources that will keep me engaged and at the same time teach me everything I need to know about C#. Someone has recommended me to learn .NET first, but I found it to be not the brightest idea. .NET is just a big monster full of libraries. How am I going to apply it if I don't even know the C# or VB!? Anyway back to my question: Master Java and switch to C# or just go with C#? DISCLAIMER: I don't want to start .NET vs J2EE or C# vs Java flame war. I am going with C#. I've decided that I want to work in a Microsoft shop in the future. .NET is what I want to learn. Thanks! • VS 2010 JavaScript editor – matching braces highlighting – is it so difficult to implement?

  I do not know. Just curious. But first things first. As a web developer I spend about 80% of my work-time editing JavaScript code. And since my server-side platform is .NET then it would be very convenient to have decent JavaScript text editor within Visual Studio IDE. So, Visual Studio 2010 is out. Downloaded and installed. What were my expectations regarding JavaScript editor? Pretty low, actually.  I just wanted to have matching braces highlighted eventually. That’s all. Yes, I know about Ctrl + ] shortcut but it is not event remotely close to convenience. And the result? Alas. Without further ado, just look at some real-world fragment of code from jQuery Templates Proposal experimental plugin as I see it in Notepad++, Notepad2 and Visual Studio 2010 editors respectively: Notepad++ Notepad2 Visual Studio 2010 Look at the highlighted parentheses, regular expression literals, numbers. Do you have a feeling that the last screenshot is not very informative in comparison with the other ones? If yes, then my question is why? Instead I was given an IntelliSense. Sorry, but I do not need it to rot my mind. Especially the one which does not always work properly (try to use it with base2 library for example). With all the expressive power of the language I have to know what I am doing. Instead I still have the same plain old Notepad with some of the JavaScript keywords colorized, plus partially functional/useful IntelliSense. What I do need, is just a little help to make less errors when I type the code – some essential text editor facilities that I really need. Give me that and only then feel free to improve on something else. Maybe I am wrong. Then, sorry. Just cannot believe that I have to wait for another couple of years to get very basic code editor feature.

• Why i disconnect every few seconds? using USB wireless adapter

  i know it's for ubuntu questions..but mint and ubuntu are very similiar and i had the same problem with linux ubuntu too..so i think this is the right place for my question anyway i don't have experience with drivers and other things,after installing Linux on my machine( i did dist-upgrade btw) everything seem to be great because i didn't have to install any driver, after a while i realized that my connection stop after few minutes(actually it shows that I'm connected but it's not) so i have to reconnect and after few minutes it disconnect again.   Most people have heard of it but not everyone is familiar or comfortable with how to use this bastion of geekdom. This week we would like to know if you use the command line or not. The command line…the bastion of ultimate geekery in many peoples’ eyes. You often hear people referring to doing things using the command line, so there must be something to it, right? For some people using the command line is the best, most efficient, and easiest way to do things on their systems. These are the people that many of us wish we were like. Next you have those who are proficient at using the command line but do not rely on it for everything they do on their systems. Then there are people who know how to perform some tasks or hacks using the command line but may not be as comfortable or knowledgeable as they wish to be using it. Moving on you find those who are interested in learning how to use the command line and just need a small push to get started.  Perhaps you feel too intimidated to learn it and just need the right opportunity to come along. And maybe you do not care one way or the other so long as you get done what you want to do on your system. Or you may prefer to simply use a graphical interface since that is quicker and easier for you (along with being familiar).
