• Let&rsquo;s keep informed with &ldquo;Data Explorer&rdquo;

  At Pass Summit 2011 a new project was announced. It’s a Microsoft SQL Azure Lab and its codename is Microsoft “Data Explorer”. According to the official blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dataexplorer/), this new tool provides an innovative way to acquire new knowledge from the data that interest you. In a nutshell, Data Explorer allows you to combine data from multiple sources, to publish and share the result. In addition, you can generate data streams in the RESTful open format (Open Data Protocol), and they can then be used by other applications. Nonetheless we can still use Excel or PowerPivot to analyze the results. Sources can be varied: Excel spreadsheets, text files, databases, Windows Azure Marketplace, etc.. For those who are not familiar with this resource, I strongly suggest you to keep an eye on the data services available to the Marketplace: https://datamarket.azure.com/browse/Data To tell the truth, as I read the above blog post, I was tempted to think of the Data Explorer as a "SSIS on Azure" addressed to the Power User. In fact, reading the response from Tim Mallalieu (Group Program Manager of Data Explorer) to the comment made to his post, I had a positive response to my first impression: “…we originally thinking of ourselves as Self-Service ETL. As we talked to more folks and started partnering with other teams we realized that would be an area that we can add value but that there were more opportunities emerging.” The typical operations of the ETL phase ( processing and organization of data in different formats) can be obtained thanks to Data Explorer Mashup. The question that remains is always the same: having in a company more Power User will implicitly mean having different data models representing the same reality. • How to find the process(es) which are hogging the machine

  Scenario: All of a sudden, my computer feels sluggish. Mouse moves but windows take ages to open, etc. uptime says the load is 7.69 and raising. What is the fastest way to find out which process(es) are the cause of the load? Now, "top" and similar tools isn't the answer because they either show CPU or memory usage but not both at the same time. What I need is the single command which I might be able to type as it happens - something that will figure out any of System is trying to swap 8GB of RAM to disk because process X ... or process X seeks all over the disk or process X uses 400% CPU" So what I'm looking for is iostat, htop/atop and similar tools run into one with an output like this: 1235 cp - Disk trashing 87 chrome - Uses 2&nbsp;GB of RAM 137 nfs_bench - Uses 95% of the network bandwidth I don't want a tool that gives me some numbers which I can analyze but a tool that tells me exactly which process causes the current load. Assume that the user in front of the keyboard barely knows how to write "process", but the user is quickly overwhelmed when it comes to "resident size", "virtual memory" or "process life cycle". My argument goes like this: A user notices a problem. There can be thousands of reasons ... well, almost :-) The user wants to know the source of the problem. The current solutions give me lots of numbers, and I need to know what these numbers mean. What I'm looking for is a meta tool. 99% of the data is irrelevant to the problem. So what the tool should do is look for processes which hog some resource and list only those along with "this process needs a lot of CPU, this produces many IRQs, this process allocates a lot of RAM (and it's still growing)". This will be a relatively short list. It will be much more simple for someone new to this to locate the culprit from this list than from the output of, say, htop which gives me about 5000 numbers but requires me to fold multi-threaded processes myself (I have 50 lines which say VIRT 2750M but only 16 GB of RAM - the machine ought to swap itself to death but of course, this is a misinterpretation of the data that can happen quickly).

  I am thinking about rolling out a very stripped down version of release management for some PHP apps I have running. Essentially the plan is to store each release in /home/release/1.x etc (exported from a tag in SVN) and then do a symlink to /live_folder and change the document root in the apache config. I don't have a problem with setting all this up (I've actually got it working at the moment), however I'm a developer with just basic knowledge of the server admin side of things. Is there anything I need to be aware of from a security or performance perspective when using this method of release management? Thanks

• Windows 2008 R2 on ESXi 4.1 cpu utilization kernel high

  I have a Win2k8 guest running on ESXi 4.1. The host has 12 cores and the problem happens even if the guest is the only VM on the host. We have 4 cores dedicated to the guest. We noticed that network starts chocking when the CPU load goes up. After some testing we noticed that when running a simple CPU hogging tool set up to run 3 threads at 100% the regular CPU load goes to 75% like it should and the "kernel times" graph in task manager goes up to 25%. My intuition tells me that the network problem and kernel times problem are the same. This is confirmed by another similar VM we created on the same host which doesn't have either of the problems. VMWare tools are obviously installed. The nic is e1000. What else can we do to troubleshoot this?

  I have a series of virtual servers. I'm running a command to login to each one and take a look at the load averages using uptime. What's the best way to work out if load values represent overloading? I'm running on rackspace cloud, so the servers have burst capability and can be all different sizes. I'm a little stumped on how to come up with a consistent way of figuring out when I need to spin up new servers. I can do things like estimate the jobs running on each one, but I'd like a system that runs a little closer to the real resource use available on each instance, as it obviously varies quite a bit! Help greatly appreciated!

I want matlab to download the historical data for last 5 years for each stock ticker into a separate xls spreadsheet and save it in a given directory with title of the sheet = ticker. So that means i want a code that will create and save 500 tickers worth of data in 500 separate spreadhseets :) can anyone help or direct?

  I have an app which, for good reasons, can only be debugged on a device. I'm using Core Data for the first time, and I'd like to be able to easily inspect the records that are stored by the app on the device. I imagine that Core Data is by default backed by SQLite on the iPhone, so this question might be as simple as asking: "What's the easiest way to extract the SQLite database for an app installed by Xcode without jailbreaking it?" Any experience someone could lend regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

• Vmware peaks NFS load every 30 seconds

  We were troubleshooting a performance problem on one of our storage servers and after investigating almost everything in sight we saw that every 30 seconds, Vmware would go from 10k IOPS (NFS) to 30k, 50k, 100k or whatever the server would handle. Most of it were reads. What could cause this raise in NFS operations per second every 30 seconds? The virtual machines are managed by external customers and there isn't much in common between them. While breaking utilization down by filename, we discovered 5-10 virtual machines that contributed more to those peaks but it still doesn't explain why every 30 seconds. There are no other peaks outside that 30 sec period (ie. it stays in an almost constant average). Is there an NFS tweak in Vmware to change that 30 second period? If that's really necessary, we would like to introduce some variation so all that workload isn't dropped all at once. It's causing NFS timeout on the ESX 3.5/4.0 hosts when the storage gets overloaded.

• Is putting the javascript before the closing body tag okay on an asp.net website?

  I pretty much stated what I have to ask. But is taking all of your external .js files and putting them before the closing body tag on your master pages okay on an asp.net website? I'm just going off of what yslow and google speed have been showing. I can't combine these javascripts, so I'm trying to load them "after page load", but doing so makes them useless; some of my jquery things don't work. I moved my .js files above the opening body tag, and they work. What am I doing wrong? And what could I do to load my .js files after page load? Thanks for any advice anybody can offer!
