• Published Windows Phone 7 apps: good for the Resume/CV?

  I'm a long time Microsoft developer who has recently started publishing Windows Phone 7 apps to beef up my current C#/.NET skills, and get more direct exposure to WPF/Silverlight, and of course because it is new and cool. So far I've published over 10 apps successfully. Is this a good thing to put on my resume? Does it appear to show a grasp of the latest Microsoft technologies? Any downside seen by potential employers? Would you put this on your resume, if looking for a full time professional Software Engineering position?

• What did I do wrong when installed this theme?

  I have a problem installing a theme for my Ubuntu, note that I am very new to it and probably messed something up. Still it seems to me that I did everything like it was stated in the INSTALL file. Theme: http://opendesktop.org/content/show.php/?content=140562 So I downloaded the *.zip package, unzipped it in home/.themes folder and changed Controls and Borders inside my theme preference. Still my result is pretty poor. You can look at the image, it looks nothing like what in the screenshot of the author. I also installed fonts running sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer and tried to install GTK2 engine as sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-murrine gtk2-engines-pixbuf, but it showed that 0 files was modified since I already have it. Please tell me what did I did wrong so I can fix that :) (It seems that I can't upload images yet, no rep. I can give you link tho) http://postimage.org/image/1zhibxx5w/full/

• Brightness control not working on HP Pavilion dm3t (Intel GMA 4500MHD)

  Hey all, I picked up an hp dm3t laptop with intel HD graphics and installed ubuntu 10.10 64 bit on it. It works great -- the only problem is that the brightness controls on the keyboard don't work. The brightness is always at full. When I try to adjust it down, the indicator graphic indicates that it's going down but the actual brightness doesn't change. Is there anything that I can try to make this work? I'd really appreciate any help. I asked this on superuser.com and someone commented that I should play around with the intel hd drivers. I'm a total noob -- how do I do that? What else can I try? I really don't want to go back to windows.

  I've currently graduated from my first run at higher education, landed my first full-time gig as a web application developer, and absolutely love it. My question is that in looking for jobs I ran across many jobs that require a certain level of experience and code examples. Much of the work I am doing is both protected by a login, and closed source. How does someone, that is just starting out and needs to be building a resume, go about preparing for the next job. (no matter how much i love my current job, i feel like it's only responsible to always be preparing)

  I am going to write a bachelor's science work on caching strategies and really, can't find any links to specifications or full descriptions of some of them. Only something like summaries from wikipedia. Please, help with some links on LRU, MRU caching and new-one - Clock Pro. Thanks a lot. All links are very useful for me. The purpose of work - is to compare different cache strategies to get more effiency. It based on WebApplication with ejb 2.0, so algorithm's will be implemented there, espesially in ejbLoad() and ejbFindByPrimarKey(). Also, one of aspects of this application - it will use not common scheme of tables in database - it based on metamodel. So, if you had any experience on this topic, i would be grateful to take some of your knowledge)

• I'm getting a black screen right after Install Ubuntu option on GRUB menu. Any ideas?

  I've formatted my USB and remade the live USB twice. I tried editing editing the commands (pressing the 'e' key while the command was highlighted on the GRUB menu) by 1. deleting quiet splash and replacing it with nomodeset 2. adding nomodeset right before quiet splash 3. deleting quiet splash and adding radeon.modeset=0 I saw another solution for a fix by editing GRUB but in command line 'sudo' 'nano' and 'update-grub' all show up as unknown commands. I'm brand new to Ubuntu, in case you couldn't tell. I would appreciate any help you could give me. I want to convince my brother that Ubuntu is a better option than iOS but I can't do that if I can't install it. If you need more information, please ask. I'm not dual booting. I want this to be a full install. Thanks.

• 12.10 on Elitebook 8560w w/ WUBI

  I am trying dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu on my Elitebook 8560w via WUBI. Between Microsoft and HP they used up all my primary partitions so I decided WUBI was the best way to go. It all goes smoothly until I reboot to finish the installation, then it hangs at copying files. It always freezes here: debconf (filter): widget found for ubiquity/install/title debconf (filter): -- 0 OK It also says something about "so and so might freeze best to kill it" but I didn't get it written down. Can anybody tell me what that means? • Chrome dispay Glich when GPU acc. on

  Hy Everyone! I have some graphics glich when enable gpu acc. in chrome. If i disable acceleraion it fix the glich but, in full HD most of flash videos frame rate drop above frogs a**, so very slow... :) Any idea, what can i do? I Upload 2 pics from glich. My hardware: CM Hyper TX 3 on AMD A5300 with HD 7480D 6 GB RAM I use official AMD driver from amd.com, Ubuntu 14.04(I upgraded from 12.04, in Ubuntu 12, same glitch with old drivers.) I reinstalld x.org completly and purge all config files, but this didnt resolve the problem. • How much C/C++ knowledge is needed for Objective-C/iPhone development?

  First, a little background. I'm a .Net developer (C#) and have over 5 years experience in both web development and desktop applications. I've been wanting to look into iPhone development for some time now, but for one reason or another always got side tracked. I finally have a potential project on the horizon, and I'm now going full steam ahead learning this stuff. My question is this: I haven't done any C/C++ programming since my schooling days, I've been living in managed land ever since. How much knowledge if any is needed to be successful as an iOS developer? Obviously memory management is something that I'll have to be conscious about (although with iOS 5 there seems to be something called ARC which should make my life easier), but what else? I'm not just talking about the C API (for example, in order to get the sin of a number, I call the sin() function), that's what Google is for. I'm talking about fundamental C/C++ idioms that the average C# developer is unaware of.

• Real World ADF - another new ADF book hits the stands

  I'm pleased to report that yet another Oracle ADF book hits the bookstores this month.  One of my fellow Product Managers, Jobinesh, has written Oracle ADF Real World Developer's Guide.   I'm currently awaiting a copy for review and can't wait to get into this book.  Jobinesh is an incredibly smart and switched-on technical ADF guru and I'm convinced I'm going to learn a whole lot of tips and techniques from this book. Once I get my hands on a copy I'll be writing up a full review. As someone who has written an Oracle ADF book already, I know the effort that goes into something like that, so well done Jobinesh.

• Mobile music playback on android phone keeps buffering

  I have copied some music to a ubuntu synced folder on my karmic machine. I have the Ubuntu One android app installed on android 2.2 phone. When listening to music I get frequent breaks whilst the music is buffering, even with full signal. every other music streaming servie such as last fm and bbc player are fine. What is going wrong? mp3s should not have trouble buffering over a good 3g signal. I have set cache size to 200mb but i cant find a buffer size. Is it my mp3s? they are usually in the order of 320kb/s this is a breaker for me if there is no solution which is a massive shame as i like the principal of the software. cheers

• Choice of Operating System Version for Azure Roles

  Customers can now choose when their applications receive new operating system updates and patches by selecting which version of the operating system their applications will run on in Windows Azure.  Right now there is only one available operating system version (released on December 17th, 2009), but new builds with the latest updates and patches will be released regularly.  This new feature allows developers to test their applications when new patches come out before upgrading their production deployments. • Computer crashed during 3.0.0.17-generic kernel upgrade

  My computer crashed (due to heat) during the update process for the 3.0.0.17-generic kernel upgrade. My computer will not boot ant all in 3.0.0.17 now and 3.0.0.16 is unstable (wireless networking doesn't work, also crashes often). I found the boot to previous versions tool at start up and the last stable version is 3.0.0.15-generic. However, my computer still thinks that it has 3.0.0.16-generic and 3.0.0.17-generic, even though both of these versions are broken. Is there anyway to force a reinstall of the 3.0.0.16-generic and 3.0.0.17-generic kernel updates from 3.0.0.15 and associated other updates?. (Without having to do a full reinstall?) I am running ubuntu 11.10. Thanks!

  Concatenating output from a SELECT statement is a pretty basic thing to do in SQL. The main ways to perform this would be to use either the CONCAT() function, the || operator or the + operator. It really all depends on which version of SQL you are using. The following examples use T-SQL (MS SQL Server 2005) so it uses the + operator but other SQL versions have similar syntax. I've already won some work from a local company doing C# development and quoting an hourly rate for work that i am doing from my office. However on one upcoming project I've been asked to come on-site (client office) to work a full week. Is it reasonable to charge more than my regular hourly rate for working on site? And how should i justify the extra charges?

  I am trying to make my first app for sale, I would like to ask some questions for those who have already sold their software: Have you used a Framework/Lib whose LGPL License? if yes, what are the impressions of your customers? for example, if your customers/ competitors from the market reveal technology/secrets that you used in your solution (as LGPL requires that you make a Dynamic Link (.DLL) for your libs and you clearly tell the use of a Lib/Framework ...). Full story: For my project, I used a framework LGPL/commercial (Dual License) the second one it was too expensive (about 3000 USD) which pushed me to use LGPL.. however I still concerned..   The Mojarra 2.1.2 release was cut a few days ago. Here are the full Maven coordinates : api, impl. You can also get to the release notes and to the list of bugs fixed in this release. This is scheduled for inclusion into the upcoming GlassFish 3.1.1 release. In fact it's already integrated in the latest promoted build (#8) which also includes woodstox 4.1.1. Weld 1.1.1.Final has already been integrated a few builds ago. The JSF team is now working on JSR 344 (JSF 2.2) for which you can get a status by visiting http://jsf-spec.java.net/ and the associated mailing lists. A first expert draft is now available.
