  • Rendering a view to a string in MVC, then redirecting -- workarounds?

    Hi -- I can't render a view to a string and then redirect, despite this answer from Feb (after version 1.0, I think) that claims it's possible. I thought I was doing something wrong, and then I read this answer from Haack in July that claims it's not possible. If somebody has it working and can help me get it working, that's great (and I'll post code, errors). However, I'm now at the point of needing workarounds. There are a few, but nothing ideal. Has anybody solved this, or have any comments on my ideas? This is to render email. While I can surely send the email outside of the web request (store info in a db and get it later), there are many types of emails and I don't want to store the template data (user object, a few other LINQ objects) in a db to let it get rendered later. I could create a simpler, serializable POCO and save that in the db, but why? ... I just want rendered text! I can create a new RedirectToAction object that checks if the headers have been sent (can't figure out how to do this -- try/catch?) and, if so, builds out a simple page with a meta redirect, a javascript redirect, and also a "click here" link. Within my controller, I can remember if I've rendered an email and, if so, manually do #2 by displaying a view. I can manually send the redirect headers before any potential email rendering. Then, rather than using the MVC infrastructure to redirecttoaction, I just call result.end. This seems easiest, but really messy. Anything else? EDIT: I've tried Dan's code (very similar to the code from Jan/Feb that I've already tried) and I'm still getting the same error. The only substantial difference I can see is that his example uses a view while I use a partial view. I'll try testing this later with a view.   • Error using Session in IIS7

    After deployment of my website to IIS I'm getting a following error message when trying to access session: Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. Please also make sure that System.Web.SessionStateModule or a custom session state module is included in the \\ section in the application configuration. I access it in Page_Load or PreRender events (I tried both versions). With VS Dev Server it works without a problem. I tried both InProc an SessionState storage, 1 and multiple woker processes. I added a enableSessionState = "true" to my webpage explicitly.   • XMLReader mysteriously fails when parsing document

    I have a php script that takes in some XML data and parses it, displaying various bits of information I pull out of it. This has been working fine for over 6 months, until recently it now fails mysteriously on a certain tag. The XML is generated from an outside source(a conferencing bridge), so I have no control over how it is built. I have put the xml through an online validator and it returned no errors. The code also works fine when I connect to another conferencing bridge and get the same output. I have been using XMLReader class so far and tried switching to SmipleXML, but it fails when I create the SimpleXML object using the data.   • Serializing WPF DataTemplates and {Binding Expressions} (from PowerShell?)

    Ok, here's the deal: I have code that works in C#, but when I call it from PowerShell, it fails. I can't quite figure it out, but it's something specific to PowerShell.   • How can I bind events to strongly typed datasets of different types?

    My application contains several forms which consist of a strongly typed datagridview, a strongly typed bindingsource, and a strongly typed table adapter. I am using some code in each form to update the database whenever the user leaves the current row, shifts focus away from the datagrid or the form, or closes the form. This code is the same in each case, so I want to make a subclass of form, from which all of these forms can inherit. But the strongly typed data objects all inherit from component, which doesn't expose the events I want to bind to or the methods I want to invoke. The only way I can see of gaining access to the events is to use: Type(string Name).GetEvent(string EventName).AddEventHandler(object Target,Delegate Handler) Similarly, I want to call the Update method of the strongly typed table adapter, and am using Type(string Name).GetMethod(String name, Type[] params).Invoke(object target, object[] params). It works ok, but it seems very heavy handed. Is there a better way?   • Spring's EntityManager not persisting

    Well, my project was using EJB and JPA (with Hibernate), but I had to switch to Spring. Everything was working well before that. The EJB used to inject the EntityManager, controled the transaction, etc. Ok, when I switched to Spring, I had a lot of problems because I'm new on Spring. But after everything is running, I have the problem: the data is never saved on database. I configured my Spring to control the transactions, I have spring beans used in JSF, that has spring services that do the hard work. This services have a EntityManager injected and use @Transactional REQUIRED. This services pass the EntityManager to a DAO that call entityManager.persist(bean). The selects appears to work well, the JTA transaction appears to work well to (I saw in log), but the entity is not saved!   • what's wrong with my producer-consumer queue design?

    I'm starting with the C# code example here. I'm trying to adapt it for a couple reasons: 1) in my scenario, all tasks will be put in the queue up-front before consumers will start, and 2) I wanted to abstract the worker into a separate class instead of having raw Thread members within the WorkerQueue class. My queue doesn't seem to dispose of itself though, it just hangs, and when I break in Visual Studio it's stuck on the _th.Join() line for WorkerThread #1. Also, is there a better way to organize this? Something about exposing the WaitOne() and Join() methods seems wrong, but I couldn't think of an appropriate way to let the WorkerThread interact with the queue. Also, an aside - if I call q.Start(#) at the top of the using block, only some of the threads every kick in (e.g. threads 1, 2, and 8 process every task). Why is this?   • nhibernate cascade - problem with detached entities

    I am going nuts here trying to resolve a cascading update/delete issue :-) I have a Parent Entity with a collection Child Entities. If I modify the list of Child entities in a detached Parent object, adding, deleting etc - I am not seeing the updates cascaded correctly to the Child collection. The problems seems to be something to do with attaching the Product to the new session? As the cascade is set to all-delete-orphan I assume that changes to the collection would be propagated to the relevant entities/tables? In this case deletes? What am I missing here? C

  • When Clearing an ObservableCollection, There are No Items in e.OldItems

    I have something here that is really catching me off guard. I have an ObservableCollection of T that is filled with items. I also have an event handler attached to the CollectionChanged event. When you Clear the collection it causes an CollectionChanged event with e.Action set to NotifyCollectionChangedAction.Reset. Ok, that's normal. But what is weird is that neither e.OldItems or e.NewItems has anything in it. I would expect e.OldItems to be filled with all items that were removed from the collection. Has anyone else seen this? And if so, how have they gotten around it? Some background: I am using the CollectionChanged event to attach and detach from another event and thus if I don't get any items in e.OldItems ... I won't be able to detach from that event. CLARIFICATION: I do know that the documentation doesn't outright state that it has to behave this way. But for every other action, it is notifying me of what it has done. So, my assumption is that it would tell me ... in the case of Clear/Reset as well. What is needed : the caller program will pass an array of string to the dll and the dll should change the string values in the array.     After deployment of my website to IIS I'm getting a following error message when trying to access session: Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. Please also make sure that System.Web.SessionStateModule or a custom session state module is included in the \\ section in the application configuration. I access it in Page_Load or PreRender events (I tried both versions). With VS Dev Server it works without a problem. I tried both InProc an SessionState storage, 1 and multiple woker processes. I added a enableSessionState = "true" to my webpage explicitly.     I am trying UpdatePanel & AsyncPostBackTrigger on master pages through find control method but problem is when I click on button (UpdateButton) It just flash/flick (No Postback) the UpdatePanle but still it don't update or refresh the gridview (images) inside the updatePanel. I have placed script Manger on the master page & an AJAX Update panel in a ContentPlaceHolder in the child page. Also, in another ContentPlaceholder there is an asp button (outside of the UpdatePanel). I want to refresh/reload the AJAX UpdatePanel with this asp button. Thanks for suggestions. The reason for integrating this filter comes from Spring security FAQs: I'm using Tomcat (or some other servlet container) and have enabled HTTPS for my login page, switching back to HTTP afterwards. It doesn't work - I just end up back at the login page after authenticating. This happens because sessions created under HTTPS, for which the session cookie is marked as “secure”, cannot subsequently be used under HTTP. The browser will not send the cookie back to the server and any session state will be lost (including the security context information). Starting a session in HTTP first should work as the session cookie won't be marked as secure.
