• Block element, horizontal center aligned and minimum width possible

  Hi, I'm trying to have this block element to be horizontally aligned in the middle but at the same time I would like the width to be the minimum possible for the contents inside. But I don't think it's possible or I'm not able to do it myself... a#button-link { background: url("images/button-link.png") no-repeat scroll center left; margin: 12px auto 0 auto; display: block; width: 125px; height: 32px; line-height: 32px; padding-left: 35px; font-weight: bold; } This is my current code... The idea behind this is that the text for that tag could be slightly bigger or smaller depending on the user language and how much characters the same sentence has for that specific user's language. There's no way I can control but I still would like to have this element horizontally aligned to center. Is this possible with CSS?

• Will IntelliTrace(tm) (historical debugging) be available for unmanaged c++ in future versions of Vi

  I love the idea of historical debugging in VS 2010. However, I am really disappointed that unmanaged C++ is left out. IntelliTrace supports debugging Visual Basic and C# applications that use .NET version 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, or 4. You can debug most applications, including applications that were created by using ASP.NET, Windows Forms, WPF, Windows Workflow, and WCF. IntelliTrace does not support debugging C++, script, or other languages. Debugging of F# applications is supported on an experimental basis. (editorial) [This is really poor support in my opinion. .NET is less in need of this assistance than unmanaged c++. I an getting a little tired of the status of plain old C++ and its second-class status in the MS tools world. Yes, I realize it is probably WAAY easier to implement this with .NET and MS are pushing .NET as the future, and yes, I know that C++ is an "old" language, but that does not diminish the fact that there are lots of C++ apps out there and there will continue to be more apps built with C++. I sincerely hope MS has not dropped C++ as a supported developer tool/language- that would be a shame.] Does anyone know if there are plans for it to support C++?

  I have a template with has text in it. It's located in /templates under my project directory. I'm trying to do Japanese now. I create a directory called "locale" in my project directory. Then, I set up this in my settings: gettext = lambda s: s LANGUAGES = ( ('de', gettext('German')), ('en', gettext('English')), ('ja', gettext('Japanese')), ) After that, I run this command: django-admin.py makemessages -l ja The only problem is, this doesn't work!   In Monads for natural language semantics, Chung-Chieh Shan shows how monads can be used to give a nicely uniform restatement of the standard accounts of some different kinds of natural language phenomena (interrogatives, focus, intensionality, and quantification). He defines two composition operations, A_M and A'_M, that are useful for this purpose. The first is simply ap. In the powerset monad ap is non-deterministic function application, which is useful for handling the semantics of interrogatives; in the reader monad it corresponds to the usual analysis of extensional composition; etc. This makes sense. The secondary composition operation, however, has a type signature that just looks bizarre to me: (<?>) :: (Monad m) => m (m a -> b) -> m a -> m b (Shan calls it A'_M, but I'll call it <?> here.) The definition is what you'd expect from the types; it corresponds pretty closely to ap: g <?> x = g >>= \h -> return $ h x I think I can understand how this does what it's supposed to in the context of the paper (handle question-taking verbs for interrogatives, serve as intensional composition, etc.). What it does isn't terribly complicated, but it's a bit odd to see it play such a central role here, since it's not an idiom I've seen in Haskell before. Nothing useful comes up on Hoogle for either m (m a -> b) -> m a -> m b or m (a -> b) -> a -> m b. Does this look familiar to anyone from other contexts? Have you ever written this function?

• Backreferences syntax in replacement strings (why dollar sign?)

  In Java, and it seems in a few other languages, backreferences in the pattern is preceded by a slash (e.g. \1, \2, \3, etc), but in a replacement string it's preceded by a dollar sign (e.g. $1, $2, $3, and also $0). Here's a snippet to illustrate: System.out.println( "left-right".replaceAll("(.*)-(.*)", "\\2-\\1") // WRONG!!! ); // prints "2-1" System.out.println( "left-right".replaceAll("(.*)-(.*)", "$2-$1") // CORRECT! ); // prints "right-left" System.out.println( "You want million dollar?!?".replaceAll("(\\w*) dollar", "US\\$ $1") ); // prints "You want US$ million?!?" If not, what language started it? What flavors use it and what don't? Why is this a good idea? Why not stick to the same pattern syntax? Wouldn't that lead to a more cohesive and an easier to learn language? Wouldn't the syntax be more streamlined if statements 1 and 4 in the above were the "correct" ones instead of 2 and 3?

• Phonegap bluetooth plugin not working

  First time poster here , so I'm sorry if this question is asked incorrect or if there are any issues. I'm working on a phonegap app for which I need to be able to set up a bluetooth connection between a tablet (android in this case) and a Win CE PC. Currently i'm trying to get the bluetooth part to work on the tablet and i'm using the plug in you can find at https://github.com/tanelih/phonegap-bluetooth-plugin And for the momemt I'm just trying to enable and disable the Bluetooth on the device. In my bluetoothpage.js file i'm using the following method window.bluetooth.prototype.enable(bluetoothTestSucces(),bluetoothTestFail()); The bluetoothTestSucces and bluetoothTestFail functions just show an alert, nothing else. And if i understand the working of phonegap plugins correctly this uses the following code in my bluetooth.js file Bluetooth.prototype.enable = function(onSuccess, onError) { exec(onSuccess, onError, "Bluetooth", "enable", []); } which calls private void enable(JSONArray args, CallbackContext callbackCtx) { try { _bluetooth.enable(); callbackCtx.success(); } catch(Exception e) { this.error(callbackCtx, e.getMessage(), BluetoothError.ERR_UNKNOWN); } } in my BluetoothPlugin.java file. And if the java file returns Succes bluetoothTestSucces() is used and if the java file returns an error bluetoothTestFail() is used. But for some reason it runs both and does not turn on bluetooth on my device. I'm almost certain I've forgotten a link to a file or have linked it wrong somewhere. But I've followed the instructions that were included in the plugin. • Classic ASP - Email form with attached file - please help

  Hi Guys, Ive got abit of a problem ive got an email web form that send the input to an email address but what I now need is a file input field were the user can also send an image as an attachment. So contact name, logo (attachment). Ive been told in order to send the attachment it needs to be saved in a folder on my hosting before it can be sent. Ive spoken to the hosting company and they dont have anything in place to make this easier such as aspupload.   I have IIS6 compression setup, and static content is being compressed correctly as per Coding Horror. • Non-wiki CMS for an online user guide

  For a large web application I'm building, I need to create an extensive user guide. The first thought was a wiki, but what I've seen lacks the ease of customization I've seen in CMSs, and has a lot of extra features I don't need. The number of users editing the document is small and closed, but it needs to be editable by non-technical users. The number of pages will likely be between 50-100. It also needs to be searchable. It would also be a plus if it had nice readable urls to link to from our web app. Right now, my best guess is WordPress, but that seems a lot more geared towards blogging with just a handful of pages, than having several pages, and possibly no blogs. There isn't a language requirement, although we have the most experience with Java and PHP. We aren't looking to have to do any major coding other than customizing for visuals, so hopefully the language will not be too important. Again, I'm not looking for the best general purpose CMS, just something that would be easiest for a user guide.

• Any high-level languages that can use c libraries?

  I know this question could be in vain, but it's just out of curiosity, and I'm still much a newb^^ Anyways I've been loving python for some time while learning it. My problem is obviously speed issues. I'd like to get into indie game creation, and for the short future, 2d and pygame will work. But I'd eventually like to branch into the 3d area, and python is really too slow to make anything 3d and professional. So I'm wondering if there has ever been work to create a high-level language able to import and use c libraries? I've looked at Genie and it seems to be able to use certain libraries, but I'm not sure to what extent. Will I be able to use it for openGL programing, or in a c game engine? I do know some lisp and enjoy it a lot, but there aren't a great many libraries out there for it. Which leads to the problem: I can't stand C syntax, but C has libraries galore that I could need! And game engines like irrlicht. Is there any language that can be used in place of C around C? Thanks so much guys

• GUI toolkit for Unicode text app?

  In developing a tool for processing text in exotic scripts, I'm having trouble choosing a GUI toolkit. The main part of the interface is to be a text editor, not much more elaborate than Notepad, but with its own input method editor. It is to be extensible in a scripting language so that non-programmers can develop their own input methods and display routines. It will be assumed that all files are UTF-8. More elaborate support like regexes is not needed. The main sticking points are: characters beyond the Basic Multilingual Plane right-to-left and bi-directional text extension in a scripting language cross-platform Linux/Windows/OS X My first choice was Tcl/Tk, but it lacks bidi and going beyond the BMP seems dodgy. At the other extreme, I've considered Qt with embedded ECMAScript, but that might be heavier and less malleable than I would like. I'm even thinking about making it browser based, but I'm concerned that the IM for large scripts would be too heavy for client-side processing. I've also looked at a few similar projects in Java, but the quality of the font rendering in SWING has been unacceptable. What are your experiences in handling Unicode with various toolkits? Are there other serious issues I haven't considered? What would you recommend for doing this in the lightest way?

• In JSF - What is the correct way to do this? Two dropdown lists with dependency.

  Hi, I'm making two dropdown lists in JSF which are dependent. Specifically, one list has all the languages and the second list contains values that are displayed in the currently selected language. I've implemented this by having the second list use information from a Hash and rebuilding that Hash in the setter of the currently selected language. JSF Code Bit: <rich:dropDownMenu value="#{bean.currentlySelectedLanguage}" id="languageSelector"> ... (binding to languages hash) ... <rich:dropDownMenu value="#{bean.currentlySelectedScript}" id="ScriptPullDown"> ... (binding to scripts hash) ... Backing Bean Code Bit: setCurrentlySelectedLanguage(String lang){ this.currentlySelectedLanguage = lang; rebuildScriptNames(lang); } I'm wondering if that's a good way of doing this or if theres a better method that I am not aware of. Thank you! EDIT - Adding info.. I used a a4j:support that with event="onchange" and ReRender="ScriptPullDown" to rerender the script pull down. I could probably add an action expression to run a method when the value changes. But is there a benefit to doing this over using code in the setter function?

• How can I create an executable to run on a certain processor architecture (instead of certain OS)?

  So I take my C++ program in Visual studio, compile, and it'll spit out a nice little EXE file. But EXEs will only run on windows, and I hear a lot about how C/C++ compiles into assembly language, which is runs directly on a processor. The EXE runs with the help of windows, or I could have a program that makes an executable that runs on a mac. But aren't I compiling C++ code into assembly language, which is processor specific? My Insights: I'm guessing I'm probably not. I know there's an Intel C++ compiler, so would it make processor-specific assembly code? EXEs run on windows, so they advantage of tons of things already set up, from graphics packages to the massive .NET framework. A processor-specific executable would be literally starting from scratch, with just the instruction set of the processor. Would this executable be a file-type? We could be running windows and open it, but then would control switch to processor only? I assume this executable would be something like an operating system, in that it would have to be run before anything else was booted up, and have only the processor instruction set to "use".

  I'm making a generator of LL(1) parsers, my input is a CoCo/R language specification. I've already got a Scanner generator for that input. Suppose I've got the following specification: COMPILER 1. CHARACTERS digit="0123456789". TOKENS number = digit{digit}. decnumber = digit{digit}"."digit{digit}. PRODUCTIONS Expression = Term{"+"Term|"-"Term}. Term = Factor{"*"Factor|"/"Factor}. Factor = ["-"](Number|"("Expression")"). Number = (number|decnumber). END 1. So, if the parser generated by this grammar receives a word "1+1", it'd be accepted i.e. a parse tree would be found. My question is, the character "+" was never defined in a token, but it appears in the non-terminal "Expression". How should my generated Scanner recognize it? It would not recognize it as a token. Is this a valid input then? Should I add this terminal in TOKENS and then consider an error routine for a Scanner for it to skip it? How does usual language specifications handle this?

• Legitimate uses of the Function constructor

  As repeatedly said, it is considered bad practice to use the Function constructor (also see the ECMAScript Language Specification, 5th edition, § 15.3.2.1): new Function ([arg1[, arg2[, … argN]],] functionBody) (where all arguments are strings containing argument names and the last (or only) string contains the function body). To recapitulate, it is said to be slow, as explained by the Opera team: Each time […] the Function constructor is called on a string representing source code, the script engine must start the machinery that converts the source code to executable code. This is usually expensive for performance – easily a hundred times more expensive than a simple function call, for example. (Mark ‘Tarquin’ Wilton-Jones) Though it's not that bad, according to this post on MDC (I didn't test this myself using the current version of Firefox, though). Crockford adds that [t]he quoting conventions of the language make it very difficult to correctly express a function body as a string. In the string form, early error checking cannot be done. […] And it is wasteful of memory because each function requires its own independent implementation. Another difference is that a function defined by a Function constructor does not inherit any scope other than the global scope (which all functions inherit). (MDC) Apart from this, you have to be attentive to avoid injection of malicious code, when you create a new Function using dynamic contents. Lots of disadvantages and it is intelligible that ECMAScript 5 discourages the use of the Function constructor by throwing an exception when using it in strict mode (§ 13.1). That said, T.J. Crowder says in an answer that [t]here's almost never any need for the similar […] new Function(...), either, again except for some advanced edge cases. So, now I am wondering: what are these “advanced edge cases”? Are there legitimate uses of the Function constructor?

• How do the size standard libraries compare for different languages

  Someone was recently raving about how great jQuery was and how it made javascript into a pleasure and also how the whole source code was so small(and one file). I looked it up on www.ohloh.net/ and it said it was about 30,000 lines of javascript, when I tired curl piped to wc it said about 5000 lines(strange discrepancy that, maybe test suites, ect?). I thought well it isn't that strange since javascript from what I've heard has a lot of fun dynamic tricks, so you can probably get away with a small library. But then I thought what about other high level languages, the ones with large standard libraries and wondered how big the standard are for python/ruby/haskell/pharo(smalltalk)/*ml/ect. (libraries not vm stuff to the degree its possible to separate it) Anybody know? • Use of Syntactic Sugar / Built in Functionality

  I was busy looking deeper into things like multi-threading and deadlocking etc. The book is aimed at both pseudo-code and C code and I was busy looking at implementations for things such as Mutex locks and Monitors. This brought to mind the following; in C# and in fact .NET we have a lot of syntactic sugar for doing things. For instance (.NET 3.5): lock(obj) { body } Is identical to: var temp = obj; Monitor.Enter(temp); try { body } finally { Monitor.Exit(temp); } There are other examples of course, such as the using() {} construct etc. My question is when is it more applicable to "go it alone" and literally code things oneself than to use the "syntactic sugar" in the language? Should one ever use their own ways rather than those of people who are more experienced in the language you're coding in? I recall having to not use a Process object in a using block to help with some multi-threaded issues and infinite looping before. I still feel dirty for not having the using construct in there. • How can I provide users with the functionality of the DBUnit DatabaseOperation methods from a web in

  I am currently updating a java-based web application which allows database developers to create stored procedure regression test suites for database testing. Currently, for test setup, execution and clean-up stages, the user is provided with text boxes where they are able to enter SQL code which is executed by the isql command. I would like to extend the application to use DB Unit’s DatabaseOperation methods to provide more ways to setup the state of the database than just SQL statements. The main reason for using Db Unit rather than just SQL statements is to be able to create and store xml and xls DataSets on a server where they can be associated with their test cases and used for data setup. My question is: How can I provide users with the functionality of the DBUnit DatabaseOperation methods from a web interface? I have considered: Creating a simple programming language and a parser to read some simple syntax involving the DB Unit method names which accept a parameter being the file location to an xml or xls DataSet. I was thinking of allowing the user to register the files they need with the web app which would catalogue them and provide each file with an identifier which could passed as a parameter to the methods in this simple programming language. Creating an XML DTD which provides the user with the ability to specify operations and parameters. If I went this approach, how can I execute the methods and their parameters that I parse from the XML document? Creating a table in the database which stores the method and a FK relation to a catalogued DataSet file, however I don’t think this would be good solution due to the fact that data entry would be tedious. • Ways to gain a deeper understanding of programming concepts?

  I'm a marketer and have been messing around in PHP/MySQL for years. Recently (the last several months) I've been making my own scripts/programs in Python and I've really enjoyed the whole problem solving process. I've read(skimmed) some books and understand the basics of OOP, polymorphism, etc.. I have a general interest in AI and Natural Language in particular but it seems these things require a masters in Computer Science. My knowledge of math is poor. The last class I took was calculus, and I've forgotten the majority of it. Basically I'm looking for things to learn that will help me think in a more analytic way, and maybe see solutions where I didn't before. Improving my ability to program in Python would be nice too. I don't need to learn a specific language or something for employment, just enjoyment. Although my work often involves web development so some utility would be nice. I don't like learning concepts by just reading them. I need to apply them, even if the examples are contrived. A recommendation of a couple good books or other resources would be nice. :) Apologies if this is too vague/misplaced...
