• Multidimensional Thinking–24 Hours of Pass: Celebrating Women in Technology

  It’s Day 1 of #24HOP and it’s been great to participate in this event with so many women from all over the world in one long training-fest. The SQL community has been abuzz on Twitter with running commentary which is fun to watch while listening to the current speaker. I’m pleased to announce that my business colleague Erika Bakse ( Blog | Twitter) will be presenting on Day 2 – her debut presentation for a PASS event. (And I’m also pleased to say she’s my daughter!) Multidimensional Thinking: The Presentation My contribution to this lineup of terrific speakers was Multidimensional Thinking. Here’s the abstract: “Whether you’re developing Analysis Services cubes or creating PowerPivot workbooks, you need to get into a multidimensional frame of mind to produce a model that best enables users to answer their business questions on their own. Many database professionals struggle initially with multidimensional models because the data modeling process is much different than the one they use to produce traditional, third normal form databases. In this session, I’ll introduce you to the terminology of multidimensional modeling and step through the process of translating business requirements into a viable model.” If you watched the presentation and want a copy of the slides, you can download a copy here. Kimball All the Way There’s only so much I can cover in the time allotted, but I hope that I succeeded in my attempt to build a foundation that prepares you for starting out in business intelligence. One of my favorite resources that will get into much more detail about all kinds of scenarios (well beyond the basics!) is The Data Warehouse Toolkit (Second Edition) by Ralph Kimball. Anything from Kimball or the Kimball Group is worth reading. Kimball material might take reading and re-reading a few times before it makes sense. From my own experience, I found that I actually had to just build my first data warehouse using dimensional modeling on faith that I was going the right direction because it just didn’t click with me initially. I’ve had years of practice since then and I can say it does get easier with practice. The most important thing, in my opinion, is that you simply must prototype a lot and solicit user feedback, because ultimately the model needs to make sense to them. They will definitely make sure you get it right! Schema Generation One question came up after the presentation about whether we use SQL Server Management Studio or Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) to build the tables for the dimensional model. My answer? It really doesn’t matter how you create the tables. Use whatever method that you’re comfortable with. But just so happens that it IS possible to set up your design in BIDS as part of an Analysis Services project and to have BIDS generate the relational schema for you. I did a Webcast last year called Building a Data Mart with Integration Services that demonstrated how to do this. Yes, the subject was Integration Services, but as part of that presentation, I showed how to leverage Analysis Services to build the tables, and then I showed how to use Integration Services to load those tables. I blogged about this presentation in September 2010 and included downloads of the project that I used. In the blog post, I explained that I missed a step in the demonstration. Oops. Just as an FYI, there were two more Webcasts to finish the story begun with the data – Accelerating Answers with Analysis Services and Delivering Information with Reporting Services. • Error installing TFS in Windows 8

  Trying to install TFS on my computer in order to make a demonstration. I can't figure out what else can I do to solve these errors: Information [ System Checks ] TF255142: Windows Firewall is not enabled. If you enable Windows Firewall after configuring Team Foundation Server, you must add exceptions for ports used by Team Foundation Server to Windows Firewall. Error [ Application Tier ] TF255120: Compatibility mode for Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 is not enabled. Team Foundation Server requires this on this operating system. Error [ Application Tier ] TF255456: You must configure Internet Information Services (IIS) to use the Static Content component. Team Foundation Server requires the Static Content component in IIS. • Deploying web services on a RHEL 5 box using Apache/Tomcat/Axis/Java.

  Hi, I am new to the Web services scene. I currently have access to a RHEL5 box and i need to deploy a java web service on it. It runs apache and i know this because i have a website hosted on this machine. Now, i want to deploy a web service on to this website to be able to just pass a link to someone when they need to access my web service. Could someone point out a resource or explain what all i need to get the webservice deployed using Tomcat/Apache Axis and Java. I have done this on Windows (hosted on localhost) but couldn't quite figure out things on linux. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Deepak.

• Are there any negative impact running all services on a single static IP?

  I need to setup a VPN trunk (with remote branch office location), Video Conference and Web Server on-premise in the office. I am used to ISP providing blocks of 8 or 16 IPs. But I have a new ISP which says they only can provide a single IP. Are there any issues with running all services on a single IP? I don't think this has any thing to do with bandwidth..? I'm not using SSL certificates... I can do port forwarding to different machines... What else...? Disclaimer: I am a programmer by training. Sorry for noob question.

• At what point does Active Directory and Domain Services become necessary? [closed]

  I see time and time again such services running in a business environment with only 10 users. Everyone in the office authenticates with the DC and interacts with a shared drive where files and documents are stored. I can't help but think...reeeeealy? But I don't know, that's why I'm asking. To me it seems like you need to reach a certain threshold of size and needs before you throw a DC into the mix. ie: a 20+ user business (and growing) with permission requirements that separate the sales team from accounting. Thoughts?

• DFS-R + Volume Shadow Services - Run VSS at all locations or one?

  I have 4 servers, one at each office location, each sharing read/write copies of 1.5TB of data. Changes are replicated 24/7 between all 4 servers via DFS-R. All servers run Windows 2008 R2. I'm interested in implementing VSS (Volume Shadow Services) on this data. I've read that DFS-R and VSS play nicely together, but I'm left with one unanswered question: turn on VSS at all locations or just one (the headquarters). Can I run VSS at all 4 locations safely, or is it wiser to run it at just 1 location? Thanks!

• Cloud storage services offering one-time download links? [closed]

  Is anyone aware of consumer-targeted cloud storage services that allow users to generate a one-time download link for hosted files? Case in point: I have an encrypted container with some documents I need to send to a vendor. I would prefer to give them a one-time download link, so that I know when they have accessed the file, and then inform them of the passphrase by phone. I have heard that MediaFire offers 1-time links, but that they are buried in tons of advertising. At the moment, I'm not sure that I consider MediaFire fully legitimate; I'm more interested in solutions with Google Drive, Box.net, DropBox, etc.

• Transfer all 1&1 web and e-mail services to own Synology NAS using No-IP for DDNS

  I have a domain x-treem.net. The registrar is DomainDiscover and I have a hosting package with 1&1 which includes web and e-mail. I also have an additional package with 1&1 - Microsoft Exchange which centralises all my e-mails, tasks, contacts, notes, etc. and I connect to it with my PC (Outlook) and my Android phone. I have just purchased a Synology NAS (DS213) and I can see I can run a web server (Web Station), e-mail server (Mail Server) on it amongst other things. I am behind a dynamic IP. So, I'm looking to get some clarification on what I must do to consolidate my services and make use of my NAS to do as much as possible and save third-party hosting costs. My registrar specifies nameservers as NS45.1AND1.CO.UK and NS46.1AND1.CO.UK. The MX record is mx00.1and1.co.uk and mx01.1and1.co.uk. I'm aware of the concept of DDNS and I am looking at using No-IP.com for this. This is where I need clarification. If I registered with the No-IP paid service and pointed my registrar to No-IP's nameservers, and used the DDNS support on my NAS (which supports No-IP), then any requests to x-treem.net would go to my NAS. Is that correct? Therefore, web requests would hit the web server on my NAS, and e-mails would hit the mail server on my NAS? So, given all of the above, I can then drop 1&1 completely and use my NAS for everything. I use MySQL, phpMyAdmin, phpBB on 1&1 all of which the Synology NAS appears to support in its available packages. As for Microsoft Exchange, Synology offers Zafara which appears to be a drop-in replacement for Exchange. Am I on the right track here, or is there anything I am missing?

• Server 2003 Terminal Services Printers not redirecting, no sessions created.

  Ok, odd scenario on a Windows Server 2003 Server Standard running as Terminal Server. Friday, installed 2 new Windows 7 machines to replace older XP machines. After adding these machines and their local printers, none of the otehr 16 Windows 7 machines can redirect printing to the server. I have checked Global Policy on domain controller, nothing is being blocked. In Terminal Services Manager, the client settings are set to User Client Settings. On RDP client, port redirection is enabled. I have tried disabling the Use Client Settings option and manually selected the options for print redirection and default printer connection, but still does not work. After some reaserching, I found this MS article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2492632 I went ahead and added the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Wds\rdpwd\fEnablePrintRDR DWORD that the article references and set it to "1" to enable the option. I restarted the server, but still would not print. I am getting quite desperate with this issue because nothing seems to have changed when installing the two new clients and printers. I uninstalled the print drivers for the printers from the server. I have even gone as far as connecting each of the printers manually via UPD (\computername\printer) but even thought it works, it prints awfully slow. Please help!!!!

• Give access to specific services on Windows 7 Professional machines?

  We have some machines running Windows 7 Professional at our office. The typical user needs to have access to stop and start a service for a local program they run. These machines have a local web server and database installed and we need to restrict access to certain folders and services related to the web server and database for these users. The setup I have tried so far is to add the typical user as a Power User. I have been able to successfully restrict them from accessing certain folders (as far as I can tell) but now they do not have access to the service needed for starting and stopping the local program. My thought was to give them access to the specific service but I have not had any luck yet. In searching the web for solutions the only results I have found relate to Windows Server 2000 and 2003 and involve creating security templates and databases through the Microsoft Management Console. I am hesitant to try an approach like this as these articles are typically older and I worry this method is outdated. Is there a better way to accomplish the end goal of giving the user permission to run the service and restrict their access to certain folders? If any clarification is needed on the setup or what we are trying to achieve, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

• How can I discover zeroconf (Bonjour) services on Android? I'm having trouble with jmDNS.

  I'm working with a Droid / Android 2.0.1 and encountering an issue apparently many people have: I'm unable to discover services using the one pure-Java zeroconf library I know of, jmDNS. (Apple's Bonjour, while it works on Linux and Windows Java, I believe would be harder to port to Android because of reliance on native code.) I can create services, but not discover them. I'm trying to make sense of what's going on. There is an ongoing issue report here; related to multicast and IPv6, but seems to be throwing users of jmDNS, too: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2323 Any idea why this person might be having success? See comment 22 in the bug report. (I'm new to SO, so can't post more than one URL.) I have tested their code, but without any luck. Has anyone successfully accomplished zeroconf service discovery on Android, using jmDNS or another library? Is it possible my discovery issue is related to the IPv6 multicast problem?

• How can I programmatically get the connection status of OSX network services?

  In the OS X System Preferences, when I click on 'Network' I see a green dot by 'Ethernet', and red dots by 'AirPort' and 'FireWire'. This is because I turned off AirPort and FireWire, as I access networks and the Internet via Ethernet. I need to programmatically determine which of these network services displayed in System Preferences have green dots and which have red dots. For Ethernet and FireWire the displayed status is 'Connected' or 'Not Connected', and for AirPort the displayed status is 'On' or 'Off'. Perhaps other network services have other status labels. I have picked through all the plist files in '/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration', particularly 'preferences.plist' and 'NetworkInterfaces.plist'. I can get all sorts of information there, such as the Location set, network service order, proxy information (which is also important to my task), but I cannot find how to determine whether a given network service is on or off--the equivalent of having the green dot displayed. I have also tried using System Configuration framework, specifically the SCNetworkConnectionGetStatus function, but all I get are invalid connection statuses. Does anyone know how to actually retrieve this connection status information? Thanks.

• Eclipse editor closing itself

  I have been facing this weird problem for some days ... When i try to open my eclipse editor it closes itself and just show some error message that is logged in my .log file ..
