Hi,
I have Ubuntu host that has a VMWare running Windows XP.
If I connect to a VPN from my Windows XP, then will that connection be available to my host Ubuntu as well?

Getting the following error when attempting to install:
Error attempting to create the destination file:
C:\Windows Embedded
Data\Repositories\{25C88912-9870-4686-97CE-8244C
A1B0DAB}.CAB. System error code: 5
Code 5 looks to be an "Access denied" issue. Not sure if this is a generic Windows error, or specific to this install.
Any insight is appreciated!

How do I host a Windows Terminal (to run Windows applications and be accessed by users via a standard MS Remote Desktop client) on a Linux server? I've heard there are some alternatives to Microsoft server software for this purpose.
I have some unallocated space before my Windows 7 partition.
Can I move the Windows 7 partition so that the free space is after it instead than before it, and then extend the partition to use all of the currently unallocated space?
I'd like to update Safari to 4.0.5 for security reasons, but I can't figure out how to run the Apple updater manually. On Mac there's usually a "Check for Updates" menu item, but I don't see one on the Windows version. I tried downloading the latest version from http://www.apple.com/safari/download/, but Windows won't let me open the file, saying it is a security risk.
I hid one of the accounts on my computer from the welcome screen by adding it to the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList
I was hoping I'd be able to log in to this account by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del on the welcome screen, but Windows 7 completely ignores this. Is there a way to login to the hidden account on a Windows 7 machine?
on my phone device which runs with windows mobile, I'll like to have an application which says the name of the caller, when i get a new call. I know that nokia has such an application. Do you know such an application for windows mobile?
Hi,
Since switching to Windows 7 for my desktop I've started to get really p***ed off at the length of time it takes to start the event viewer to display the application event log (typically 20-30 secs or disk griding - presumably to load and cache all the events)
I've just noticed that on server 2008 R2 it seems instantaneous.
Is my experience typical? Is there any setting I can tweak to make it fast on Windows 7 as well?

I'm trying to configure my Windows 2008 servers so that my developers can view their status without needing to log on to the box or be an admin. Unfortunately, the permissions set in Windows 2008 for remote non-admin users don't include the ability to enumerate or otherwise query services. This causes anything that contacts the SCM on the far end to fail (Win32_Service, sc.exe, services.msc etc).
How do I set up permissions so that they can at least list the services and see if they are running?
I work with Windows 8.1 and today I installed Ubuntu 14.04 alongside it, but now I can't set the boot menu to display both OS.
When I boot the system it normally loads Windows 8.1 without opening the boot menu.
I created a boot USB with Yumi. When booting with Yumi and selecting "boot from hard disk", Ubuntu turned on.
My drives:
My laptop is a Fujitsu Lifebook AH532/G52 and the BIOS is a Phoenix v1.10
When I log in on a Windows 8 machine for the first time with my Microsoft Account (by providing an e-mail address), a new user folder is created:
C:\Users\dzinx_000
In previous versions of Windows, I could choose the name of this folder (it was equal to my username). As I use the commandline often, it is quite annoying to me.
Can I somehow rename it to dzinx?
Does simply renaming the folder break everything?
I'm trying to use an old parallel-port based printer with a USB-to-parallel port adapter on Windows 7. When I plug it into the USB port on the computer it's listed as an unrecognized device. I know that these cables typically use the "USB Printing Support" driver with makes USB ports show up as printer ports in the printer dialog. Is there a way to manually add USB Printing Support to Windows 7, since it isn't being added automatically?
I previously had Heron 8.04 installed. Today I decided to upgrade.
During the partition phase of the install of 10.10 it asked me what portion of the drive I should use. There were a few options:
Drag the partition size to indicate what I wanted to use
A button that said use entire partition
A button that said use entire drive
I selected use entire partition as the Windows partition did not appear on the screen I assumed this was just displaying the existing Ubuntu partition.
After install I think I have wiped my entire Windows partition, I can't see it anywhere.
I would appreciate some advice as to find if it really is gone forever (My stupidity I didn't back up my Windows partition which includes 3 years of baby photos).
I can't stand the Windows command "shell" and console window. I can't copy text off a command prompt window, the .bat syntax is retarded, I can't stand how the command buffer works, it doesn't support ANSI color codes, I could go on and on.
Are there any alternatives to the Windows command prompt?
I have an English version of Windows 7, but my keyboard is Japanese.
However, even though I choose a Japanese keyboard (Microsoft IME) under Keyboard and Languages, the layout isn't right. I think it's English layout, but I can't be sure.
Anyway, I want the layout and usage to be exactly like it is on a Japanese Windows 7, as there are some nice (mouse free) shortcuts to change between input modes. Any suggestions?
Is there a way to create a wildcard domain in the windows hosts file.
I tried this
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx *.somedomain.com
This does not work, is there maybe some other syntax I should use?

I'm testing windows 8 RP. Installed tens of apps from market. What I wanna know is, is there any way to save (or maybe sync with windows live account) installed app list, and install these saved applications in future - RTM version of OS?
I mean, somehing like on Apples' devices - icloud features function that I'm talking about. You can install apps on iPhone and sync with iCloud account. Then you can re-install these apps on another device, which signed in with your login into icloud.
I recently just installed Ubuntu 13 from a USB drive.
I have/had Windows 8 64 bit on my desktop computer.
When I restart and boot my computer, there is not an option that allows me to choose Ubuntu, it goes straight to Windows 8. I understand this is a common issue.
However, my main question is, how do I get to even GO INTO Ubuntu after it's installed?
I don't mind booting into Windows 8 at first, but how can I even choose to see Ubuntu now that it's installed?
Hello,
My cousin just deleted his Linux partition and another smaller partitio nand now Windows is not booting, no he does not have the recovery disc. When Windows tries to boot it goes to "GRUB" and says "partition not loaded". What are some GRUB commands? And is it possible to fix this without using the recovery CD? Thank you in advance.

I work with four monitors and software that displays a great many windows. Every now and then things go wrong and I'll end up with a window that is partially or completely "off the screen". Is there a trick or utility that will help me rescue the windows and bring them back in to view.
Hello,
When I set up my XBox 360 as a Windows Media Extender although I can see all the media I have on my Windows Vista PC it is excruciatingly slow to move between albums etc
Is there anything I can do to improve this or is it just because of the number of media files I have - about 5GB?
Cheers
I have a Dell XPS 420. I've installed Windows 7 RTM (x64)
I have this audio device: SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio
I have tried using the windows 7 basic driver, and also the Vista 64-bit driver from Dell's website (details):
Date: 10/29/2007
Version: 6.10.0.5511, A04
File Size: 7 MB
With both drivers, I get normal stereo sound from the driver, but my 5.1 surround sound doesn't work. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a fix?
Hi,
Is there a way to disable time and date editing on a Windows Mobile device (via APIs or the registry)?
I have an application using the time and date of a Windows Mobile PDA and I don't want the user to change it (the time and date) - unless - he/she has some kind of administrative rights. I haven't find a way to do it with the menus. Is it possible to do it in any other way?
Thanks
I don't seem to be able to share between my Ubuntu (fresh install) and any of my Windows machines. I tried using this guide: How to Share Folders in Ubuntu & Access them from Windows 7. The problems is that I cannot see the Ubuntu machine in my network pane on the Windows machine.
Any Ideas of what I should check?
Ultimately what I am looking to do is make mobile media server that I can put in the Van, attach a WiFi router, and stream to an iPad, tablet, laptop, etc. Any advice on setting this up would be appreciated.
