• Do you think that exposure to BASIC can mutilate your mind? [closed]

  It is practically impossible to teach good programming to students that have had a prior exposure to BASIC: as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration -- Edsger W. Dijkstra I have deep respect to Dijkstra but I don't agree with everything he said/wrote. I disagree specially with this quote on linked paper wrote 35 years ago about the Dartmouth BASIC implementation. Many of my coworkers or friends programmers started with BASIC, questions below have answers that indicate many programmers had their first experience on programming at BASIC. AFAIK many good programmers started at BASIC programming. I'm not talking about Visual Basic or other "modern" dialects of BASIC running on machines full of resources. I'm talking about old times BASIC running on "toy" computer, that the programmer had to worry about saving small numbers that need not be calculated as a string to save a measly byte because the computer had only a few hundreds of them, or have to use computed goto for lack of a more powerful feature, and many other things which require the programmer to think much before doing something and forcing the programmer to be creative. If you had experience with old time BASIC on a machine with limited resources (have in mind that a simple micro-controller today has much more resources than a computer in 1975, do you think that BASIC help your mind to find better solutions, to think like an engineer or BASIC drag you to dark side of programming and mutilated you mentally? Is good to learn a programming language running on a computer full of resources where the novice programmer can do all wrong and the program runs without big problems? Or is it better to learn where the programmer can't go wrong? What can you say about the BASIC have helped you to be a better/worse programmer? Would you teach old BASIC running on a 2KB (virtual) machine to a coming programmer? Sure, only exposure to BASIC is bad. Maybe you share my opinion that modern BASIC doesn't help too much because modern BASIC, as long other programming languages, gives facilities which allow the programmer doesn't think deeper. • Subversion 1.7 on 12.04 precise: libsasl error, compiling from source?

  Background: I am a longtime Gentoo user, and this is my first time using Ubuntu (installed on a VM to avoid compiling everything from scratch). I am familiar with a Linux environment but somewhat unfamiliar with Ubuntu. I am trying to install Subversion 1.7 on Ubuntu and saw this post: Where can I find a Subversion 1.7 binary? The above post recommends using the PPA ppa:dominik-stadler/subversion-1.7. I also found the PPA ppa:svn/ppa from another link. They both cause problems for me. The issue is that any svn operation using the remote server causes the following error: svn: E170001: Unable to connect to a repository at URL 'svn+ssh://my_repo' svn: E170001: Could not create SASL context: generic failure: No such file or directory This seems to arise from a recent bug involving SVN dependency on the libsasl library, as documented by Debian users here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=683555 and also Mac users here: https://trac.macports.org/ticket/34861 Resolution seems to involve either updating the cyrus-sasl or libsasl library to a newer version (neither of which is in the latest apt packages), or compiling subversion without SASL support. As a Gentoo user I started looking into how to compile svn from source, but it looks way more complicated on Ubuntu than I'm used to and I'm not sure what the canonical way is. My questions: Is there an obvious fix for this problem that I am overlooking? Is there a way to update the dependencies for SVN to something that works through using synaptic or apt-get? If I want to compile from scratch, how do I use the sources in the PPA instead of downloading my own source copy (i.e. the PPA has both binary and sources?)

• Not able to connect to a mac client from a windows machine

  I have a Server.exe file which I use to connect to a mac.(I am fairly confident that server.exe is not buggy ).When i try to do this I get this often cited error "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it " I did search some existing questions about this on the forum and it looked like this might be a firewall issue.FWIW I dont have any firewall set on my mac (client) and on my server machine (Windows 7 64 bit ) under the firewall settings I have :- Incoming connections : Block all connections to programs that are not on the list of allowed programs. Active Domain Networks: Same domain as the one which my client is on. Windows Firewire State: Off. Do you think i need to change something here?Can someone help me with next steps?

• Dual boot Windows XP 32 bit and Windows 7 64-bit

  My system config is AMD phenom-II x2 550 processor, 2x2gb(800fsb)ddr2 zion ram, gigabyte ga-m61pme-s2 motherboard, 160gb sata hdd. Now I am planning to install Windows XP sp3 (32-bit) and Windows 7 (64bit). My first questions are: Is my system enough for the above mentioned two OSes? Which OS one should be installed first on local disk c: drive? I have both XP and vista drivers on separate disks as provided with my motherboard but don't have drivers for win-7, so can I use my vista driver for win-7?

• Doubts about Cloud Infrastructure

  Maybe a little more of the same questions that others have asked but wanted to clarify my doubt, for some years run my hosting company (reseller of esds) and I've done well so far, but I am determined to bring quality and server technology to offer another level. So far I have understood that there is a difference between cloud and cluster servers because the cluster function as load balancers that distribute in different servers roles and use the servers less overloaded in the cloud is the union of multiple servers and then the same is vitualized unlike the cluster that is allowed to use the resources of the CPU and RAM servers in the virtualized environment. My approach is to use 3 dedicated servers to create a cloud server, My doubts: Does this type of cloud servers are only reserved for big companies? (Either because the union of the servers is done by hardware or software with high price) What characteristics should these servers meet? Possibly through software which should be used? Available? • Python or Ruby for freelance?

  Hello, I'm Sophia. I have an interest in self-learning either Python, or Ruby. The primary reason for my interest is to make my life more stable by having freelance work = $. It seems that programming offers a way for me to escape my condition of poverty (I'm on the edge of homelessness right now) while at the same time making it possible for me to go to uni. I intend on being a math/philosophy major. I have messed with Python a little bit in the past, but it didn't click super well. The people who say I should choose Python say as much because it is considered a good first language/teaching language, and that it is general-purpose. The people who say I should choose Ruby point out that I'm a very right-brained thinker, and having multiple ways to do something will make it much easier for me to write good code. So, basically, I'm starting this thread as a dialog with people who know more than I do, as an attempt to make the decision. :-) I've thought about asking this in stackoverflow, but they're much more strict about closing threads than here, and I'm sort of worried my thread will be closed. :/ TL;DR Python or Ruby for freelance work opportunities ($) as a first language? Additional question (if anyone cares to answer): I have a personal feeling that if I devote myself to learning, I'd be worth hiring for a project in about 8 weeks of work. I base this on a conservative estimate of my intellectual capacities, as well as possessing motivation to improve my life. Is my estimate necessarily inaccurate? random tidbit: I'm in Portland, OR I'll answer questions that are asked of me, if I can help the accuracy and insight contained within the dialog.

• Drivers for NVIDIA 520M not working in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am aware that this is nominally a duplicate question, however I've read the other questions and haven't been able to resolve my problem after many hours and attempts, so please don't delete it. Additionally, it seems like many answers to the other questions are specifically dependent on certain situations. My situation being different from the others I found represented, here's my question. Until last night, I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed with Wubi, and it ran ok, though slowly and with occasional hangs. So I partitioned the drive and installed 12.04 in its own partition. Now when I start it, I am stuck using 2D. I believe this is an NVIDIA bug. My NVIDIA card is a GT 520M and my machine has Optimus. Additional Drivers only displays my wireless driver. Going to System Settings Details Graphics shows Driver:Unknown, Experience:Standard. I downloaded the driver from the NVIDIA website, and ran the installer with no errors, except that the "distribution-provided pre-install script failed". After rebooting, my screen was stuck at 640X480, which was fixed by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf However, I still was stuck in 2D, and nothing else had changed either. A thread suggested something called Bumblebee. I tried that, and when I ran optirun firefoxI got a frozen blank screen. Following another suggestion, I checked the BIOS to try and disable Optimus. I found and ran myriad other commands to try and fix the problem and nothing changed. Now I have just done a clean re-install of Ubuntu. From there, I: Installed all the updates Downloaded the NVIDIA driver Installed it Got screen stuck at 640X480, fixed in xorg.conf. To recap the problem: I can't get the NVIDIA drivers working I am stuck using 2D I'm an idiot I think if the first one is solved, the solution to the second will naturally follow. If you need me to provide any other information, I'd be happy to. • VPN Split Tunneling - Pros and Cons and how to achieve?

  Well this is the dilemma, I want remote clients to connect to my network and only route local access through the VPN. This is split tunneling, the client uses its internet connection for all other internet requests and the VPN tunnel to my network for local requests. There's a couple of issues that arise: split tunneling in Windows is achieved by unticking an option which reads "Use default gateway on remote network" in the TCP/IP settings of the client VPN connection. At any point the user can tick it and route all his internet traffic through my network eating away at my bandwidth and being cloaked by my IP address. This is unacceptable. Issue number 2 is that if the client is split tunneling, he becomes a gateway between the internet and my network, this is also unacceptable. My questions are: how does one achieve split tunneling serverside? And is the latter issue a valid con worthy of worry? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

• Best Practice: iDRAC & NIC Selection

  I am setting up a new Dell server with iDRAC 6 Express. My options for the NIC are: 1) Shared 2) Shared with failover to LOM2 3) Shared with failover to all LOMs The server has 2x dual-nic PCI-E cards (total of 4 nics) My questions are thusly: -What is best practice for setting this up? Is there any reason why I would not want option 3? -If the NIC is being used for both iDRAC and the OS, (there is no dedicated iDRAC nic), does this ever cause any kinds of issues for either iDRAC or the OS? • Redirect HTTP requests based on subdomain address without changing accessed URL?

  Let's say I have a domain: www.mydomain.com And I ordered a new domain: abc.newdomain.com Both domains are hosted in the same ISP, so currently requests to either of those addresses result in the same page being shown. I want to redirect all requests to abc.newdomain.com to folder /wp so that when users access abc.newdomain.com they would see whatever is inside folder /wp without seeing the URL change. Questions: 1) How can I achieve this using .htaccess? 2) How can I prevent users from accessing directly /wp directory (meaning that www.mydomain.com/wp would be blocked)?

• How to use router QoS?

  N00b question. How exactly does one use router quality of service settings? I've read up on it a bit but I'm still not exactly sure how to use it. So, my real questions are these: Generally, how does QoS work? How would one use it, say, to guarantee smooth performance in latency sensitive application (cough online gaming cough)? Performance for that sort of stuff bombs out on our connection when somebody is uploading files. I apologize if this is kind of sprawling. Suggestions to clean it up / edits welcome.

• Have a service start on startup with Ubuntu

  I'm not clear on how to start a service when the server boots, I read on some of the other questions asked about adding the script to /etc/init.d, but It's just one line that I need to execute in the commandline: sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon restart But I have a few issues with this, firstly, I apparently need to use sudo, and it gives me the following: ngl-server-01:~% sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8) utility, e.g. service avahi-daemon start Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an Upstart job, you may also use the start(8) utility, e.g. start avahi-daemon But when I try just avahi-daemon start I get: Too many arguments Why is this? and how would you start this service?

• Apache + mod_php Ignores SUID?

  Does apache or mod_php cause a SUID flag to be ignored when using the shell_exec command from a web accessed PHP script? I'm trying to allow a web accessible PHP script to rename some files which the apache user does not have write access to. I don't want to give it access to write these, as I only want one controlled script to be able to do this. I'm trying to avoid SUDO and the config needed or the headache/insecurity of using a que called from a privileged users cron, and it seemed like I should be able to use SUID to accomplish this. • Linux laptop encryption

  What are my options for encrypting the /home directories of my Ubuntu laptops? They are currently setup without any encryption and some have /home as a separate partition whilst others don't. Most of these laptops are single-user standalone laptops which are out on the road a lot. Is ecryptfs and the encrypted Private directory good enough or are there better, more secure, options? If somebody got hold of the laptop, how easy would it be for them to gain access to the encrypted files? Similar questions for encrypted lvm, truecrypt and any other solution I may not be aware of.

• Using DD for disk cloning

  There's been a number of questions regarding disk cloning tools (yes, I did search for it) :) and dd has been suggested at least once. I've already considered using dd myself, mainly because ease of use, and that it's readily available on pretty much all run of the mill bootable linux distributions. To my question, what is the best way to use dd for cloning a disk. I don't have much time to go around, and no test-hardware to play with, so I need to be prepared, and it's pretty much a one-shoot chance to get it done. I did a quick google search, and the first result was an apparent failed attempt. Is there anything I need to do after using dd, i.e. is there anything that CAN'T be read using dd? Thanks!

• Top ten security tips for non-technical users

  I'm giving a presentation later this week to the staff at the company where I work. The goal of the presentation is to serve as a refresher/remidner of good practices that can help keep our network secure. The audience is made up of both programmers and non-technical staff, so the presentation is geared for non-technical users. I want part of this presentation to be a top list of "tips". The list needs to be short (to encourage memory) and be specific and relevant to the user. I have the following five items so far: Never open an attachment you didn't expect Only download software from a trusted source, like download.com Do not distribute passwords when requested via phone or email Be wary of social engineering Do not store sensitive data on an FTP server Some clarifications: This is for our work network These need to be "best practices" tips for the end-user, not IT policy We have backups, OS patches, firewall, AV, etc, all centrally managed This is for a small business (less than 25 people) I have two questions: Do you suggest any additional items? Do you suggest any changes to existing items?

• Folder Permissions Apache

  I have a site that will need to store file uploads by the user once logged in. Currently I have a folder with permissions opened up, (777), because that was the only way I could get mkdir() to work. When the user uploads a file, the application creates several directories based on the user, in this directory then eventually stores the file. Couple of questions: How do I setup the permissions on each of these folders and sub folders so that only logged in users to my site have access to them? Is this even possible? Is there a more secure way of storing .pdf, word docs, and text files?

  Hi all, I have a question about using a web site host in my computer, say Computer A, using any web server hosting application e.g : apache. I connect to my website in my very same computer A, and request to download a file of size 1Mb, in otherwords, I am connecting to my own computer and want to download a file in my computer. In addition, my internet access is bound by a proxy server in a way of gateway. The questions are - does the file transfer really exist? Or is it a local file copying between 2 location? Will my data packet go through the proxy, to the internet, and go back to the proxy and return to me? Thanks everyone who are watching this question.

• procfs and youtube flash video

  Up until recently (about 3 months ago), ALL open flash videos had deleted file handles in the procfs virtual folder for the flash plugin, I could see them thus: ps x|grep flash cd /proc/#PROCESS#/fd ls -l cp #FILE# ~/ This still works for the vast majority of flash video, but some YouTube videos no longer keep this open file handle. My questions are: A) Why not? B) Where are these files now stored? C) How can I get this file Yes I know I could probably get a browser plugin, it just annoys me that they are hiding these files so I want to keep doing it the hard way.
