• Rotating object along bezier curve: not rotating enough?

  I tried to follow the instructions from the threads on the forum (Cocos2d rotating sprite while moving with CCBezierBy) with Unity, in order to rotate my object as it moves along a bezier curve. But it does not rotate enough, the angle is too low, it goes up to 6 instead of 90 for example, as you can see on this image (the y eulerAngle is at 6, I would expect it to be around 90 with this curve) : Would you know why it does this? And how to make the rotation toward the next point? • UTF-8 encoding problem with flash mysql and php

  Hi, As you may know, I am programming an on-line game using FLASH. I am connecting my FLASH 8 movie with MySQL database through PHP. I am doing very good in that, and I have everything working fine. The problems come when I am trying to insert (Using the INSERT SQL func) data to the database that are non-english. In other words, UTF-8 data. I red a lot of articls about that stuff and found and apply the fallowing: 1. In PHP4, you need to tell the PHP to use UTF-8 when using the xml_parser_crater() func, however, in PHP5 that is done automatically. Even though I told PHP5 to use the UTF-8 when calling the func. Adding the header to the XML sent to PHP from flash. Force the FLASH to use UTF-8 encoding in the preference options. Set the encoding in MySQL to UTF-8 (utf8_unicode_ci with InnoDB engine). I can read and insert the other language data correctly in the phpadmin as well. I did all that in my coding, and still I can't insert such data. one more strange thing is that, when I use the same link, that the FLASH using, with the XML, that the FLASH creating, on the browser (google chrome), I got the data inserted right in the database!!!!! I am about to get crazy about that stuff, What am I missing? what cause the problem? Thank you in advance.

• Partitioning During Installation, Reinstalling Ubuntu, Backup donwloaded Repositories

  I am new to Ubuntu and I have just finished installing 13.10 amd64 on my PC. This will replace my Windows 7 as my only OS. I just want to clarify some issues that've been bugging me. I tried reading posts with the same topics but I just can't wrap my head to it yet. I partitioned my 80GB drive into: /root: 30GB (sorry for the confusion, I actually meant /) /home: 40GB /var : 3GB swap : 4GB (2GB of mem) Please correct me if I'm wrong about these: All of the users' documents are saved in their respective folders in /home. But say I want to clean install (format) Ubuntu, I don't need to make backups of /home and /var as they are on separate partitions. But when re-installing, do I just choose /root and format and it will recognize all the partitions (not making another /home and /var inside /root)? Downloaded packages (from all the repositories) and all their dependencies are saved in /var. So after re-installing on the same PC (assuming I'm offline), it will just use the latest updates in /var if I choose to update? And if all the installed apps and their dependents are all in there, all I need to do is re-install them without encountering errors? I have also read that you can back them up using aptoncd and then adding the DVD to the sources. So if I download all the high ranking apps using Synaptic, could I then have an all-in-one DVD installer? 30GB for / is excessive because the bulk of files will either be in /home (personal, downloads, music, videos) or /var (updates, packages, installed apps)? Please excuse me for asking such a question but I really want to explore and learn more.

• Documentation often ommits to specify which flavour of regular expression to use, so is there a default flavour that we should all be familiar with?

  Often I come across documentation that says "use a regular expression here" I have to spend quite some time digging around trying to work out which regular expression format they are expecting. As far as I can tell, there are many types of regular expression. But, at my last place of work I was made to feel stupid when I suggested adding some text to our User Documentation to specify the type of regular expression to be used. When someone says "a regular expression" what is the regular expression syntax most people expect and where is it documented? Update: I was prompted to single-out some examples - but no disrespect to these great projects: eregi docs page is not particularly helpful in explaining expected syntax. Nor can I easily work out the syntax expected here if i just land on the page from a search. No explicit mention of the regular expression pattern expected by PatternExpectation() on the SimpleTest page. etc. etc. here is a highly voted SO answer that seems to assume there is only one flavour of regular expressions.

• Make Network Manager use bridge for PPPoE instead of only working on ethernet?

  My ISP uses PPPoE on their DSL connections. I use Network Manager to connect to this using a bridged modem connected to eth0. Often, I want to test networking things, so a set myself up a KVM machine with a tap interface. I can then connect these interfaces to to virtual 'switches' by adding them to bridges. (I work for my ISP). Sometimes, I want to test cases where the PPPoE is connected more than once. For this, I would like to be able to add eth0 to my 'switch' (a bridge) so the VMs can have a 'bridged modem' connection to the internet. But I would like to still be able to run the PPPoE for my computer at the same time. Which means that I need to get network-manager to run PPPoE over the bridge (or eth0). The problem is that it considers eth0 (and the bridge) 'not managed' by network manager, so it refuses to use it. So, how can I have network manager dial PPPoE over a bridge?

• Integration of routes that are not resources in an MVC REST style application

  I would like to keep my application relatively REST-pure for the sake of consistency, but I'm struggling philosophically with the relatively few views (maybe just one) that I'll need to build that don't relate to resources directly, and therefore do not fit into a REST style. As an example, take the home page. Ruby on rails seems to bail on their otherwise RESTful approach for this very basic need of all web sites. The home page appears special: You can get it, but a get at the resource level is supposed to give you a collection of elements. I can imagine this being the list of routes maybe, but that seems a stretch, and doesn't address anything else. Getting the home page by id doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense - what's the element of a home collection? Again, maybe routes, but a get on a route would do what? Redirect? This feels odd. You can't delete it (arguably you could allow this for administrators) Adding a second one doesn't make sense except possibly if the elements were routes Updating it might make sense for administrators, but AFAIK REST doesn't describe updates on the resource directly, only elements of the resource (this article explicitly says "UNUSED" for PUTS on the resource) Is the "right" thing to do just to special case these types of things? At the end of the day, I can wrap my head around most of applications being gathered around resources...I can't think of another good example other than a home page, but since that's the start of an application, I think it warrants some thought.

• jQuery + Perl CGI to vb.net transition

  I've been developing oracle database-heavy "web applications" forever by building my html by hand, adding some jquery to handle ajax requests (html inserts for forms processing etc), and always did my server side stuff in perl cgi. I really love how easy it is to read some form input, execute some select statements through dbi (SO EASY), and generate HTML to be inserted by the jquery request. That's a web application to me. However, my new boss builds everything in visual studio 2010, vb.net, usually webforms. So, for work reasons, I now need to start developing in vb.net so it can be collectively maintained, and I'm just seeking advice on where to start learning/how to approach this. I know I could at least learn ASP.net and VB.net, and create a webform, have it read parameters, return HTML, etc. which would allow me to use my previously written HTML and client-side scripts (jQuery). Although- since we're moving heavily to mobile applications I really need to reduce client-side processing load. Is there any advantage to my boss' method? Thanks a ton.

• Duplicating someone's content legitimately & writing HTML to support that

  I want to add content from other blogs to my own (with the authors permission) to help build additional relevant content and support articles I've found useful that others have written. I'm looking into how to do this responsibly - ie, by giving the original content author a boost and not competing against them for search traffic which should go to their site. Also, have I overlooked anything in the approach?

• Smart defaults [SSDT]

  I’ve just discovered a new, somewhat hidden, feature in SSDT that I didn’t know about and figured it would be worth highlighting here because I’ll bet not many others know it either; the feature is called Smart Defaults. It gets around the problem of adding a NOT NULLable column to an existing table that has got data in it – previous to SSDT you would need to define a DEFAULT constraint however it does feel rather cumbersome to create an object purely for the purpose of pushing through a deployment – that’s the situation that Smart Defaults is meant to alleviate. The Smart Defaults option exists in the advanced section of a Publish Profile file: The description of the setting is “Automatically provides a default value when updating a table that contains data with a column that does not allow null values”, in other words checking that option will cause SSDT to insert an arbitrary default value into your newly created NON NULLable column. In case you’re wondering how it does it, here’s how: SSDT creates a DEFAULT CONSTRAINT at the same time as the column is created and then immediately removes that constraint: ALTER TABLE [dbo].[T1]    ADD [C1] INT NOT NULL,         CONSTRAINT [SD_T1_1df7a5f76cf44bb593506d05ff9a1e2b] DEFAULT 0 FOR [C1];ALTER TABLE [dbo].[T1] DROP CONSTRAINT [SD_T1_1df7a5f76cf44bb593506d05ff9a1e2b]; You can then update the value as appropriate in a Post-Deployment script. Pretty cool! On the downside, you can only specify this option for the whole project, not for an individual table or even an individual column – I’m not sure that I’d want to turn this on for an entire project as it could hide problems that a failed deployment would highlight, in other words smart defaults could be seen to be “papering over the cracks”. In fact,  we build these pages incrementally testing our web parts, etc. I am saying that the final action in our solution is that we take all these artifacts and add them to the site pages in code, the client then only needs to activate a few features and VIOLA their site appears!.  I had a project that had me build 8 pages like this as part of the solution.   In this blog post, I am taking a master page solution that I have called DJGreenMaster.  On My Office 365 Development Site it looks like this:     It is a generic master page for a SharePoint 2010 site Along with a three column layout.  Centered with a footer that uses a SharePoint List and Web Part for the footer links.  I use this master page a lot in my site development!  Easy to change the color and site logo with a little CSS.   I am going to add a few web parts for discussion purposes and then add these web parts to a site page in code.    Lets look at the solution package for DJ Green Master as that will be the basis project for building the site pages:   What you are seeing  is a complete solution to add a Master Page to a site collection which contains: 1.  Master Page Module which contains the Master Page and Page Layout 2.  The Footer Module to add the Footer Web Part 3.  Miscellaneous modules to add images, JQuery, CSS and subsite page 4.  3 features and two feature event receivers: a.  DJGreenCSS, used to add the master page CSS file to Style Sheet Library and an Event Receiver to check it in. b.  DJGreenMaster used to add the Master Page and Page Layout.  In an Event Receiver change the master page to DJGreenMaster , create the footer list and check the files in. c.  DJGreenMasterWebParts add the Footer Web Part to the site collection. I won’t go over the code for this as I will give it to you at the end of this blog post. We the called the Publishing Page update method. 5.  Lastly, the Create Publishing Page method checks in the page just created.   Here is a screen shot of the page right after a deploy!       Okay!  I know we could make a home page look much better!  However, I built this whole Integrated solution in less than a day with the caveat that the Green Master was already built!  So what am I saying?  Build you web parts, master pages, etc.  At the very end of the engagement build the pages.  The client will be very happy!  Here is the code for this solution Code

• Row Number Transformation

  The Row Number Transformation calculates a row number for each row, and adds this as a new output column to the data flow. The column number is a sequential number, based on a seed value. Each row receives the next number in the sequence, based on the defined increment value. The final row number can be stored in a variable for later analysis, and can be used as part of a process to validate the integrity of the data movement. The Row Number transform has a variety of uses, such as generating surrogate keys, or as the basis for a data partitioning scheme when combined with the Conditional Split transformation. Properties Property Data Type Description Seed Int32 The first row number or seed value. Increment Int32 The value added to the previous row number to make the next row number. OutputVariable String The name of the variable into which the final row number is written post execution. (Optional). The three properties have been configured to support expressions, or they can set directly in the normal manner. Expressions on components are only visible on the hosting Data Flow task, not at the individual component level. Sometimes the data type of the property is incorrectly set when the properties are created, see the Troubleshooting section below for details on how to fix this. Installation The component is provided as an MSI file which you can download and run to install it. This simply places the files on disk in the correct locations and also installs the assemblies in the Global Assembly Cache as per Microsoft’s recommendations. You may need to restart the SQL Server Integration Services service, as this caches information about what components are installed, as well as restarting any open instances of Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) / Visual Studio that you may be using to build your SSIS packages. • How to recover data from a failing hard drive?

  An external 3½" HDD seems to be in danger of failing — it's making ticking sounds when idle. I've acquired a replacement drive, and want to know the best strategy to get the data off of the dubious drive with the best chance of saving as much as possible. There are some directories that are more important than others. However, I'm guessing that picking and choosing directories is going to reduce my chances of saving the whole thing. I would also have to mount it, dump a file listing, and then unmount it in order to be able to effectively prioritize directories. Adding in the fact that it's time-consuming to do this, I'm leaning away from this approach. I've considered just using dd, but I'm not sure how it would handle read errors or other problems that might prevent only certain parts of the data from being rescued, or which could be overcome with some retries, but not so many that they endanger other parts of the drive from being saved. I guess ideally it would do a single pass to get as much as possible and then go back to retry anything that was missed due to errors. Is it possible that copying more slowly — e.g. pausing every x MB/GB — would be better than just running the operation full tilt, for example to avoid any overheating issues? For the "where is your backup" crowd: this actually is my backup drive, but it also contains some non-critical and bulky stuff, like music, that aren't backups, i.e. aren't backed up. The drive has not exhibited any clear signs of failure other than this somewhat ominous sound. I did have to fsck a few errors recently — orphaned inodes, incorrect free blocks/inodes counts, inode bitmap differences, zero dtime on deleted inodes; about 20 errors in all. The filesystem of the partition is ext3.

  Im new to the game-dev world and I have a tendancy to over-simplify my code, and sometimes this costs me alot fo memory. • Optimizing MySQL -

  I've been researching how to optimize MySQL a bit, but I still have a few questions. MySQL Primer Results http://pastie.org/private/lzjukl8wacxfjbjhge6vw Based on this, the first problem seems to be that the max_connections limit is too low. I had a similar problem with Apache initially, the max connection limit was set to 100, and the web server would frequently lock up and take an excruciatingly long time to deliver pages. Raising the connection limit to 512 fixed this issue, and I read that raising the connection limit on MySQL to match this was considered good practice. Being that MySQL has actually been "locking up" recently as well (connections have been refused entirely for a few minutes at a time at random intervals) I'm assuming this is the main cause of the issue. However, as far as table cache goes, I'm not sure what I should set this as. I've read that setting this too high can hinder performance further, so should I raise this to right around 551, 560, 600, or do something else? Lastly, as far as raising the join_buffer_size value goes, this doesn't even seem to be included in Debian's my.cnf file by default. Assuming there's not much I can do about adding indexes, should I look into raising this? Any suggested values? Any suggestions in general here would be appreciated as well. Edit: Here's the number of open tables the MySQL server is reporting. I believe this value is related to my question (Opened_tables: 22574)

• Ruby workflow in Windows

  I've done some searching and quite haven't come across the answer I am looking for. I do not think this is a duplicate of this question. I believe Windows could be a suitable development environment based on the mix of answers in that question. I have been developing in Ruby (mostly Rails but not entirely) for about a year now for personal projects on a Macbook Pro however that machine has faced an untimely death and has been replaced with a nice Windows 7 machine. Ruby development felt almost natural on the Mac after doing some research and setting up the typical stack. My environment then included the standard (Linux like) stuff built into OSX, Text Wrangler, Git, RVM, et al. Not too much of a deviation from what the 'devotees' tend to assume. Now I am setting up my new Windows box for continuing that development. What would my development environment look like? Should I just cave and run Linux in a VM? Ideally I would develop in Windows native. I am aware of the Windows Ruby installer. It seems decent but its not exactly as nice as RVM in the osx/linux world. Mercurial/Git are available so I would assume they play into the stack. Does one develop entirely in Windows? Does one run a webserver in a Linux VM and use it as a test bed while developing in Windows? Do it all in a VM? What does the standard Windows Ruby developer environment look like and what is the workflow? What would a typical step through be for adding a new feature to an ongoing project and what would the technology stack look like?

This problem did not occur before I added the Keyboard Layouts applet to a panel; before doing that, I was able to run my xmodmap script to swap Esc and CapsLock: !Remap Caps_Lock as Escape remove Lock = Caps_Lock keysym Caps_Lock = Escape It may be relevant that I chose alt-capslock as the keyboard switch combo in the Keyboard Layouts preferences. I've had a similar problem before, on a different machine, running openbox. On that machine, this problem started when I upgraded to Lucid, and has persisted in Maverick (release 10.10). I reported a bug in xorg. However, it remains unclear whether it's really a problem with xorg, or if I'm just doing something wrong with my configuration. Have other people experienced this problem? Can someone shed some light on what's going on here? It seems there are quite a few layers involved, and I don't understand any of them particularly well, so any information would be helpful. update I've discovered that the problem is specifically triggered by adding the Canada layout variant "Multilingual" (ca-multix). If I instead add the variant "Multilingual (first part)", the problem does not occur. I think this will probably end up being a usable workaround, but I don't yet know what the difference between these variants is. I've filed a freedesktop issue, and am commenting on a related ubuntu issue.

• Facebook like button for a Facebook feed item

  Here is what I do: When the admin of a website i'm creating adds a new 'news' item to his website, it directly posts the same item on the Facebook 'fanpage' of the website. This is done by an Facebook app with the permissions to post an item on the Facebook fanpage. So far so good. I'm getting the new post id from the facebook graph. Here is what I want to achieve: I'm adding a 'like' button on the original website, but when this is clicked it should be referenced to the same post item on the facebook page. So if someone likes the news post on the website he should also like the referencing facebook feed post. Which is exactly the same. Can this be done? I've been playing around with the href etc of the like button, without any success. When I hit the like button it likes the url given, but is doesn't recognizes that this is a feed post. Any idea? Thx in advance.

• Attach a Wordpress.org blog to my BigCommerce Store as a sub-domain

  I am stuck in a peculiar situation. I have a store on BigCommerce configured with a domain from GoDaddy (mystore.com). I recently created a custom wordpress blog and hosted it on 1and1 hosting (s418783372.onlinehome.us), since bigcommerce can't host Wordpress. Now, I want to use it from a sub-domain of my main-bigcommerece store (models.mystore.com), but it doesn't seem to be working since BigCommerce is the Domain Manager, but GoDaddy is the Domain-Registrar and 1and1 is the host so it doesn't control the domain. I have tried setting up a CNAME record on BigCommerece and when it didn't work asked BigCommerece about it, but they said they can't do anything about it since they aren't the domain registrar and gave me a message saying: The responsiblity to show the name in the browser on the site is up to the server or site admin. The Cname can only get the browser there UPDATE: I succeeded in setting up a CNAME on BigCommerce poinitng to the site at 1and1, but for some-reason, all it gives me is a 404-Not-Found error. I was thinking this is due to a restriction on 1and1, any idea on how to overcome that? Not Found The requested URL / was not found on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. I tried adding a domain on the 1and1 control panel (http://faq.1and1.co.uk/domains/domain_xfers/dns_transfer/4.html), pointing to models.mystore.com, but it isn't letting me add a Sub-Domain, there... UPDATE: I added mystore.com as an external domain and them added models.mystore.com as a sub-domain on the 1and1 hosting Domains panel. And it works :) Thank you all

  There are quite a few image gallery modules for Orchard but they were not invented here I wanted something a lot less sophisticated that would be as barebones and minimalist as possible out of the box, to make customization extremely easy. So I made this, in less than two days (during which I got distracted a lot). Nwazet.ZenGallery uses existing Orchard features as much as it can: Galleries are just a content part that can be added to any type The set of photos in a gallery is simply defined by a folder in Media Managing the images in a gallery is done using the standard media management from Orchard Ordering of photos is simply alphabetical order of the filenames (use 1_, 2_, etc. prefixes if you have to) The path to the gallery folder is mapped from the content item using a token-based pattern The pattern can be set per content type You can edit the generated gallery path for each item The default template is just a list of links over images, that get open in a new tab No lightbox script comes with the module, just customize the template to use your favorite script. Light, light, light. • Why does my browser take me to Scour.com? (redirect virus)

  The "scour" or Rootkit.Win32.TDSS virus has a long history which can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scour Here is the primary symptom: after searching for something in your web browser using google, one of the results that you click on redirects you to scour.com. If you've executed ClamWin, Malwarebytes, McAfee, Norton, etc. to find and isolate the virus without any luck--this isn't really a surprise, since this virus attaches to existing system drivers. I only know of one reliable package that will remove this without ill effects--like adding new spyware. This package is called TDSSKiller. I have seen multiple websites that claim to have this software available, but the one that I know is reliable is located here: http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684 Once you go to Kaspersky's tech support site, the TDSSKiller zip file is available for downloading. When you execute this software, you will be able to "cure" or repair the infected driver. Remember to jot down the name of the driver for future reference--should you need to reinstall the driver from a "same-as" working computer, or your install disk if the repair is ineffective. The driver that happened to get infected on my computer was the tcpip.sys driver. This caused my win sockets to loose their ip addresses. In most other instances, less critical drivers such as HDAudBus.sys are infected. In my case, I was not through correcting my computer problems until I corrected the broken WinSock issue and loaded an earlier version of the tcpip.sys driver from: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 which I placed in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers Don't forget to reboot your computer after your repair! Once you download TDSSKiller and cure/repair your infected driver(s), the redirect on google searches should disappear .
