  • Installing Windows 7 destroyed my dual boot setup

    I have a laptop on which I have two drives with separate Windows XP installs, one barebones for music production, the other "normal" Windows XP with Office etc. (unfortunately the bios won't give a boot disk choice). Normally I would be presented with two Windows XPs on booting. Selecting the second one would get me into the "normal" installation on disk 1 (C:). Selecting the first in boot order would give me D:\ (disk 2) with the barebones XP. However, I installed Windows 7 Home onto disk 1 (C:), but there were no dual boot options anymore, even though I installed DualBoot Pro and added Windows XP disk D:. The options now show up, but selecting Windows XP just turns into a reboot back to where I started.

  • 802.11N Windows XP Clients Unable to See Each Other

    I am attempting to update my wireless network from 802.11g to 802.11n. When connected to the 'G' access point, the client laptops (there are 7 running Windows XP) are able to connect and browse the network for each other. When I connect them to the 'N' access point they can see the access point, but not the rest of the network. I tried swapping out the access point with a wireless router, but this did not change anything. I verified in both the AP and the router that isolation was turned off. Searching the web has not turned up any other ideas. The manuals don't show anything either. Why can't my wireless client nodes see each other on the 'N' network?

  • No option for keeping installed programs when upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8

    (Related : How can I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and keep my files and applications? ) I'm trying to upgrade my Windows 7 Pro (msdnaa) to Windows 8 Pro (msdnaa). The Windows 8 is the final version (I don't have access to previews on msdnaa anymore). As you can see on the related question accepted answer, Windows 8 should give an option to keep installed programs. But it does not. The only available options are "Keep only personal datas" and "Nothing". Any idea ? I'm running with SP1. I've got two partitions (one of them only contains data of a virtual machine).     Hi I was trying to install Windows XP in a Samsung SENS 145 plus Notebook. It does not have a cd drive and I already managed to format it and semi install Windows XP, so now it does not even boot up either. This is what I did: Since it supports USB booting, I first made a bootable USB of Windows XP (Korean version; SP2 I think, may be SP 3) using Novicorp WinToFlash enter link description here. It managed to boot up at first and I was able to format the C driveand get Windows install to start up. It took forever to copy all the files from the USB and after the first reboot, before installation started, I cancelled the reboot from windows install, went to BIOS and changed the boot device priority from USB to internal hard drive. But now on bootup it showed me a list with two options for booting windows XP (much like in the case of a multi OS system) so I assumed that I had formatted drive D by mistake and installed XP there, instead of on C drive. Anyway, I chose one of them and it continued my Windows installation. I got the blue installation screen that shows ads about Windows XP on the right frame and estimated remaining time on the left. However, after completing the process, after the first reboot, instead of showing the Windows XP logo, it says \system32\hall.dll is missing (or corrupted I'm not sure, I needed to install the Korean version of windows and I could not exactly read the error message, however it was one that I have already seen in an English version installation, and I am sure it says either missing or corrupted). The problem is, now it shows the same error again when I try to reboot it from the USB drive as well. I tried to boot a portable version of Linux I made in another USB, but the computer does not boot up from that USB, and it shows hal.dll error when I try to boot it using the WIN XP installation USB I made, as well as when I try to boot it from the hard drive, where I suppose Win XP is now semiinstalled. So now I can't get the computer to start up at all, except going to the BIOS. What else can I try to solve this? Also, would it be possible to install XP on this computer by connecting it to another one running Windows 7 ultimate, through the ethernet card? That is, network just the two computers together, then install windows XP on the notebook from the desktop running windows 7? Please help, I'm running out of ideas on this one. If Korean version of windows XP is the problem then I am willing to install English version as well. (but I need to make sure if that is the real cause of the problem)

    As we have some PC's still running Windows 2000 and this is beyond our control we use IE 6 so we can keep the IE platform standard. Recently on some XP and Win2000 PCs IE has been crashing with the Encountered a Problem and Needs to close do you want to send a message to Microsoft error when entering some sites. This happens even after a format reinstall with minimal software load (Office 2000, some avaya software, kaspersky, tapiex.dll). The module pointed to in the error report is ntl.dll. There are lots of reports over the net of the problem but has anyone resolved this issue? (Latest IE6 updates are installed). Also please note there were no 3rd party IE addons, spyware, viruses or adware Hope someone can help.

    hi, I have four drives on my computer. The problem is that each time i start a computer the scan disk check runs for a drive even if i shut down my computer properly. I ran the thorough scandisk check but still for that drive, the scandisk check is always performed no matter what.   • Decrypting Windows XP encrypted files from an old disk

    I had an old Windows XP machine with an encrypted directory. When moving to a new Win7 machine I connected the old disk as a slave in the new machine, and hence cannot access the encrypted files. Chances don't seem good as documentation warns you: "Do not Delete or Rename a User's account from which will want to Recover the Encrypted Files. You will not be able to de-crypt the files using the steps outlined above." On the other hand, I have full access to the machine, so maybe there's a utility which can extract the keys and use the to decrypt the files... BTW, I didn't have a password in the old machine, if it's relevant. Ideas, anyone? Thanks!

  • Am I obligated to install Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications to receive all Microsoft updates?

    Do I have to install WGA Notifications to receive all Microsoft updates? I currently don't have it on my hard drive, and I get a notification from Microsoft Update urging me to validate my copy of Windows XP. If I don't validate my copy, I don't get all updates. When I click the link however, I get an ActiveX error message. (Yes, I'm doing this in IE8.) Could this have something to do with my decision not to install WGA Notifications?

    Hi all. I have Win 7 (x64) at home and I want to play some old games (specifically Lands of Lore 3, but also some others). This game does not work properly on Win 7, and there are no patches that I'm aware of to fix its issues. Can I use XP Mode to play this game (and other non Win 7 nice games), or is there a better way? I only have one PC and dual booting scares me... (so no to dual booting!) Another question: Will I have full hardware support (full use of my graphics card, etc) when I use DOSbox or a VM? I have decided to go with VirtualBox or vmware, I'll check which one gives the best performance, thanks for your input!

I read up something on internet about this issue but all the articles are just way too complex and big + they are all different so don't know which one to try. I want to know if someone has tried something like this and to tell me what's the best and easiest way, like some tool that will automatically write the iso file onto the flash drive and make it bootable or smth.   • Windows XP, USB-Stick and multiple Partitions

    Hello. I've got an USB-Stick with multiple Partitions on it (FAT32 (active), FAT32, Ext2 <-- that's another story) and it seems like that my Windows XP can only mount the first partition of the stick. If I try to mount the second one using the volume manager it tells me that I need to make it active and reboot...is it really that limited or am I just missing something here? Partitions: FAT32, System Rescue CD, bootable and active FAT32, some tools ext2, some data (I know that I need extra drivers etc., but that's not asked here. Edit (Solution): Thanks to the answer with the RMB (ReMoveable Bit) I was able to dig up a solution described at this site (Section: On flash drive only the first partition works). Basically, there's an Hitachi Driver available which filters the RMB on Driver-Level, which just needs to be a little modified to function with basically every USB-Stick. All you need to do is adding the "Device Instance ID" to the driver and then use this driver.

    When I create a scheduled task, I do so via command line: schtasks.exe /Create /TN "startup-script" /TR "C:\startup.bat" /RU taskuser /RP taskpasswd /SC ONLOGON The idea is that this task run forever. The batch opens a java process that is never meant to end. I've used ONLOGON, as the machine auto-logs in as taskuser. All this works fine, for about 72 hours, after which the Duration flag kicks in and ends the process. Windows XP doesn't have the /DU flag on command line - is there an alternative method to creating a task that is meant to run from a system startup (doesn't even require logon) and runs forever, without touching a GUI?

    I know that there are so many posts on this subject but none of them worked for me. I have Ubuntu on my machine and I would like to install windows xp. As my cd/dvd reader does not work, I made a bootable usb from iso image using UNETBOOTIN, but when I try to boot in through USB it says "BOOTMGR is Missing". I have searched a lot but could not find any solution to it. Please note that my hard disk uses ext4 format and my bootable drive uses NTFS. I have set the Boot Sequence as USB Drive in BIOS. Please let me know if you need any additional information to fix this. Thanks

    Ok so i used xp for years before i was able to get my hands on the Windows7 RC which i bought a new HDD for, and then followed the process to dual-boot. About a month ago xp started acting funny and i thought the disk might be dying. So i started using Windows7 all the time. Today i start the computer and it cant find the disk which xp was on anymore. I guess its dead. So i remove the xp HD and my computer cant start...insert bootable disk or something similar So how can i remove the primary(dead) xp disk and boot straight to Windows 7?

    I want to differrntiate between Windows XP and Windows 7 in a XML file. Thought i will use an environment variable for it inside the XML. However I could not find any system environment variable defined in windows that gives this information. I see the %OSTYPE% variable but it is only available in Windows 7. It is not defined in XP. Is there anyway i could do this? Note that i would like a solution which purely depends on system environment variables. I do not want to create new variables based on executing some command, because i want to use this variable in a XML file.

    My work PC has restrictions that stop me from adding programs to the start menu so when I try to install Python using the Python 2.6.5 Windows installer it can't complete as it tries to add a shortcut to my start menu. Is there a way around this? I.e another way of installing without the need for a shortcut? I've tried Python portable but as it doesn't add anything to the registry it can't be detected.

    Sometimes you might want to leave a text message for a user before they log into a Windows 7 computer. Today we show you a neat trick that allows you to leave a message they can read before logging in. Add a Text Message To add a message, click on Start and enter regedit into the Search box and hit Enter. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\System and double-click on legalnoticecaption. In the Value data field enter in the header you want…for instance your company name or the name of your computer…whatever you want it to be, then click OK. I am like a month and a half old linux newbie so I have no idea the commands I could use for this, and I don't have a memory card in the phone to mount.

  • Put one monitor of a dual monitor windows system into standby

    Standby not Disabled! When running 2 monitors on windows 7 or Windows XP, I would like to be able to put one of the monitors at a time into standby. The method can be manual. When running 2 monitors , the second monitor is not always needed, shutting off the monitors own power switch will turn off the monitor, that does work Ok. Problems with that are , the delay with the monitor logo at turn on, and the power switch is not very accessable, and the switch might not live forever turning it on and off so many times. Using disable methods like devcon, WIN-P and Display, causes all the windows to properly move to the other monitor. While that is what a person would want to happen so they can get hold of the windows, that is not what I want to happen, and some things on the other monitor have to be re-arranged after a re-enable. By putting it into standby mode, nothing changes other than the monitor going into standby. Disconnecting the DVI cable still can cause the system to (properly) shift all the windows over to the one monitor, just like any of the disable methods do. That makes a mess of the windows, and is so unacceptable, that I would prefer to leave the monitor on, wasting power and the hardware, when it could easily go into standby for some time. For both monitors I am using a "MonitorOff" program that puts both monitors into standby, but I can not find a utility that will put only ONE monitor into standby for the windows system. If someone comes along and suggests "ultramon" you must know for a fact that it will put One of either of the monitors into actual standby. And it does not really suit me to use ultramon, I tested it (it was nice) and I did not feel that it was a program I wanted. The 2 monitors are running off of an ATI 4890 card, they are both hooked up DVI-I, the OS is both Windows 7 (primary) and Windows XP. In addition it would also be interesting to have seperate standby activity timers, and follow mouse kind of standby changes, but any manuel method , shortcut, batch , tray, or gadget kind of operation would be a good start.
