• Wi-Fi won't automatically connect (box in Windows configuration gets unchecked)

  The checkbox that says "Use windows to configure my wireless network settings" keeps getting unchecked (Wirless Network Connection - Change advanced settings - Wireless networks tab.) How do I stop that from happening? (So the wi-fi will reconnect.) When I manually re-check the box, it automatically connects.) I have a D-Link AirPremier DWL-G550 PCI adapter. I installed the newest driver, 5.3.0.46, and that didn't solve the problem. I took the "Atheros Client Utility" (the program window says "D-Link AirPremier Client Utility" when you run it) out of the start menu, rebooted, and that didn't solve the problem. (That utility puts a signal bar similiar to the one MS Windows puts there, and it's gone now.) The D-Link client utility has an option to automatically connect to preferred networks, but it is greyed out. It is also greyed out if I install the driver and utility right off the D-Link installation CD, so the problem isn't that the utility and driver are incompatible versions. I want to use Windows to handle the connection anyway, as the D-Link utility is garbage. Windows XP SP3 w/all current updates.

• Run as another user, but also as administrator

  I am trying to debug a virtual machine (VM) running on a remote computer from my workstation (A). Both VM and A are running Windows 7 Enterprise. Apparently, I need to start the Remote Debugger Service (RDS) on VM as an administrator. Apparently, I also need to run RDS as the user Tewr logged in on A (domain: DOM). VM runs the services i need to debug, as well as the remote desktop interface with an account VMUSER in a domain called VMDOMAIN. I manage to start RDS as administrator, but then the RDS process is owned by VMUSER and that's not good enough. I also manage to run RDS as DOM\Tewr, but then not as an administrator. I have Added DOM\Tewr as an administrator on VM, but thats not good enough becuase the process is still not run as administrator. How can I run the RDS process as DOM\Tewr and "As Administrator", while logged on in windows as VMDOMAIN\VM? (note: I have tried creating an account with the same credentials / password as VMUSER, as hinted in the ms article above, but with no luck...)

• JBoss database connection pool configuration

  I am facing an connection pool issue in my clustered JBoss installation. From time to time one of my connection pools will hit the roof and I get a lot of these in my logfile. java.sql.SQLException: No ManagedConnections available within configured blocking timeout ( 30000 [ms] ); The odd thing is that I can see in the JMX console that the ConnectionCount hit the roof, but at the same time InUseConnectionCount is often quite small. The problem will resolve itself after a couple of minutes but during recovery phase my application will not work (for obvious reasons). The question is if this indicate an error in the configured timeouts of the connections (I pretty much use defaults), or if my pool is simply too small to handle the peaks. Under normal operation I would say I use ~40% of the configured max number of connections. The reason I just don't increase the max number of connection is that if I actually used up all connections I suspect that InUseConnectionCount would hit the roof. Hence I suspect I might have more issues than just a too small pool size. Maybe InUseConnectionCount has decreased at the time I check jmx-console and it actually do hit the roof? I tend to collect data every second minute. Any hints are more than welcome.

• How to stop Vista from auto changing video resolution?

  I have new Acer Aspire Revo R3600 computer with Vista pre-installed. The computer has NVidia video adapter. While connecting 17" LCD monitor (LG L1742S) via VGA cable it works fine, and I can change the resolution of the display from max 1920*1024 down to some other value, and after reboot the settings are restored correctly. But when I'm connecting bigger full HD 1920*1080 display (LG E2250) via VGA cable then every boot I have the same problem: I see boot progress window, then I see MS logo, then I see welcome screen then I start to see desktop and suddenly monitor switch off and show me the message about unsupported frequency of input signal As I understand Vista tries to auto-change resolution and sets wrong parameters. I've tried to boot into safe mode and into low-resolution mode, every time I have the same problem: Vista boot-up and suddenly monitor stops working. I've tried to connect this monitor to notebook with Windows XP and has no problem to work with this display on its native resolution. How can I disable this display resolution auto-changer in Vista? Or maybe there is another workaround?

• How to get desired FireFox last tab behavior?

  All tabs should be the same; so if any of the have a 'close' button, they all should, including the last tab. I see no reason that a tab's close button should suddenly vanish simply b/c that tab has become the last one open. If I have N tabs open, and park the mouse over the left-most tab's close button, this vanishing close button trick means now I have to make a large mouse move to get to the app's close button. Unsat. Mouse moves = too many milliseconds wasted. Closing the last tab should NOT take me to my home page, or any other page whatsoever. I want the browser to close with the last tab. I do not expect or want "new tab" behavior when I click a Close button. Now, I've gone into about:config and played with browser.tabs.closeWindoWithLastTab, but this setting oversteps its purpose; while it does make the browser close, for some inexplicable reason, it also suppresses the last tab's close button! I have tried the "last tab close button" add-on, and while this does restore the close button, the add-on oversteps by taking the liberty of turning closeWindowWithLastTab off. Is there some way out of this pickle? Is it too hard to just code things to provide simple, orthogonal actions, so that everybody can config the UI to their liking, and not just to a few pre-fab configurations that the developers think everyone should like? • Is there a simple context-menu add-in that could make-up for the Windows-7 status bar deficiency?

  Edit: I initially asked about free disk space and selected item size. It has since been pointed out that the selected item size summary is still availiable natively in the details pane. I had read elsewhere (wikipedia) that this was removed along with disk free space, which is not the case. Only free disk space has been completely removed. Selection size is still availiable. Is there a context menu add-in out there that could show the free disk space of the relevant drive, when you right click? This would go a long way to compensating for one of the only steps backward I’ve discovered in Windows 7 so far. I doubt anyone had created one specifially for this need before windows 7 because this information was previously easily accessible in the status bar. I thought about creating one, but it has been a while since I have messed with the Shell API, and I know there are coders out there who could do it faster and better. If you’ve heard of one, or know of something else to make-up for this Microsoft misstep, I’d appreciate hearing about it. If MS were listing to the community they would already have a powertoy or add-in of some kind to un-break this. (they could release it unsupported even), as there seem to be many power users that are extremely annoyed by this feature removal decision. If anyone has seen something, please post it here. As it has been only 4 days since official Windows 7 release, I'll wait at least a week to chose an answer. Here's a picture of protoype screenshot: SU question 19232 is related.

• Unified inbox shows twice on Thunderbird

  I'm using Thunderbird 24. If I show folders in Unified mode, my inbox folder shows up twice. If I choose the "All" folders mode, I see only one inbox. The issue started when I was using Ubuntu 12.04, but now I'm on Fedora 19. (I have migrated the folders on /home). I do remember having it not-duplicated, but then it started while still on Ubuntu. I noticed it when using the Converation plugin, but I had previously used the plugin without it happening. I have disabled the plugin and it persists. What I have tried If I close Thunderbird, rename the .thunderbird folder on my /home to something else, then it will create a new config profile, I have to set up everything again, and then it works as expected, see images below: Before resetting Unified vs All Folders After resetting Unified vs All Folders (I'm trying to avoid resetting the profile and creating a fresh new one, because the server -- MS Exchange -- doesn't support IMAP labels, so I'd lose all the tags on my messages, and I have organized it based on tags instead of folder).

• Datastage 8.7 installs fine on Window7 without any errors but it can not launch localhost:9080 web console

  When I launch the web console, I get page can not be displayed error. What I have tried so far: I have re-installed DS about 7 times, and each time, I get same errors. I added entries in etc/hosts file for local host and my host name. I have turned off firewall. My hardware/software setup. My host system is window8.1. My vmware workstation is 7. The guest os is windows 7 enterprise x64. I have installed 10g, and given dba role to public. I have installed VS 5, and ms visual c++ 2010 express. I have installed msxml. IE version is 10. Firewall is off. My internet works fine It passed all the DS requirement tests and install completed successfully. When I launch my vmware guest instance, I do get SQL5000c error upon boot which I have tried to ignore in some installs and in some, I used db2systray -clean command to get rid of it. But that has not helped solve the webconsole connect failure to my host. I have spent over 2 weeks exclusively on this issue and badly need some help.

So i want to turn off netflow(but don't want to this,monitoring is highly important for me), but it will give me only 10-20% ? • Applications are being opened by IE instead of running normally

  I rewrote the Question to add everything that i tried so far. Many of my applications are being opened by Internet Explorer. (not all) For example when I run Firefox.exe (from shortcut) I get IE run instead, with the following URL http: // %22d/ Browser/firefox.exe%22 (I added spaces to prevent link creation) the shortcut target is: "D:\Browser\firefox.exe" when I attempted to open firefox.exe from it's folder the results were the same as the previous one I attempted to open it by cmd, so i navigated with cmd to the FF path then wrote: firefox.exe the was the same except that the URL was: http: // Firefox.exe/ when i jsut write firefox the result URL was: http: // Firefox/ (is it some kind of parameter or something??) trying the same with chrome resulted the same results as the previous tests. I tried creating a new user (adminstartor) but the problem still there. I tried every registry key with exe on it (not sure if i tried them all) no change I tried removing IE but came back by itself somehow, meanwhile IE is removed, FF and its fellow apps gave me open with window I tried reinstalling the applications but it just no use. Time Line: (as requested from @Daredev) I don't know when it happened because the computer is for the company i work for and it was like that since i got it. (The IT there gave up on the problem lon time ago!). applications were installed already are "firefox" and "XPS viewer" . applications were working after the problem everything except what uses browsing (MS help viewer, XPS viewer, firefox-even I've re installed it-, opera, chrome) that what I thought but after installing Maxthon , comodoDragon this theory was blown away. system info: 1- windows xp professional service pack 3 2- system fully patched: Yes 3- anti-virus up to date: Yes 4- same behavior when booting into safe mode: Yes

• Unable to delete a file or take ownership on Win7x64

  I'm a developer and as part of the build process, a Microsoft dll is copied to a certain folder. That file copy is now failing as the target can't be overwritten. I decided to delete it by hand (using an admin account but a non-elevated explorer) so browsed to the folder and attempted a delete. This failed (Require permission from the Administrator). The same applies when using an elevated explorer. So I tried Properties-Security-Advanced-Ownership The current owner is showing as Unable to display current owner. I can't take ownership (a simple Access Denied message with no elaboration). Elevated Command Prompt/PowerShell don't help either (both give an Access Denied in their own way). Process explorer shows no open handles on the file. Eventually, I booted to linux and deleted the file but what I'd like to know is what caused it? Security Essentials had no issues with the file. It's digitally signed by MS and the signatures match.

• Is it possible to recover from the Windows 8 refresh feature?

  The intention of the Windows 8 RTM (released version) Refresh feature is to restore the system to the way it was when I first installed. It didn't though. Almost everything that came in the start-screen (not a menu any more) is gone, not just third party apps I installed, but EVERYTHING other than the icon for internet explorer, and the icon for the store, and the desktop, were wiped. Out of the box Windows 8 had a pretty large list of things installed, and it seems that the Refresh feature wipes all of them out. Is it possible to really get the system back to a fresh install state, or should I just re-install from the DVD I made? (I have access to Windows 8 RTM, legally through the MS Action Pack subscription.) I suspect that if I create a new account, I might get a new desktop with a default set of icons, but I'm hoping it might be possible to do this without using a different login. The second problem with Windows 8 refresh is it seems to trash the ACL's on my C: drive, taking all permissions away for access to the C: drive, making nothing on it visible or readable to my primary and only login account. I believe it might be possible to undo the damage done by the "refresh" with some judicious use of icacls from the command prompt.

• Will Windows repair my multi-boot when I format the 1st physical partition with boot sector?

  Due to historical reasons I got a laptop with Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008R2 partitions. (boot from external wasn´t that viable) Nothing (Windows Repair, bootrec /whateveroption) worked when I restored only the Windows 7 and WS2k8 with Acronis TrueImage. Don´t ask me through what idiotic error messages I went during repair tries. (Wrong Windows version,...) So I grudgingly restored all three - with the little additional excursion that I thought changing the active partition to the Windows 7 partition would move the boot sector and let me format the Vista part... Oh no. Seems too logical for MS. (Dunno what I changed, but today it will let me format!) So the real question is: Will formatting the Vista part trash things again beyond comprehension or will Windows Repair bring back the boot rec and remove Vista from the boot options? Or should I just erase all the files to avoid trashing the boot? Where will the boot rec be (after repair) when I format the Vista? On 1st or 2nd partition? And if I get drunk and install Windows 8.1 on the 1st, will anything work? ;-) Thanks

• Debugging methods for Windows XP hangups

  I experience occasional 'freezes' on my desktop machine (Windows XP SP3). I've tried the normal debugging methods I know (watching Process Explorer, running ProcMon (hard to get a good trace because the hangups are so intermittent). Are there any additional system debugging methods that might be useful in discovering what would cause these hang ups? While this question is more about debugging methods than the actual issue itself (which is probably more of a superuser question), the symptoms of the hangup are: All windows become non-responding. Can be brought the foreground, but do not repaint. Taskbar/explorer windows are non-responsive Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ctrl+Shift+Esc, Win+L, do not do anything (though the actions are queued up, and when the system unhangs, they are performed) Oddly enough, usually I can still scroll through the current page I have open in Google Chrome, but I cannot change tabs. Hangup can happen when I have tons of apps open, but also when I only have Outlook, Chrome, and MS Communicator (plus all the corporate spyware). Usually the hang lasts between 30sec and 3 minutes or so. After which I can continue working as usual.

  I have two voip providers, one free an the other paid. The free provider only allows local calls to certain area codes, so I need to fall back to the the paid provider if a call fails. At the moment, I have the following context in my extensions.conf file: [globals] ; freephoneline.ca PRIMARY_PROVIDER=fpl ; voip.ms SECONDARY_PROVIDER=voipms [local] exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,1,Set(CALLERID(name)=${OUTGOING_NAME}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Dial(SIP/${EXTEN}@${PRIMARY_PROVIDER}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Set(CALLERID(num)=${OUTGOING_NUMBER}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Dial(SIP/1${EXTEN}@${SECONDARY_PROVIDER}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Hangup() I checked the logs and noticed that the free provider responds with NOANSWER if a call is not allowed (Even though it plays a message). What I want is to: Try calling the ${PRIMARY_PROVIDER} first. If NOANSWER is returned by provider (not that the callee did not answer), then call with ${SECONDARY_PROVIDER} How can I modify my dial plan to get the desired results? EDIT : The primary provider is freephoneline.ca, and I'm using asterisk v1.8.2.3-2

• Growing a small hosting company [closed]

  We currently have a few servers, 1 WHM VPS (2GB), 1 MS SQL VPS (2 GB), and 1 IIS VPS (2GB). The VPS servers are doing fine as far as uptime and response times but we would like to add the following features. 1) monitoring with load statistics 2) failover I have looked a Zabbix, Zenoss, Nagios, and a couple of other cloud solutions like monitor.us and watchdog from Zerigo. Ideally for the monitoring solution. Our current hosting company suggested we get a dedicated server or VPS and install load balancing software (not sure I like that idea). I've looked into Rackspace and Amazon load balancers which seem like the most feasible solutions for load balancers. Does anybody have any input on the monitoring and load balancing products I'm looking into? Monitoring should monitor uptime as well as give reports on memory usage, disk usage, processor usage, and which processes/websites/users are responsible for the load. It would be ideal if the load balancer worked with any IP. Not sure if either Rackspace or Amazon load balancers would allow load balancing with servers outside their datacenter. Thank you.

• Monitor programs accessing my keyboard?

  As of a few days ago, my computer is behaving 'erratically'. When I am typing, my pointer will randomly move to another place in the text and start typing a semi-random string of characters. ("gvyfn" is common; It has typed this about 8 times whilst I composed all the text above) It often highlights part of or all the text and overwrites it. It sometimes goes into loops of pressing Control-alt-delete down, bringing up Windows 7 menu thing. It sometimes even messes with mouseclicks; they have unexpected results, like requesting admin priveledges from applications, instead of switching to their window. I believe this is because it is holding a alt-function key down. This behaviour happens periodically, in waves. It might subside for an hour, then continue to haunt me. I believe it to be a virus or malicious program. My anti-virus (Symantec) and multiply MS rootkit removers could not find anything suspicious. I've noticed that sometimes it re-maps keys, and types gibberish when I press certain keys (though no pattern is evident). I believe a malicious program has installed a keyhook on my computer. I'm wondering... - Is there a way to let me view which programs are emulating keystrokes? - Is there a way to view what keyboard hooks are installed? (I'm also at liberty to try any other techniques to remove this blasted thing. It is easily the most fustrating computer problem I've encountered). Thanks!

• HTMLUNIT Facebook javascript warning

  Hi I am trying to create simple application that would be able to search people on facebook using given e-mail. I am already able to log into an account using the HTMLunit tool and even create a page, which should throw result of my search. But when I try to print the result as XML the file is missing some blocks of javascript results (I can tell that they are missing by comparing file created by my application and source code, that can be viewed by using IE) Is there any way around this? I just need to get the same result IE's showsource function does. Thanks a lot.   Hi all, i'm running an Apache Tomcat 6.0.20 / MySQL 5.1.37-lubuntu / sun-java6-jdk /sun-java6-jre / sun-java6-bin on my local machine using Ubuntu 9.10 as OS.   If I move the application resources to a UserControl resources everythgin runs groovy. I still don't understand why. I noticed that my application object MyApp did more than inherit from Application it loaded an XAML for the main template and connected all the plumbing. • Edit Contact code worked in 1.6 but doesn't work on Droid 2.1?

  Hi All, I had some fairly simple code in my app to invoke Edit Contact activity on a known good contact index that worked in Android 1.6 but is broken for me now in Android 2.1 on the Droid. There's actually quite a few of these requests over at least the few days - so it naturally piqued my interested. Searching Google simply seems to produce a very long list of websites which make their Apache access logs publicly available... Is this some weird indication that we're being targeted? And by who?

• Create a Customized Tab on the Office 2010 Ribbon

  Some MS Office users were put off a bit by the Ribbon feature in 2007 for being cumbersome and confusing. Today we look at a cool new feature in Office 2010 that allows you to create your own custom tabs with specific commands for easier document creation. Create a Customized Tab In our example we’re using Word, but you can create a custom tab in the other Office apps as well. To do so, right-click on the Ribbon and select Customize the Ribbon. The Word Options screen opens up and from here you can manage a lot of customization options. We want to create a new customized tab, so click on the New Tab button.   Now give it a name… Now just drag the commands you want to add from the left column over to your new custom group. You have every command available to choose from. You can select specific groups or all commands from the dropdown menu on the left. That is all there is to it…now you have your own customized tab with the commands you use most often to help you work more efficiently. In this example We didn’t add a whole lot of commands, but you can customize it with as many as you need. You can also create other tabs with different sets of commands too. When you create a customized tab in one application, it’s only going to be in that app. For example if you create on in Word, it’s not going to show in Excel as commands differ between apps. If you want a custom tab in another Office app you’ll need to create one for it. Another very cool thing you can do is export the customizations to use on another machine or pass them to a coworker. To export the customizations, go to the Customize Ribbon section and at the bottom of the right field click Import/Export then Export all customizations. Then save the file to a location on your hard drive.   To import the settings to another machine, go into Ribbon Customizations and select Import customizations file… then browse the the file you exported. You’ll be prompted to confirm you want to import he customizations… After confirming the choice now you’ll see the customization show up on the other machine. This is very handy if you work on several machines throughout the day and want to easily bring your customized tabs with you. If you find yourself using a lot of specific commands throughout the day, creating your own customized tab will help access them more quickly. Parallel LINQ (PLINQ) PLINQ nada mais é que uma implementação de programação paralela ao nosso famoso LINQ, através de métodos de extensão. O LINQ foi lançado com a versão 3.0 na plataforma .NET, apresentando uma maneira muito mais fácil e segura de manipular coleções IEnumerable ou IEnumerable<T>. O que veremos hoje é a “alteração” do LINQ to Objects, que é direcionado a coleções de objetos em memória. A principal diferença entre o LINQ to Objects “normal” e o paralelo é que na segunda opção o processamento é realizado tentando utilizar todos os recursos disponíveis para tal, obtendo uma melhora significante de performance. CUIDADO: Nem todas as operações ficam mais rápidas utilizando recursos de paralelismo. Não deixe de ler a seção “Performance” abaixo. ParallelEnumerable Tudo que a gente precisa para este post está organizado na classe ParallelEnumerable. Esta classe contém os métodos que iremos utilizar neste post, e muito mais: AsParallel AsSequential AsOrdered AsUnordered WithCancellation WithDegreeOfParallelism WithMergeOptions WithExecutionMode ForAll … O exemplo mais básico de como executar um código PLINQ é utilizando o métodos AsParallel, como o exemplo: var source = Enumerable.Range(1, 10000); var evenNums = from num in source.AsParallel() where Compute(num) > 0 select num; Algo tão interessante quanto esta facilidade é que o PLINQ não executa sempre de forma paralela. Dependendo da situação e da análise de alguns itens no cenário de execução, talvez seja mais adequado executar o código de forma sequencial – e nativamente o próprio PLINQ faz esta escolha.  É possível forçar a execução para sempre utilizar o paralelismo, caso seja necessário. Utilize o método WithExecutionMode no seu código PLINQ. Lembre-se de fazer as perguntas básicas: Eu tenho trabalho suficiente que justifique utilizar paralelismo? Mesmo com o overhead do PLINQ, vamos ter algum benefício? Por este motivo, visite este link e conheça todos os aspectos, antes de utilizar os recursos disponíveis. Conclusão Utilizar recursos de paralelismo é ótimo, aumenta a performance, utiliza o investimento realizado em hardware – tudo isso sem custo de produtividade.
