  • Serving images from another hostname vs Apache overload for the rewrites

    We are trying to improve further the speed of some sites with older HTML in order as well to obtain better SEO results. We have now applied some minify measures, combined html, css etc. We use a small virtualized infrastructure and we've always wanted to use a light + standar http server configuration so the first one can serve images and static contents vs the other one php, rewrites, etc. We can easily do that now with a VM using the same files and conf of vhosts (bind mounts) on apache but with hardly any modules loaded. This means the light httpd will have smaller fingerprint that would allow us to serve more and quicker, have more minSpareServer running, etc. So, as browsers benefit from loading static content from different hostnames as well, we've thought about building a rewrite rule on our main server (main.com) to "redirect" all images and css *.jpg, *.gif, *.css etc to the same at say cdn.main.com thus the browser being able to have more connections. The question is, assuming we have a very complex rewrite ruleset already (we manually manipulate many old URLs for SEO) will it be worth? I mean will the additional load of main's apache to have to redirect main.com/image.jpg (I understand we'll have to do a 301) to cdn.main.com/image.jpg + then cdn.main.com having to serve it, be larger than the gain we would be archiving on the browser? Could the excess of 301s of all images on a page be penalized by google? How do large companies work this out, does the original code already include images linked from the cdn with absolute paths? EDIT Just to clarify, our concern is not to do so much with server performance or bandwith. We could obviously employ an external CDN server but we have plenty CPU and bandwith. Our concern is with how to have "old" sites with plenty semi-static HTML content benefiting from splitting connections for images and static content via apache without having to change the html to absolute paths (ie. image.jpg to cdn.main.com/image.jpg happening on the server not the code)

  • SQL 2K5 - Multiple databases vs. Multiple files

    Hey all, quick question. Our current legacy system was built using multiple distinct databases (about ten of them). These are all part of the same discreet system, and a large number of SPs and functionalty span multiple databases. There are also key relationships that span (for example, a header table may be in database A with history, etc. in database B). When deploying multiple copies of our app to the same server therefore, we have to use multiple instances (because the database names are coded into so many sprocs). We're evaluating the idea of taking these ten databases (about 30gb total with individual sizes ranging from 100mb to 10gb) and merging them into a single database. Currently, we have our databases spread accross multiple spindles for better IO. The question I have is whether or not there is any performance loss or benefit of having 10 different databases vs. 10 different database files? i.e. rather than having three databases (A, B, and C) Disk D: A.mdf (1gb) Disk E: B.mdf (4gb) Disk F: C.mdf (10gb) Disk G: A_Log.ldf, B_Log.ldf, C_Log.ldf have one database (X) Disk D: X1.mdf (5gb) Disk E: X2.mdf (5gb) Disk F: X3.mdf (5gb) Disk G: X1_log.ldf,X2_log.ldf,X3_log.ldf Thanks! -Bob

  • RHEL 6 vs latest vanilla kernel differences?

    What are the differences of the RHEL 6 kernel and the latest kernel.org one? I know RHEL is based on 2.6.32 with some features backported from newer kernels and that it also has other features that are not yet part of the latest vanilla kernel. Is there any comparison of the features of both kernels so I can tell how advanced is the RHEL kernel 6 vs. latest vanilla and vice versa?. It don't have to be the latest kernel at all, but the more recent the vanilla version, the better. What I want to know is: What features I lose/win if I change the RHEL kernel for the latest kernel.org’s one? What features are less matured/developed in the latest vanilla kernel than in RHEL’s (and vice versa)? (I guess KVM virtualization is one of them, but I'm not so sure.) What things (libraries / programs / etc) don’t interact as well with the latest vanilla kernel than with the RHEL’s one? In a related note: Is there ANY way to be as up to date (kernelwise) as possible (using RHEL 6) without loosing too much in the process? (Any way except doing the patching myself, I don’t have the necessary expertise) Any repo I don’t know of? Any alternative? Update: The srpm doesn't include patches (see comments), so that way is not possible. Clarification: I'm interested in how "old" the RHEL kernel gets as time goes by, and to know when the latest upstream kernel includes all the improvements included in the RHEL version.

  • Building vs buying a server for an academic lab [closed]

    I'm looking for advice on the classic build vs buy question. We need a new linux server to run Matlab computation on in our lab (academic). Matlab parallel computing toolbox licence allows up to 12 local workers so we are aiming at a 12 core server with 4GB memory per core (total of 48gb). The system will have an SSD for the OS and a raid-5 (4x2tb) for data. I looked around and found a (relatively) cheap vendor, Silicon Mechanics, that offers a system to our liking (specs below) for $6732. However, buying the components from newegg cost only $4464! The difference is $2268 which is 50% of the base cost. If buying from a company can be thought of as a sort of insurance, basically my premiums are of 50% of the base cost which to me sounds like a lot. Of course any downtime is bad, but the work is not "mission critical", i.e. if it takes a few days to fix it when it breaks its no the end of the world. If it takes weeks to months then its a problem. If it breaks 2-3 times in 3 years, not too bad. If it breaks every month not good. In term of build experience, I set up a linux cluster in grad school (from existing computers) and I build my home pcs but I never built a server before.     I have been asked to summarise the pros and cons in connection with the choices between Microsoft Office Vs OpenOffice. I have a broad idea of what needs to be said. However I would like to open a discussion here and have a single place to go to when the time comes to give the summary to management. There are obvious points of contention: For me the lack of compliance with Group Policy is a major concern [Default save location/visibility of C:/Visibility of files and folders on the HDD] However I am sure that functionality and compatibility will be the prime mover. We are looking at making major savings by reducing our commitment to Microsoft licensing. So what are your experiences? What happens when there are no direct equivalents? [Word has a close match in OpenOffice, but a database solution match is not as close, neither is an Outlook [connecting to Exchange Server and downloading all calendars, shared calendars, scheduled events, for Exchange will still exist after the move to OpenSource solutions] In summary then: What do you see as: The benefits of this plan?   • EXC_BAD_ACCESS and KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS after intiating a print sequence.

    MAC G4/1.5GHz/2GB/1TB+ OS10.4.11 Start up Volume has been erased/complete reinstall with updated software. Current problem only occurs when printing to an Epson Artisan 800 [USB as well as Ethernet connected] when using Macromedia FreeHand 10.0.1.67. All other apps/printers work fine. Memory has been removed/swapped/reinstalled several times, CPU was changed from 1.5GB to 1.3GB. Page(s) will print, but application quits within a second or two after selecting "print." Apple has never replied, Epson hasn't a clue, and I am befuddled!! Perhaps there is GURU out their who and see a bigger-better picture and understands how to interpret all of this stuff. If so, it would be a terrific pleasure to get a handle on how to cure this problem or get some A M M U N I T I O N to fire in the right direction. I thank you in advance.     Hello, I am using Delphi and I want to determinate the physical MAC address of a network device in my network, in this case the Router itself. My code: var idsnmp: tidsnmp; val:string; begin idsnmp := tidsnmp.create; try idsnmp.QuickSend('.1.3.6.1.2.1.4.22.1.2', 'public', '10.0.0.1', val); showmessage(val); finally idsnmp.free; end; end; where 10.0.0.1 is my router. Alas, QuickSend does always send "Connection reset by peer #10054". I tried to modify the MIB-OID and I also tried the IP 127.0.0.1 which connection should never fail.     Followed the instructions on the Rails wiki and have had success connecting to SQL Server 2000 with TSQL -- both with DSN-less and DNS connections. I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.3. Wiki instructions here. Installed ruby-odbc, dbi (0.4.0), dbd-odbc (2.4.5), activerecord-sqlserver-adapter (2.3.5). In my database.yml (Rails 2.3.6): development: adapter: sqlserver mode: ODBC dsn: 'DRIVER=/usr/local/lib/libtdsodbc.so;TDS_Version=8.0;SERVER=mssql01.discountasp.net;DATABASE=DB_164368_dmusd;Port=1433;uid=DB_164368_dmusd_user;pwd=Schools77;' This yields the following error: ODBC::Error: S1090 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Invalid string or buffer length When I attempt to use a DSN connection, I get the following error: ODBC::Error: IM002 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified I have in fact verified that the FreeTDS driver (libtdsodbc.so) is installed and the path correct.   • How can I use the SSRS ReportViewer from VS 2008 in a VS2010 project?

    Hi, I'm working on an ASP.NET MVC 2 / .NET 3.5 project which includes SSRS 2008 reports. After migrating to VS 2010 RC, the new web forms report viewer has been giving so much trouble that I'd like to use the old report viewer from VS 2008 again. Now I'm just wondering what would be the easiest way to do that. The report viewer is embedded in a Webforms ASPX file which is loaded in an IFrame by the the MVC view. Report parameters are currently stored as session variables, and for security reasons I would prefer not to change that for HTTP POST or GET parameters. So I can't just put the report viewer in a separate application and build that with VS2008. Moving the entire project back to VS 2008 is not an option. So, what's the easiest way for me to use the VS 2008 ReportViewer in VS 2010? Is there way to grab an assembly from VS 2008 and use that in my project? Thanks, Adrian

    Hi I uninstalled my VS 2010 RC to install VS 2010. However, it fails to install with the following error in the log files: d:\vs_setup.msi could not be opened. I've tried running the windows clean install and deleting any VS2010 files; also renamed the Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0 folder in the registry, but I keep getting the same error. I can see the vs_setup.msi on the dvd, it just won't allow me to run it directly. I have to run setup.exe. Any ideas?

    We have identified a couple of repeatable, demonstrable scenarios with unexplained rejected folder access on our servers for Mac users. Hopefully, this can be presented to Novell for a solution. What we did to demonstrate scenario 1; 1. setup a PC and Mac side-by-side 2. login to our server and open up to a central location on both Mac and PC 3. on the PC in that central location create a folder 4. on the Mac in that central location drag the created folder to the Mac desktop, this should work fine, no problem 5. on the PC rename that folder 6. on the Mac drag a file to that renamed folder, this should error with the following message; a. You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long for the destination. Do you want to skip copying these items and continue copying the other items? b. Select skip, response is the filename is copied to the location with zero or small byte size. Try opening it and you get file is corrupted error message. What we did to demonstrate scenario 2; 1. setup a PC and Mac side-by-side 2. login to our server and open up to a central location on both Mac and PC 3. on the PC in that central location create a folder then create a subfolder 4. copy some content into the subfolder 5. on the Mac in that central location drag the created top level folder to the Mac desktop, this should work fine, no problem 6. on the PC rename that subfolder 7. on the Mac drag that top level folder to the Mac desktop, this should error on the Mac with the following; a. The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for b. The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for 8. on the Mac, if you open that subfolder you can see the file copied in step 4 above but, you can not open that file, you get the following message if you try; a. There was an error opening this document. You do not have permission to open this file. 9. on the PC drag some content into the top level folder 10. on the Mac you can open that file directly from the server or copy it locally, no problem, however-the subfolder is still corrupted or locked, whichever 11. on the PC rename the top level folder 12. on the Mac that same file just opened in step 10 above is now not accessible, get the following message; a. The document could not be opened. I have observed some variances in the above. For instance, a change on the PC side may take a moment before you can observer or act on the Mac side - kind of like the server is slow to respond. Also, the error message may vary. However, the key is once a folder, or subfolder, gets renamed by a PC, Mac problems commence. The solution is to create a new folder from a PC and copy the contents of the corrupted folder to the new folder and not rename the folder name. This has to be done on a PC because the corrupted folder is not accessible by a Mac user. Another problem that dovetails with the above is that we know certain characters are not allowed for PC folder or filenames. If a Mac user creates a folder with a slash in the file name, from the PC the user does not see that slash in the name. As soon as the PC user copies a file to that folder, the Mac user is locked from that folder. Will get the following error message; - Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. - (Error code - 50) In addition to the above mentioned character issue with folders, the problem is more evil with filenames. If, for example, you create a file with a slash in the filename on a Mac and copy it to the server you will get the following error message; - You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long for the destination. Do you want to skip copying these items and continue copying the other items? Select either Stop or Skip buttons. It does not matter which button is selected. The file name gets copied to the destination location at a reduced size. Depending on the file type, the icon associated with the file may or may not be present. Furthermore, if you open that file on the server you will get the following message; - Couldnt open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that doesnt recognize. From the users perspective, if they are not observant of the icon or file size, they may disregard the error message and think their file has copied as intended. Only later do they discover the file is corrupt if they open that file. I want to make a note on this problem. It is the PC causing the issue. You can change folder and file names all day on a MAC and you don't have a problem as long as a character is not the issue. Once you change the file name or folder name from a PC the entire folder structure from that level down is corrupted. But it has to be resolved from a PC by creating a new folder and copying the contents to the new folder like stated above. Is something not configured correctly?     with vs 2008 I always used Web Deployment Project to build to three different environments. It is maybe not the best solution, since I still have to xcopy the built files to the server, but it is simple. now with vs 2010 it looks promising, but It looks also complicated. My hosting doesn't have Web Deploy, the newest feature and the flagship technology for deployment in vs2010. My question how can I just build for each environment and copy the files over to the server. Using the Build Deployment Package will create the zip file and when I extract it, it will output so many files and confusing folder structure. Anyone has suggestion?

  • python c extension, problems with dlopen on mac os

    I've taken a library that is distributed as a binary lib (.a) and header, written some c++ code against it, and want to wrap the results up in a python module. I've done this here. The problem is that when importing this module on Mac OSX (I've tried 10.5 and 10.6), I get the following error: dlopen(/Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/dirac.so, 2): Symbol not found: _DisposePtr Referenced from: /Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/dirac.so Expected in: dynamic lookup This looks like symbols defined in the Carbon framework aren't being properly resolved, but I'm not sure what to do about that. I am supplying -framework Carbon to distutil.core.Extension's extra_link_args parameter, so I'm not sure what else I should do. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have been reading that the issue relates to cached vs not cached image load ? (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/316236/uiimage-imagenamed-vs-uiimage-imagewithdata) Currently my app loads a series of images via "imageNamed:" replacing the "imageNamed:" call with "imageWithContentsOfFile" seems to solve the issue. Has anybody any information about the img_data_lock caller ? Why would someone use "imageNamed" if it takes such a toll on memory ?
