  • I need to create a contest....

    I'm working on a contest where users vote for contestants. Each contestant will have a bio. I was wondering what would be the best way to approach this? Should I do this in php or javascript? Should I use a database to collect data? Should I use sqlite3? If I use sqlite3 how do i install that on my mac? I'm very new to all this but I'm a quick learner. Thanks for any advice.

    I am trying to run a python script which uses a binary file (xFiles.bin.addr_patched) created by a postlinker. However, I am getting this error. File "abc.py", line 74, in ParseCmd shutil.copy(gOptions.inputX, gWorkingXFile) File "/usr/lib/python2.6/shutil.py", line 89, in copy copymode(src, dst) File "/usr/lib/python2.6/shutil.py", line 66, in copymode os.chmod(dst, mode) OSError: [Errno 1] Operation not permitted: 'myPath/xFiles.bin.addr_patched' When I checked the permissions of this xFiles.bin, by ls-l, it shows that -rwxrwxrwx 1 nobody nogroup I presume the error is because this file was created by some other application, the python script I am running does not have access to it. Since I am beginner wrt ubuntu, I don't really know how to fix it. Any suggestions on how to fix this? SOLVED: As one of the answers Suggested : chown username:groupname file name fixes this issue

    I have spent most of my development career writing backend code, or front-end apps for used as daily business tools, by at least semi-skilled staff, e.g. order-tracking, sales capture, etc. That those I helped build peformed their tasks well is comfort enough, but I am still seeking excellence in the building of these kind of apps, versus the more trendy emphasis on slow and sensual interpersonal relationships with the UI. Can anyone recommend reading on this type of application (LOB?) on the web today? Any available examples to study?

  • WPF Custom Navigation Buttons and calling one page from another

    I have a window which contains a Frame which references a 'home' page that has buttons on it. When a button is clicked I want another page to show depending on which button was pressed. I attempted to use NavigationService.Navigate('mynextpage.xaml') and that works however, I want to use a customized navigation panel. I call this.ShowsNavigationUI = false; on my 'home' page but the bar still shows. Is there a way to accomplish what I am trying to do? My page with the frame is a window so I do not know how to disable the Navigation bar there where I guess it is coming from. Further testing shows that the ShowsNavigationUI property is false yet the nav bar shows itself in the parent window once there is a second page to go to (showing the 'home' page in the history. TIA

    Hello Friends, I am working on horizontal menu that will open on top of the screen. Layout is something like following, || < || Menu Item1 || Menu Item2 || Menu Item3 || || I want to put this on top of the screen. It can have more than 3 menu item and it can traverse through previous and next arrow. I started with like this, RelativeLayout ( width - fill_parent) Gallery View ( Here i appended adapter ) There is two problem, - Gallery view contains the space before and after - While scrolling its item gets selected Though its not ideal solution for this.     I'm trying to figure out what this sort of thing is called, and eventually how I can create one in a web browser. It looks like this (screenshot of the first app that came to mind): The specific component/pattern I'm looking for is the two list boxes ("Included Gear" and "Excluded Gear") that represent inclusion/exclusion of items from a set. I'm not really looking for the WPF name (if there is one) but it might be helpful. I am looking for the name of this thingy, if there is one, and if you really want to make my day, you can point me toward a jQuery or YUI way of making one of these dealies in a browser. In case you were wondering, the screenshot is a World of Warcraft gear optimization program. Go figure why it was the first program that came to mind when I was trying to think of an example.

    I would just like to ask what is the difference between user_constraints and user_objects. I have this two database. I run a script on both DB that resulted a unique constraint error. To solve the problem I delete the constraint on user_constraint table for both DB. After that DB1 run without error.. DB2 however failed, I checked the user_constraint for both db and the constraints was deleted. I was asked to check the user_objects.. and found that DB2 has that same constraint_name as the object_name in user_objects table.. Any info regarding their relationship, use, similarites, etc will be appreciated ... Thanks..

  • CMS or roll-yer-own?

    I have a database of software tools and I want to be able to have users rate and comment on the tools, and view the ratings and comments that other users have left. To lower the risk of spammers attacking the site, I would like to be able to restrict comment/rating permissions to those who are logged in. At present, the tools are in a list on a static html page as part of a website that is very "non-interactive"; other than the contact form, there is nowhere that users contribute content to the site. We maintain a wiki (of the standard mediawiki flavour) that users can contribute to, and we also have a Drupal installation as a news site. Does anyone have any experience of creating such a rating/commenting system, and whether it would be better to use Mediawiki or Drupal (or another free CMS?), or to try to create something myself? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Modal forms get in the way of processing

    I’m working on an interface in VB6 to interact with a sound editor to automate certain tasks mainly using the editor’s object handles and activating them through SendMessage/PostMessage. In general it works OK, except that the editor has some dialog boxes that open in modal mode and freeze everything on the interface, including the timers. Is there a practical way to get these dialog boxes to open modeless or to interact with them from the interface after they pop up? I tried an MDI form, but it also freezes along with everything else. The only way to override the modal mode of these boxes is to launch an independent applet beforehand to address the dialog boxes with a timer, but the process is somewhat cumbersome. All I need to do with the dialog boxes is click the OK button or hit the return key.

  • Settings cell selected background view removes backgroundview

  • iPhone Tab Bar App With Registration View

    Hi! I'm a relative newbie on iPhone app development but have successfully created a tab bar app with 4 tab bar items. I would like to have a one-off registration page for users to key-in information when they open the application for the first time. The registration page should load before the view with the selection of tab bar items loads. What is the best way to do this? Also, how do I load a UIView or UIWebView before the tab bar items load?   • How should 4 decimals places behave, being simple yet powerful

    I have a UI question that troubled me on the best method to handle 4 decimal places for prices. In an table already cramped full of data, I would want to simplified the interface to make it not so cluttered. The actual current UI is shown below. http://i41.tinypic.com/bg5tub.jpg The problem is, for a unit price/units/D.Price and Dis.(Discount) to have 4 decimal places ($0.3459) is quite rare but it still happens (5 in 100 entries). This will result a lot of junk decimal places, cluttering up the interface. What is the best solution to this problem? In short, I want to declutter it yet maintain the precision. Is there a definitive list of characters I should avoid? my current list is il10o8B3Evu![]{} Are there any other pairs of characters that are easy to confuse? for special characters I was going to limit myself to those under the number keys, though I know that this differs depending on your keyboards nationality!   • Creative an interactive GUI for a web application

    I have to create a web application (preferably using the Google App Engine) that will allow users to access it through a url link (not a Desktop application). The application graphically looks like a flow chart and each item in the chart can be selected to pull up a video (not in another window). It is recommended that I use Python. I have never made anything for the web before. Is there a best Python GUI API I should use? I've read quite a bit about Django so far I'm not sure if it is the best fit for this or not. Does anyone have any tips for starting this project? Thanks in advance!
