• How to add a daemon to a quickly project

  Currently I'm developing an application with quickly which is divided in two parts: A graphical UI where the user could configure some things, and a daemon which do the most work in the background. I started with the UI, to create some windows for settings and so on. Now I want to start coding the daemon, but I have no clue how to implement the daemon in my quickly project. Could I simply paste the files of the daemon in project folder or is there an implementation method for adding new files to a quickly project? Or do I have to create a new project and merge them together?

• What are the benefits of Android way of "saving memory" - explicitly passing Context objects everywhere?

  Turned out, this question is not easy to formulate for me, but let's try. In Android, pretty much any UI object depends on a Context, and has defined lifetime. It also can destroy and recreate UI objects and even whole application process at any time, and so on. This makes coding asynchronous operations correctly not straightforward. (and sometimes very cumbersome) But I never have seen a real explanation, why it's done that way? There are other OSes, including mobile OSes (iOS, for example), that don't do such things. So, what are the wins of Android way (Activities & Contexts)? Does that allow Android applications to use much less RAM, or maybe there are other benefits?

  I did a small coding mistake and google indexed my site wrongly. this is correct form: https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/TENGA-CUP-DOUBLE-HOLE but google index my site like this : https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/cart.aspx first I fixed the problem and made a site map and only correct link in it. now I checked webmaster tools and I see this; Total indexed 513 Not selected 544 Blocked by robots 0 so I think this can be caused by double indexes and they looks not selected makes my data not selected. I want to know how to fix this "https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/cart.aspx" links. should I fix in code or should I connect to google to reindex my site. If I should redirect wrong/duplicate links to correct ones, what the way should be? thanks for your time in advance.

• How do you stay motivated for hobby projects?

  I started seriously programming as a hobbiest, student and then intern about 4 years ago and I've always done small projects on the side as a learning exercise. Schools over now though, and I spend my days at work as a software developer. I would still love to do projects on the side to learn about areas in computer science that I'm not exposed to at work, but I've noticed that after 8 hours of starring at an IDE it's far to tempting to veg out. Any time I do get up the gumption to work on something for a few hours lately it's gotten left by the wayside. Anyone have any advice for sticking with side projects when you spend most of your day coding?

• As a programmer what single discovery has given you the greatest boost in productivity?

  This question has been inspired by my recent discovery/adoption of distributed version control. I started using it (mercurial) just because I liked the idea of still being able to make commits at times when I couldn't connect to the central server. I never expected it would give me a large boost in general productivity, but a pleasant side effect I discovered was that making a new clone every time I started a new task and giving that clone a descriptive folder name is extremely effective at keeping me on task resulting is a noticeable productivity increase. So as a programmer what single discovery has given you the greatest boost in productivity? Extra respect for answers which involve tools or practices that aren't so obvious from the outside!

• Ideal laptop specs for a Computer Science Masters student? [closed]

  I have a HP pavillion core 2 duo 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and it is painful to use this machine for any kind of coding. Eclipse (especially Juno) literally takes 5 minutes to load. And even after that, everything is lagy. Apart from school stuff, I also use my computer as a television. I watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube etc in 720p, and this laptop gets hot as hell and the fans are loud enough to wake somebody up from deep sleep. I DON'T use my laptop for Gaming or Video/Photo Editing. I'm looking to buy a new laptop (in which most widely used IDEs would work smoothly and playing hi-def videos wouldn't be too much for the machine to handle) any suggestions (on hardware specs) would be greatly appreciated. • Futures/Monads vs Events

  So, the question is quite simple: in an application framework, when performance impact can be ignored (10-20 events per second at max), what is more maintainable and flexible to use as a preferred medium for communication between modules - Events or Futures/Promices/Monads ? Its often being said, that Events (pub/sub, mediator) allow loose-coupling and thus - more maintainable app... My experience deny this: once you have more that 20+ events - debugging becomes hard, and so is refactoring - because it is very hard to see: who, when and why uses what. Promices (i'm coding in javascript) are much uglier and dumber, than Events. But: you can clearly see connections between function calls, so application logic becomes more straight-forward. What i'm afraid. though, is that Promices will bring more hard-coupling with them... p.s: the answer does not have to be based on JS, experience from other functional languages is much welcome.

  For an internal training session, I'm trying to come up with a simple scenario that illustrates how unit testing leads to better design, by forcing you to think about things like coupling before you start coding. The idea is that I get the participants to code something first, without considering unit testing, then we do it again, but considering unit testing. Hopefully the code produced second time round should be more decoupled and maintainable. I'm struggling to come up with a scenario that can be coded quickly, yet can still demonstrate how unit testing can lead to better overall design.

• How do I make the correct career decision in regards to product manager/QA vs programmer?

  I'm curious about how to approach the issue of whether I should focus on programming or on QA/testing/product management. I know that the latter seems like a broad category( if so, think of it as "general IT support" for now). At the moment I'm stronger in QA/prod. mgt ; however I'd like to switch more to programming, and I see I may have this opportunity. Wouldn't it be easier to switch to QA/prod. mgt in the future, if I go into programming now; rather than trying the reverse-order(i.e. if I decided later to go into coding.. say around mid-30s then it'd likely be harder). Just looking for any advice or tips about how to see more clearly. Part of me is scared I can't handle the programming side, but part of me says since there's demand and I'm interested that it's still worth a shot.

  I am looking to get the following - Basic code review to make sure they follow the guidelines imposed. Security code analysis to make sure there are no loopholes. No performance bottlenecks by doing a load test etc. We have lot of code coming in from third parties and is becoming laborious to manage code reviews and hence looking to see if others employ such practices. I understand that it may be a concern for some and would raise the question "Well, who is going to make sure the agency is doing their job right?" But basically I am just looking for a third party who can hold all vendor code to the same standards.

  We are on the stage of planning a CakePHP project. It is a relatively a big project for us, as a developer+project manager, I want to hire someone to work with me. But what I really want is to spend less time on actual coding, without losing control of the code quality. Users can now do iterative development against their Java Cloud Service instance in addition to testing against local and remote WebLogic Server installations. Some details of the cloud tools are below: Templates and wizards to create projects and server configurations for Oracle Java Cloud Service Develop applications to run and deploy to the cloud, including Oracle ADF. Check cloud server runtime and deployment logs in new log analyzers Test applications before deployment with integrated whitelist scans. Whitelist tools support as-you-type validation, project build validation, and on demand scans to highlight coding violations.   I work in a company going through a downsizing process. It is assumed that a lot of "let go" developers jobs will eventually be outsourced. Some of those programmers had some design to do. Is it possible to outsource both design and creation/coding properly? I feel that by outsourcing design, we lose any in-house capability of really "owning" the code. It will be very difficult to maintain. Also we'll have a hard time ensuring a proper development. How can I address those issues?

  Just to be straightforward, I am completely new to many aspects of coding and am searching for different specs and guidelines to aid me on my journey to crafting a wonderful game in Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4. I had some recent thoughts about the possibility of creating an environment in a game that interacts with weather (Rain, Snow, Storms) Is it possible to make an environment that can simulate weather changes in a game? I wrote notes on this for weeks now. I was thinking that an increase on environments occlusion maps was necessary for creating the effect of rain on windows, as well as making a flowing liquid surface on windows that is only visible in rain. I was also considering the idea of additive bump-maps on meshes for snow, to simulate accumulation. Are these elements dynamic in Unreal 4? Can I implement them?
