  • What is the most cross-browser/system compatible option for 3d graphics on a web page?

    - by LachlanB
I would like to develop a bit of functionality for a web site that involves a bit of 3D - the user can move around objects, rotate them and texture them. So far I've looked into: WebGL (in particular three.js) and it looks great, but it's not supported in IE nor IOS. IOS supports the <canvas> tag, but only 2d. It looks like three.js has an unsupported hack to make a 3d thing use the 2d canvas instead without textures, but this looks like a hack. I also considered resorting to Flash which works on most browsers, but that won't work on IOS. What's my best option for doing 3d web graphics on the vast array of browsers and interfaces? At the moment I'm thinking WebGL for web (and ask people to use chrome or firefox, and take the hit on IE) and then maybe write a native app for IOS, but I am not sure if there are better alternatives available that I don't know of.

  • Where, in an object oriented system should you, if at all, choose (C-style) structs over classes?

    - by Anto
C and most likely many other languages provide a struct keyword for creating structures (or something in a similar fashion). These are (at least in C), from a simplified point of view like classes, but without polymorphism, inheritance, methods, and so on. Think of an object-oriented (or multi paradigm) language with C-style structs. Where would you choose them over classes? Now, I don't believe they are to be used with OOP as classes seem to replace their purposes, but I wonder if there are situations where they could be preferred over classes in otherwise object-oriented programs and in what kind of situations. Are there such situations?

  • C# .NET Why does my inherited listview keep drawing in LargeIcon View ?? Because Microsoft is Evil!!

    - by Bugz R us
    I have a inherited Listview which standard has to be in Tile Mode. When using this control, the DrawItem gives e.bounds which are clearly bounds of largeIcon view ?? When debugging to check the view it is actually set to, it says it's in Tile view ?? Yet e.DrawText draws LargeIcon view ?? ......... Edit: ................. This seems only to happen when the control is placed upon another usercontrol? ......... Edit 2: ................. It gets stranger ... When i add buttons next to the list to change the view at runtime, "Tile" is the same as "LargeIcon", and "List" view is the same as "SmallIcons" ??? I've also completely removed the ownerdraw ... .......... Edit 3: ................. MSDN Documentation: Tile view Each item appears as a full-sized icon with the item label and subitem information to the right of it. The subitem information that appears is specified by the application. This view is available only on Windows XP and the Windows Server 2003 family. On earlier operating systems, this value is ignored and the ListView control displays in the LargeIcon view. Well I am on XP ya damn liars ?!? Apparently if the control is within a usercontrol, this value is ignored too ... pff I'm getting enough of this Microsoft crap .... you just keep on hitting bugs ... another day down the drain ... public class InheritedListView : ListView { //Hiding members ... mwuahahahahaha //yeah i was still laughing then [BrowsableAttribute(false)] public new View View { get { return base.View; } } public InheritedListView() { base.View = View.Tile; this.OwnerDraw = true; base.DrawItem += new DrawListViewItemEventHandler(DualLineGrid_DrawItem); } void DualLineGrid_DrawItem(object sender, DrawListViewItemEventArgs e) { View v = this.View; //**when debugging, v is Tile, however e.DrawText() draws in LargeIcon mode, // e.Bounds also reflects LargeIcon mode ???? ** }

  • Is there a version control system that can show changes to a specific method or function?

    - by chesles
Sometimes it would be nice to be able to say something like: (git|svn|hg|etc) diff Foo.c:main (git|svn|hg|etc) log log Foo.c:main to see the changes made to a specific function within a source file since the last commit, or the complete history of changes. My question is two-fold: Does something exist that does this? Would such a tool be practical? It would have to do some simple parsing of the code at each revision in order to compare different versions of the function; would the overhead be too much for it to be efficient?

  • How do I force the system to look for new sound devices?

    - by John Zeringue
I have a small flat screen TV (Toshiba) that I often connect via HDMI to my laptop (an HP Pavilion dv4) and use as a computer monitor. When I do this, I prefer to use the TV's speakers, particularly when I'm watching video, because the sound quality is much better. However, when I connect the HDMI cable after turning on my computer (rather than having it plugged in before booting up), Sound Settings does not list the TV as an output device, and I am forced to reboot. I was curious if there is an easier solution to this, perhaps a CLI command to check for new sound outputs. Does anyone know of something like this or have another solution? To clarify, I believe this is a software problem. The HDMI always works, and I can switch my desktop over to the TV at any time. The issue is that, if the HDMI wasn't connected during start up, the TV will not appear as an output option in the Sound Settings GUI. So, unless I'm mistaken, my question is not HDMI specific, but rather a general usage question about manipulating sound settings from the command line.

  • SOLVED: The type or namespace name 'Linq' does not exist in the namespace 'System' - are you missing

This problem has been cropping up a lot recently - projects will complain of missing namespace's when I open them up and attempt to compile the first time. If this has happened to you then read on for a simple fix. Scenario I don't know if this one is a bug in Visual Studio 2010 (Beta 2 and RC1) or something else but recently I have noticed this error cropping up more and more. When I open an existing project it might fail to compile. I have also noticed it happen when I have downloaded a fresh...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How do I remove the Skype icon from the system panel?

    - by superjudge3
I have been trying for some time to remove the Skype icon in the upper panel in Ubuntu 11.10, but to no avail. I have went into dconf, went to desktop - unity - panel, and I looked to delete 'Skype' from the whitelist. But Skype isn't in the whitelist! And it's showing up on the panel! Something smells fishy here, and I was wondering if anyone had an answer as to a) how I can actually remove the Skype icon from the gnome panel and b) why an icon still show up there if it isn't in the whitelist? Also, if it's relevant, I use Unity. EDIT: So, the only solution for this issue is the scorched earth strategy of removing sni-qt?

  • Silverlight: Binding to a LayoutRoot value from within a DataTemplate

    - by Rosarch
I have a DataTemplate for a ListBox, where I have several controls that bind to an item. I would also like to bind to a value on LayoutRoot.DataContext. I'm unsure of how to do this. <!--LayoutRoot is the root grid where all page content is placed--> <StackPanel x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="Transparent"> <ListBox ItemsSource="{Binding Items}"> <ListBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <StackPanel> <TextBlock Text="{Binding}" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding ElementName=LayoutRoot, Path=DataContext.Foo}" /> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> </ListBox.ItemTemplate> </ListBox> </StackPanel> public partial class MainPage : PhoneApplicationPage { public string Foo { get { return "the moon"; } } private int startIndex = 1; private IList<string> _data = new List<string>() { "foo", "bar", "baz" }; public IList<string> Items { get { return _data; } } // Constructor public MainPage() { InitializeComponent(); LayoutRoot.DataContext = this; } } This doesn't work; only the _data items are displayed. The following binding errors appear in the Debug output: System.Windows.Data Error: BindingExpression path error: 'Foo' property not found on 'foo' 'System.String' (HashCode=1502598398). BindingExpression: Path='DataContext.Foo' DataItem='System.Windows.Controls.Border' (HashCode=78299055); target element is 'System.Windows.Controls.TextBlock' (Name=''); target property is 'Text' (type 'System.String').. • Need to include Calendar and Email in own CRM system. Whose?

    - by PurplePilot
I am writing a web based application that needs to have some elements of CRM in it but I cannot use an of-the-shelf CRM to do what I want. (Honestly we have been through it all and it will not work). Now while Tasks, Calls, Meetings and Notes are straightforward the idea of reinventing Mail and Calendars seems a waste of time and effort and also unproductive as most users already have their own and it simply adds to the complexity of my application and hacks users off. My thoughts are going around using Outlook and or GMail/iCal and or Mac Mail/iCal and or Thunderbird and importing the relevant data or if possible integrating it into the application. Any thoughts? Anyone got any experience of this can point me in a few directions. N.B. Not looking for an answer as too complex just some pointers and thoughts. Thanks. p.s. We did look at Sugar CRM as the basis for our project and it is useful to get best practice from but as I say it was not useable due to how we are structuring our software, not Sugar's fault.

  • How to run a command on a remote Windows system as a non-admin user with WMI?

    - by John
I have a script written in Visual Basic that starts a process (given to the script as an argument) on a remote system (again, given as an argument) using WMI. This script works fine when using an Administrator account on the remote system, but when using a non-administrator account, I get the following error: ConnectServer Failed w/ (-2147024891) Access is denied. I'd like to be able to run processes on remote systems as a non-administrator user with this script, and I'm pretty sure the problem is due to security settings on the remote system, but I've not been able to reset the right ones.

  • What can cause Java to keep running after System.exit()?

    - by uckelman
I have a Java program which is being started via ProcessBuilder from another Java program. System.exit(0) is called from the child program, but for some of our users (on Windows) the java.exe process associated with the child doesn't terminate. The child program has no shutdown hooks, nor does it have a SecurityManager which might stop System.exit() from terminating the VM. I can't reproduce the problem myself on Linux or Windows Vista. So far, the only reports of the problem come from two Windows XP users and one Vista user, using two different JREs (1.6.0_15 and 1.6.0_18), but they're able to reproduce the problem every time. Can anyone suggest reasons why the JVM would fail to terminate after System.exit(), and then only on some machines?

  • Stopwatch vs. using System.DateTime.Now for timing events

    - by Randy Minder
I wanted to track the performance of a piece of my application so I initially stored the start time using System.DateTime.Now and the end time also using System.DateTime.Now. The difference between the two was how long my code took to execute. I noticed though that the difference didn't appear to be accurate. So I tried using a Stopwatch object. This turned out to be much, much more accurate. Can anyone tell me why Stopwatch would be more accurate than calculating the difference between a start and end time using System.DateTime.Now? Thanks.

  • Natural Search Engine Optimization - Don't "Game the System" Or You Will Get Banned!

When focusing on natural search engine optimization, it is important that you keep the process "white hat." You see, when it comes to SEO, there are basically three schools of thought: White hat, Gray hat, and Black hat. As you can probably infer, white hat is following the rules, gray hat is a little in between, and black hat is going against parameters that Google and other major search engines have set for ethical SEO practices.

  • Creating a System.Windows.Controls.Image throws an exception - how do I use the dispatcher to instan

    - by Scott Whitlock
I'm running my unit tests on a piece of code that does the following in the test: Assert.IsNotNull(target.Icon); Inside the getter for the Icon property, I'm doing this: System.Windows.Controls.Image img = new System.Windows.Controls.Image(); That's throwing this exception: System.InvalidOperationException : The calling thread must be STA, because many UI components require this. I understand what that means, and I understand that I need to use the Dispatcher, but I'm a bit confused about how or why... this is a property of my ViewModel and I don't get any of these exceptions when running the application. Other info: this only started failing when I upgraded to .NET 4.

  • Is MSDN referencing a system.thread, a worker thread, an io thread or all three?

    - by w0051977
Please see the warning below taken from the StreamWriter class specification (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.io.streamwriter.aspx): "Any public static (Shared in Visual Basic) members of this type are thread safe. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe." I understand that a W3WC process contains two thread pools i.e. worker threads and I/O threads. A worker thread could contain many threads of its own (if the application creates its own System.Thread instances). Does the warning only relate to System.Threads or does it relate to worker threads and I/O threads as well I.e. as the instance variables of the streamwriter class are not thread safe then does this mean that there would be problems if multiple worker threads access it eg if two users on two different web clients attempt to write to the log file at the same time, then could one lock out the other?

  • What can I learn to build a (kind of) recommendation system?

    - by lsmagalhaes
I'm learning how to develop an android app (nothing serious, just for learning and fun), so I devised the following goal: an app that learns with users actions and, some time later, starts to suggest some useful things. For example: The user add some notes daily, in the morning, and mark some of them as done generally on thursdays and sundays, at evening. Based on that behaviour and the relation of the notes marked as done, the app will prioritize notes that are more propense to be marked, and avoid notifying in days where no note is marked. This is a silly example but I think it ilustrates well what I want to do. I know this is a matter of machine learning, but I don't know where I should start learning. To anyone interested, I'm build a backend in Python, so any libraries or frameworks in this language are very welcome. The frontend, by the way, is sencha touch + phonegap.

  • Drawing problem does ShowWindow(hWnd, SW_HIDE) automatically invalidate rectangles?

    - by wk1989
Hello, I'm running into a problem where, I have a Window that contains a child window. The child window contains another child window where a video is playing using Windows Media Player. Whenever I do call ShowWindow (hWnd, SW_HIDE) on the parent Window and paint over the entire surface, the region occupied by the grand-child window (where the video was playing) is not overridden. I used spy++ and found that that region which was not overridden was set to hidden BEFORE the repaint occurs. I monitored the hwnd of the grand-child window and it did not seem to receive any WM_EraseBKGND or WM_NCPAINT messages. Does this mean the area it occupied had not been invalidated and therefore could not be drawn over? I'm new to winforms. Thanks!

  • Why does var evaluate to System.Object in "foreach (var row in table.Rows)"?

    - by DanM
When I enter this foreach statement... foreach (var row in table.Rows) ...the tooltip for var says class System.Object I'm confused why it's not class System.Data.DataRow. (In case you're wondering, yes, I have using System.Data at the top of my code file.) If I declare the type explicitly, as in... foreach (DataRow row in table.Rows) ...it works fine with no errors. Also if I do... var numbers = new int[] { 1, 2, 3 }; foreach (var number in numbers) ...var evaluates to struct System.Int32. So, the problem is not that var doesn't work in a foreach clause. So, there's something strange about DataRowCollection where the items don't automatically evaluate to DataRow. But I can't figure out what it is. Does anyone have an explanation?
