Facing quality issues

A workforce management software has complex GUI (for example values in a page depends on the status (closed or open) of other pages). Only latest and near past development has test coverage. During our last release, we received lots of bugs from customer in-spite of 2 weeks of testing Sprint . We don't have dedicated test team. The developers does the unit test & User acceptance test. Every day triggers automated regression test. I am afraid the developers are not testing the entire workflow because its time consuming also not able to automate it because of its complexity. Any suggestions ?. The legacy code (15 yrs development) has less code coverage. How can I improve quality ? Note: Now not possible to hire testers to have independent test team!!

Developing AI for warhammer board game [closed]

right now I'm going to develop a simple AI for some units for the board game warhammer fantasy. With some simple rules, I've read some things such as http://gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/21519/complex-game-ai-for-turn-based-strategy-games . I have the robots to move the pieces, the map is just simple(no hills,buildings..) and I need to start to give an AI for the robot to move the pieces. Problem is I have been searching for a long time and can't really find someone that has done something similar with warhammer, and I don't really know where to begin with or which tools I need to use. I would be glad if someone can give me some headsup on how to begin with, or if any programming language is better, not to mention if there is something similar where I could ask for help.

What would be a good way to request comments?

In the project/team I'm working the frequency of comments is a little low. One reason might be that it is not clear to the long-time devs what lines in the code really needs a comment (each part of the project has quite fixed devs). To increase this we plan to let team members review the code and check in "requests for comments", which the main dev of that part should replace with useful comments. Do you think this could work? If "yes": what tags should we use to mark? (e.g. //TODO please comment) Can you think of alternatives for this process? Edit: I appreciate your answers about best practice in commenting and writing code, and I completey agree. But my question targets the cases where refactoring is not an option (not wanting to change working code, not wanting to "accuse" main dev of producing code that needs refactoring,...) - so only more or better comments are an option (at least for this question).

Accessing controls of .aspx file in .aspx.cs without any declaration.!!??

I am able to access the controls of ".aspx" file in ".aspx.cs" directly without any declaration in ".aspx.cs" or in designer.cs. How is this possible? This is happeing only if I open website as using File System. Create a new ASP.NET web site application with Visual Studio 2008. So following three files will be created automatically "Default.aspx", "Default.aspx.cs" "Default.designer.cs" Now Delete "Default.designer.cs" perminently. Just create a button in Default.aspx file <asp:Button runat="server" Text="Save Plan" ID="btnSave" /> Close the Solution and open the website as File System. File -> Open Web Site -> File System -> Select Web Site Folder and Open the project. Versions: ClearCase: 7.1.1.2 Team Foundation Server: 2012 RTM Integration Tools: 2.2.20314.1 OS: Windows 2008 R2 ENT SP1 I was able to do a simple example migration of a few files by using the following approach: Using a dynamic view Creating a view shortcut drive (i.e. Z:\) Running the tools as a UI client (not as a windows service) Running the tools UI in user mode (do not “Run as Administrator”) Using the CC detailed history adapter Selecting the view shortcut drive (i.e. Z) on the Tools UI Connect to CC dialog Selecting the “Detect Changes in CC” option on the Tools UI Connect to CC dialog Changing the DisableTargetAnalysis value to True on the Tools UI configuration view I have yet to perform actual migrations for real projects, but will update this blog as I do.

Android - Basic CRUD (REST/RPC client) to remote server

There are lot of discussion about REST client implementation in android, based on the talk at GoogleIO 2010, by Virgil Dobjanschi. My requirement may not necessarily involved, as I have some freedom to choose the configuration. I only target tablets configuration changes can be prevented if no other easy way (fix at Landscape mode etc) I am trying to achieve. Basic CRUD operation to my server (JSON RPC/ REST). Basically mimic an ajax request from android app (no webview, need native app) Based on the above mentioned talk, and some reading I see these options. Implement any of the 3 mentioned in the Google IO talk Especially, the last pattern may be more suitable as I don't care much of caching. But not sure how "real time" is sync implementation. Use HTTP request in AsyncTask. Simplest, but need to avoid re-sending request during change in device configuration (orientation change etc). Even if I fix at one orientation, recreation of activity still happens. So need to handle it elegantly. Use service to handle http request. So far, it say use service for long ruiing request. Not sure whether it is a good approach for simple GET/POST/PUt requests. Please share your experience on what could be the best way.

What tools do you have at your disposal as a manager to promote a way of thinking

This question goes beoynd just programming, but I'd like to get some input on this, if that's okay with the community. Preferably from people that do a lot of coding themselves but also manage other people coding. My problem is this. We have all these ideas that we know is good for the overall strategy of the company and the problem is not figuring out what to do, it's to come about this change. Just telling someone to do things differently isn't enough and it's hard to promote a mind set that is shared within all of the company, (this will take time). If I could jump forward I'd like it if we could create a very nurturing company culture that promotes these ideals cross all areas but I'm not sure what tools to use. And by tools I mean anything I'm legally permitted to do. e.g. we could talk about, we could arrange traning sessions, we could spend more time in meeting (talk about it more), we could spend more time designing, we could spend more time pair-programming, we could add/remove incentive or we could encurage more play. Ultimately if we did all of these things what will be the recurring theme that ties this together. I'd like to be able to answer the question -- why should we do things like this? -- and come up with an answer that explains how important it is to think about our ideals from begining to end. I've puposly avoided to talk about or specifics of the situtation becuase I believe that it narrows things down too much. But I guess, by know you either know how to answer this question or you're as confused as I am ;) I'd love to hear from people who had to bring about a change in order to go from chaos to order, or fix something in the organization which wasn't working. And I'd like to hear it from the perspective of the developer and designer. -- or -- You could simply weigh in on what are the most important qualities in an organization encurage or stimulate rigid fun development cycle from start to finish?

Windows 2003 Domain Controller Very Upset about NIC Teaming

I set up BACS (Broadcom Teaming) to team two NIC on a Windows 2003 Active Directory Domain Controller. Networking still works okay, I can ping the gateway etc, but both DNS and Active Directory fail to start with various 40xx errors. The team that I created is Smart load Balancing with Failover, with one backup and only one in smart load balancing (So really it is just failover). I have the team the same IP address that the single active NIC had before. Anyone seen this before, or have any ideas what the problem might be? Mirror a Dropbox repository in Sharepoint and restrict access

I'm looking for an elegant way to solve the following problem: My development team uses Dropbox for sharing documents amongst our immediate group. We'd like to put some of those documents into a SharePoint repository for the larger group to be able to access, as granting Dropbox access to the group at large is not ideal. However, we'd like to continue to be able to propagate changes to the SharePoint site simply by updating the files in Dropbox on our local client machines, and also vice versa - users granted access on SharePoint that update files in that workspace should be able to save their files and the changes should appear automatically on our client PC's. I've already done the organization of the folders so that in Dropbox, there exists a SharePoint folder that looks something like this: SharePoint ----Team --------Restricted Access Folders ----Organization --------Open Access Folders The Dropbox master account and the SharePoint master account are both set up on my file server. Unfortunately, Dropbox doesn't seem to allow syncing of folders anywhere above the \Dropbox\ part of the file system's hierarchy - or all I would have to do is find where the Sharepoint repository is maintained locally, and I'd be golden. So it seems I have to do some sort of 2-way synchronization between the Dropbox folder on the file server and the SharePoint folder on the file server. I messed around with Microsoft SyncToy, but it seems to be lacking in the area of real-time updating - and as much as I love rsync, I've had nothing but bad luck with it on Windows, and again, it has to be kicked off manually or through Task Scheduler - and I just have a feeling if I go down that route, it's only a matter of time before I get conflicts all over the place in either Dropbox, SharePoint, or both. I really want something that's going to watch both folders, and when one item changes, the other automatically updates in "real-time". It's quite possible I'm going down the entirely wrong route, which is why I'm asking the question. For simplicity's sake, I'll restate the goal: To be able to update Dropbox and have it viewable on the SharePoint site, or to update the SharePoint site and have it viewable in Dropbox. And since I'm a SharePoint noob, I'll also need help hiding the "Team" subfolder from everyone not in a specific group in AD.
