• Dell Dimension running Fedora12 does a "Sleeping Beauty" and I am not a "handsome prince"!

  Dell Dimension 2350 with a Pentium IV processor and integrated video and network chips running Fedora12 does a "Sleeping Beauty" and I, apparently, am not am not a "handsome prince"! The system puts video and network to sleep and it will not wakeup. I have heard of this problem on laptops, but this is a tower. Any ideas or help is appreciated. I tried to ping the network card from another system and ping fails. The logs indicate that the system continues to be active. Pressing keyboard short-cut keys makes the disk light blink but neither the video or network card comes alive. Failing all else, are there any Linux commands that I could schedule in cron to pulse video and network adapters hourly that will keep them awake? Or, should I wait on Fedora13? Before this machine, I built a Dimension 2400 with Pentium IV and it had the same problem. Fedora9 on the same hardware is fine.

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated?   I recently bought an HP laptop (dv7-3085dx) (http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/hp-pavilion-dv7-3085dx/4505-3121_7-33776108.html) which is supposed to have a pretty good video card (NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M). The card is supposed to output a max resolution of 2560x1600 which is also the max resolution of my monitor (http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2006/02/dell_3007wfp_on_dell_2001fp_action_8_megapixel_desktop.html). Now I bought an HDMI to dual link dvi (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002KKLYDK/ref=oss_product) cable...this is after Best Buy's 70 dollar hdmi to dvi (perhaps it was 'single' link?) didn't give me the best resolution. In windows 7, when I try to set the max resolution for my 30 in monitor, I only get 1280x800...which is absurd. The monitor is great, I love the laptop and the video card supposedly supports such resolutions. So I can't figure out why I'm not getting better resolution (by the way, when i "detect" my monitor in windows 7, it is shown correctly as DELL 3007WFP!).

• Looking for a laptop with a removable hard drive

  At the moment, I possess a Dell Inspiron 6400. Just removing two screws, I've made the drive removable (look here) and I can pull it off in one second. The new Inspiron and Studio laptops don't support this anymore (the drive is no more on the side but on the back of the laptop). So I’m looking for a new laptop having this kind of feature, or one that can be modded easily. I also need a : Screen = 15" (if possible resolution 1366 x 768 resolution) Core i5-520M Midrange GPU (like an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650) Decent battery life minimum fan noise Thanks.

  Hi, I have a Microsoft Small Business Server. I have pointed an external domain name to the external fixed IP address for the server. In routing and remote access I have defined a service for our subversion server as follows: Incoming port: 8443 Private address: 192.168.10.5 Outgoing port: 8443 192.168.10.5 is our development server, not the SBS (which is at 192.168.10.1) This rule works correctly if I am not on our internal network. However if I am on the internal network this rule does not get applied. What can I do/set so this rule is applied both internally and externally (so users with laptops et, don't keep having to change the URL by which they access the subversion server) Not sure what other info you may need, so please let me know if more details are required. • Uninstall or Disable Dell Wave

  The image we put on our company laptops includes the Dell Wave interface for Biometric log in. The Wave UI increases boot time by about 5 minutes (because it loads the fingerprint database(a feature I don't use)), so I'm trying to uninstall it, but with little success. There is no line-item in the Add/Remove Programs menu to formally delete it, nor is there a Service I can stop/remove to disable the Wave UI. I've tried looking online, but all I find instead are hits for Google Wave and virus-removal forums with HyjackThis dumps that include Dell Wave records. Any ideas? Edit: Removal isn't entirely necessary. Disabling the Wave UI is good enough.

• Does a portable secondary laptop LCD monitor exist?

  I'm looking to buy a portable secondary LCD monitor for my Macbook Pro, does anything like that exist? I found some laptops that provide a dual 15'' monitor solution (but it's already baked into the hardware). Also some ideas posted about creating this type of setup back in 2007. I'm looking for something that is as thin as a laptop LCD (with maybe a bulky power supply that I could easily daisy chain or plug into a power strip along with my laptop). How difficult would it be to buy a 17'' laptop screen and hook up a DVI connector and power supply, and build a simple monitor stand for it? I've gotten to used to a dual-monitor setup at work and at home with my laptop that having to use my laptop in single-screen mode makes me feel crippled.

  I have set of two lenova laptops in which Fedora core 13 is installed. In one machine, the monitor is detected properly such that It is possible to connect another monitor. But In another laptop, monitor is shown as unknown monitor. I tried to fix it by reinstalling xorg-x11-drv-intel.i686. But the problem remains same(unknown monitor). it is not possible to connect another monitor with this setting. Laptop model: G460. Graphics card: Intel Graphics Media accelerator HD. Thanks!

• How long will the serial port be around for?

  It seems that the serial port has a remarkable ability to stick around. You might call it the hardware equivalent of Windows XP. Despite pretty much physically disappearing from laptops and the like, the need to use a serial port still exists, even if it means using a converter of some sort. It is very much a legacy piece of hardware, and yet so many devices and instruments still use it. I use it myself daily in my work with PLC's, HMI's, barcode readers, etc. In my opinion, I don't think it is going anywhere soon, but how long do you think it has got before joining the museum? Do you think it ever will?

• Windows7 access to Printer shared with XP ?

  I have, at home, an eeebox running with XP 24/24 with an attached printer (Canon IP5300) installed as shared. We have a few other laptops and PC, all with vista, that can access and print on the shared printer without problem. We just received a new Dell computer with Windows7-64 on it, but it fails to connect the shared printer. I tried connecting the printer with its USB cord directly to the Windows7 PC and the required driver was automatically downloaded and installed. I could then access the printer specific properties, etc. But if I connect it back to the XP computer, the windows7 PC still refused to connect to the remote printer although it now have the drivers. The windows7 is a family pack. By the way, I also have an old canon scanner still perfectly working with XP, but for which I can't find compatible drivers for windows 7. Do I have to buy a new one ? Any help would be welcome.

We can use wireshark or other programs to sniff all the packets. By grouping all the secondary connections with the primary one, then we would be able to get a much easier picture of user's primary activities. Is this talking about being able to recognize which websites each of the laptops are connecting to?

• Reliable Backup Solution for Linux for Complete System Restoration

  What's the best backup solution for Linux that can completely restore the entire filesystem to a blank harddrive (including partitioning) after an old harddrive dies? I'm currently running a few Ubuntu machines, some with RAID-1 and others without RAID (mostly laptops). I'd like to implement a backup solution that can take incremental snapshots of the entire filesystem, so that if I were to replace all the harddrives in a machine, I could use the backup to restore a perfect copy of the previous filesystem. Unfortunately, nearly all the backup solutions I've found seem to be glorified rsync scripts, which only backup some files, and have no easy way to restore once the entire filesystem is gone. Some of the more complicated solutions, like Bacula, might do what I need, but require a complicated server/client setup and are notoriously difficult to maintain. I've heard that Apple's TimeMachine utility has this ability, and I've had similar success taking differential disk images with Acronis True Image on Windows, but of course neither of these work on Linux. Is there anything comparable for Ubuntu?

• Access points fighting for dominance?

  We have a small office with a large number of wireless devices (a mixture of desktop machines, laptops, and wifi-enabled phones) all working from a single Apple Airport Extreme which extends our wired network. I've added another Airport Extreme for resiliency, since we've been seeing a decrease in performance and (as far as I understand) access points can only handle a small number of clients. I set the new AP to extend the current network so that the clients weren't constantly switching between different wireless networks, however as soon as this AP was configured all the wireless devices started seeing network trouble, flicking on and off. I'm assuming that this is because both APs are reasonably strong, and the client can't decide which to use. What is the best route to follow to resolve this? What I'm aiming for is wireless resiliency; preferably having two APs share the network load, or if this isn't an option then having a primary AP with a "fail-over", should the primary go down for any reason.

Idea We thought we could split the costs of the Mac Pro and set it up to act as both a web server and a backup device. Question Is this a good idea? Specifically: Is it easy to set it up to incrementally backup one or several laptops over wifi? And what software would you recommend? Is it silent and stable enough to run a web server continuously? • How can I use 2 monitors plus laptop with my Dell e6420 w/ Nvidia nvs 4200m

  I have just hooked up a 2nd external monitor to my Dell e6420 laptop with a Nvidia NVS 4200m graphics card, running Windows 8 64 bit. However, the computer won't let me have both monitors and the laptop display active at the same time. I installed the latest Nvidia graphics drivers (310.70) but it claims that my GPU can only support up to 2 monitors. Nivdia's website implies differently (as does various other laptops around the office). The monitors are connected both via DVI to my dell docking station that has multiple DVI ports. Both monitors are working correctly, I just can't get all 3 working together. Attempting to download the driver from dell fails, as their driver installer is broken apparently Any ideas?

• In general, do 3rd-party laptop AC adapters / chargers work reliably?

  The AC adapters for my 2 dell laptops wore out very quickly. One supplies power but won't charge the battery (it's about 3 years old, the other is a bit newer). Both have worn through to the shielding around the notebook connector and look like they'll be unusable soon. Checking user reviews of the replacement adapter on Dell's own website, it appears they usually fail this fast. Apparently Dell does this deliberately to make money (their adapters sell for about 10-15 times what they cost to make). Same with replacement batteries. I can see there are plenty of much cheaper ($50 less) compatible AC adapters on eBay. Does anyone have experience with these? Naturally I'm nervous a crappy knock-off could fry my notebook, but has this ever actually happened to anyone recently? Has anyone had a good experience? Can anyone recommend a good online seller (who doesn't charge nonsensical shipping costs to Australia, preferably?)

• My internet drops and will only reconnect if I troubleshoot it or restart my computer.

  My internet loses its connection and at the same time, and my speaker seems broken if that happens and my mouse will not be smooth as it was before it happens. It already happened before and I didnt mind it. But now, it's happening literally all the time. After startup, my connection seems okay but after some few minutes, even without me doing something, my laptop will just lose its connection. It says that it is not connected and connections are available, but if I check if there are connections where I can connect it shows nothing. Even if, there is actually a wi-fi connection where my phone and other laptops connect. They dont seem to have problem with it. Just my laptop. After that happens, I usually restart my laptop but I discovered that troubleshooting it would somehow repair the problem, but not all the time. It says that restarting my wireless adapter do the job. Are there any long term fix? I mean that could last long or totally erase the problem? I have Atheros AR5B97 Wireless Network Adapter and Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, both enabled. On the services, I have Wired AutoConfig and WLAN AutoConfig on Automatic. • Is it safe to run an operating system from an USB flash drive?

  I've got a laptop that has a broken harddisk controller. Replacing the motherboard is quite expensive. I thought about buying a flash drive and installing & running the system from it. However, I'm concerned about some things. Speed: Are they fast enough for swap memory (I've got only 1GB RAM installed.) I'm considering buying 2 or 3 of them and making them into a RAID. What about limited write cycles? How long will it last for a system that has a filesystem with journaling enabled? I'd hate to abandon it. Are there significant differences between internal SSD which are used in modern laptops like MacBooks and USB flash drives? What should I expect in 10 years when the memory wear starts kicking in?

• Second display freaks out when waking from sleep

  I have two laptops, an older white MacBook and a brand new Macbook Pro. When either computer is on my desk, I connect it to a second, widescreen display (Acer, a couple years old, uses DVI). The Macbook connects via mini DVI and the MBP connects via mini displayport. When the Macbook is connected and everything goes to sleep, I'm able to wake the machine and both displays in the normal way and everything is fine. Sometimes, when waking the MBP, the laptop and primary display are fine, but the second display shows a bunch of static. If I restart the display, everything's fine. This probably happens 70% of the time when the MBP goes to sleep while connected to this display. Any idea what could be causing this?

• Laptop connects to other network but not to my home wireless

  My home network's wireless SSID is say "XYZ" I also have an ethernet wire from the same router. I have two laptops A and B Earlier both A and B were able to connect to my home internet through the ethernet and wireless. Suddenly, the laptop B can no longer connect to XYZ or through ethernet. When I do plug the wire, i get the connection icon all green but when I try to access any web page it errors out (page not found) But strangely laptop B connects to my neighbours wireless SSID "ABC". I have also tested laptop B with other networks and it connects fine. Laptop A and many other devices still connect fine with my home wireless "XYZ" Strange thing is when my laptop B connects wireless through XYz, it gets the IP address but then none of the browsers (chrome,firefox, IE) can show any web pages. What settings should I be checking on laptop B that is preventing it to connect to my home internet. Thank you

  I am trying to build a computer, placing an ASUS P8H67-I DELUXE in a custom retro C64 case. The case is an extra small form factor which can accomodate the Mini ITX board, but requires an external power supply, similar to the power-bricks that laptops use. I am looking at different power supplies and like these, but cannot figure out whether/how to power this system because they provide a 24-pin connector, but the motherboard has a 4-pin connector as well. Is the 4-pin connector optional or is it required? If it is required, how can I provide power for this system?

• What kind of SATA interface is on a Thinkpad X120E?

  I recently ordered a Thinkpad X120E with an AMD Fusion (Zacate) chipset. I am eyeballing an SSD for it, however newer SSDs are coming out with 6Gbps SATA interfaces. I doubt such a cheap laptop has 6Gbps SATA, but I'm debating waiting the a bit longer until the Intel 510 series come out, if anything to future proof myself by putting it in this laptop and then later on when I do upgrade to a laptop with 6Gbps SATA I'll be good to go. The hardware manual mentions that the motherboard is for a "AMD Fusion E-350" but the specifications of each hardware part isn't part of the manual. Does anyone have any information on the kind of SATA controllers in Fusion laptops so I can make a better purchasing decision?

• Can you plug-in the battery while laptop is on AC only?

  Hello, I'm using my laptop at home with battery removed and only connected to the AC power. However I'm lacking the mobility as my power cord is kinda short. Is it safe from electrical point of view to plug in the battery while the laptop is connected to AC and disconnect the AC power afterwards? What about the opposite side of the question - is it safe (or what the damage could be) if you work on battery, plug in the AC and unplug the battery? If there are differents for different models of laptops, I'm asking about IBM Lenovo T60. Is there such thing as a 'hot-plug battery'?
