• MVC-3 User-Image Management - Best Practices

  Hello Experts, Developing using MVC-3, Razor, C# Been searching around and cannot find advice I'm looking for. My site will contain user-uploaded images (possibly a high number). What is the best practice for managing these pictures (placement, breakdown into sub-folders, etc...)? Where do I place them that will prevent them from getting accidentally blown away if I republish my site periodically? If there are any good articles or blog posts, that would be helpful. Also, any advice/tips anyone wants to add would be great. Thanks for your time! Rob EDIT Also would like to know what people do to prevent hot linking.

• Affordable, Stable, ASP.NET MVC Hosting Exist?

  I'm using webhost4life shared hosting right now. They have a 99.99% up-time guarantee, but it is definitely not. Their support has been good when I do contact them, but it's just not stable. The site will just go down at random times for 5-10 minutes at a time. I know I'm on shared hosting, but I was hoping it would be more stable than it is. My app isn't at the point where it would need dedicated hosting yet, if the shared was stable enough. Any affordable hosting that you can vouch for (that supports ASP.NET MVC)?

• fluent nhibernate not caching queries in asp.net mvc

  I'm using a fluent nhibernate with asp.net mvc and I not seeing anything been cached when making queries against the database. I'm not currently using an L2 cache implementation. Should I see queries being cached without configuring an out of process L2 cache? Mapping are like this: Table("ApplicationCategories"); Not.LazyLoad(); Cache.ReadWrite().IncludeAll(); Id(x => x.Id); Map(x => x.Name).Not.Nullable(); Map(x => x.Description).Nullable(); Example Criteria: return session .CreateCriteria<ApplicationCategory>() .Add(Restrictions.Eq("Name", _name)) .SetCacheable(true); Everytime I make a request for an application cateogry by name it is hitting the database is this expected behaviour?

• How are you supposed to layout a page in VS2010 without using tables?

  I have been using .NET since beta and HTML since the days of HotDog pro & notepad, using table layout of course. I am FINALLY ready to use only div, li, CSS for the layout, but my question is, what is the proper way to layout pages in VS2010?   I am working in Visual Studio 2008, IIS7 and using asp.net MVC. I would like to know the best way to combine all of my Javascript files into one file to reduce the number of HTTP requests to the server. I have seen many articles on this subject but I'm not sure which one I should look at first (many of them are over a year old). Here are the things I would like to do: Combine my Javascript and css files Safely compress my Javascript files when I publish, but keep them uncompressed while I am debugging Cache my Css and Javascript files but allow them to refreshed with a hard refresh when they are updated without having to rename them.

• Really lost with OpenID and ASP.NET MVC

  I'm attempting to implement OpenID with ASP.NET MVC (Yeah, we haven't heard that one before I'm sure!) That really isn't the big problem, though. My huge problem is that I am exceedingly confused about how to do this alongside an application that will need to store a lot of information about the logged in users (profiles, histories, etc) It seems to me that OpenID takes away the site-centric logic and makes it, well, open. This is all well and good if you just make an authentication ticket to be seen as a 'validated' user - but in all seriousness I am completely lost. Is it possible to implement OpenID such that logging in with it will allow users to 'exist' on my own application as if they had gone through normal registration?

• how to integrate Zend Framework MVC with existing site

  Hi guys, So I'm slowly tackling OO and Zend Framework and their MVC process in particular. I have an existing website and web-based calendar application that was designed by me, but coded by a different person and done procedurally. I understand that it will be very difficult for my application to ever be completely OO without a full re-write, and I'm fine with that. I have a lot of updates and modifications I want to do in the future, so I'm wanting to start replacing some of the basic components (login, authentication. etc) now, and continue to learn as I go. Again, I'm really a newbie at programming and OO. What I'm wondering is if I'm wanting to incorporate the Framework, then would I just first drop my whole site into the /public folder of the Framework and then start pulling functionality out from there?

  I am fairly new to MVC but not sure exactly which Redirect... replaces the standard redirect used in WebForms ie the standard Response.Redirect() For instance, I need to redirect to other pages in a couple of scenarios: 1) WHen the user logs out (Forms signout in Action) I want to redirect to a login page 2) In a Controller or base Controller event eg Initialze, I want to redirect to another page (AbsoluteRootUrl + Controller + Action) It seems that multiple redirects get called in some cases which causes errors, something to do with the fact a page is already being redirected? How can cancel the current request and just redirect?

• ASP.NET MVC Routes Login/Logout Problem

  Hi Guys, Relatively new to ASP.NET MVC and little confused about how to do routing. My problem basically relates to "logged in" and "logged out routes" and having both as "/". i.e. I have home/index for logged out user which appears as "/" but this has got me confused as to how I can have home/home for logged in user and still have "/". I keep getting 127.0.0.1/home/home I could modify like 127.0.0.1/home - but I want it like "/". My confusion relates to the fact that the "/" [127.0.0.1/] is bound in the routes collection to home/index. Does anyone know how I can modify the routes dictionary (which will be binded ONCE at the start) so that the "/" can be shared for logged and non-logged users ? Thanks?

First they've added a form for creating a new dinner, with a bunch of textboxes delcared like: <%= Html.TextArea("Description") %> They then show two ways of binding form input to the model: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Create() { Dinner dinner = new Dinner(); UpdateModel(dinner); ... } or: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Create(Dinner dinner) { ... } Ok, great, that all looks really easy so far. Then a bit later on they say: It is important to always be paranoid about security when accepting any user input, and this is also true when binding objects to form input. You should be careful to always HTML encode any user-entered values to avoid HTML and JavaScript injection attacks Huh? MVC is managing the data binding for us. Where/how are you supposed to do the HTML encoding?

  I'm looking to turn off try blocks for a specific JSP page (though turning it off globally would be OK as well). From what I've gathered, it looks something like this: <jsp-param> <param-name>noTryBlocks</param-name> <param-value>true</param-value> </jsp-param> However, everywhere I see that sample it's for a weblogic.xml file. Does anybody know how I can set this JSP parameters for a Spring MVC application? web.xml? • is it posible to upload directly to remote server using SFTP on ASP.net MVC

  Hi! I am currently develope something using asp.net MVC, im still quite not experience with it so please help me out. I have a form for user to upload Video. The current ideal concept to upload to remote server is to Upload it to to the current server, then use FTP to push it to a remote server. For me, this is not quite fast since you have to upload to current server (Time x1) and then the current server push to new server (Time x2) so it's double the time. So my idea is to make user upload it to the current server, and WHILE user is uploading, the current server add the file to DB and also send the file to the remote server at the same time using SFTP... is it posible and are there any security hole in this concept?   Hi All, The problem: client needs a website to serve 10+ customers, each customer has 5-10 people they wish to grant access using login & user name, once "logged in" the user can download files specific to their company. The files will be uploaded to a directory under the customer name, and displayed as a list. Currently using membership for all of the users, it's just the "by customer" segmentation I'm wondering about. the question being under ASP.NET MVC what is the cleanest or simplest approach to solving the customer segmentation, trying to avoid customer membership provider so was going to use the roles to assign customer group. Thoughts appreciated.

  Hello, I am trying to work with an HTML.DropDownList in MVC and am not getting the expected return values. Here is my implementation for the selectList to bind to the drop down - IEnumerable<status> stat = _provider.GetAllStatuses(); Statuses = new SelectList(stat.ToList(), "id", "name", i.status.id); And here is my view - <%= Html.DropDownList("Status",Model.Statuses) %> I am getting an error when trying to run updatemodel in my controller. I then tried to individually set each object. It turns out that I am not getting a single int from the formvalue as I would expect to. Instead, I am getting a value like "5,10,2,3". I think this is coming from how I set up my selectlist, but I'm not exactly sure. Can anyone see an error in the way I am setting up this dd? Thanks for any help, and let me know if I can clarify anything.

• Log4net rollingfile appender skipping every other day in asp.net mvc app

  Hi, I've set up some log4net logging on an asp.net mvc application i've had running for a little over a month now. I've set up rolling file (and smtp) appender on it. The application is hit several thousand times a day - alot of actions are logged. On top of these a number of batch jobs are run as part of the application that also write to the log. Now - as i've been occupied with other work, i've not attended to this application much assuming things to be working based on my test setup. Unfortunately i discover that the rolling file appender on my production server seems to be skipping every other day. Ie i have logs : 10/4/2010, 10/4/2010.1, 10/4/2010.2, 12/4/2010, 12/4/2010.1 , 14/4/2010, 14/4/2010.1 etc. Any idea what could be causing this? It is absolutely impossible that there has no action on these odd days for the lifetime of the application. Cheers

  I'm a real beginner with MVC and my issue is this, I have a mdf database with multiple tables and I want to have a method return "ANY" table from the database and pass it to a aspx view.   Which MVC-framework is the best option (performance/ease of development) for a web application, that will have + 2 million visits per week. Basically the site is a search engine,but also there will be large amounts of xml parsing, and high db traffic. We are using Java, over Jboss 4.2.3x, with PG as DB, and Solr for the searches. We were thinking on code JSPs with taglibs, and Servlets, but we were feeling like there would be a better alternative, which don't know yet, as we are starting on the Java Web applications world.   looking at different sites, i see conflicting conventions. if you want to have links to images, other pages, js files, i have seen: URL.Content("~/scripts/myscript.js"); <a href="/scripts/msscripts.js"> <img src="../../content/stylesheet.css"> <img src="../content/stylesheet.css"> these all seem to work in asp.net mvc but it seems like there are all doing slightly different things. I am moving to a new webserver where they are changing from iis redirecting to isapi rewriting and i was told to make sure my links were done in a correct way or the site not work. Can someone clarify what the "correct" way is ?

• MVC Serve audio files while preventing direct linking using HttpResponseBase

  I need to be able to serve audio files to an mvc app while preventing direct access. Ideally the page would render with a player control so the user can start/stop the audio linked to the database record (audio files are in a folder not the db). I have a controller action like this: Response.Clear(); Response.ContentType = "audio/wav"; Response.TransmitFile(audioFilename); Response.End(); return Response; and the view uses the RenderAction method <% Html.RenderAction("ServeAudioFile"); %> this works but it won't display inline on the existing view, it opens a new page with just the media control. Am I totally barking up the wrong tree or is there a way to embed the response in the existing view? works exactly as I would like but I can't control access to the file.

  Hello, I'm just learning MVC so you could find my question rather strange... My Controller have access to different shared objects through Container object passed to Controller's constructor. To access shared objects I should do $this-container-db to access Database adapter or $this-container-memcache to access Memcached adapter. I want to know should I put View object into Container with shared objects or no? From one side it is really comfortable to take view from this container, but this way I couldn't create multiple Views instances (for example, every time I'm calling Controller's method from View I should have one more View instance). What is the solution? How should I pass View object into Controller and/or how should I create new View instances from Controller? Thank you!

  As the title suggests I have two models Products And Orders which are actually two table in my database and I have used a LINQ to SQL class to create there models. Now I wan to create a model named "OrderDetails" which will have properties from both the model like product name and id from product and Order number from orders something like this. An then I want to create a view from this custom model and from which I want to add "CRUD" operation. What should be my approach. And in many scenarios I may have to use data from more than 4 models.
