• eepc 100h ubuntu 12.04 external monitor higher resolution modes force a rotated display

  Hi I have a eeepc 1000h netbook. I've just installed ubuntu. I mainly use an external display (samsung ta350 full hd 22 inch affair) but when I select 1080 from the dropdown list, my only options are for a rotated portrait. My neck's non too supple, so tilting my head for extended periods is not really viable. :-) Any ideas on making ubuntu display 1080 normal landscape? It must surely be possible. My gparted boot cd does it perfectly. Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Apparently there was some smoke in one of the towers at PHL, so our flight was an hour delayed. I missed my connection by three minutes . • Can desktop applications be written using javascript?

  Is it currently possible to write desktop applications using javascript, html, css? Possible solutions: Use Adobe AIR runtime and program in js. But no, if I'm using AIR, the AS3 suites it the most. So not a good option. GWT: No because it uses Java and then convert it to js or what ever. Pyjamas: Interesting. But I'm currently focusing on JavaScript. So I don't want to use python and cross-compile to js. Run a local server and use the browser in full screen mode. Sort of okay, but still its the same browser thing. And difficult to distribute. So what is the best option? I'm excited about node.js which is the main reason for looking into JavaScript. Otherwise I would have choose python.

• Queuing rpc calls

  i'm designing a system wich listen to json rpc calls from clients, piles it up inside a list, and if it gets full it should store them in a DB and keep recieving calls. My original plan is to listen to the rpc calls from Perl with the json-rpc and put them in the array. The clients do some long polling in another server to get responses as they appear. What is this blocking/noblocking thing? Should i do a script for node.js to listen to the calls? What do you think is a good practice in this case? The objective is to listen as much calls as possible.

• Shutdown, Restart, Halt issues, not powering off system

  Before any one says search around, I have, to no avail. I can't seem to get it working after trying every fix out there. So basically, when I turn off my laptop it shuts down fine but the last line is "System will now halt" but power never gets cut, I've tried shutdown -P and shutdown -h same result. Then when I try restart it goes through the same process but hangs on "System will now restart" But I can't figure it out, I am running full Ubuntu with no other Operating Systems. Any tips?

• Half the time Linux drop into BusyBox; the rest of the time the boot happens normally

  I just installed Ubuntu x64 onto a USB3 Drive from a DVD, and half the time it appears to skip the grub menu and boots directly into BusyBox. Since the USB3 drive is an SSD, I ran through the full installation (installing on an ext4 partition, along side a 1GB boot partition at the start of the disk), skipping the swap partition. Part of the time that the Grub Menu does shows, it boots into BusyBox with an error: ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/[uid] does not exist. Dropping to a shell! What could cause such an issue?

• Open Source License that prevents re-selling

  I have an open source project that is a add-in to TFS (ie it is for developers and those using TFS.) It is currently using the GPL. But it occurs to me that the GPL does not really represent what I am trying to do with my license. I want my code to be free to everyone who wants to use it. And if you modify it and use it then that is great too. You should not have to open source your modifications. But I would like to block someone from building my code and selling it. Or modifying it and selling it. (Anyone that wants to do that should have to negotiate a separate license with me.) Is there an open source license that prevents re-selling, but allows full non-vending use for a person/company that downloads it?

• How can I get a 1920x1080 resolution?

  I a newbie Linux and have just installed Ubuntu in a dual boot with Windows 7. I love the interface of Ubuntu but unfortunately I can only get a 800x600 or 1024x728 resolution with black bars all around the screen. I have an nVidia GTX 570 graphics card and an Asus 1080p 23" monitor. What may be of note is that I had to use the nomodeset command on installation of the boot would get stuck at a line with "nouveau", which I understand is to do with the drivers. Additionally, when I type in xrandr to the terminal, it comes up with the error message "failed to get size of gamma for output default". I guess what I am looking for here is someone who could explain to me really simply the steps I have to take to get a full 1080p resolution, at which point I am sure i will become a great fan of the OS! • Low CPU/Memory/Memory-bandwith Pathfinding (maybe like in Warcraft 1)

  Dijkstra and A* are all nice and popular but what kind of algorithm was used in Warcraft 1 for pathfinding? I remember that the enemy could get trapped in bowl-like caverns which means there were (most probably) no full-path calculations from "start to end". If I recall correctly, the algorithm could be something like this: A) Move towards enemy until success or hitting a wall B) If blocked by a wall, follow the wall until you can move towards the enemy without being blocked and then do A) But I'd like to know, if someone knows :-) [edit] As explained to Byte56, I'm searching for a low cpu/mem/mem-bandwidth algo and wanted to know if Warcraft had some special secrets to deliver (never seen that kind of pathfinding elsewhere), I hope that that is more concordant with the stackexchange rules.

• New Job Over Budget

  I recently started a new job as a contract developer, and my non-developer boss of about two weeks ago gave me the task to re-create an app from another language and developer that he will reuse with multiple clients (replacing the front-end), that I estimated would take longer than his estimate of 12 hours. Two weeks later, I'm 230% over-budget. I admit this was my 2nd web app, I had been a wordpress developer in the past, so I am somewhat new to code igniter, but not shabby php by any means. My boss hired me knowing this and I was clear that it would take longer than his 12 hours. He's seen me in the office on task for 2 weeks, he should be somewhat prepared for this bill. Do I expect the full amount of hours, or do I filter against how much of learned? Can I bill for research as a developer?

• Does it makes sense to backup the whole partition as opposed to their files?

  I know that on Windows it's quite futile to try to backup the "C:" partition file-wise and that's why a full partition backup is needed. Is it OK to backup a the root Linux partition file-wise? Are there any downsides? Clarification Here, I don't care about advantages of partial backups. I'm going to do additional separate backups of /home, etc. What I'm interested in here is the comparison of backup of all files from / vs. backup of the whole partition as device What are the advantages of something like dd if=/dev/sda1 ...?

• root and home are on seperate partitions, but home still uses up space on root?

  When installing Ubuntu 12.10 for the first time, I made sure /home had it's own partition, gave it about 185GB, and gave root ~10GB. Now root is almost full after a few days and I've noticed that root is as big as /home and some additional MB from some actual root files. Note that I deleted some unused files in /home to make sure it really affects how much space is used in root, and it clearly does. (checked in gparted) I've also made sure the files I am talking about are actually in /home/myname/ and not just in root's home. df -h spits out this information: df: `/root/.gvfs': Permission denied Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb2 9.2G 7.9G 908M 90% / udev 3.9G 12K 3.9G 1% /dev tmpfs 1.6G 932K 1.6G 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 3.9G 6.4M 3.9G 1% /run/shm none 100M 112K 100M 1% /run/user /dev/sdb3 184G 4.9G 170G 3% /home /dev/sdb4 729G 87G 642G 12% /media/mave/Storage I cut out my windows partitions as I don't see any relevance. • Need to produce an animated texture of Water where each image tiles in all directions

  I need to produce a 2D 'animated' texture of "water" for a game in which each image tiles in 'all' directions, much like those produced by the Caustics Generator, but with the power and flexibility of something the likes of Blender. The final result from Caustics Generator is 32 images that are actually animated such that when the full 32 images are played in a loop they will seamlessly loop forever. They will not only loop in time, but each image also tile in all directions. This is nice, but it comes in only one flavor so to speak. I'd like to accomplish the same thing with a Blender type tool, and I have actually gotten to the point where I generate the X number of images, but they do not tile in 'all' directions, nor are they slightly animated. I've tried Blender texture animations using offsets but with only limited success. Does anyone know of how to (or of a tool) which will animate textures such that they tile in all (4) directions?
