  • Demo application on Windows Azure Platform?

    I need a demo application to demonstrate about Windows Azure Platform. I tried myTODO project , but because it's not updated since Aug/2009, it cannot work properly (even after installing and configuring all needed components) . Very appreciated if you can suggest me an open-source, free project build for Windows Azure Platform, which can run smoothly with VS 2008. This project should not be too simple or too complicated. myTODO's size is the best. C# source code is preferred. Thank you very much, this question is urgent.

  • Align 2 sets of 2D point clouds

    From what I gather, there are two major methods to perform alignment on point clouds, Iterative Closest Point (ICP) and Particle Filtering. What are the advantages of each method? And can someone point me some good tutorials. For what I am currently doing, I think ICP would be easier, I can't seem to find any simple reference implementations online for 2d point sets. Has anyone seen (psuedo)code for ICP with details on the transformation step? Thanks in advance.

  • ASP.NET: Including JavaScript libraries conditionally from CDN

    When developing cloud applications it is still useful to build them so they can run also on local machine without network connection. One thing you use from CDN when in cloud and from app folder when not connected are common JavaScript libraries. In this posting I will show you how to add support for local and CDN script stores to your ASP.NET MVC web application. Our solution is simple. We will add new configuration setting to our web.config file (including cloud transform file of it) and new property to our web application. In master page where scripts are included we will include scripts from CDN conditionally. There is nothing complex, all changes we make are simple ones. 1. Adding new property to web application Although I am using ASP.NET MVC web application these modifications work also very well with ASP.NET Forms. Open Global.asax and add new static property to your application class. public static bool UseCdn {     get     {         var valueString = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["useCdn"];         bool useCdn;           bool.TryParse(valueString, out useCdn);         return useCdn;     } } If you want less round-trips to configuration data you can keep some nullable boolean in your application class scope and load CDN setting first time it is asked. 2. Adding new configuration setting to web.config By default my application uses local scripts. Although my application runs on cloud I can do a lot of stuff without staging environment in cloud. So by default I don’t have costs on traffic when including scripts from application folders. <appSettings>   <add key="UseCdn" value="false" /> </appSettings> You can also set UseCdn value to true and change it to false when you are not connected to network. 3. Modifying web.config cloud transform I have special configuration for my solution that I use when deploying my web application to cloud. This configuration is called Cloud and transform for this configuration is located in web.cloud.config. To make application using CDN when deployed to cloud we need the following transform. <appSettings>   <add key="UseCdn"        value="true"        xdt:Transform="SetAttributes"        xdt:Locator="Match(key)" /> </appSettings> Now when you publish your application to cloud it uses CDN by default. 4. Including scripts in master pages The last thing we need to change is our master page. My solution is simple. I check if I have to include scripts from CDN and if it is true then I include scripts from there. You are free to include scripts from different CDN services if you need. Conclusion As we saw it was very easy to modify our application to make it use CDN for JavaScript libraries in cloud and local scripts when run on local machine. We made only small changes to our application code, configuration and master pages to get different script sources supported. Our application is now more independent from external sources when we are working on it.

    I'm a consultant and I am going to introduce unit tests to all developers at my client site. My goal is to ensure that all new applications should have unit tests for all classes created. The client has a problem with high maintenance costs from fixing bugs in their existing applications. Their applications have a life span from between 5-15 years in which they continuously add new features. I'm quite confident that they will benefit greatly from starting with unit tests. I'm interested in the effect of unit tests on the time and cost of development: How much time will writing unit tests as part of the development process add? How much time will be saved in maintenance activities (testing and debugging) by having good unit tests?

    Hi, I have been wrestling with Amazon's CloudWatch API with limited success. Does anyone know of any good resources (other than amazon's api docs) for using the APIs. I have tried to run them using the PHP library for CloudWatch but get nothing but error codes. I am configuring the GetMetricStatisticsSample.php file as follows: $request = array(); $endTime = date("Y-m-d G:i:s"); $yesterday = mktime (date("H"), date("i"), date("s"), date("m"), date("d")-1, date("Y")); $startTime = date("Y-m-d 00:00:00", $yesterday); $request["Statistics.member.1"] = "Average"; $request["EndTime"] = $endTime; $request["StartTime"] = $startTime; $request["MeasureName"] = "CPUUtilization"; $request["Unit"] = "Percent"; invokeGetMetricStatistics($service, $request); But this returns "Caught Exception: Internal Error Response Status Code: 400 Error Code: Error Type: Request ID: XML:" I have also tried from command line as follows - set JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05 set AWS_CLOUDWATCH_HOME=C:\AmazonWebServices\API_tools\CloudWatch-1.0.0.24 set PATH=%AWS_CLOUDWATCH_HOME%\bin mon-list-metrics but get C:|Program' is not recognized as an internal or external command... any suggestions? cheers

  • What is the difference from the push and pull development models?

    I was reading Extreme Programming Explained, Second Edition and in the chapter 11 "The Theory of Constraints" the authors talk about the old and obsolete "push" development model and the XP way, the "pull" development model. It looks like a quite important concept, but it takes only a very small paragraph and two images that are mere illustrations of the "waterfall" and iterative process, nothing specific about these models except by the image caption. I searched and it doesn't go any further about it in the rest of the book. I couldn't find any further explanations or discussions about it in the Internet either. If the only difference about those is that one is "waterfall" and the other is iterative, them why push and why pull? Does anyone understand what is really the difference between those two and give some good examples?

    I love programming, particularly OOP. My school experience was mostly in Java/OOP, and I had a job for a limited time in Java, Python, and other OOP kind of languages. However, a move necessitated a change in jobs, and what I've ended up with now is a web-development and database intensive job. I may possibly hold this job for several years. My question is, will this limit my choices later on? Will I be able to find another Java / software-development kind of job, or will I be rejected because my experience will be mostly in a different area?

    Hello: I am new to the Amazon EC2 services and I am planning to host a Windows based vm on Amazon. I have lot of fuzziness about AMIs on Amazon. So my first question would be, am I be able to install softwares and frameworks(e.g. Silverlight, .NET, etc) on a existing Windows instance that I select? And if not, how can I create a custom AMI so that I can install these softwares that I need before I submit it to Amamzon and launch? Thanks a lot for your help :) Deeply appriciated

  • Does migrating a site that is 99% several megs of static HTML from Apache to Google App Enging make

    I have a large site of mostly static content, and I have entertained migrating to Google App Engine. I am wondering, not so much if it is possible as whether that is cutting a steak with a screwdriver. I see a way to do it in Django that has a bad design smell. Does migrating a literature site that is largely static HTML from Apache to Google App Engine make sense? I'm not specifically asking for a comparison to Nginx or Cherokee; I am interested in whether migrating from a traditional web hosting solution to a more cloudy type of solution recommends itself.   • Hardware/Software inventory open source projects

    Dear Stackoverflowers I would like to develop a Network Inventory application that works on any operating system. Reports on every possible resource attacehd to a network. Reports all pertinent details of hardware and software. Thats (and i hate to use the phrase) my "End Game". However I am running before i can crawl here. I have no experience of this type of development, e.g. discovering a computers hardware and software settings. I've spent almost two weeks googling and come up short! :-(. So I am turning to you to ask these questions:- My first step is to find an existing open source project i can incorporate into my own code that extracts the fine grained details i am after, e.g. EVERYTHING there is to know about the hardaware and software on a single machine. Does this project exist? or do i have to develop that first? Have i got to write all this in C? I am guessing getting this information about a computer is going to be easier than for printers, scanners, routers etc... e.g. everything else you would find attached to a network. Once i have access to a single computers details i then need to investigate how i can traverse an entire newtork of printers, scanners, routers, load balancers, switches, firewalls, workstations, servers, storeage devices, laptops, monitors, the list goes on and on One problem i have is i dont have a 1000 machine newtork to play on! Is there any such resource available on theinternet? (is that a silly question?) Anywho, if you dont ask you wont find out! One aspect iam really looking forward to finding out how to travers the entire network, should i be using TCP/IP for this? Whats a good site, blog, usergorup, book for TCP/IP development? How do i go about getting through firewalls? How many questions can i ask in one go? :-) My previous question on this topic ended up with PYTHON being championed as the language/script to go with to develop this application in. Having looked at a few PYTHON examples they all seemed to be related to WINDOWS networks and interrogating Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). I had the feeling you cant rely on whats in WMI, and even if you can that s no good for UNIX netwrks. Surely there exist common code for extracting hardware and software details from a computer? Why cant i find it on the internet? Pease help? Theres no prizes though :-( Thanks in advance I would like to appologise if i have broken forum rules or not tried hard enough on my own before asking for assistance. I just would like to start moving forward with this as its one of the best projects i have been involved with. I am inspired by the many differnt number of challenges involved and that if i manage to produce a useful application at the end of it it would hopefully be extremely helpful to many people.   • Scalability 101: How can I design a scalable web application using PHP?

    I am building a web-application and have a couple of quick questions. From what I learnt, one should not worry about scalability when initially building the app and should only start worrying when the traffic increases. However, this being my first web-application, I am not quite sure if I should take an approach where I design things in an ad-hoc manner and later "fix" them. I have been reading stories about how people start off with an app that gets millions of users in a week or two. Not that I will face the same situation but I can't help but wonder, how do these people do it? Currently, I bought a shared hosting account on Lunarpages and that got me started in building and testing the application. However, I am interested in learning how to build the same application in a scalable-manner using the cloud, for instance, Amazon's EC2. From my understanding, I can see a couple of components: There is a load balancer that first receives requests and then decides where to route each request This request is then handled by a server replica that then processes the request and updates (if required) the database and sends back the response to the client If a similar request comes in, then a caching mechanism like memcached kicks into picture and returns objects from the cache A blackbox that handles database replication Specifically, I am trying to do the following: Setting up a load balancer (my homework revealed that HAProxy is one such load balancer) Setting up replication so that databases can be synchronized Using memcached Configuring Apache to work with multiple web servers Partitioning application to use Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3 (my application is something that will need great deal of storage) Finally, how can I avoid burning myself when using Amazon services? Because this is just a learning phase, I can probably do with 2-3 servers with a simple load balancer and replication but until I want to avoid paying loads of money accidentally. I am able to find resources on individual topics but am unable to find something that starts off from the big picture. Can someone please help me get started?

  • What language/framework (technology) to use for website (flash games portal)

    Hello, I know there are a lot of similar questions on the net, but because I am a newbie in web development I didn't find the solution for my specific problem. I am planing on creating a flash games portal from scratch. It is a big chance that there will be big traffic from the beginning (millions of pageviews). I want to reduce the server costs as much as possible but in the same time to not be tide to an expensive contract as there is a chance that the project will not be as successfully as I want and in that case the money would be very little. The question is : what technology to use? I don't know any web dev technology yet so it doesn't matter what I will learn. My web dev experience is a little php 8 years ago, and from then I programmed in C++ / Java- game and mobile development. I like Java and C syntax and language very much and I tend to dislike dynamic typing or non robust scripting (like php)- but I can get along if these are the best choices. The candidates are now: - Grails (my best for now) Ruby on Rails Cake PHP Other technologies (Google App Engine, Python/Django etc...) I was considering at first using pure C and compiling the web app in the server- just to squeeze more from the servers, but soon I understand that this is overkill. Next my eyes came on Ruby - as there is a lot of buzz for it's easiness of use. Next I discovered Grails and looked at Java because it is said that it is "faster". But I don't know what this "Faster" really means on my needs, so here comes the first question: 1) What will be my biggest consumption on the server, other than bandwidth, for a lot of flash content requests? Is it memory? I heard that Java needs a lot of memory, but is faster. Is it CPU? I am planning to take some daily VPS.NET nodes at first, to see if there is a demand, and if the "spike" is permanent to move to a dedicated server (serverloft.com has some good offers), else to remain with less nodes. I was also considering developing in Google App Engine- cheap or free hosting to use at first - so I can test my assumption- and also very easy to use (no need for sys administration) but the costs became high if used more ( 3 million games played / month .. x mb/ each). And the issue with Google is that it looks me in this technology. My other concern is scalability (not only for traffic/users, but as adding functionality) My plans are to release a functional site in just 4 weeks (just the basics frontend and some quick basic backend - so I can be able to modify some things and add games manually) - but then to raise it and add more things to it. I am planning to take a little different approach than other portals so I need to write it from scratch (a script will not do). 2) Will Grails take much more resources than RoR or Php server wise? I heard that making it on Java stack will be hardware expensive and is overkill if you don't make a bank application. My application will not be very complex (I hope and i will try to) but will have a lot of traffic. I also took in account using CDN for files, but the cheapest CDN found was 5c/GB (vps.net) and the cost per gb on serverloft (http://www.serverloft.com/dedizierte-server/server-details.php?products=4) is only 1.79 cents/GB and comes with the other resources either. I am new to this domain (web). I am learning the ropes and searching on the web for ~half of year but don't have any really practical experience, so I know that I must have some naive thinking and other issues that i don't know from now, so please give me any advice you want regarding anything, not just the specific questions asked. There are a variety of tools available to help you and Support diagnose SOA Suite issues in 11g but it can be confusing as to which tool is appropriate for a particular situation and what their relationships are. This blog post will introduce the various tools and attempt to clarify what each is for and how they are related. Let's first list the tools we'll be addressing: RDA: Remote Diagnostic Agent DFW: Diagnostic Framework Selective Tracing DMS: Dynamic Monitoring Service ODL: Oracle Diagnostic Logging ADR: Automatic Diagnostics Repository ADRCI: Automatic Diagnostics Repository Command Interpreter WLDF: WebLogic Diagnostic Framework This overview is not mean to be a comprehensive guide on using all of these tools, however, extensive reference materials are included that will provide many more details on their execution. Another point to note is that all of these tools are applicable for Fusion Middleware as a whole but specific products may or may not have implemented features to leverage them. A couple of the tools have a WebLogic Scripting Tool or 'WLST' interface. WLST is a command interface for executing pre-built functions and custom scripts against a domain.   • How to sync Ubuntu/software/configurations between N computers with free software and/or without a cloud?

    Note: this question is not about syncing data in a Dropbox-like way (files, folders), it is more about syncing configurations. I would like to have exactly the same version of Ubuntu with all the software installed and configured both on my Desktop PC and on my Laptop PC (and maybe on my small netbook PC) without using Ubuntu Sync and with minimal maintenance effort (setup once, run for a long time). The use case is the following: I work on my Laptop PC and do some changes to software configuration, for example: configure vim to have a new plugin update the Search Tracker / Recoll file search index configure Thunderbird to have an additional IMAP account ('remember password') add some new bookmarks in Firefox/Chrome change the desktop background image install new software with apt-get install build and install new software with checkinstall etc. I do some 'sync' operation I switch to my Desktop PC and get all the changes from (1) working on the Desktop PC I work on my Desktop PC and do some changes to software configuration, for example: add new directory to the list of directories to be backed up by DejaDup add a new check spelling dictionary to the Libreoffice Writer configure the Terminator software to have colored fonts install new font into the Ubuntu system configure Ekiga to make phone calls etc. I do some 'sync' operation I switch to my Laptop PC and get all the changes from (1) and (4) working on the Laptop PC. Question: What free/open-source software can I use to sync both machines' Ubuntu systems, installed software and configurations? Is it possible to do that without any cloud services? Complementary question: It is obvious that the Desktop PC and the Laptop PC have different hardware configurations. How does the 'sync software' in question deal with video drivers, wlan drivers and their configurations? Note: I do not need all the PCs to be synced at the same time, because I work with only one single machine at once. Note: I considered to use Chef to solve the problem, but it seems that it might be really cumbersome to maintain such a setup. Note: I also considered using a bootable USB with Ubuntu installed (portable Linux), but I am not sure that the video drivers will work then.

    The browser on the iPhone is capable of using advanced web technologies introduced in HTML5. One of these is the app cache that allows web pages to run on the client, from the cache, without a connection to the internet. Together with Local Storage you can also save data permanently "in" the page. My question is, would it then be possible to make a website that when visited and set as a web clip (bookmark on the home screen), could be accessed again, at any moment. Using HTML5, Javascript and css, you can make some very good apps and at the same time avoid the pricey developer fee, the harsh app approval and the single platform development platform? Or am I just dreaming?

If I wanted to get into this - but had no job that used the tech, how can I get experience in it to get an experienced job? Jobs state you need "2 years professional experience in MOSS 2007" but then if you have never done it, you won't get the job. The only possible way is you will be doing this at home and not in a team, but if you work in the mean time, that will negate this (it's not like teamworking is tech specific). Many people think if you decide to make a project at home you're just going to play about aimlessly rather than work to specs (where as in my current situation it's vice versa) but if you're dedicated, like me, you would write them - just not with the same presentation. Would employers treat experience at home as professional experience? Biztalk is another prime example of this. Thanks

    I am a student right now. Recently, I am working in a project as a leader with three other students. Due to the lack of experience, our project is progressing slowly and our members are frustrated. They do not feel sense of accomplishment in the project. I am pressured and frustrated, too. But as a team leader, I think I need to push them. But I do not know how to do. Do I help them solve coding problem or just encouragement? But if I pay too much attention on it, it would slow down my own progress. It is a not technical question, but it is very common in software development. I hope veteran programmers would give me some suggestions. Thanks!

  • Which version of Windows 7 for .NET Developers

    Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my laptop from Windows Vista to Windows 7. As a .NET developer I'm not interested in developing Windows 7 components at this stage, but was curious which version would suffice to Install Visual Studio/SQL Server and do some web development testing against the local instance of IIS. I don't care too much about the superfluous features of any Windows 7 editions, I just need to know which one will keep me right for running apps and writing some code. Also, does Windows 7 force the "run as administrator" against VS? Any recommendations?

    I might be missing something here but am unable to understand the true purpose of link shortener services like bit.ly or is it just a lot of hype! Truly if you type nyti.ms on your URL bar on the browser it takes you to www.nytimes.com, but still what is so hard in typing "nytimes.com! which is far much comprehensible to read and understand leave alone to remember! Does shortening URL serve any purpose in web development? Why should someone want use obscure shortened URL?

  • Does whitespace in the title tag affect SEO?

    The site I'm working on uses Umbraco and has xslt macros to generate dynamic page title tags - but the title tags generated contain lots of whitespace and linefeeds. Now these macros can be changed so I'm sure that the contents of the title tag can be condensed, but at this stage of development we'd rather not do any work that is not essential. I've checked W3 and Google but I'm struggling to find something conclusive on whitespace. So I'd like to ask is a title tag formatted like this: <title> Sitename - The official blah blah blah - Section - Section Search Results </title> any worse for SEO than: <title>Sitename - The official blah blah blah - Section - Section Search Results</title> ... and are there any other implications to leaving the title tag with whitespace in it?

  • PreMade Webdesign and Drupal

    I'm terribly new to web development. I'm trying to make a pretty simple site with a friend. My friend has taken the time to design the layout for our site, and we have things looking how we want in a static HTML page. What I'd like to do now is move over to a Content Management System like Drupal but keep the same design that we have all ready laid out. Since I'm completely new to this field, I'm looking for some best-practices advice as to how to make this leap. It's apparent to me that I could probably edit some existing Drupal Theme to make it give me the layout that I want, but is that the path I should go down? Thanks! Update: Also, is it more than just replacing my style.css with their style.css?
