  • What's a reliable and practical way to protect software with a user license ?

    - by Frank
    I know software companies use licenses to protect their softwares, but I also know there are keygen programs to bypass them. I'm a Java developer, if I put my program online for sale, what's a reliable and practical way to protect it ? How about something like this, would it work ? <1> I use ProGuard to protect the source code. <2> Sign the executable Jar file. <3> Since my Java program only need to work on PC [I need to use JDIC in it], I wrap the final executable Jar into an .exe file which makes it harder to decompile. <4> When a user first downloads and runs my app, it checks for a Pass file on his PC. <5> If the Pass file doesn't exist, run the app in demo mode, exits in 5 minutes. <6> When demo exits a panel opens with a "Buy Now" button. This demo mode repeats forever unless step <7> happens. <7> If user clicks the "Buy Now" button, he fills out a detailed form [name, phone, email ...], presses a "Verify Info" button to save the form to a Pass file, leaving license Key # field empty in this newly generated Pass file. <8> Pressing "Verify Info" button will take him to a html form pre-filled with his info to verify what he is buying, also hidden in the form's input filed is a license Key number. He can now press a "Pay Now" button to goto Paypal to finish the process. <9> The hidden license Key # will be passed to Paypal as product Id info and emailed to me. <10> After I got the payment and Paypal email, I'll add the license Key # to a valid license Key list, and put it on my site, only I know the url. The list is updated hourly. <11> Few hours later when the user runs the app again, it can find the Pass file on his PC, but the license Key # value is empty, so it goes to the valid list url to see if its license Key # is on the list, if so, write the license Key # into the Pass file, and the next time it starts again, it will find the valid license Key # and start in purchased mode without exiting in 5 minutes. <12> If it can't find its license Key # on the list from my url, run in demo mode. <13> In order to prevent a user from copying and using another paid user's valid Pass file, the license Key # is unique to each PC [I'm trying to find how], so a valid Pass file only works on one PC. Only after a user has paid will Paypal email me the valid license Key # with his payment. <14> The Id checking goes like this : Use the CPU ID : "CPU_01-02-ABC" for example, encrypt it to the result ID : "XeR5TY67rgf", and compare it to the list on my url, if "XeR5TY67rgf" is not on my valid user list, run in demo mode. If it exists write "XeR5TY67rgf" into the Pass File license field. In order to get a unique license Key, can I use his PC's CPU Id ? Or something unique and useful [ relatively less likely to change ]. If so let's say this CPU ID is "CPU_01-02-ABC", I can encrypt it to something like "XeR5TY67rgf", and pass it to Paypal as product Id in the hidden html form field, then I'll get it from Paypal's email notification, and add it to the valid license Key # list on the url. So, even if a hacker knows it uses CPU Id, he can't write it into the Pass file field, because only encrypted Ids are valid Ids. And only my program knows how to generate the encrypted Ids. And even if another hacker knows the encrypted Id is hidden in the html form input field, as long as it's not on my url list, it's still invalid. Can anyone find any flaw in the above system ? Is it practical ? And most importantly how do I get hold of this unique ID that can represent a user's PC ? Frank

  • Need help on Coda slider tabs to move inside an overflow:hidden div

    - by Reden
    I'm not too good at javascript. and hope I can get a bit of help. I'm using Coda Slider 2.0, and have designed it to where the tabs are another slider to the right of the main slider, and each item. Basically like this mootools plugin http://landofcoder.com/demo/mootool/lofslidernews/index2.1.html Problem is the items will not scroll. How do I make the items (or tabs to the right) scroll down as the slider rotates? Otherwise the slider will show the 4th slide but not scroll to the 4th item on the right, but Thanks everyone. Here is the Coda-Slider plugin: // when the DOM is ready... $(document).ready(function () { var $panels = $('#slider .scrollContainer > div'); var $container = $('#slider .scrollContainer'); // if false, we'll float all the panels left and fix the width // of the container var horizontal = true; // float the panels left if we're going horizontal if (horizontal) { $panels.css({ 'float' : 'left', 'position' : 'relative' // IE fix to ensure overflow is hidden }); // calculate a new width for the container (so it holds all panels) $container.css('width', $panels[0].offsetWidth * $panels.length); } // collect the scroll object, at the same time apply the hidden overflow // to remove the default scrollbars that will appear var $scroll = $('#slider .scroll').css('overflow', 'hidden'); // apply our left + right buttons $scroll .before('<img class="scrollButtons left" src="images/scroll_left.png" />') .after('<img class="scrollButtons right" src="images/scroll_right.png" />'); // handle nav selection function selectNav() { $(this) .parents('ul:first') .find('a') .removeClass('selected') .end() .end() .addClass('selected'); } $('#slider .navigation').find('a').click(selectNav); // go find the navigation link that has this target and select the nav function trigger(data) { var el = $('#slider .navigation').find('a[href$="' + data.id + '"]').get(0); selectNav.call(el); } if (window.location.hash) { trigger({ id : window.location.hash.substr(1) }); } else { $('ul.navigation a:first').click(); } // offset is used to move to *exactly* the right place, since I'm using // padding on my example, I need to subtract the amount of padding to // the offset. Try removing this to get a good idea of the effect var offset = parseInt((horizontal ? $container.css('paddingTop') : $container.css('paddingLeft')) || 0) * -1; var scrollOptions = { target: $scroll, // the element that has the overflow // can be a selector which will be relative to the target items: $panels, navigation: '.navigation a', // selectors are NOT relative to document, i.e. make sure they're unique prev: 'img.left', next: 'img.right', // allow the scroll effect to run both directions axis: 'xy', onAfter: trigger, // our final callback offset: offset, // duration of the sliding effect duration: 500, // easing - can be used with the easing plugin: // http://gsgd.co.uk/sandbox/jquery/easing/ easing: 'swing' }; // apply serialScroll to the slider - we chose this plugin because it // supports// the indexed next and previous scroll along with hooking // in to our navigation. $('#slider').serialScroll(scrollOptions); // now apply localScroll to hook any other arbitrary links to trigger // the effect $.localScroll(scrollOptions); // finally, if the URL has a hash, move the slider in to position, // setting the duration to 1 because I don't want it to scroll in the // very first page load. • How do encrypt a long or int using the Bouncy Castle crypto routines for BlackBerry?

    - by DanG
    How do encrypt/decrypt a long or int using the Bouncy Castle crypto routines for BlackBerry? I know how to encrypt/decrypt a String. I can encrypt a long but can't get a long to decrypt properly. Some of this is poorly done, but I'm just trying stuff out at the moment. • Hibernate error: cannot resolve table

    - by Roman
    I'm trying to make work the example from hibernate reference. I've got simple table Pupil with id, name and age fields. I've created correct (as I think) java-class for it according to all java-beans rules. I've created configuration file - hibernate.cfg.xml, just like in the example from reference. I've created hibernate mapping for one class Pupil, and here is the error occured. <hibernate-mapping> <class name="Pupil" table="pupils"> ... </class> </hibernate-mapping> table="pupils" is red in my IDE and I see message "cannot resolve table pupils". I've also founded very strange note in reference which says that most users fail with the same problem trying to run the example. Ah.. I'm very angry with this example.. IMHO if authors know that there is such problem they should add some information about it. But, how should I fix it? I don't want to deal with Ant here and with other instruments used in example. I'm using MySql 5.0, but I think it doesn't matter. UPD: source code Pupil.java - my persistent class package domain; public class Pupil { private Integer id; private String name; private Integer age; protected Pupil () { } public Pupil (String name, int age) { this.age = age; this.name = name; } public Integer getId () { return id; } public void setId (Integer id) { this.id = id; } public String getName () { return name; } public void setName (String name) { this.name = name; } public Integer getAge () { return age; } public void setAge (Integer age) { this.age = age; } public String toString () { return "Pupil [ name = " + name + ", age = " + age + " ]"; } } Pupil.hbm.xml is mapping for this class <?xml version="1.0"?> <!DOCTYPE hibernate-mapping PUBLIC "-//Hibernate/Hibernate Mapping DTD 3.0//EN" "http://hibernate.sourceforge.net/hibernate-mapping-3.0.dtd"> <hibernate-mapping package="domain" > <class name="Pupil" table="pupils"> <id name="id"> <generator class="native" /> </id> <property name="name" not-null="true"/> <property name="age"/> </class> </hibernate-mapping> hibernate.cfg.xml - configuration for hibernate <hibernate-configuration> <session-factory> <!-- Database connection settings --> <property name="connection.driver_class">com.mysql.jdbc.Driver</property> <property name="connection.url">jdbc:mysql://localhost/hbm_test</property> <property name="connection.username">root</property> <property name="connection.password">root</property> <property name="connection.pool_size">1</property> <property name="dialect">org.hibernate.dialect.MySQL5Dialect</property> <property name="current_session_context_class">thread</property> <property name="show_sql">true</property> <mapping resource="domain/Pupil.hbm.xml"/> </session-factory> </hibernate-configuration> HibernateUtils.java package utils; import org.hibernate.SessionFactory; import org.hibernate.HibernateException; import org.hibernate.cfg.Configuration; public class HibernateUtils { private static final SessionFactory sessionFactory; static { try { sessionFactory = new Configuration ().configure ().buildSessionFactory (); } catch (HibernateException he) { System.err.println (he); throw new ExceptionInInitializerError (he); } } public static SessionFactory getSessionFactory () { return sessionFactory; } } Runner.java - class for testing hibernate import org.hibernate.Session; import java.util.*; import utils.HibernateUtils; import domain.Pupil; public class Runner { public static void main (String[] args) { Session s = HibernateUtils.getSessionFactory ().getCurrentSession (); s.beginTransaction (); List pups = s.createQuery ("from Pupil").list (); for (Object obj : pups) { System.out.println (obj); } s.getTransaction ().commit (); HibernateUtils.getSessionFactory ().close (); } } My libs: antlr-2.7.6.jar, asm.jar, asm-attrs.jar, cglib-2.1.3.jar, commons-collections-2.1.1.jar, commons-logging-1.0.4.jar, dom4j-1.6.1.jar, hibernate3.jar, jta.jar, log4j-1.2.11.jar, mysql-connector-java-5.1.7-bin.jar Compile error: cannot resolve table pupils

  • Error using CreateFileMapping - C

    - by Jamie Keeling
    Hello, I am using the tutorial on this MSDN link to implement a way of transferring data from one process to another. Although I was advised in an earlier question to use the Pipe methods, due to certain constraints I have no choice but to use the CreateFileMapping method. Now, i've succesfully managed to make two seperate window form projects within the same solution and by editing some properties both of the forms load at the same time. Furthermore I have managed to implement the code given in the MSDN sample into the first (Producer) and second (Consumer) program without any compilation errors. The problem I am having now is when I run the first program and try to create the handle to the mapped file, I am given an error saying it was unsuccesful and I do not understand why this is happening. I have added both the Producer and Consumer code files to demonstrate what I am trying to do. Producer: #include <windows.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <conio.h> //File header definitions #define IDM_FILE_ROLLDICE 1 #define IDM_FILE_QUIT 2 #define BUF_SIZE 256 TCHAR szName[]=TEXT("Global\\MyFileMappingObject"); TCHAR szMsg[]=TEXT("Message from first process!"); void AddMenus(HWND); LRESULT CALLBACK WindowFunc(HWND, UINT, WPARAM, LPARAM); ////Standard windows stuff - omitted to save space. ////////////////////// // WINDOWS FUNCTION // ////////////////////// LRESULT CALLBACK WindowFunc(HWND hMainWindow, UINT message, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam) { WCHAR buffer[256]; LPCTSTR pBuf; struct DiceData storage; HANDLE hMapFile; switch(message) { case WM_CREATE: { // Create Menus AddMenus(hMainWindow); } break; case WM_COMMAND: // Intercept menu choices switch(LOWORD(wParam)) { case IDM_FILE_ROLLDICE: { //Roll dice and store results in variable //storage = RollDice(); ////Copy results to buffer //swprintf(buffer,255,L"Dice 1: %d, Dice 2: %d",storage.dice1,storage.dice2); ////Show via message box //MessageBox(hMainWindow,buffer,L"Dice Result",MB_OK); hMapFile = CreateFileMapping( (HANDLE)0xFFFFFFFF, // use paging file NULL, // default security PAGE_READWRITE, // read/write access 0, // maximum object size (high-order DWORD) BUF_SIZE, // maximum object size (low-order DWORD) szName); // name of mapping object if (hMapFile == NULL) { MessageBox(hMainWindow,L"Could not create file mapping object",L"Error",NULL); return 1; } pBuf = (LPTSTR) MapViewOfFile(hMapFile, // handle to map object FILE_MAP_ALL_ACCESS, // read/write permission 0, 0, BUF_SIZE); if (pBuf == NULL) { MessageBox(hMainWindow,L"Could not map view of file",L"Error",NULL); CloseHandle(hMapFile); return 1; } CopyMemory((PVOID)pBuf, szMsg, (_tcslen(szMsg) * sizeof(TCHAR))); _getch(); UnmapViewOfFile(pBuf); CloseHandle(hMapFile); } break; case IDM_FILE_QUIT: SendMessage(hMainWindow, WM_CLOSE, 0, 0); break; } break; case WM_DESTROY: PostQuitMessage(0); break; } return DefWindowProc(hMainWindow, message, wParam, lParam); } // //Setup menus // Consumer: #include <windows.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <conio.h> //File header definitions #define IDM_FILE_QUIT 1 #define IDM_FILE_POLL 2 #define BUF_SIZE 256 TCHAR szName[]=TEXT("Global\\MyFileMappingObject"); //Prototypes void AddMenus(HWND); LRESULT CALLBACK WindowFunc(HWND, UINT, WPARAM, LPARAM); //More standard windows creation, again omitted. ////////////////////// // WINDOWS FUNCTION // ////////////////////// LRESULT CALLBACK WindowFunc(HWND hMainWindow, UINT message, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam) { HANDLE hMapFile; LPCTSTR pBuf; switch(message) { case WM_CREATE: { // Create Menus AddMenus(hMainWindow); break; } case WM_COMMAND: { // Intercept menu choices switch(LOWORD(wParam)) { case IDM_FILE_POLL: { hMapFile = OpenFileMapping( FILE_MAP_ALL_ACCESS, // read/write access FALSE, // do not inherit the name szName); // name of mapping object if (hMapFile == NULL) { MessageBox(hMainWindow,L"Could not open file mapping object",L"Error",NULL); return 1; } pBuf = (LPTSTR) MapViewOfFile(hMapFile, // handle to map object FILE_MAP_ALL_ACCESS, // read/write permission 0, 0, BUF_SIZE); if (pBuf == NULL) { MessageBox(hMainWindow,L"Could not map view of file",L"Error",NULL); CloseHandle(hMapFile); return 1; } MessageBox(NULL, pBuf, TEXT("Process2"), MB_OK); UnmapViewOfFile(pBuf); CloseHandle(hMapFile); break; } case IDM_FILE_QUIT: SendMessage(hMainWindow, WM_CLOSE, 0, 0); break; } break; } case WM_DESTROY: { PostQuitMessage(0); break; } } return DefWindowProc(hMainWindow, message, wParam, lParam); } // //Setup menus // It's by no means tidy and final but it's just a start, thanks for any help.

  • adjust selected File to FileFilter in a JFileChooser

    - by amarillion
    I'm writing a diagram editor in java. This app has the option to export to various standard image formats such as .jpg, .png etc. When the user clicks File-Export, you get a JFileChooser which has a number of FileFilters in it, for .jpg, .png etc. Now here is my question: Is there a way to have the extension of the default adjust to the selected file filter? E.g. if the document is named "lolcat" then the default option should be "lolcat.png" when the png filter is selected, and when the user selects the jpg file filter, the default should change to "lolcat.jpg" automatically. Is this possible? How can I do it? edit: Based on the answer below, I wrote some code. But it doesn't quite work yet. I've added a propertyChangeListener to the FILE_FILTER_CHANGED_PROPERTY, but it seems that within this method getSelectedFile() returns null. Here is the code. package nl.helixsoft; import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.awt.event.ActionListener; import java.beans.PropertyChangeEvent; import java.beans.PropertyChangeListener; import java.io.File; import java.util.ArrayList; import java.util.List; import javax.swing.JButton; import javax.swing.JFileChooser; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.filechooser.FileFilter; public class JFileChooserTest { public class SimpleFileFilter extends FileFilter { private String desc; private List<String> extensions; private boolean showDirectories; /** * @param name example: "Data files" * @param glob example: "*.txt|*.csv" */ public SimpleFileFilter (String name, String globs) { extensions = new ArrayList<String>(); for (String glob : globs.split("\\|")) { if (!glob.startsWith("*.")) throw new IllegalArgumentException("expected list of globs like \"*.txt|*.csv\""); // cut off "*" // store only lower case (make comparison case insensitive) extensions.add (glob.substring(1).toLowerCase()); } desc = name + " (" + globs + ")"; } public SimpleFileFilter(String name, String globs, boolean showDirectories) { this(name, globs); this.showDirectories = showDirectories; } @Override public boolean accept(File file) { if(showDirectories && file.isDirectory()) { return true; } String fileName = file.toString().toLowerCase(); for (String extension : extensions) { if (fileName.endsWith (extension)) { return true; } } return false; } @Override public String getDescription() { return desc; } /** * @return includes '.' */ public String getFirstExtension() { return extensions.get(0); } } void export() { String documentTitle = "lolcat"; final JFileChooser jfc = new JFileChooser(); jfc.setDialogTitle("Export"); jfc.setDialogType(JFileChooser.SAVE_DIALOG); jfc.setSelectedFile(new File (documentTitle)); jfc.addChoosableFileFilter(new SimpleFileFilter("JPEG", "*.jpg")); jfc.addChoosableFileFilter(new SimpleFileFilter("PNG", "*.png")); jfc.addPropertyChangeListener(JFileChooser.FILE_FILTER_CHANGED_PROPERTY, new PropertyChangeListener() { public void propertyChange(PropertyChangeEvent arg0) { System.out.println ("Property changed"); String extold = null; String extnew = null; if (arg0.getOldValue() == null || !(arg0.getOldValue() instanceof SimpleFileFilter)) return; if (arg0.getNewValue() == null || !(arg0.getNewValue() instanceof SimpleFileFilter)) return; SimpleFileFilter oldValue = ((SimpleFileFilter)arg0.getOldValue()); SimpleFileFilter newValue = ((SimpleFileFilter)arg0.getNewValue()); extold = oldValue.getFirstExtension(); extnew = newValue.getFirstExtension(); String filename = "" + jfc.getSelectedFile(); System.out.println ("file: " + filename + " old: " + extold + ", new: " + extnew); if (filename.endsWith(extold)) { filename.replace(extold, extnew); } else { filename += extnew; } jfc.setSelectedFile(new File (filename)); } }); jfc.showDialog(frame, "export"); } JFrame frame; void run() { frame = new JFrame(); JButton btn = new JButton ("export"); frame.add (btn); btn.addActionListener (new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae) { export(); } }); frame.setSize (300, 300); frame.pack(); frame.setVisible(true); } public static void main(String[] args) { javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { JFileChooserTest x = new JFileChooserTest(); x.run(); } }); } }

  • JSF 2.1 Spring 3.0 Integration

    I'm trying to make very simple Spring 3 + JSF2.1 integration according to examples I googled in the web. So here is my code: My HTML submitted to actionController.actionSubmitted() method: <h:form> <h:message for="textPanel" style="color:red;" /> <h:panelGrid columns="3" rows="5" id="textPanel"> //all my bean prperties mapped to HTML code. </h:panelGrid> <h:commandButton value="Submit" action="#{actionController.actionSubmitted}" /> </h:form> now the Action Controller itself: @ManagedBean(name="actionController") @SessionScoped public class ActionController implements Serializable{ @ManagedProperty(value="#{user}") User user; @ManagedProperty(value="#{mailService}") MailService mailService; public void setMailService(MailService mailService) { this.mailService = mailService; } public void setUser(User user) { this.user = user; } private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; public ActionController() {} public String actionSubmitted(){ System.out.println(user.getEmail()); mailService.sendUserMail(user); return "success"; } } Now my bean Spring: public interface MailService { void sendUserMail(User user); } public class MailServiceImpl implements MailService{ @Override public void sendUserMail(User user) { System.out.println("Mail to "+user.getEmail()+" sent." ); } } This is my web.xml <listener> <listener-class> org.springframework.web.context.ContextLoaderListener </listener-class> </listener> <listener> <listener-class> org.springframework.web.context.request.RequestContextListener </listener-class> </listener> <!-- Welcome page --> <welcome-file-list> <welcome-file>index.xhtml</welcome-file> </welcome-file-list> <!-- JSF mapping --> <servlet> <servlet-name>Faces Servlet</servlet-name> <servlet-class>javax.faces.webapp.FacesServlet</servlet-class> <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup> </servlet> my applicationContext.xml <beans xmlns="http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans/spring-beans-3.0.xsd"> <bean id="mailService" class="com.vanilla.jsf.services.MailServiceImpl"> </bean> </beans> my faces-config.xml is the following: <application> <el-resolver> org.springframework.web.jsf.el.SpringBeanFacesELResolver </el-resolver> <message-bundle> com.vanilla.jsf.validators.MyMessages </message-bundle> </application> <managed-bean> <managed-bean-name>actionController</managed-bean-name> <managed-bean-class>com.vanilla.jsf.controllers.ActionController</managed-bean-class> <managed-bean-scope>session</managed-bean-scope> <managed-property> <property-name>mailService</property-name> <value>#{mailService}</value> </managed-property> </managed-bean> <navigation-rule> <from-view-id>index.xhtml</from-view-id> <navigation-case> <from-action>#{actionController.actionSubmitted}</from-action> <from-outcome>success</from-outcome> <to-view-id>submitted.xhtml</to-view-id> <redirect /> </navigation-case> </navigation-rule> My Problem is that I'm getting NullPointerExeption because my mailService Spring bean is null. public String actionSubmitted(){ System.out.println(user.getEmail()); //mailService is null Getting NullPointerException mailService.sendUserMail(user); return "success"; }

  • STORED PROCEDURE working in my local test machine cannot be created in production environment.

    - by Marcos Buarque
    Hi, I have an SQL CREATE PROCEDURE statement that runs perfectly in my local SQL Server, but cannot be recreated in production environment. The error message I get in production is Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Incorrect syntax near '='. It is a pretty big query and I don't want to annoy StackOverflow users, but I simply can't find a solution. If only you could point me out what settings I could check in the production server in order to enable running the code... I must be using some kind of syntax or something that is conflicting with some setting in production. This PROCEDURE was already registered in production before, but when I ran a DROP - CREATE PROCEDURE today, the server was able to drop the procedure, but not to recreate it. I will paste the code below. Thank you! =============== USE [Enorway] GO /****** Object: StoredProcedure [dbo].[Spel_CM_ChartsUsersTotals] Script Date: 03/17/2010 11:59:57 ******/ SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO CREATE PROC [dbo].[Spel_CM_ChartsUsersTotals] @IdGroup int, @IdAssessment int, @UserId int AS SET NOCOUNT ON DECLARE @RequiredColor varchar(6) SET @RequiredColor = '3333cc' DECLARE @ManagersColor varchar(6) SET @ManagersColor = '993300' DECLARE @GroupColor varchar(6) SET @GroupColor = 'ff0000' DECLARE @SelfColor varchar(6) SET @SelfColor = '336600' DECLARE @TeamColor varchar(6) SET @TeamColor = '993399' DECLARE @intMyCounter tinyint DECLARE @intManagersPosition tinyint DECLARE @intGroupPosition tinyint DECLARE @intSelfPosition tinyint DECLARE @intTeamPosition tinyint SET @intMyCounter = 1 -- Table that will hold the subtotals... • spring-nullpointerexception- cant access autowired annotated service (or dao) in a no-annotations class

    - by user286806
    I have this problem that I cannot fix. From my @Controller, i can easily access my autowired @Service class and play with it no problem. But when I do that from a separate class without annotations, it gives me a NullPointerException. My Controller (works)- @Controller public class UserController { @Autowired UserService userService;... My separate Java class (not working)- public final class UsersManagementUtil { @Autowired UserService userService; or @Autowired UserDao userDao; userService or userDao are always null! Was just trying if any one of them works. My component scan setting has the root level package set for scanning so that should be OK. my servlet context - <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <beans xmlns="http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:context="http://www.springframework.org/schema/context" xmlns:tx="http://www.springframework.org/schema/tx" xsi:schemaLocation=" http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans/spring-beans-3.0.xsd http://www.springframework.org/schema/context http://www.springframework.org/schema/context/spring-context-3.0.xsd http://www.springframework.org/schema/tx http://www.springframework.org/schema/tx/spring-tx-3.0.xsd"> <!-- the application context definition for the springapp DispatcherServlet --> <!-- Enable annotation driven controllers, validation etc... --> <context:property-placeholder location="classpath:jdbc.properties" /> <context:component-scan base-package="x" /> <tx:annotation-driven transaction-manager="hibernateTransactionManager" /> <!-- package shortended --> <bean id="messageSource" class="o.s.c.s.ReloadableResourceBundleMessageSource"> <property name="basename" value="/WEB-INF/messages" /> </bean> <bean id="dataSource" class="org.springframework.jdbc.datasource.DriverManagerDataSource"> <property name="driverClassName" value="${database.driver}" /> <property name="url" value="${database.url}" /> <property name="username" value="${database.user}" /> <property name="password" value="${database.password}" /> </bean> <!-- package shortened --> <bean id="viewResolver" class="o.s.w.s.v.InternalResourceViewResolver"> <property name="prefix"> <value>/</value> </property> <property name="suffix"> <value>.jsp</value> </property> <property name="order"> <value>0</value> </property> </bean> <!-- package shortened --> <bean id="sessionFactory" class="o.s.o.h3.a.AnnotationSessionFactoryBean"> <property name="dataSource" ref="dataSource" /> <property name="annotatedClasses"> <list> <value>orion.core.models.Question</value> <value>orion.core.models.User</value> <value>orion.core.models.Space</value> <value>orion.core.models.UserSkill</value> <value>orion.core.models.Question</value> <value>orion.core.models.Rating</value> </list> </property> <property name="hibernateProperties"> <props> <prop key="hibernate.dialect">${hibernate.dialect}</prop> <prop key="hibernate.show_sql">${hibernate.show_sql}</prop> <prop key="hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto">${hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto}</prop> </props> </property> </bean> <bean id="hibernateTransactionManager" class="org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.HibernateTransactionManager"> <property name="sessionFactory" ref="sessionFactory" /> </bean> Any clue?

  • Yet another C# Deadlock Debugging Question

    - by Roo
    Hi All, I have a multi-threaded application build in C# using VS2010 Professional. It's quite a large application and we've experienced the classing GUI cross-threading and deadlock issues before, but in the past month we've noticed the appears to lock up when left idle for around 20-30 minutes. The application is irresponsive and although it will repaint itself when other windows are dragged in front of the application and over it, the GUI still appears to be locked... interstingly (unlike if the GUI thread is being used for a considerable amount of time) the Close, Maximise and minimise buttons are also irresponsive and when clicked the little (Not Responding...) text is not displayed in the title of the application i.e. Windows still seems to think it's running fine. If I break/pause the application using the debugger, and view the threads that are running. There are 3 threads of our managed code that are running, and a few other worker threads whom the source code cannot be displayed for. The 3 threads that run are: The main/GUI thread A thread that loops indefinitely A thread that loops indefinitely If I step into threads 2 and 3, they appear to be looping correctly. They do not share locks (even with the main GUI thread) and they are not using the GUI thread at all. When stepping into the main/GUI thread however, it's broken on Application.Run... This problem screams deadlock to me, but what I don't understand is if it's deadlock, why can't I see the line of code the main/GUI thread is hanging on? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Let me know if you need more information... Cheers, Roo -----------------------------------------------------SOLUTION-------------------------------------------------- Okay, so the problem is now solved. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! Much appreciated! I've marked the answer that solved my initial problem of determining where on the main/UI thread the application hangs (I handn't turned off the "Enable Just My Code" option). The overall issue I was experiencing was indeed Deadlock, however. After obtaining the call-stack and popping the top half of it into Google I came across this which explains exactly what I was experiencing... http://timl.net/ This references a lovely guide to debugging the issue... http://www.aaronlerch.com/blog/2008/12/15/debugging-ui/ This identified a control I was constructing off the GUI thread. I did know this, however, and was marshalling calls correctly, but what I didn't realise was that behind the scenes this Control was subscribing to an event or set of events that are triggered when e.g. a Windows session is unlocked or the screensaver exits. These calls are always made on the main/UI thread and were blocking when it saw the call was made on the incorrect thread. Kim explains in more detail here... http://krgreenlee.blogspot.com/2007/09/onuserpreferencechanged-hang.html In the end I found an alternative solution which did not require this Control off the main/UI thread. That appears to have solved the problem and the application no longer hangs. I hope this helps anyone who's confronted by a similar problem. Thanks again to everyone on here who helped! (and indirectly, the delightful bloggers I've referenced above!) Roo -----------------------------------------------------SOLUTION II-------------------------------------------------- Aren't threading issues delightful...you think you've solved it, and a month down the line it pops back up again. I still believe the solution above resolved an issue that would cause simillar behaviour, but we encountered the problem again. As we spent a while debugging this, I thought I'd update this question with our (hopefully) final solution: The problem appears to have been a bug in the Infragistics components in the WinForms 2010.1 release (no hot fixes). We had been running from around the time the freeze issue appeared (but had also added a bunch of other stuff too). After upgrading to WinForms 2010.3, we've yet to reproduce the issue (deja vu). See my question here for a bit more information: 'http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4077822/net-4-0-and-the-dreaded-onuserpreferencechanged-hang'. Hans has given a nice summary of the general issue. I hope this adds a little to the suggestions/information surrounding the nutorious OnUserPreferenceChanged Hang (or whatever you'd like to call it). Cheers, Roo

  • Problem creating calculations 'engine' in two class java calculator

    - by tokee
    i have hit a brick wall whilst attempting to create a two class java calculator but have been unsuccessful so far in getting it working. i have the code for an interface which works and displays ok but creating a seperate class 'CalcEngine' to do the actual calculations has proven to be beyond me. I'd appreciate it if someone could kick start things for me and create a class calcEngine which works with the interface class and allows input when from single button i.e. if one is pressed on the calc then 1 displays onscreen. please note i'm not asking someone to do the whole thing for me as i want to learn and i'm confident i can do the rest including addition subtraction etc. once i get over the obstacle of getting the two classes to communicate. any and all assistance would be very much appreciated. Please see the calcInterface class code below - import java.awt.*; import javax.swing.*; import javax.swing.border.*; import java.awt.event.*; /** *A Class that operates as the framework for a calculator. *No calculations are performed in this section */ public class CalcFrame implements ActionListener { private CalcEngine calc; private JFrame frame; private JTextField display; private JLabel status; /** * Constructor for objects of class GridLayoutExample */ public CalcFrame() { makeFrame(); //calc = engine; } /** * This allows you to quit the calculator. */ // Alows the class to quit. private void quit() { System.exit(0); } // Calls the dialog frame with the information about the project. private void showAbout() { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(frame, "Group Project", "About Calculator Group Project", JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE); } private void makeFrame() { frame = new JFrame("Group Project Calculator"); makeMenuBar(frame); JPanel contentPane = (JPanel)frame.getContentPane(); contentPane.setLayout(new BorderLayout(8, 8)); contentPane.setBorder(new EmptyBorder( 10, 10, 10, 10)); /** * Insert a text field */ display = new JTextField(); contentPane.add(display, BorderLayout.NORTH); //Container contentPane = frame.getContentPane(); contentPane.setLayout(new GridLayout(4, 4)); JPanel buttonPanel = new JPanel(new GridLayout(4, 4)); contentPane.add(new JButton("1")); contentPane.add(new JButton("2")); contentPane.add(new JButton("3")); contentPane.add(new JButton("4")); contentPane.add(new JButton("5")); contentPane.add(new JButton("6")); contentPane.add(new JButton("7")); contentPane.add(new JButton("8")); contentPane.add(new JButton("9")); contentPane.add(new JButton("0")); contentPane.add(new JButton("+")); contentPane.add(new JButton("-")); contentPane.add(new JButton("/")); contentPane.add(new JButton("*")); contentPane.add(new JButton("=")); contentPane.add(new JButton("C")); contentPane.add(buttonPanel, BorderLayout.CENTER); //status = new JLabel(calc.getAuthor()); //contentPane.add(status, BorderLayout.SOUTH); frame.pack(); frame.setVisible(true); } /** * Create the main frame's menu bar. * The frame that the menu bar should be added to. */ private void makeMenuBar(JFrame frame) { final int SHORTCUT_MASK = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getMenuShortcutKeyMask(); JMenuBar menubar = new JMenuBar(); frame.setJMenuBar(menubar); JMenu menu; JMenuItem item; // create the File menu menu = new JMenu("File"); menubar.add(menu); // create the Quit menu with a shortcut "Q" key. item = new JMenuItem("Quit"); item.setAccelerator(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_Q, SHORTCUT_MASK)); item.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { quit(); } }); menu.add(item); // Adds an about menu. menu = new JMenu("About"); menubar.add(menu); // Displays item = new JMenuItem("Calculator Project"); item.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { showAbout(); } }); menu.add(item); } /** * An interface action has been performed. * Find out what it was and handle it. * @param event The event that has occured. */ public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent event) { String command = event.getActionCommand(); if(command.equals("0") || command.equals("1") || command.equals("2") || command.equals("3") || command.equals("4") || command.equals("5") || command.equals("6") || command.equals("7") || command.equals("8") || command.equals("9")) { int number = Integer.parseInt(command); calc.numberPressed(number); } else if(command.equals("+")) { calc.plus(); } else if(command.equals("-")) { calc.minus(); } else if(command.equals("=")) { calc.equals(); } else if(command.equals("C")) { calc.clear(); } else if(command.equals("?")) { } // else unknown command. redisplay(); } /** * Update the interface display to show the current value of the * calculator. */ private void redisplay() { display.setText("" + calc.getDisplayValue()); } /** * Toggle the info display in the calculator's status area between the * author and version information. */ }

  • having trouble with jpa, looks to be reading from cache when told to ignore

    - by jeff
    i'm using jpa and eclipselink. it says version 2.0.2.v20100323-r6872 for eclipselink. it's an SE application, small. local persistence unit. i am using a postgres database. i have some code the wakes up once per second and does a jpa query on a table. it's polling to see whether some fields on a given record change. but when i update a field in sql, it keeps showing the same value each time i query it. and this is after waiting, creating a new entitymanager, and giving a query hint. when i query the table from sql or python, i can see the changed field. but from within my jpa query, once i've read the value, it never changes in later executions of the query -- even though the entity manager has been recreated. i've tried telling it to not look in the cache. but it seems to ignore that. very puzzling, can you help please? here is the method. i call this once every 3 seconds. the tgt.getTrlDlrs() println shows me i get the same value for this field on every call of the method ("value won't change"). even if i change the field in the database. when i query the record from outside java, i see the change right away. also, if i stop the java program and restart it, i see the new value printed out immediately: public void exitChk(EntityManagerFactory emf, Main_1 mn){ // this will be a list of the trade close targets that are active List<Pairs01Tradeclosetgt> mn_res = new ArrayList<Pairs01Tradeclosetgt>(); //this is a list of the place number in the array list above //of positions to close ArrayList<Integer> idxsToCl = new ArrayList<Integer>(); EntityManager em = emf.createEntityManager(); em.getTransaction().begin(); em.clear(); String qryTxt = "SELECT p FROM Pairs01Tradeclosetgt p WHERE p.isClosed = :isClosed AND p.isFilled = :isFilled"; Query qMn = em.createQuery(qryTxt); qMn.setHint(QueryHints.CACHE_USAGE, CacheUsage.DoNotCheckCache); qMn.setParameter("isClosed", false); qMn.setParameter("isFilled", true); mn_res = (List<Pairs01Tradeclosetgt>) qMn.getResultList(); // are there any trade close targets we need to check for closing? if (mn_res!=null){ //if yes, see whether they've hit their target for (int i=0;i<mn_res.size();i++){ Pairs01Tradeclosetgt tgt = new Pairs01Tradeclosetgt(); tgt = mn_res.get(i); System.out.println("value won't change:" + tgt.getTrlDlrs()); here is my entity class (partial): @Entity @Table(name = "pairs01_tradeclosetgt", catalog = "blah", schema = "public") @NamedQueries({ @NamedQuery(name = "Pairs01Tradeclosetgt.findAll", query = "SELECT p FROM Pairs01Tradeclosetgt p"), @NamedQuery(name = "Pairs01Tradeclosetgt.findByClseRatio", query = "SELECT p FROM Pairs01Tradeclosetgt p WHERE p.clseRatio = :clseRatio")}) public class Pairs01Tradeclosetgt implements Serializable { private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; @Id @Basic(optional = false) @Column(name = "id") @SequenceGenerator(name="pairs01_tradeclosetgt_id_seq", allocationSize=1) @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.SEQUENCE, generator = "pairs01_tradeclosetgt_id_seq") private Integer id; and my persitence unit: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <persistence version="1.0" xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence/persistence_1_0.xsd"> <persistence-unit name="testpu" transaction-type="RESOURCE_LOCAL"> <provider>org.eclipse.persistence.jpa.PersistenceProvider</provider> <class>mourv02.Pairs01Quotes</class> <class>mourv02.Pairs01Pair</class> <class>mourv02.Pairs01Trderrs</class> <class>mourv02.Pairs01Tradereq</class> <class>mourv02.Pairs01Tradeclosetgt</class> <class>mourv02.Pairs01Orderstatus</class> <properties> <property name="javax.persistence.jdbc.url" value="jdbc:postgresql://192.168.1.80:5432/blah"/> <property name="javax.persistence.jdbc.password" value="secret"/> <property name="javax.persistence.jdbc.driver" value="org.postgresql.Driver"/> <property name="javax.persistence.jdbc.user" value="noone"/> </properties> </persistence-unit> </persistence>

  • How would you go about tackling this problem? [SOLVED in C++]

    - by incrediman
    Intro: EDIT: See solution at the bottom of this question (c++) I have a programming contest coming up in about half a week, and I've been prepping :) I found a bunch of questions from this canadian competition, they're great practice: http://cemc.math.uwaterloo.ca/contests/computing/2009/stage2/day1.pdf I'm looking at problem B ("Dinner"). Any idea where to start? I can't really think of anything besides the naive approach (ie. trying all permutations) which would take too long to be a valid answer. Btw, the language there says c++ and pascal I think, but i don't care what language you use - I mean really all I want is a hint as to the direction I should proceed in, and perhpas a short explanation to go along with it. It feels like I'm missing something obvious... Of course extended speculation is more than welcome, but I just wanted to clarify that I'm not looking for a full solution here :) Short version of the question: You have a binary string N of length 1-100 (in the question they use H's and G's instead of one's and 0's). You must remove all of the digits from it, in the least number of steps possible. In each step you may remove any number of adjacent digits so long as they are the same. That is, in each step you can remove any number of adjacent G's, or any number of adjacent H's, but you can't remove H's and G's in one step. Example: HHHGHHGHH Solution to the example: 1. HHGGHH (remove middle Hs) 2. HHHH (remove middle Gs) 3. Done (remove Hs) -->Would return '3' as the answer. Note that there can also be a limit placed on how large adjacent groups have to be when you remove them. For example it might say '2', and then you can't remove single digits (you'd have to remove pairs or larger groups at a time). Solution I took Mark Harrison's main algorithm, and Paradigm's grouping idea and used them to create the solution below. You can try it out on the official test cases if you want. //B.cpp //include debug messages? #define DEBUG false #include <iostream> #include <stdio.h> #include <vector> using namespace std; #define FOR(i,n) for (int i=0;i<n;i++) #define FROM(i,s,n) for (int i=s;i<n;i++) #define H 'H' #define G 'G' class String{ public: int num; char type; String(){ type=H; num=0; } String(char type){ this->type=type; num=1; } }; //n is the number of bits originally in the line //k is the minimum number of people you can remove at a time //moves is the counter used to determine how many moves we've made so far int n, k, moves; int main(){ /*Input from File*/ scanf("%d %d",&n,&k); char * buffer = new char[200]; scanf("%s",buffer); /*Process input into a vector*/ //the 'line' is a vector of 'String's (essentially contigious groups of identical 'bits') vector<String> line; line.push_back(String()); FOR(i,n){ //if the last String is of the correct type, simply increment its count if (line.back().type==buffer[i]) line.back().num++; //if the last String is of the wrong type but has a 0 count, correct its type and set its count to 1 else if (line.back().num==0){ line.back().type=buffer[i]; line.back().num=1; } //otherwise this is the beginning of a new group, so create the new group at the back with the correct type, and a count of 1 else{ line.push_back(String(buffer[i])); } } /*Geedily remove groups until there are at most two groups left*/ moves=0; int I;//the position of the best group to remove int bestNum;//the size of the newly connected group the removal of group I will create while (line.size()>2){ /*START DEBUG*/ if (DEBUG){ cout<<"\n"<<moves<<"\n----\n"; FOR(i,line.size()) printf("%d %c \n",line[i].num,line[i].type); cout<<"----\n"; } /*END DEBUG*/ I=1; bestNum=-1; FROM(i,1,line.size()-1){ if (line[i-1].num+line[i+1].num>bestNum && line[i].num>=k){ bestNum=line[i-1].num+line[i+1].num; I=i; } } //remove the chosen group, thus merging the two adjacent groups line[I-1].num+=line[I+1].num; line.erase(line.begin()+I);line.erase(line.begin()+I); moves++; } /*START DEBUG*/ if (DEBUG){ cout<<"\n"<<moves<<"\n----\n"; FOR(i,line.size()) printf("%d %c \n",line[i].num,line[i].type); cout<<"----\n"; cout<<"\n\nFinal Answer: "; } /*END DEBUG*/ /*Attempt the removal of the last two groups, and output the final result*/ if (line.size()==2 && line[0].num>=k && line[1].num>=k) cout<<moves+2;//success else if (line.size()==1 && line[0].num>=k) cout<<moves+1;//success else cout<<-1;//not everyone could dine. /*START DEBUG*/ if (DEBUG){ cout<<" moves."; } /*END DEBUG*/ }

  • Replacing objects, handling clones, dealing with write logs

    - by Alix
    Hi everyone, I'm dealing with a problem I can't figure out how to solve, and I'd love to hear some suggestions. [NOTE: I realise I'm asking several questions; however, answers need to take into account all of the issues, so I cannot split this into several questions] Here's the deal: I'm implementing a system that underlies user applications and that protect shared objects from concurrent accesses. The application programmer (whose application will run on top of my system) defines such shared objects like this: public class MyAtomicObject { // These are just examples of fields you may want to have in your class. public virtual int x { get; set; } public virtual List<int> list { get; set; } public virtual MyClassA objA { get; set; } public virtual MyClassB objB { get; set; } } As you can see they declare the fields of their class as auto-generated properties (auto-generated means they don't need to implement get and set). This is so that I can go in and extend their class and implement each get and set myself in order to handle possible concurrent accesses, etc. This is all well and good, but now it starts to get ugly: the application threads run transactions, like this: The thread signals it's starting a transaction. This means we now need to monitor its accesses to the fields of the atomic objects. The thread runs its code, possibly accessing fields for reading or writing. If there are accesses for writing, we'll hide them from the other transactions (other threads), and only make them visible in step 3. This is because the transaction may fail and have to roll back (undo) its updates, and in that case we don't want other threads to see its "dirty" data. The thread signals it wants to commit the transaction. If the commit is successful, the updates it made will now become visible to everyone else. Otherwise, the transaction will abort, the updates will remain invisible, and no one will ever know the transaction was there. So basically the concept of transaction is a series of accesses that appear to have happened atomically, that is, all at the same time, in the same instant, which would be the moment of successful commit. (This is as opposed to its updates becoming visible as it makes them) In order to hide the write accesses in step 2, I clone the accessed field (let's say it's the field list) and put it in the transaction's write log. After that, any time the transaction accesses list, it will actually be accessing the clone in its write log, and not the global copy everyone else sees. Like this, any changes it makes will be done to the (invisible) clone, not to the global copy. If in step 3 the commit is successful, the transaction should replace the global copy with the updated list it has in its write log, and then the changes become visible for everyone else at once. It would be something like this: myAtomicObject.list = updatedCloneOfListInTheWriteLog; Problem #1: possible references to the list. Let's say someone puts a reference to the global list in a dictionary. When I do... myAtomicObject.list = updatedCloneOfListInTheWriteLog; ...I'm just replacing the reference in the field list, but not the real object (I'm not overwriting the data), so in the dictionary we'll still have a reference to the old version of the list. A possible solution would be to overwrite the data (in the case of a list, empty the global list and add all the elements of the clone). More generically, I would need to copy the fields of one list to the other. I can do this with reflection, but that's not very pretty. Is there any other way to do it? Problem #2: even if problem #1 is solved, I still have a similar problem with the clone: the application programmer doesn't know I'm giving him a clone and not the global copy. What if he puts the clone in a dictionary? Then at commit there will be some references to the global copy and some to the clone, when in truth they should all point to the same object. I thought about providing a wrapper object that contains both the cloned list and a pointer to the global copy, but the programmer doesn't know about this wrapper, so they're not going to use the pointer at all. The wrapper would be like this: public class Wrapper<T> : T { // This would be the pointer to the global copy. The local data is contained in whatever fields the wrapper inherits from T. private T thisPtr; } I do need this wrapper for comparisons: if I have a dictionary that has an entry with the global copy as key, if I look it up with the clone, like this: dictionary[updatedCloneOfListInTheWriteLog] I need it to return the entry, that is, to think that updatedCloneOfListInTheWriteLog and the global copy are the same thing. For this, I can just override Equals, GetHashCode, operator== and operator!=, no problem. However I still don't know how to solve the case in which the programmer unknowingly inserts a reference to the clone in a dictionary. Problem #3: the wrapper must extend the class of the object it wraps (if it's wrapping MyClassA, it must extend MyClassA) so that it's accepted wherever an object of that class (MyClass) would be accepted. However, that class (MyClassA) may be final. This is pretty horrible :$. Any suggestions? I don't need to use a wrapper, anything you can think of is fine. What I cannot change is the write log (I need to have a write log) and the fact that the programmer doesn't know about the clone. I hope I've made some sense. Feel free to ask for more info if something needs some clearing up. Thanks so much!

  • Java RMI cannot connect to host from external client.

    - by Koe
    I've been using RMI in this project for a while. I've gotten the client program to connect (amongst other things) to the server when running it over my LAN, however when running it over the internet I'm running into the following exception: java.rmi.ConnectException: Connection refused to host: (private IP of host machine); nested exception is: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect at sun.rmi.transport.tcp.TCPEndpoint.newSocket(Unknown Source) at sun.rmi.transport.tcp.TCPChannel.createConnection(Unknown Source) at sun.rmi.transport.tcp.TCPChannel.newConnection(Unknown Source) at sun.rmi.server.UnicastRef.invoke(Unknown Source) at java.rmi.server.RemoteObjectInvocationHandler.invokeRemoteMethod(Unknown Source) at java.rmi.server.RemoteObjectInvocationHandler.invoke(Unknown Source) at $Proxy1.ping(Unknown Source) at client.Launcher$PingLabel.runPing(Launcher.java:366) at client.Launcher$PingLabel.<init>(Launcher.java:353) at client.Launcher.setupContentPane(Launcher.java:112) at client.Launcher.<init>(Launcher.java:99) at client.Launcher.main(Launcher.java:59) Caused by: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketConnect(Native Method) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.doConnect(Unknown Source) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.connectToAddress(Unknown Source) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(Unknown Source) at java.net.SocksSocketImpl.connect(Unknown Source) at java.net.Socket.connect(Unknown Source) at java.net.Socket.connect(Unknown Source) at java.net.Socket.<init>(Unknown Source) at java.net.Socket.<init>(Unknown Source) at sun.rmi.transport.proxy.RMIDirectSocketFactory.createSocket(Unknown Source) at sun.rmi.transport.proxy.RMIMasterSocketFactory.createSocket(Unknown Source) ... 12 more This error is remeniscent of my early implementation of RMI and I can obtain the error verbatum if I run the client locally without the server program running as well. To me Connection Timed Out means a problem with the server's response. Here's the client initiation: public static void main(String[] args) { try { String host = "<WAN IP>"; Registry registry = LocateRegistry.getRegistry(host, 1099); Login lstub = (Login) registry.lookup("Login Server"); Information istub = (Information) registry.lookup("Game Server"); new Launcher(istub, lstub); } catch (RemoteException e) { System.err.println("Client exception: " + e.toString()); e.printStackTrace(); } catch (NotBoundException e) { System.err.println("Client exception: " + e.toString()); e.printStackTrace(); } } Interestingly enough no Remote Exception is thrown here. Here's the server initiation: public static void main(String args[]) { try { GameServer gobj = new GameServer(); Information gstub = (Information) UnicastRemoteObject.exportObject( gobj, 1099); Registry registry = LocateRegistry.createRegistry(1099); registry.bind("Game Server", gstub); LoginServer lobj = new LoginServer(gobj); Login lstub = (Login) UnicastRemoteObject.exportObject(lobj, 7099); // Bind the remote object's stub in the registry registry.bind("Login Server", lstub); System.out.println("Server ready"); } catch (Exception e) { System.err.println("Server exception: " + e.toString()); e.printStackTrace(); } } Bad practice with the catch(Exception e) I know but bear with me. Up to this stage I know it works fine over the LAN, here's where the exception occurs over the WAN and is the first place a method in the server is called: private class PingLabel extends JLabel { private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; public PingLabel() { super(""); runPing(); } public void setText(String text) { super.setText("Ping: " + text + "ms"); } public void runPing() { try { PingThread pt = new PingThread(); gameServer.ping(); pt.setRecieved(true); setText("" + pt.getTime()); } catch (RemoteException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } That's a label placed on the launcher as a ping test. the method ping(), in gameserver does nothing, as in is a null method. It's worth noting also that ports 1099 and 7099 are forwarded to the server machine (which should be obvious from the stack trace). Can anyone see anyting I'm missing/doing wrong? If you need any more information just ask. EDIT: I'm practically certain the problem has nothing to do with my router settings. When disabling my port forwarding settings I get a slightly different error: Client exception: java.rmi.ConnectException: Connection refused to host: (-WAN IP NOT LOCAL IP-); but it appears both on the machine locally connected to the server and on the remote machine. In addition, I got it to work seamlessly when connecting the server straight tho the modem (cutting out the router. I can only conclude the problem is in my router's settings but can't see where (I've checked and double checked the port forwarding page). That's the only answer i can come up with.

  • Reading data from database and binding them to custom ListView

    - by N.K.
    I try to read data from a database i have made and to show some of the data in a row at a custom ListView. I can not understand what is my mistake. This is my code: public class EsodaMainActivity extends Activity { public static final String ROW_ID = "row_id"; //Intent extra key private ListView esodaListView; // the ListActivitys ListView private SimpleCursorAdapter esodaAdapter; // adapter for ListView DatabaseConnector databaseConnector = new DatabaseConnector(EsodaMainActivity.this); // called when the activity is first created @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.activity_esoda_main); esodaListView = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.esodaList); esodaListView.setOnItemClickListener(viewEsodaListener); databaseConnector.open(); //Cursor cursor= databaseConnector.query("esoda", new String[] // {"name", "amount"}, null,null,null); Cursor cursor=databaseConnector.getAllEsoda(); startManagingCursor(cursor); // map each esoda to a TextView in the ListView layout // The desired columns to be bound String[] from = new String[] {"name","amount"}; // built an String array named "from" //The XML defined views which the data will be bound to int[] to = new int[] { R.id.esodaTextView, R.id.amountTextView}; // built an int array named "to" // EsodaMainActivity.this = The context in which the ListView is running // R.layout.esoda_list_item = Id of the layout that is used to display each item in ListView // null = // from = String array containing the column names to display // to = Int array containing the column names to display esodaAdapter = new SimpleCursorAdapter (this, R.layout.esoda_list_item, cursor, from, to); esodaListView.setAdapter(esodaAdapter); // set esodaView's adapter } // end of onCreate method @Override protected void onResume() { super.onResume(); // call super's onResume method // create new GetEsodaTask and execute it // GetEsodaTask is an AsyncTask object new GetEsodaTask().execute((Object[]) null); } // end of onResume method // onStop method is executed when the Activity is no longer visible to the user @Override protected void onStop() { Cursor cursor= esodaAdapter.getCursor(); // gets current cursor from esodaAdapter if (cursor != null) cursor.deactivate(); // deactivate cursor esodaAdapter.changeCursor(null); // adapter now has no cursor (removes the cursor from the CursorAdapter) super.onStop(); } // end of onStop method // this class performs db query outside the GUI private class GetEsodaTask extends AsyncTask<Object, Object, Cursor> { // we create a new DatabaseConnector obj // EsodaMainActivity.this = Context DatabaseConnector databaseConnector = new DatabaseConnector(EsodaMainActivity.this); // perform the db access @Override protected Cursor doInBackground(Object... params) { databaseConnector.open(); // get a cursor containing call esoda return databaseConnector.getAllEsoda(); // the cursor returned by getAllContacts() is passed to method onPostExecute() } // end of doInBackground method // here we use the cursor returned from the doInBackground() method @Override protected void onPostExecute(Cursor result) { esodaAdapter.changeCursor(result); // set the adapter's Cursor databaseConnector.close(); } // end of onPostExecute() method } // end of GetEsodaTask class // creates the Activity's menu from a menu resource XML file @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu); MenuInflater inflater = getMenuInflater(); inflater.inflate(R.menu.esoda_menu, menu); // inflates(eµf?s?) esodamainactivity_menu.xml to the Options menu return true; } // end of onCreateOptionsMenu() method //handles choice from options menu - is executed when the user touches a MenuItem @Override public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) { // creates a new Intent to launch the AddEditEsoda Activity // EsodaMainActivity.this = Context from which the Activity will be launched // AddEditEsoda.class = target Activity Intent addNewEsoda = new Intent(EsodaMainActivity.this, AddEditEsoda.class); startActivity(addNewEsoda); return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item); } // end of method onPtionsItemSelected() // event listener that responds to the user touching a esoda's name in the ListView OnItemClickListener viewEsodaListener = new OnItemClickListener() { @Override public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> arg0, View arg1, int arg2, long arg3) { // create an intent to launch the ViewEsoda Activity Intent viewEsoda = new Intent(EsodaMainActivity.this, ViewEsoda.class); // pass the selected esoda's row ID as an extra with the Intent viewEsoda.putExtra(ROW_ID, arg3); startActivity(viewEsoda); // start viewEsoda.class Activity } // end of onItemClick() method }; // end of viewEsodaListener } // end of EsodaMainActivity class The statement: Cursor cursor=databaseConnector.getAllEsoda(); queries all data (columns) From the data I want to show at my custom ListView 2 of them: "name" and "amount". • Vector of Object Pointers, general help and confusion

    - by Staypuft
    Have a homework assignment in which I'm supposed to create a vector of pointers to objects Later on down the load, I'll be using inheritance/polymorphism to extend the class to include fees for two-day delivery, next day air, etc. However, that is not my concern right now. The final goal of the current program is to just print out every object's content in the vector (name & address) and find it's shipping cost (weight*cost). My Trouble is not with the logic, I'm just confused on few points related to objects/pointers/vectors in general. But first my code. I basically cut out everything that does not mater right now, int main, will have user input, but right now I hard-coded two examples. #include <iostream> #include <string> #include <vector> using namespace std; class Package { public: Package(); //default constructor Package(string d_name, string d_add, string d_zip, string d_city, string d_state, double c, double w); double calculateCost(double, double); void Print(); ~Package(); private: string dest_name; string dest_address; string dest_zip; string dest_city; string dest_state; double weight; double cost; }; Package::Package() { cout<<"Constucting Package Object with default values: "<<endl; string dest_name=""; string dest_address=""; string dest_zip=""; string dest_city=""; string dest_state=""; double weight=0; double cost=0; } Package::Package(string d_name, string d_add, string d_zip, string d_city, string d_state, string r_name, string r_add, string r_zip, string r_city, string r_state, double w, double c){ cout<<"Constucting Package Object with user defined values: "<<endl; string dest_name=d_name; string dest_address=d_add; string dest_zip=d_zip; string dest_city=d_city; string dest_state=d_state; double weight=w; double cost=c; } Package::~Package() { cout<<"Deconstructing Package Object!"<<endl; delete Package; } double Package::calculateCost(double x, double y){ return x+y; } int main(){ double cost=0; vector<Package*> shipment; cout<<"Enter Shipping Cost: "<<endl; cin>>cost; shipment.push_back(new Package("tom r","123 thunder road", "90210", "Red Bank", "NJ", cost, 10.5)); shipment.push_back(new Package ("Harry Potter","10 Madison Avenue", "55555", "New York", "NY", cost, 32.3)); return 0; } So my questions are: I'm told I have to use a vector of Object Pointers, not Objects. Why? My assignment calls for it specifically, but I'm also told it won't work otherwise. Where should I be creating this vector? Should it be part of my Package Class? How do I go about adding objects into it then? Do I need a copy constructor? Why? What's the proper way to deconstruct my vector of object pointers? Any help would be appreciated. I've searched for a lot of related articles on here and I realize that my program will have memory leaks. Using one of the specialized ptrs from boost:: will not be available for me to use. Right now, I'm more concerned with getting the foundation of my program built. That way I can actually get down to the functionality I need to create. Thanks.

  • Threads to make video out of images

    - by masood
    updates: I think/ suspect the imageIO is not thread safe. shared by all threads. the read() call might use resources that are also shared. Thus it will give the performance of a single thread no matter how many threads used. ? if its correct . what is the solution (in practical code) Single request and response model at one time do not utilizes full network/internet bandwidth, thus resulting in low performance. (benchmark is of half speed utilization or even lower) This is to make a video out of an IP cam that gives a new image on each request. http://149.5.43.10:8001/snapshot.jpg It makes a delay of 3 - 8 seconds no matter what I do. Changed thread no. and thread time intervals, debugged the code by System.out.println statements to see if threads work. All seems normal. Any help? Please show some practical code. You may modify mine. • Is multithreading the right way to go for my case?

    - by Julien Lebosquain
    Hello, I'm currently designing a multi-client / server application. I'm using plain good old sockets because WCF or similar technology is not what I need. Let me explain: it isn't the classical case of a client simply calling a service; all clients can 'interact' with each other by sending a packet to the server, which will then do some action, and possible re-dispatch an answer message to one or more clients. Although doable with WCF, the application will get pretty complex with hundreds of different messages. For each connected client, I'm of course using asynchronous methods to send and receive bytes. I've got the messages fully working, everything's fine. Except that for each line of code I'm writing, my head just burns because of multithreading issues. Since there could be around 200 clients connected at the same time, I chose to go the fully multithreaded way: each received message on a socket is immediately processed on the thread pool thread it was received, not on a single consumer thread. Since each client can interact with other clients, and indirectly with shared objects on the server, I must protect almost every object that is mutable. I first went with a ReaderWriterLockSlim for each resource that must be protected, but quickly noticed that there are more writes overall than reads in the server application, and switched to the well-known Monitor to simplify the code. So far, so good. Each resource is protected, I have helper classes that I must use to get a lock and its protected resource, so I can't use an object without getting a lock. Moreover, each client has its own lock that is entered as soon as a packet is received from its socket. It's done to prevent other clients from making changes to the state of this client while it has some messages being processed, which is something that will happen frequently. Now, I don't just need to protect resources from concurrent accesses. I must keep every client in sync with the server for some collections I have. One tricky part that I'm currently struggling with is the following: I have a collection of clients. Each client has its own unique ID. When a client connects, it must receive the IDs of every connected client, and each one of them must be notified of the newcomer's ID. When a client disconnects, every other client must know it so that its ID is no longer valid for them. Every client must always have, at a given time, the same clients collection as the server so that I can assume that everybody knows everybody. This way if I'm sending a message to client #1 telling "Client #2 has done something", I know that it will always be correctly interpreted: Client 1 will never wonder "but who is Client 2 anyway?". My first attempt for handling the connection of a new client (let's call it X) was this pseudo-code (remember that newClient is already locked here): lock (clients) { foreach (var client in clients) { lock (client) { client.Send("newClient with id X has connected"); } } clients.Add(newClient); newClient.Send("the list of other clients"); } Now imagine that in the same time, another client has sent a packet that translates into a message that must be broadcasted to every connected client, the pseudo-code will be something like this (remember that the current client - let's call it Y - is already locked here): lock (clients) { foreach (var client in clients) { lock (client) { client.Send("something"); } } } An obvious deadlock occurs here: on one thread X is locked, the clients lock has been entered, started looping through the clients, and at one moment must get Y's lock... which is already acquired on the second thread, itself waiting for the clients collection lock to be released! This is not the only case like this in the server application. There are other collections which must be kept in sync with the clients, some properties on a client can be changed by another one, etc. I tried other types of locks, lock-free mechanisms and a bunch of other things. Either there were obvious deadlocks when I'm using too much locks for safety, or obvious race conditions otherwise. When I finally find a good middle point between the two, it usually comes with very subtle race conditions / dead locks and other multi-threading issues... my head hurts very quickly since for any single line of code I'm writing I have to review almost the whole application to ensure everything will behave correctly with any number of threads. So here's my final question: how would you resolve this specific case, the general case, and more importantly: aren't I going the wrong way here? I have little problems with the .NET framework, C#, simple concurrency or algorithms in general. Still, I'm lost here. I know I could use only one thread processing the incoming requests and everything will be fine. However, that won't scale well at all with more clients... But I'm thinking more and more to go this simple way. What do you think? Thanks in advance to you, StackOverflow people which have taken the time to read this huge question. I really had to explain the whole context if I want to get some help.
