  • Finding inspiration / help for making up (weapon) names

    I'm really bad with words, especially with English words. Currently I'm struggling to make a good weapon names for my game, it needs to display the weapon functionality (weak/strong/fast/ballistic etc) correctly as well. For example the best weapon in a (futuristic) game cannot be called just with the name "Laser", it's just too boring, right? Are there any tools, websites or anything that helps me finding good names for weapons? (or anything else similar). I was thinking to use scientific names, but noticed that they are really hard to write, and they get very long, and I also lack information about science, I only know I could use the atomic sub-particles names in the weapons for example. How do I get started with becoming good with making up names? (this could apply in generally to any naming problems).

  • Ubuntu 12.10 Help! Everything is incredibly slow

    I installed 12.10 from usb onto this machine. Intel celeron 2.00 GHz 496MB RAM I had to modify GNU-Grub to read "nomodeset" or i could not see the GUI. I have an Nvidia graphics card. Takes about 2 minutes to boot. The icons on the left of desktop take about 1 min to slowly open their menu. Have a network connection but mozilla is 404 and i cannot update. Where can i find a blow by blow explanation for troubleshooting and repairing this problem?

  • Help with dual booting Windows 8.1 Professional and Ubuntu 13.10

    I recently installed a clean version of Windows 8.1 Professional on my Lenovo Y500 (with Samsung 256GB 840 Pro SSD). I have Windows all set up and running normally. I am trying to dual boot Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 13.10, but the installation procedure don't allow me to either "Install alongside..." or shows my SSD partitions correctly when I chose the "Something Else" option. I have created a 25GB partition of free space in the Windows disk manager, but on the installation screen on Ubuntu, it shows the whole drive as a free space. I have tried installing with a burned .ISO disk and a bootable USB, the results are the same for both.   • Can you help diagnose why this laptop running ubantu has crashed and seemingly died

    Love any suggestions you have to this problem. My laptop had Window Vista on previously (sorry). Something went wrong, I can't remember, and I tried to reinstall but couldn't, installed a replacement second hand HD, and installed Ubantu instead. It worked ok for a little while, before crashing. I ended up reloading Ubantu three times. It works for a while after (say 3-5 hrs of domestic web browsing), and then crashes. When I turn it on now, it comes up with some options to restart in safe mode, run tests and so on. I can't get it to start normally. I'm not going to re-install again. Below are screen shots of what happens when I follow some of these test options. These screen shots mean nothing to me. Any ideas?     I have a Acer Aspire Revo nettop and it seems like it's a common error that Ubuntu doesn't have a driver for the ethernet.   • Partitioning with preseed help

    I have a server that has 4 hds inside all in stadalone configurations (no hardware raid). I want using preseed to create a "regular" partition on disk1 on which i ll install ubuntu and create a raid 0 array with the remainning three disks. Is this possible? Can i use partman-auto/method twice inside the preseed file once for regular and once for raid? I need to use this for unattended provisioning so i need to set my disks inside the preseed file. My project is complete in the sense that it's a fully functional, ready to go 1.0 version. However, that's not good enough for my standards. My expertise is in HTML/CSS, not jQuery and PHP. I'm looking for someone to refine every character of my code for quality, speed, security and compatibility. I want everything to be as bug free as possible for launch. So I need an expert programmer who's a perfectionist in their coding who cares about the quality of their work (not just making it work) to review and refine my code. I'm sure I can't outright post the project's details and hope for interested parties to contact me as that wouldn't be beneficial to the community so instead I'm looking for advice from programmers about where some of best places to hire quality programmers are and the best strategies to hire the right programmer.   • Ubuntu 12.10 update doesnt boot. (please help)

    my name is Anthony. I updated to 12.10 and it the OS will not load accept in "pae" under advanced options. I used the boot repair cd, the only thing that workds is the monodeset option in the kernel and the graphics are terrible, mouse disappears and unity will not boot. Ubuntu 12.04 Runs great, on a clean install of 12.10 Ubuntu 12.10 wont even load to install unless under monodeset. I get left a termial like screen with just a bilking bar. Im running a HP Compaq NC6400 Laptop, Ubuntu 32-bit, 2gb ram.

  • Some help understanding and modifying a 2D shader

    I have a similar question as the one posed here, except that I don't wish to use a 1D Color Palette. I simply wish to have it display 1 color of my choosing (red, for example). I plan to use this as a "shield" effect for a 2D ship. I also wish to understand how it works a little bit better, as I'll be the first to admit that shaders in general are not my strongest suit. I'm not asking for an overview of HLSL (as that is too broad of a subject), just an explanation of how this shader works, and the best way to implement it in a 2D game. Code examples would be ideal (even if they are theoretical) but if the answer is explained well enough, I might be able to manage with plain old text. This is also in XNA 4.0. Thanks in advance.

  • Help with calculation to steer ship in 3d space

    I'm a beginner using XNA to try and make a 3D Asteroids game. I'm really close to having my space ship drive around as if it had thrusters for pitch and yaw. The problem is I can't quite figure out how to translate the rotations, for instance, when I pitch forward 45 degrees and then start to turn - in this case there should be rotation being applied to all three directions to get the "diagonal yaw" - right?     I am trying to remove the context name from the url of my server. Current URL - http://www.domainname.com/MyApp/ What I need to make is to make it avaialble at - www.domainname.com/ So it is only going to host one main app and that needs to be displayed when we open www.domainname.com/ on browser. I have already tried couple of things like below - RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/(Context/.*)$ RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ /Context/$1 [P,L] OR redirect permanent /MyApp/ abcd://domainname.com OR Using JKMount - JkMount /MyApp/* ajp13 JkMount /MyApp* ajp13 OR Deploy war file to ROOT of tomcat and make relevant chagnes in web and server.xml All of these aren't working and I keep getting a intenal error.   • Java @Contented annotation to help reduce false sharing

    See this posting by Aleksey Shipilev for details -- @Contended is something we've wanted for a long time. The JVM provides automatic layout and placement of fields. Usually it'll (a) sort fields by descending size to improve footprint, and (b) pack reference fields so the garbage collector can process a contiguous run of reference fields when tracing. @Contended gives the program a way to provide more explicit guidance with respect to concurrency and false sharing. Using this facility we can sequester hot frequently written shared fields away from other mostly read-only or cold fields. The simple rule is that read-sharing is cheap, and write-sharing is very expensive. We can also pack fields together that tend to be written together by the same thread at about the same time. More generally, we're trying to influence relative field placement to minimize coherency misses. Fields that are accessed closely together in time should be placed proximally in space to promote cache locality. That is, temporal locality should condition spatial locality. Fields accessed together in time should be nearby in space. That having been said, we have to be careful to avoid false sharing and excessive invalidation from coherence traffic. As such, we try to cluster or otherwise sequester fields that tend to written at approximately the same time by the same thread onto the same cache line. Note that there's a tension at play: if we try too hard to minimize single-threaded capacity misses then we can end up with excessive coherency misses running in a parallel environment. Theres no single optimal layout for both single-thread and multithreaded environments. And the ideal layout problem itself is NP-hard. Ideally, a JVM would employ hardware monitoring facilities to detect sharing behavior and change the layout on the fly. That's a bit difficult as we don't yet have the right plumbing to provide efficient and expedient information to the JVM. Hint: we need to disintermediate the OS and hypervisor. Another challenge is that raw field offsets are used in the unsafe facility, so we'd need to address that issue, possibly with an extra level of indirection. Finally, I'd like to be able to pack final fields together as well, as those are known to be read-only.

  • help with migrating from Widows, x64 FGLRX, CPU load, Java and Minecraft

    Im new to ubuntu, it is the second time i have installed it. This comp is Dell studio 1558. some specs: CPU- intel core i7 Q720 1.6GHz, GPU- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 FGLRX- i've fallowed these instructions among inspecting many others, i have tried all of the variants mentioned in that tread before reverting back to the drivers supplied with Ubuntu ( through additional drivers ) which apparently seem to work best. i am testing them with minecraft as silly as it may sound. in 2 to 60 minutes the FPS drop from 70+ to somewhere between 0 and 5. while "fgl_glxgears" runs at between 400 and 800 FPS smoothly.. I am using oracle ( sun ) JRE6 to run minecraft, i have gotten it through a tutorial linked on oracle's website, i currently have no other version of java installed ( was worse when i had a few others here ). after closing the game Ubuntu is similarly slow, i've checked the CPU load using System Monitor and it shows one of the CPU's jumping to 80%~100% load at a time.. a reboot solves it. i realize my mess is up to me to solve but a hand is always appreciated. tyvm in advance.

  • Design help with parallel process

    I am re-factoring some code and an having an issue with retrieving data from two parallel processes. I have an application that sends packets back and forth via different mediums (ex: RS232, TCP/IP, etc). The jist if of this question is that there are two parallel processes going on. I hope the picture below displays what is going on better than I can word it: SetupRS232() class creates a new instance of the SerialPort by: SerialPort serialPort = new SerialPort(); My question is, what is the best way that the Communicator() class, which sends out the packet via the respective medium, get access to the SerialPort object from the SetupRS232 class? I can do it with a Singleton but have heard that they are generally not the best design to go by. I am trying to follow SRP but I do feel like I am doing something wrong here. Communicator() will need to go out of it's way to get access to SetupRS232() to get access to the SerialPort class. I actually haven't found a way to even get access to it. Would designing each medium class, for example, SetupRS232(), SetupTCPIP, as a singleton be the best way to approach this problem?

  • Ubuntu 12.10 will not boot!! please help

    Okay ive been at this for about 6 hours now, linux has never given me problems before, im installing from an isodvd going from window7 to ubuntu12.10, the installation works fine, everything loads perfect with no problems and it asks me to restart when the installation is comeplete. After the computer shuts down and i remove the livecd as it tried to boot up i get an Error: no boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed. Ive tried updating grub from the livecd because it is the only way i can boot to anything atm, nothing has worked so far. Has anyone else had this problem??
