• Node.js + Express.js. How to RENDER less css?

  Hello all, I am unable to render less css in my express workspace. Now: I have installed less via npm and I had heard from another post that @imports should reference the .css not the .less. In any case, I have tried the combinations of switching .less for .css in the jade and less files with no success. If you can help or have the solution I'd greatly appreciate it. Note: The jade portion works fine if I enter any ol' .css. Note2: The less compiles if I use lessc via command line.

• NSObjectController confusion binding to a class property. Help!

  Hi, I'm teaching myself cocoa and enjoying the experience most of the time. I have been struggling all day with a simple problem that google has let me down on. I have read the Cocoa Bindings Program Topics and think I grok it but still can't solve my issue. I have a very simple class called MTSong that has various properties. I have used @synthesize to create getter/setters and can use KVC to change properties. i.e in my app controller the following works: mySong = [[MTSong alloc]init]; [mySong setValue:@"2" forKey:@"version"]; In case I am doing something noddy in my class code MTSong.h is: #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> @interface MTSong : NSObject { NSNumber *version; NSString *name; } @property(readwrite, assign) NSNumber *version; @property(readwrite, assign) NSString *name; @end and MTSong.m is: #import "MTSong.h" @implementation MTSong - (id)init { [super init]; return self; } - (void)dealloc { [super dealloc]; } @synthesize version; @synthesize name; @end In Interface Builder I have a label (NSTextField) that I want to update whenever I use KVC to change the version of the song. I do the following: Drag NSObjectController object into the doc window and in the Inspector-Attributes I set: Mode: Class Class Name: MTSong Add a key called version and another called name Go to Inspector-Bindings-Controller Content Bind To: File's Owner (Not sure this is right...) Model Key Path: version Select the cell of the label and go to Inspector Bind to: Object Controller Controller Key: mySong Model Key Path: version I have attempted changing the Model Key Path in step 2 to "mySong" which makes more sense but the compiler complains. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.   I'm trying to understand whay i get an error on this code: (the error is under g++ unix compiler. It doesn't make sense that i really need to write "A::" every time...

  Hi, We dont have root access in our local machine. I installed DBI package first and then installed DBD package. • How to improve the builder pattern?

  Motivation Recently I searched for a way to initialize a complex object without passing a lot of parameter to the constructor. I tried it with the builder pattern, but I don't like the fact, that I'm not able to check at compile time if I really set all needed values. Traditional builder pattern When I use the builder pattern to create my Complex object, the creation is more "typesafe", because it's easier to see what an argument is used for: new ComplexBuilder() .setFirst( "first" ) .setSecond( "second" ) .setThird( "third" ) ... .build(); But now I have the problem, that I can easily miss an important parameter. I can check for it inside the build() method, but that is only at runtime. At compile time there is nothing that warns me, if I missed something. Enhanced builder pattern Now my idea was to create a builder, that "reminds" me if I missed a needed parameter. My first try looks like this: public class Complex { private String m_first; private String m_second; private String m_third; private Complex() {} public static class ComplexBuilder { private Complex m_complex; public ComplexBuilder() { m_complex = new Complex(); } public Builder2 setFirst( String first ) { m_complex.m_first = first; return new Builder2(); } public class Builder2 { private Builder2() {} Builder3 setSecond( String second ) { m_complex.m_second = second; return new Builder3(); } } public class Builder3 { private Builder3() {} Builder4 setThird( String third ) { m_complex.m_third = third; return new Builder4(); } } public class Builder4 { private Builder4() {} Complex build() { return m_complex; } } } } As you can see, each setter of the builder class returns a different internal builder class. Each internal builder class provides exactly one setter method and the last one provides only a build() method. Now the construction of an object again looks like this: new ComplexBuilder() .setFirst( "first" ) .setSecond( "second" ) .setThird( "third" ) .build(); ...but there is no way to forget a needed parameter. The compiler wouldn't accept it. Optional parameters If I had optional parameters, I would use the last internal builder class Builder4 to set them like a "traditional" builder does, returning itself. Questions Is this a well known pattern? Does it have a special name? Do you see any pitfalls? Do you have any ideas to improve the implementation - in the sense of fewer lines of code?

• Using sem_t in a Qt Project

  Hi everyone, I'm working on a simulation in Qt (C++), and would like to make use of a Semaphore wrapper class I made for the sem_t type. Although I am including semaphore.h in my wrapper class, running qmake provides the following error: 'sem_t does not name a type' I believe this is a library/linking error, since I can compile the class without problems from the command line. I've read that you can specify external libraries to include during compilation. However, I'm a) not sure how to do this in the project file, and b) not sure which library to include in order to access semaphore.h. Any help would be greatly appreciated. • trying to build Boost MPI, but the lib files are not created. What's going on?

  I am trying to run a program with Boost MPI, but the thing is I don't have the .lib. So I try to create one by following the instruction at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_43_0/doc/html/mpi/getting_started.html#mpi.config The instruction says "For many users using LAM/MPI, MPICH, or OpenMPI, configuration is almost automatic", I got myself OpenMPI in C:\, but I didn't do anything more with it. Do we need to do anything with it? Beside that, another statement from the instruction: "If you don't already have a file user-config.jam in your home directory, copy tools/build/v2/user-config.jam there." Well, I simply do what it says. I got myself "user-config.jam" in C:\boost_1_43_0 along with "using mpi ;" into the file.   I'm 2 errors away from compiling Qgears. (Hacked Version of the Final Fantasy VII Engine) I've messed with the preprocessors to load the actual location of the ogre header files.   I am trying to crawl a site using mechanize. The site provides search results in different pages. When posting to get the next set of results, something is wrong and the server redirects me to the first page, asking mechanize to update the SearchSession Cookie.   Ok, everything is 'functionally' working with what I am attempting to accomplish and once again, I am sure this is something dumb, but I cannot figure out how to do this one thing. I have an edit form for an entity, lets say a car. This 'car' can have 0 - many passengers. So on my edit form, I have all the fields for the car, then a list view showing each passenger (partial). I also have a 'add new passenger' button that will render a new partial view that allows you to enter a passenger. This has a cancel link and an add button to submit an Ajax form. When you add a passenger, the passenger is automatically added to the list, but I need the enter passenger form to go away. I have tried using the onSuccess and onComplete functions to hide the div that the form is in, but both render just the partial view HTML elements (white screen, text) and not the partialView in the context of the entire page. • Freezes (not crashes) with GCD, blocks and Core Data

  I have recently rewritten my Core Data driven database controller to use Grand Central Dispatch to manage fetching and importing in the background. Controller can operate on 2 NSManagedContext's: NSManagedObjectContext *mainMoc instance variable for main thread. this contexts is used only by quick access for UI by main thread or by dipatch_get_main_queue() global queue. NSManagedObjectContext *bgMoc for background tasks (importing and fetching data for NSFetchedresultsController for tables). This background tasks are fired ONLY by user defined queue: dispatch_queue_t bgQueue (instance variable in database controller object). Fetching data for tables is done in background to not block user UI when bigger or more complicated predicates are performed. I know this pattern is not completely clean for at last 2 reasons: bgQueue not necessarily fires the same thread after suspension but since it is serial, it should not matter much (there is never 2 threads trying access bgMoc NSManagedObjectContext dedicated to it). Sometimes table view data source methods will ask NSFetchedResultsController for info from bgMoc (since fetch is done on bgQueue) like sections count, fetched objects in section count, etc.... Event with this flaws this approach works pretty well of the 95% of application running time until ... AND HERE GOES MY QUESTION: Sometimes, very randomly application freezes but not crashes. It does not response on any touch and the only way to get it back to live is to restart it completely (switching back to and from background does not help). No exception is thrown and nothing is printed to the console (I have Breakpoints set for all exception in Xcode). I have tried to debug it using Instruments (time profiles especially) to see if there is something hard going on on main thread but nothing is showing up. I am aware that GCD and Core Data are the main suspects here, but I have no idea how to track / debug this. Let me point out, that this also happens when I dispatch all the tasks to the queues asynchronously only (using dispatch_async everywhere). This makes me think it is not just standard deadlock. Is there any possibility or hints of how could I get more info what is going on? Some extra debug flags, Instruments magical tricks or build setting etc... Any suggestions on what could be the cause are very much appreciated as well as (or) pointers to how to implement background fetching for NSFetchedResultsController and background importing in better way.

And the argument still rages. I see Singletons as a Design Pattern (good and bad). The problem with Singleton is not the Pattern but rather the users (sorry everybody). Everybody and their father thinks they can implement one correctly (and from the many interviews I have done, most people can't). Also because everybody thinks they can implement a correct Singleton they abuse the Pattern and use it in situations that are not appropriate (replacing global variables with Singletons!). So the main questions that need to be answered are: When should you use a Singleton How do you implement a Singleton correctly My hope for this article is that we can collect together in a single place (rather than having to google and search multiple sites) an authoritative source of when (and then how) to use a Singleton correctly. Also appropriate would be a list of Anti-Usages and common bad implementations explaining why they fail to work and for good implementations their weaknesses. • App starts in 1.5 emulator but doesn't in 1.6

  My app works on 1.5 emulator and 1.5 device. When i try to start it on 1.6 emulator, it produces strange exceptions (doesn't even start). I don't have any 1.6 device to try this app if it works on a real device. I get some warnings in Eclipse ( warning: Ignoring InnerClasses attribute for an anonymous inner class that doesn't come with an associated EnclosingMethod attribute. This class was probably produced by a broken compiler.) and get cant rid of them (i think they come from some apache jars that i need to make http multipart posts). Is it possible that this jars are cause for my exceptions in 1.6 or is it something else? • TableViewCell autorelease error

  OK, for two days now i have been trying to solve an error i have inside the cellForRowAtIndex method, let start by saying that i have tracked down the bug to this method, the error is [CFDictionary image] or [Not a Type image] message sent to deallocated instance. I know about the debug flags, NSZombie, MallocStack, and others, they helped me narrow it down to this method and why, but I do not know how to solve besides a redesign of the app UI. • Database - Designing an "Events" Table

  After reading the tips from this great Nettuts+ article I've come up with a table schema that would separate highly volatile data from other tables subjected to heavy reads and at the same time lower the number of tables needed in the whole database schema, however I'm not sure if this is a good idea since it doesn't follow the rules of normalization and I would like to hear your advice, here is the general idea: I've four types of users modeled in a Class Table Inheritance structure, in the main "user" table I store data common to all the users (id, username, password, several flags, ...) along with some TIMESTAMP fields (date_created, date_updated, date_activated, date_lastLogin, ...). To quote the tip #16 from the Nettuts+ article mentioned above: Example 2: You have a “last_login” field in your table. It updates every time a user logs in to the website. But every update on a table causes the query cache for that table to be flushed. You can put that field into another table to keep updates to your users table to a minimum. Now it gets even trickier, I need to keep track of some user statistics like how many unique times a user profile was seen how many unique times a ad from a specific type of user was clicked how many unique times a post from a specific type of user was seen and so on... One thing that I've come to like in this design is that I can keep track of all the user logins instead of just the last one, and thus generate some interesting metrics with that data. Due to the nature of the events table I also thought of making some optimizations, such as: #9: Since there is only a finite number of tables and a finite (and predetermined) number of events, the TABLE and EVENTS columns could be setup as ENUMs instead of VARCHARs to save some space. #14: Store IPs as UNSIGNED INT with INET_ATON() instead of VARCHARs. Store DATEs as TIMESTAMPs instead of DATETIMEs. Use the ARCHIVE (or the CSV?) engine instead of InnoDB / MyISAM. Overall, each event would only consume 14 bytes which is okay for my traffic I guess. Pros: Ability to store more detailed data (such as logins). No need to design (and code for) almost a dozen additional tables (dates and statistics). Reduces a few columns per table and keeps volatile data separated. Cons: Non-relational (still not as bad as EAV): SELECT * FROM events WHERE id = 2 AND table = 'user' ORDER BY date DESC(); 6 bytes overhead per event (ID, TABLE and EVENT). I'm more inclined to go with this approach since the pros seem to far outweigh the cons, but I'm still a little bit reluctant.. Am I missing something? What are your thoughts on this? Thanks!

• Why touching "d_name" makes calls to readdir() fail?

  Hi, I'm trying to write a little helper for Windows which eventually will accept a file extension as an argument and return the number of files of that kind in the current directory. To do so, I'm reading the file entries in the directories and after getting the extension I'd like to convert it to lowercase to compare it with the yet-to-add specified argument. When converting the extension to lowercase I found that touching even a duplicate string of the d_name variable will cause a strange behaviour, like no more calls to readdir are called. • Seg Fault when using std::string on an embedded Linux platform

  Hi, I have been working for a couple of days on a problem with my application running on an embedded Arm Linux platform. Unfortunately the platform precludes me from using any of the usual useful tools for finding the exact issue. When the same code is run on the PC running Linux, I get no such error. In the sample below, I can reliably reproduce the problem by uncommenting the string, list or vector lines. Leaving them commented results in the application running to completion. I expect that something is corrupting the heap, but I cannot see what? The program will run for a few seconds before giving a segmentation fault. • Catching an exception class within a template

  I'm having a problem using the exception class Overflow() for a Stack template I'm creating. If I define the class regularly there is no problem. If I define the class as a template, I cannot make my call to catch() work properly. However, once I define it as a template, this ceases to work. I've tried all sorts of syntaxes, but I always get one of two sets of error messages from the compiler. Arguments and variables of objects cannot be either Collections or arrays. • What was your the most impressive technical programming achievement performed to impress a romantic

  OK, so the archetypal human story is for a guy to go out and impress the girl with some wonderful achievement like slaying a dragon or building a monument or conquering neighboring tribe. This being enlightened 21st century on SO, let's morph this into a: StackOverflower performing a feat of programming to impress a romantic interest. There are two ways to do this: Technical achievement: Impressing a person with suitable background/understanding of programming with actual coding powerss you displayed. A dumb movie example would be that kid in "Hackers" move showing off his hacking skills in front of Angeline Jolie. Artistic achievement: Impressing a person with a result of running said code, whether they understand just how incredible the code itself is. An example is the animated ANSI rose (for a guy who actually wrote the ANSI code) This question is only about the first kind (technical achievements) - e.g. the person of interest was presented with impressive code/design that (s)he was able to properly appreciate. Rules (what doesn't qualify): The target audience must have been a person of romantic interest (prospective or present significant other or random hook-up). E.g. showing your program to your sister who's also a software developer doesn't count. The achievement must have been done specifically with the goal to impress such a person. However, it is OK if the achievement was done to impress a generic qualifying person, not someone specific. Although... if you write code to impress girls in general, I'd say "get a better idea of the opposite sex" The achievement must have been done with the goal of impressing the person. In other words, if you would have done it without romantic interest's knowledge anyway, it doesn't count. As examples, the following does not count: programming for your job. Programming for a coding contest. Open Source program that you'd have done anyway. The precise nature of the awesomeness of the achievement is somewhat irrelevant - from learning entire J2EE in 2 days to writing fancy game engine to implementing Python compiler in LOGO. As long as it's programming/software development related. The achievement should preferably be something other people would rank highly as well. If your date was impressed with your skill at calculating Fibonacci sequence without recursive function calls, it doesn't mean most developers will be. But it does mean you need to start finding better things to do on dates ;)
