  I'm currently trying to write a class library for a connection to a database. Looking over it, there are several different types of queries: Select From, Update, Insert, etc. My question is, what is the best practice for writing these queries in a C# application? Should I have a separate method for each of them(i.e. Update(), Insert()), or have a generic Query() that would be able to handle all of these? Thanks for any and all help!

• Microsoft SyncFramework - Sync different tables into one

  Hello, we are trying to get the Microsoft SyncFramework running in our application to synchronize an oracle db with a mobile device. Problem The queries that we need to gather the data on the oracle db take much time (and we haven't found a way to speed them up yet), so we try to split them up in as much portions as possible. One big part of the whole problem is, that we need different information out of one big table, that bloats a query if combined. Unfortunately, the SyncFramework allows only one TableAdapter per SyncTable. Now this is a problem for our application: If we were able to use more than one TableAdapter per SyncTable, we could easily spread the queries in a more efficient way. Using one query per Table which combines all the needed data takes way too much time. Ideas I thought of creating different TableAdapters for each one of the required queries and then merge the resulting datasets afterwards (preferably on the server). This seems to work, but is a rather awkward solution. Does someone of you know a better solution? Or do you have some ideas that could help? • If record exists in database, UPDATE a single column

  I have a bulk uploading object in place that is being used to bulk upload roughly 25-40 image files at a time. Each image is about 100-150 kb in size. During the upload, I've created a for each loop that takes the file name of the image (minus the file extension) to write it into a column named "sku". Also, for each file being uploaded, the date is recorded to a column named DateUpdated, as well as some image path data. This is because these product images are always being revised and improved. For each new/improved image, the file name and extension will remain the same - so that when image 321-54321.jpg was first uploaded to the server, the new/improved version of that image will still have the image file name as 321-54321.jpg. I can't say for sure if the file sizes will remain in the 100-150KB range. I'll assume that the image file size will grow eventually. When images get uploaded (again), there of course will be an existing record in the database for that image. What is the best way to: Check the database for the existing record (stored procedure or SqlDataReader or create a DataSet ...?) Then if record exists, simply UPDATE that record so that the DateUpdated column gets today's date. If no record exists, do the INSERT of the record as normal. Things to consider: If the record exists, we'll let the actual image be uploaded. It will simply overwrite the existing image so that the new version gets displayed on the web. We're using SQL Server 2000 on hosted environment (DiscountAsp). I'm programming in C#. The uploading process will be used by about 2 managers a few times a month (each) - which to me is not a allot of usage. Although I'm a jr. developer, I'm guessing that a stored procedure would be the way to go. Just seems more efficient - to do this record check away from the for each loop... but not sure. I'd need extra help writing a sproc, since I don't have too much experience with them. Thank everyone...

• How to configure a GridView CommandField to trigger Full Page Update in UpdatePanel

  I have 2 user controls on my page. One is used for searching, and the other is used for editing (along with a few other things). The user control that provides the search functionality uses a GridView to display the search results. This GridView has a CommandField used for editing (showEditButton="true"). I would like to place the GridView into an UpdatePanel so that paging through the search results will be smooth. The thing is that when the user clicks the Edit Link (the CommandField) I need to preform a full page postback so that the search user control can be hidden and the edit user control can be displayed. Edit: the reason I need to do a full page postback is because the edit user control is outside of the UpdatePanel that my GridView is in. It is not only outside the UpdatePanel, but it's in a completely different user control. I have no idea how to add the CommandField as a full page postback trigger to the UpdatePanel. The PostBackTrigger (which is used to indicate the controls cause a full page postback) takes a ControlID as a parameter; however the CommandButton does not have an ID...and you can see why I'm having a problem with this. Update on what else I've tried to solve the problem: I took a new approach to solving the problem. In my new approach, I used a TemplateField instead of a CommandField. I placed a LinkButton control in the TemplateField and gave it a name. During the GridView's RowDataBound event I retrieved the LinkButton control and added it to the UpdatePanel's Triggers. This is the ASP Markup for the UpdatePanel and the GridView <asp:UpdatePanel ID="SearchResultsUpdateSection" runat="server"> <ContentTemplate> <asp:GridView ID="SearchResultsGrid" runat="server" AllowPaging="true" AutoGenerateColumns="false"> <Columns> <asp:TemplateField> <HeaderTemplate></HeaderTemplate> <ItemTemplate> <asp:LinkButton ID="Edit" runat="server" Text="Edit"></asp:LinkButton> </ItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> <asp:BoundField ...... </Columns> </asp:GridView> </ContentTemplate> </asp:UpdatePanel> In my VB.NET code. I implemented a function that handles the GridView's RowDataBound event. In this method I find the LinkButton for the row being bound to, create a PostBackTrigger for the LinkButton, and add it to the UpdatePanel's Triggers. This means that a PostBackTrigger is created for every "edit" LinkButton in the GridView Edit: this did not create a PostBackTrigger for Every "edit" LinkButton because the ID is the same for all LinkButtons in the GridView.   I'm trying to get twitter update_profile_image to work using OAuth. I was using curl with regular authentication and everything was working fine, but I switched to OAuth using this library, and now everything except update_profile_image works. I read something about twitter OAuth having problems with multipart data, but that was a while ago and the plugin is supposed to have dealt with that issue.   I need to display a real time data from MS SQL 2005. I saw some blogs that recommend Ajax to solve my problem. Basically, right now I have my default.aspx page only just for a workaround I could able to display the data from my DB. But once I add data manually to my DB there's no updating made. Any suggestions guys to fix this problem? I need to update datagridview with out refreshing the page. • Google Drive Update keeps throwing an error when I try to save a thumbnail

  The Base64 string checks out fine. I was able to export it to another website and download it again as my image. When I try to do an update using the Drive Javascript api, it just keeps returning this error: Invalidvaluefor:Notavalidbase64bytestring I also true making the string URL safe. Per this page https://google-api-client-libraries.appspot.com/documentation/drive/v2/python/latest/drive_v2.files.html Am I doing something wrong here, the documentation says send Base64, the string is valid and, the string is intact throughout the process, but Google will not accept it? I am using the javascript api, I think there is maybe a bug sending the thumbnail using the javascript api.   I ask the following in the hope that someone might come up with a generic description about the problem.Basically I have no idea whats wrong with my code. When I run the code below, plot nr. 8 turns out wrong. Specifically the subset in geom_point does not work the way it should. If somebody can tell me what the problem is, I'll update this post.   I've got a basic photo album application, on the first view a list of albums is displayed with a subtitle showing how many images are in each album. I've got everything working to add albums, and add images to albums. The problem is that the image count lines are accurate whenever the app loads, but I can't get them to update during execution. • Hibernate: update on parent-child relationship causes duplicate children

  I have a parent child relationship in which the parent has a collection of children (a set to be specific). The child collection is setup with cascade="all-delete-orphan". When I initially save the parent element everything works as expected. However, when I update the parent and save again, all the children are re-saved. This behavior leads me to believe that the parent is losing its reference to the collection of children, and therefore when persisting all the children are re-saved. It seems the only way to fix this is to not use the setter method of this child collection, but unfortunately this setter is called implicitly in my application (Spring MVC is used to bind a multi-select form element to this collection, and the setter is called by spring on the form submission). Overwriting this setter to not lose the reference (ie, do a colleciton.clear() and collection.addAll(newCollection) rather than collection = newCollection) is apparently a hibernate no-no, as is pointed out here: https://forum.hibernate.org/viewtopic.php?t=956859 Does anyone know how to circumvent this problem? I've posted some of my code below. • Please clarify how create/update happens against child entities of an aggregate root

  After much reading and thinking as I begin to get my head wrapped around DDD, I am a bit confused about the best practices for dealing with complex hierarchies under an aggregate root. I think this is a FAQ but after reading countless examples and discussions, no one is quite talking about the issue I'm seeing. If I am aligned with the DDD thinking, entities below the aggregate root should be immutable. This is the crux of my trouble, so if that isn't correct, that is why I'm lost. Here is a fabricated example...hope it holds enough water to discuss. Consider an automobile insurance policy (I'm not in insurance, but this matches the language I hear when on the phone w/ my insurance company). Policy is clearly an entity. Within the policy, let's say we have Auto. Auto, for the sake of this example, only exists within a policy (maybe you could transfer an Auto to another policy, so this is potential for an aggregate as well, which changes Policy...but assume it simpler than that for now). Since an Auto cannot exist without a Policy, I think it should be an Entity but not a root. So Policy in this case is an aggregate root. Now, to create a Policy, let's assume it has to have at least one auto. This is where I get frustrated. Assume Auto is fairly complex, including many fields and maybe a child for where it is garaged (a Location). If I understand correctly, a "create Policy" constructor/factory would have to take as input an Auto or be restricted via a builder to not be created without this Auto. And the Auto's creation, since it is an entity, can't be done beforehand (because it is immutable? maybe this is just an incorrect interpretation). So you don't get to say new Auto and then setX, setY, add(Z). If Auto is more than somewhat trivial, you end up having to build a huge hierarchy of builders and such to try to manage creating an Auto within the context of the Policy. One more twist to this is later, after the Policy is created and one wishes to add another Auto...or update an existing Auto. Clearly, the Policy controls this...fine...but Policy.addAuto() won't quite fly because one can't just pass in a new Auto (right!?). Examples say things like Policy.addAuto(VIN, make, model, etc.) but are all so simple that that looks reasonable. But if this factory method approach falls apart with too many parameters (the entire Auto interface, conceivably) I need a solution. From that point in my thinking, I'm realizing that having a transient reference to an entity is OK. So, maybe it is fine to have a entity created outside of its parent within the aggregate in a transient environment, so maybe it is OK to say something like: auto = AutoFactory.createAuto(); auto.setX auto.setY or if sticking to immutability, AutoBuilder.new().setX().setY().build() and then have it get sorted out when you say Policy.addAuto(auto) This insurance example gets more interesting if you add Events, such as an Accident with its PolicyReports or RepairEstimates...some value objects but most entities that are all really meaningless outside the policy...at least for my simple example. The lifecycle of Policy with its growing hierarchy over time seems the fundamental picture I must draw before really starting to dig in...and it is more the factory concept or how the child entities get built/attached to an aggregate root that I haven't seen a solid example of. I think I'm close. Hope this is clear and not just a repeat FAQ that has answers all over the place.

• Excel 2007 VBA macros don't work in Parallels

  I've got a complex Excel spreadsheet I need to use at work. My colleagues use the spreadsheet on Windows PC's, with no special configuration required. I want to run it on a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. The spreadsheet contains VBA macros which connect to external Oracle db's over the Internet. If I understand correctly, Excel on the Mac doesn't run VBA macros, so I have to use Parallels. I installed Parallels on the Mac and it's running correctly, as far as I can tell. I installed Excel 2007 under Parallels. I can open the Excel spreadsheet in Parallels and click buttons in the spreadsheet to run macros, but the macros fail with compiler errors. I don't have the password to the source code for the VBA macros, and if possible, I don't want to dig in to the code at that level. I know that there are quite a few things that could go wrong, and examining the VBA code might help, but I'm hoping to solve the problem without going down that road. The spreadsheet runs without any special configuration on Windows, so I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of any limitations of Excel VBA macros under Parallels, or anything else I could do to get this spreadsheet working. It's the only thing that's keeping me from using this MacBook Pro at work. Here is the error message: Compile error in hidden module: clsXXXXx0020Toolx0020Ser. The specific compilation error is not exposed because the module is protected. Possible solutions: If you have access to the VBA code in the document or project, unprotect the module, and then run the code again to view the specific error. If you do not have access to the VBA code in the document, then contact the document author to have the code in the hidden module updated.

• VMWare Network bug in multiple VMWare Workstation versions if using a hardcoded IP address

  I'm having a very tricky problem with some of my VM sessions being unable to reach the Internet or even ping the gateway. I have just set up a new VM Workstation (7) on a W2K8 64bit server (I'll be converting to ESXI 4 once I can find a decent book on it, so for the meanwhile I use workstation). I have imported a number of VM's and setup some new ones on the server.In short the problem with some of the VM's being unable to reach the Internet is that they can't reach the gateway. I've looking at a number of things and can pretty safely rule out the following: Switch, Router, DHCP Server, DNS, Client IP configuration, Routes and typos. The problem is that some of the new clients cannot reach the gateway if their IP address is hardcoded, they can't even ping it by IP address. That rules out DNS and DHCP. Now, if I allow them to get their IP address by DHCP they can reach the gateway and Internet without issue. The interesting thing on this, is that this behavior occurs even if I leave the DNS information hardcoded under TCP/IP settings. It doesn't work unless the IP and gateway are handed out by DHCP even though the same information IP info is being used by the host. Fundamentally from the standpoint of the clients, they are trying to reach the exact same gateway using the exact same IP information regardless of whether they are hardcoded or assigned by DHCP. Here's an example of one client. IP Address 192.168.7.66 - Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 - Gateway 192.168.7.254 - DNS1 192.168.7.44 - DNS2 192.168.7.254. The issue occurs across six different microsoft operating systems, Windows 7 and Windows 2008 variants all have the issue. My W2K3, XP, Vista and W98 clients all work without issue with hardcoded IP addresses. I have tried things like rearranging the DNS order, flushing DNS and so on. It's not a routing or switch issue as the clients can work just fine if they get their IP by DHCP. It's not a paramater issue as the exact same paramaters are handed out by DHCP as I plug in by hand. It's not a DNS issue as clients cant reach other clients even with IP addresses only. I have run a tracert to the gateway by IP address and it times out on the very first hop before failing on hop3 with destination host unreachable. If I get the IP address by DHCP the tracert finds the gateway (and Internet) without issue. I have read a few other posts online in forums talking about this problem randomly occuring over the years in other VM versions as well, so I suspect some kind of long standing bug. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Is it possibly a bug with Windows 7 and W2K clients under VM?
