  I'm playing around with NHibernate 3.0. So far things are pretty cool. I'm trying to attach an entity that wasn't detached previously: var post = new Post(){ Id = 2 } session.Update(post); // Thought this would work but it doesn't. post.Title = "New Title After Update"; session.Flush(); Is this possible so that only Title gets updated? This is currently possible in EntityFramework. I'd like to not have to load Post from the database when I just need to update a few properties.

• Since Google reduces the value of links alongside nofollow links, what is an alternative?

  Since 2009, Google counts nofollow links also as outgoing links, and thus reduces the value of the other links. What are some alternatives to stop Google counting outside links from my page? If I make links appear on my page source like this: <span hrefs="http://link" rel="nofollow" link="true">Link Name</span> and then in JavaScript replace span with a tag and replace hrefs with href for every span tag that has link="true". Will this help?

• Looking for python lib to manage remote tasks

  Hi, I have server with django on it, this server runs some manage.py commands and update database. Now I need to move some of this tasks to different servers. I don't want to allow remote db access and need some tool\lib to be able to start task on remote servers by main server's command and update tasks code/add new tasks. I have ssh access to every server, all servers run under debian and all code in python. I was thiking about creating my own xmpp based solution(server sends messages to slave servers with commands to execute, like "update task", "run task"), or maybe some low-level ssh based solution where main server logs to slave servers and executes bash commands. But I would be happy to hear any advices.

• Can I stagger UpdatePanel updates in .NET?

  I have a situation in which I select an account and I want to bring back its details. This is a single UpdatePanel round trip and its quite quick. In addition, I need to bring back some transactional information which is from a much bigger table and takes a couple of seconds for the query to come back. Ideally, I would like to put this into a second update panel and update this additional information once it has been received, but after the first update panel has updated i.e. the user sees: Change account See account details (almost instant) See transactional info (2 seconds later) The only way I can think of doing this is to use javascript to cause a SECOND postback once the account details have been retrieved to get the transaction information. Is there a better way?

• How do you insert new entries into an Access db table through an ASP.net website?

  I need to insert new records into an Access database. I'm using Visual Studio 2008 and firstly create a asp.net website. I can connect to the information in Access databse using dataview or gridview and can query a particular entry (ie. Proposal No. -brings up all details linking to that proposal). I can then edit the details of that proposal and this would update the Access Db. What I need to do is to have a form that simply enters new details for a new customer. ie. Enter name [__] Enter Adress[__]. Then for this to update the database. By using the gridview or dataview I am able to view all fields that exist in the table and edit them. Is there a way that I can get a blank gridview/dataview template (which includes all the fields in the table) and fill it out to then update the database? Thanks

I fixed that by adding a maximum number of loops. Is there a better fix?

  Hi i'm doing a fb app that update the status box(what's in your mind), i'm using set_status from facebooker .. first i have this error: set_status needs extended permission so i google it and find this: before_filter :ensure_has_status_update .. so i put it in my controller and that solves the problem, but when i try to update the status, all ways redirect me to a fb page that says: You have already granted permissions to this application. so i go to the controller comment before_filter :ensure_has_status_update and then go to my app again and it works.. so i want to do this if (has_status_update == false) ask for permision else update the status i google it for a long time but i can't find an answer..

  In order to fix a bug, I have to iterate over all the rows in a table, updating a cached count of children to what its real value should be. The structure of the things in the table form a tree. We have a validation before update/save (example simplified).. var setting = Get("key") setting.Value = "helo" //for whatever reason, this particular //setting cannot have its value saved to the database ... Verify(setting); //throws base.Update(setting); but since the object is attached, any changes already happened in the session, even if the validation throws, and never reaches Update. What is the proper way to handle this?

• How do I switch java versions to an earlier version in Fedora 17?

  I just installed Fedora 17. I'm setting up the Android Build Environment and need Java. I downloaded and installed jdk-6u32-linux-amd64.rpm I ran java -version and it spit out the correct version. Well a day or two later i tried my first compile in Fedora 17 and it complained about java and failed. I ran java -version again and low and behold it spits out $ java -version java version "1.7.0_03-icedtea" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (fedora-2.1.fc17.7-x86_64) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode) I'm stumped. I mean, i've run the update/upgrade commands since i installed but i didn't think that updated full version revisions... So, I ran alternatives --config java and that only gave me the java 1.7 version. While digging around more I discovered that the recommended version of Java for the build environment is jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin so I downloaded that from here: Oracle Download When I ran: sudo sh jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin it returned: Unpacking... Checksumming... Extracting...   Assuming that you have an app infrastructure that generally only requires: ASP.NET MVC / C# / .NET Database or NoSQL data store (must be accessible from C#) Here's the challenge to you server gods: What is the least expensive configuration that will allow you to deploy to production in a way that doesn't break any licensing rules? In what ways does this solution differ from the "standard" Microsoft deployment scenario? Where does this solution's performance break down once the app begins to scale? I'm not concerned about the hardware, only the server software itself. I would love to hear about any solutions you've personally put into production. Especially if they are unique alternatives. For ideas, consider some of the possible variations, a) any Microsoft server solutions where they have lowered the barrier to entry to compete with OSS, or b) any OSS alternatives to Microsoft products which perform at a similar level. An example of a): SQL Server 2008 Express Edition SP1 is a 100% free version of SQL Server which will scale to the needs of many smaller / early stage applications. An example of b): running the Mono Framework on Linux. An example of differing from the "standard" stack: running Mono on Linux will require a completely different server OS familiarity. None of the Windows-based knowledge really transfers. An example of breaking down under scale: SQL Server Express will only scale to 1GB of memory and 4GB of disk storage. After that point, the application will need to move to one of the paid versions of SQL Server.

• How to speed up request/response to django using apache or another solution?

  Hey all, I'm mainly a developer, but every now and again I jump into the sys-admin position. For the most part I've gotten away with deploying php and python apps using apache. I write today because I'm starting to research faster alternatives to apache, yet still have some of the core features I require like put and delete methods and the ability to connect to a socket via apache. ( This I have not tried, but might be a nice whistle if I ever employ comet on my apps. ) As you've probably guessed, I use javascript exclusively for all my websites utilizing deep linking for SEO support. The main areas that I'm looking to increase performance is the connection between the django apps and the web server to the client response. Every day I work my best to keep the smallest memory foot print as possible, however I am getting to the end of my rope when it comes to working with apache. In general, keep in mind that I'm just starting this research so I'm looking more for material to read then solutions at this moment. My main questions: Am I missing something about apache that makes it faster then everything else? What would be a good server environment to deploy just static files one? What are some of the leading open-source and paid alternatives?

• What sound cards are there besides Creative's that offer benefits for gaming?

  Many years (6? 7?) ago I bought an Audigy sound card to replace the onboard sound and was astonished at the improvement in games. It was a completely different sound, the whole experience became way more immersive. As the time has passed however the card has become old. The support for the latest Windows versions is declining and newer technologies have definitely been developed. So I was starting to wonder - what newer hardware exists? Sure, there is the Sound Blaster X-Fi, but that's quite expensive and I'm not entirely thrilled by past policies of Creative either (like the whole affair with Daniel_K). But are there any alternatives? EAX is a patent by Creative, so it's doubtful that any other manufacturer has implemented it. And I haven't heard of any competing standards either. To clarify, what I would like is something like a "sound accelerator". A sound card that would offload sound processing from my CPU while at the same time giving astounding effects that would be impractical to do on CPU in the first place. I'm not interested in absurd sampling rates (for the most time I can't tell MP3 and a CD apart) or uncountable channels (I'm using stereo headphones). But I am interested in special effects in games. Are there any alternatives or is Creative a monopoly in this market?

• How to make a redundant desktop system with daily snapshots? (Is btrfs ready for use?)

  I want to configure a desktop system in which the home filesystem would be redundant (e.g. RAID-1), and would have weekly snapshots taken. I've already done this with ZFS, the snapshot system is wonderful, and with send/recv you can easily create backups on external media. Unfortunately, at that point, I want GNU+Linux and not FreeBSD or Solaris, so I'm looking for suggestions for good alternatives. I reckon that my alternatives are: btrfs - it seems to be exactly what I need, it has snapshots and commands that allow you to easily replicate zfs send. Yet all documentation mentions that it's still experimental. I can't seem to find any actual reports on its reliability or usability issues. Can you point me to any information on that issue that could clarify whether it would be a possible choice? I have a large preference for this option, mostly because I don't want to reformat the drives when btrfs becomes ready, but I there's no information on whether it's usable at all, whether it's a silly idea to use it, etc. The question that I cannot get the answer to is what does "experimental" mean. lvm snapshots and ext4 - preferably not, since it can consume an awful amount of space when new files are created. Creating 200 GB files requres 200 GB free space and 200 GB additionally for snapshots. I also have found it unreliable -- failed metadata rewrite results in an unreadable PV. I'm wondering how btrfs would compare here. A single filesystem (ext4) on a RAID-1 array with custom COW snapshots with hardlinks (like cp -al). That's my current preference if I can't use btrfs. So how experimental btrfs is, which should I choose, and do I have any other options? What if I don't keep external incremental backups, would that affect my choice?

  We need to share large files with clients, e.g. clients upload a large file, we modify it and later make it available for download. Up until now we've used FTP but this has a number of drawbacks. A lot of management of files and setting up accounts etc. We are therefore considering online alternatives. Requirements: Cheap, 8-) Easy to use, ideally just requiring a web browser, but also possible for power users to connect e.g. via FTPS/SFTP No registration requried for users to upload/download files. We ourselves of course need to be able to login an view uploaded files and upload new files. No per user fee High bandwidth. As files may be GBs in size both upload and download speed cannot be too slow Secure. Encryption during upload/download. No way for users to access uploaded files. Once a user has uploaded a file they (or anyone else besides us) should be able to access the file. To download files users get a link with a password. Ideally the link expires after a set time. No software installation We do NOT need any sync features, backup, versioning etc. Just a quick, easy, secure way for us to share files with our clients. Services like JustCloud, DriveHQ etc seems bloated and "too much" for what we need. What other alternatives exist? Thanks!

• Secure filesharing protocol for fileserver

  I'm setting up a fileserver, and I want lots of clients to easily access it. Up to now I've always used SSHFS to share between different PCs, but since I'm setting up a single fileserver, I'm looking for other common alternatives. Up to now I've seen: AFS: It seems it has no security, traffic is unencrypted, so it would require an SSH tunnel. If I'm to use SSH, I'd just use SSHFS. NFS: Same as above. Also, setting up the server is not so straighforward, it doesn't seem to be KISS enough - at least not for my liking. SMB: Same as AFS. It also seems not to be too well documented, and technically, seems a bit poor. It also seems the protocol isn't formally standardized. SSHFS has security, but as a downside, requieres every user to have an account on the server - there's no way to make a certain directory PUBLIC either. I don't think it has locking, and isn't very fault-tolerant. Are there any alternatives I've missing?
