• Getting MSDeploy working on our build/integration server - Is an MSBuild upgrade necessary?

  We have what I think is a fairly standard build process: 1. Developer: Check in code 2. Build: Polls repo, sees change, and kicks off build that: 3. Build: Updates from repo, Builds w/ MSBuild, Runs unit tests w/ nunit, 4. Build: creates installer package Our security team allows us to pull from the build server, but does not allow the build server to push. So we generally rdp in, d/l the installers, and run them, which rules out the slick deployment services, so I would need to generate packages instead. I'd like to use MSDeploy, except that we have the following issues: We're on .net 3.5, and the MSBuild target (Package) that uses MSDeploy requires 4.0. Is there anything I'd need to install other than .net 4.0 RC for this? (Would MSBuild be part of that upgrade?) When I generate packages with MSDeploy, I see that I don't have just 1 file. There's a zip, deploy.cmd, SourceManifest.xml, and SetParameters.xml. What are all the other files for, and why wouldn't they all be in the 'package'? It sounds as if you can create packages by telling the system to look at a working IIS site. But if the packages are build from a CI environment, aren't you basically out of luck here? It feels like they designed some of this for small-scale developers deploying from their dev environment. That's a fine use case, but I'm interested in see what everyone's enterprise-experience is with the tool Any suggestions?

• WiX major upgrade refuses to replace existing file!

  Hello! I have inherited this project with a WiX installer, and am required to make this version usefully upgrade the previous one! My problem comes in replacing the database files with new versions. No, the problem is not that they are locked, I can replace them manually, and in fact now ONE of them is replaced, while the other is not. Please, please tell me what I'm doing wrong here. I've tried several other solutions (including registry keys as KeyPath instead of CompanionFile) but nothing is quite working. The file that is giving me trouble is the one called "PathwaysMdf". Even though it's Component code is EXACTLY the same as the PathwaysLdf file, that file is replaced, while the MDF is NOT. • SQLite NHibernate configuration with .Net 4.0 and vs 2010

  I am having way too much trouble getting my environment straight after switching to 2010 and .net 4.0, so I'd like to break the whole process down once and for all. 1) Which SQLite dll?? I think it is SQLite-1.0.65.1-vs2010rc-net4-setup.zip. Yes? 2) I ran the installer so the dll is in the GAC but I usually find there are less problems if I can just reference the dll stand alone. Is there any reason it needs to be in the GAC, and if not, what's the best way to uninstall it from the GAC (I can get to the GAC folder but it says I need permission to delete the files; should I leave the SQLite Designer dll's there?)? 3) x64. There is an x64 dll in the download. I had problems with SQLite in the past though that I could only resolve by compiling to x86. Can I safely reference the x64 dll and compile to Any CPU now? 4) what is the right NHib config? I have been using the one below, but since the error I get says "Could not create the driver from NHibernate.Driver.SQLite20Driver." that configuration is guilty until proven innocent too? 5) could FNH be a problem too? I don't use the pre-configured fluent SQLite method but FNH has to provide a reference to it for that to work, no? • Using Entity Framework with an SQL Compact Private Installation

  I am using Entity Framework 4 in a desktop application with SQL Compact. I want to use a private installation of SQL Compact with my application, so that my installer can install SQL Compact without giving the user a second installation to do. It also avoids versioning hassles down the road. My development machine has SQL Compact 3.5 SP1 installed as a public installation, so my app runs fine there, as one would expect. But it's not running on my test machine, which does not have SQL Compact installed. I get this error: The specified store provider cannot be found in the configuration, or is not valid. I know some people have had difficulty with SQL Compact private installations, but I have used them for a while, and I really like them. Unfortunately, my regular private installation approach isn't working. I have checked the version numbers on my SQL CE files, and they are all 3.8.8078.0, which is the SP2 RC version. Here are the files I have included in my private installation: sqlcecompact35.dll sqlceer35EN.dll sqlceme35.dll sqlceqp35.dll sqlcese35.dll System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll System.Data.SqlServerCe.Entity.dll I have added a reference to System.Data.SqlServerCe to my project, and I have verified that all of the files listed above are being copied to the application folder on the installation machine. • Why does Tfs2010 build my Wix project before anything else?

  Hi all, A similar question was asked and answered about a year ago, but was either a different issue (everything was in beta) or misdiagnosed. It's located here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/688162/msbuild-task-fails-because-any-cpu-solution-is-built-out-of-order. My issue is that I have a wix installer project, and after upgrading to Tfs2010 on monday, the build fails on linking because it can't find the build product of the Wpf application in the project. After some digging, it's because it hasn't been built yet. Building in Vs2010 works as normal. The wix project is set to depend on the Wpf project, and when viewing Project Build Order in the IDE, everything looks as normal. The problem was originally encountered with only two platform definitions in the solution; x86 and x64. There are also two flavors, Debug and Release, and TFSBuild.proj is set to build all four combinations. There was no occurence of AnyCPU anywhere. Per the referenced question above, I tried changing the Wpf project to use AnyCPU so that it would be built first. At this point, the wix project used the exact configuration and the Wpf project used the flavor with AnyCPU. However, doing so didn't seem to change anything. I'm using the Tfs2010 RTM, Vs2010 RTM, and the most recent version of Wix, which at the time of this writing is 3.5.1602.0, from 2010-04-02. Anyone else running into this?

• How to set "Run this program as an administrator" programatically.

  I'm having a problem with good ol' bdeadmin.exe in Vista. First, let's get the predictable responses out of the way: "You should not require your application to be elevated." This one does. C'est la vie. "You need to embed a manifest file." It is already compiled, it is many years old, the company that created it has no intention of doing it again, and it is installed from a Merge Module (MSM file). "BDE is obsolete, you should be using dbExpress" One and a half million lines of code. 'Nuff said. "Drop a manifest file next to the EXE." Tried that, did nothing. As a test, that same manifest file was able to make several other EXE files require elevation, just not the one I wanted. Something in there is preventing the external manifest from being read. "Create a shortcut and set SLDF_RUNAS_USER." Can't do that, it's a Control Panel applet. The only thing that worked was setting "Run this program as an administrator" under the Compatibility tab of its Properties window. I shouldn't have to tell users to do this. Bad for business. I need to have the installer do this. The MSM file uses a static path. Any ideas?

  I tried to install the following gem: http://github.com/maxjustus/sinatra-authentication on Windows 7 running Ruby 1.9 from the One-Click Installer. C:\Users\Joel>gem install sinatra-authentication Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing sinatra-authentication: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. C:/Ruby19/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb creating Makefile make 'make' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Gem files will remain installed in C:/Ruby19/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/yajl-ruby- 0.7.5 for inspection. Results logged to C:/Ruby19/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/yajl-ruby-0.7.5/ext/gem_mak e.out I looked everywehere online, tried to install earlier versions, and attempted a manual install without success (it gave me a stack too deep error). I suspect there are problems with the yajl-ruby gem (http://github.com/brianmario/yajl-ruby), a dependency? (I think) The logs in gem_make.out show: C:/Ruby19/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb creating Makefile make 'make' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Do you have any idea as to how to solve this? Thanks!

• What is your best-practice advice on implementing SQL stored procedures (in a C# winforms applicatio

  I have read these very good questions on SO about SQL stored procedures: When should you use stored procedures? and Are Stored Procedures more efficient, in general, than inline statements on modern RDBMS’s? I am a beginner on integrating .NET/SQL though I have used basic SQL functionality for more than a decade in other environments. It's time to advance with regards to organization and deployment. I am using .NET C# 3.5, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008; though this question can be regarded as language- and database- agnostic, meaning that it could easily apply to other environments that use stored procedures and a relational database. Given that I have an application with inline SQL queries, and I am interested in converting to stored procedures for organizational and performance purposes, what are your recommendations for doing so? Here are some additional questions in my mind related to this subject that may help shape the answers: Should I create the stored procedures in SQL using SQL Management Studio and simply re-create the database when it is installed for a client? Am I better off creating all of the stored procedures in my application, inside of a database initialization method? It seems logical to assume that creating stored procedures must follow the creation of tables in a new installation. My database initialization method creates new tables and inserts some default data. My plan is to create stored procedures following that step, but I am beginning to think there might be a better way to set up a database from scratch (such as in the installer of the program). Thoughts on this are appreciated. I have a variety of queries throughout the application. Some queries are incredibly simple (SELECT id FROM table) and others are extremely long and complex, performing several joins and accepting approximately 80 parameters. Should I replace all queries with stored procedures, or only those that might benefit from doing so? Finally, as this topic obviously requires some research and education, can you recommend an article, book, or tutorial that covers the nuances of using stored procedures instead of direct statements?

  Hi all, I have a service MyService.exe that is babysitting my application MyApp.exe, meaning it starts the application when this one crashes or whatever. Basically when the service is stopped the application is stopped (by the service) and when the service is started the application is started by the service. In order to stop my service and by that my application when uninstalling I'm doing: <ServiceControl Id='MyServiceControl' Name='MyServiceForTest' Start='install' Stop='uninstall' Remove='uninstall'/> But when I want to uninstall everything I get the error message: "The setup must update files or services that cannot be updated while the system is running. If you choose to continue, a reboot will be required to complete the setup.". If I manually stop the service before running the uninstaller I don't get this msg as both my service and my application aren't then running anymore. In the log file I noticed that this happens in InstallValidate and I get this message b/c of MyApp.exe being running. I think what happens is: the uninstallers checks the running applications, it notices that the MyService.exe and MyApp.exe are both running, detects probably that the MyService.exe will be stopped by the uninstaller itself as instructed, but doesn't know about the MyApp.exe that this one will also be terminated once the service will be stopped so it will show the reboot-message. I can't just close MyApp.exe from uninstaller b/c the service will restart it again. How could I solve this problem so that the user won't need to reboot or to manually stop the service before doing an uninstall/upgrade? Also, I can't change MyService and MyApp code anymore so I will have to do this from the (un)installer only. TIA, Viv

  I'm having a lot of trouble trying to track down the cause of this error message. I have a large Visual Studio 2010 solution which compiles without error on my local machine but on the build server, msbuild fails on one of the projects with the error: fatal error CS0002: Unable to load message string from resources Here's the red error section at the end: Build FAILED. UPDATE I have just run msbuild /version on both machines and it turns out the .net framework versions are very slightly different. Local machine is 4.0.30319.488 and build server is 4.0.30319.1. I'm about to run windows update on the server to allow it to install some updates, as several seem to be .net framework-related, so I'll see if that makes a difference. UPDATE Installing the updates didn't help. Just remembered I copied up csc.exe from the async preview a little while ago in order to facilitate async compilation (the actual async preview had failed to install on the server due to visual studio not being there, but installing visual studio team viewer seems to have fixed that, so i've just run the proper async ctp3 installer to see if that makes a difference.

  I just installed the rails env using the Rails installer on my Mac OSX 10.7.4. I create a project using the "rails new" command. • InstallUtil Publishing WMI Schema to 64 Bit Directory Instead of 32 Bit Directory

  This is similar to this question, but it doesn't look like a good solution was ever determined, so I'm opening a new one with clarified details. We wrote a .NET service, which among other things, publishes some of the class hierarchy using WMI. On a 64-Bit machine, we are running the 32-bit version of InstallUtil to install the service. It installs successfully, but when the service runs, we receive the following error message when publishing a WMI class using Instrumentation.Publish() DirectoryNotFoundException - (Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Windows\system32\WBEM\Framework\root\MyNamespace\MyService'.) However, this directory does exist in the C:\Windows\syswow64 directory. If we manually copy that directory structure to the system32 directory, then everything works. However, we are looking for automated solution, because we have this packaged up in an MSI which we distribute onto many servers. We have tried running the 64-Bit version of InstallUtil, to see if that would work, however... and this is the really weird part... it gives us an error on install that says Installing WMI Schema: Started An exception occurred during the Install phase. System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException: Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Windows\system32\WBEM\Framework\root\MyNamespace\MyService.mof'. It looks as if somehow, the WMI installer flipped around. Has anyone else experienced this, or know of a work around?

  Hi experts, I am developing an desktop based application using VB.NET, similar to add/remove program. everything was working fine until i start working on uninstall feature. Now what am i doing is that i get the uninstall string of the specific application from the registry and use System.Diagnostics.Process to run UninstallString. Dim proc As New Process() proc.StartInfo.FileName =UninstallString proc.Start() proc.WaitForExit() proc.Close() latter i found that it only work for straight file paths only, i mean with no command line argument like: C:\program files\someApp\uninstall.exe I make a list of list of all UninstallStrings of all application installed on my machine. i found few things like application installed using MSI, some were with rundll32 and few were with straight file path with some command argument like: My Silverlight SDK UninstallString, MSI Example MsiExec.exe /X{2012098D-EEE9-4769-8DD3-B038050854D4} My JetAudio UninstallString, RunDll32 Example RunDll32 C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\engine\6\INTEL3~1\Ctor.dll,LaunchSetup "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information{91F34319-08DE-457A-99C0-0BCDFAC145B9}\Setup.exe" -l0x9 My Google Chrome UninstallString, straight file path with command argument example "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.375.55\Installer\setup.exe" -uninstall The code i mentioned above does not work for these. i did some string parsing, separate two thing from UninstallString one is Filename and other is Arguments. like for MSI, filename is MSIEXEC.EXE and argument will be rest of the string, same for RunDLL32, same for straight file path with command argument. Now what am i facing is that, after every 2 or 3 days i come to know that this type of unistallstring is also not working. and why is that not working because it is a new type maybe abc C:\program files\someapp.exe -ddd so parse it too. is there any better way of doing that rather then parsing the string.

• Creating customized .dmg files upon download

  I want to distribute a cross-platform application for which the executable file is slightly different, depending on the user who downloaded it. This is done by having a placeholder string somewhere in the executable that is replaced with something user-specific upon download. The webserver that has to do these string replacements is a Linux machine. For Windows, the executable is not compressed in the installer .exe, so the string replacement is easy. For uncompressed Mac OS X .dmg files, this is also easy. However, .dmg files that are compressed with either gzip or bzip2 are not so easy. For example, in the latter case, the compressed .dmg is not one big bzip2-compressed disk image, but instead consists of a few different bzip2-compressed parts (with different block sizes) and a plist suffix. Also, decompressing and recompressing the different parts with bzip2 does not result in the original data, so I'm guessing Apple uses some different parameters to bzip2 than the command-line tool. Is there a way to generate a compressed .dmg from an uncompressed one on Linux (which does not have hdiutil)? Or maybe another suggestion for creating customized applications without pregenerating them? It should work without any input by the user.

• Can I use RegFree Com with an application written in Excel VBA?

  I have an application that is written in Excel VBA, myApp.xls. Currently we use InstallShield to distribute the application. Since we are moving to Windows Vista, I need to be able to install the application as a standard user. This does not allow for me to update the registry during the install process. In addition to the excel application we also have several VB6 applications. In order to install those applications, I was able to use RegFree com and Make My Manifest (MMM) as suggested by people on this forum (I greatly appreciate the insight btw!). This process, although a bit tedious, worked well. I then packaged the output from MMM in a VS '05 installer project and removed the UAC prompt on the msi using msiinfo.exe. Now I am faced with installing an application that basically lives in an Excel file. I modified a manifest that MMM created for me for one of my VB6 apps and tried to run the excel file through that, but I did not have much luck. Does anybody know of a way to do this? Does RegFree com work with VBA? Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks, Steve

• Installing Epic (Eclipse Plugin) in Pulse Explorer

  I'm trying to install EPIC using the Pulse Explorer for Eclipse (as I'm rather fond of sharing profiles :). When I go to install the plugin under my account, I get asked for a login into http://e-p-i-c.sf.net. However, the Epic's team documentation doesn't mention anything about a login. Here's what I've done: Gone into Pulse and created a new profile based on Eclipse Classic. Navigated to Software, added the EPIC software site to list of public sites, and chosen to install it. Added Pulse item to profile. Run the installer. The error shows up while it's all downloading/installing. Login boxes start to appear for epic related components, and I don't have credentials to put in so all I can do is hit cancel. If I hit cancel, the process fails at the end with the generic error message: "an unexpected error occurred preparing to install and/or launch the selected profile". Bundles that are failing to download are: org.epic.debug org.epic.doc org.epic.lib org.epic.perleditor org.epic.regxp org.epic.source The component that's exploding is called: org.eclipse.equinox.internal.p2.repository.Credentials$LoginCancelledException I've had the same effect on Pulse 0.5.x and 0.6.x. No clue where to go from here. Might contact the EPIC and Pulse teams and ask them, but thought that I'd get a better response from here. I'm somewhat sure I'm doing something wrong.

• Jboss EAP 5 and Tomcat 6 on the same Win env. (Jboss gets Toncat`s home page when`s up)

  Hi guys, I`m newbie to Java technologies, just trying to catch up some idea of it. I was trying to build a java environment to play with Eclipse, Mysql, Tomcat and Jboss and integrate these together. I did: 1. Installed jdk1.6.0_20 (including JAVA_HOME and path variables; I work on Win Vista), mysql 5 and eclipse-jee-galileo (the latest one, 3.6 I believe) and all went good - java programs are compiled and run getting a DB connection. 2. Installed Jboss enterprise-installer-5.0.1.jar with localhost:8080 and this also went good - run.bat started it and I could log in as admin thru its home page. I integrated it with eclipse and could start and stop it from there too. 3. I got apache-tomcat-6.0.26-windows-x86 and this also runs and stops from command line and from eclipse. But this one uses localhost:8080 without asking. Now the problem is when I start jboss I get Tomcat home page and I can`t fix it. Is it probably because both now use localhost:8080? BTW, does Jboss EAP 5 contain Tomcat inside and I shouldn't add that Tomcat separately? Thanks for you help in advance, Eddie

  Hi folks, I've been given the task of posting to a RESTful server. I'm new to the official "REST" but I've played with the concept before. However, this time I have an XML Payload example file that I am supposed to post. I'm struggling to figure out how the two relate. Can you help? Right now I can post to a specific site, say www.pcpost.com/schema/Application I can generate the URL for the inital, ie: postApplication?userid=4&... Being relatively new to web programming, I find that don't know how to take the following and interface it with the server. I'm at least familiar with Javascript and PHP. If this is impossible with those two types, I can learn whatever would be best. Thanks for your help on this. • Node.js running under IIS Express Keeps Crashing

  I recently resinstalled Windows 7 on my machine and went back to downloading and installing the tools to help me continue developing node.js windows azure web applications. I'm guessing its something to do with IIS Express on my machine.   I'm trying to write an installer for an app I created. I found a suggestion elsewhere that I was trying to follow and it mostly worked. My app is now in the "Open With" list. However, the app won't run at all. Could it be that it's because the app is not being started in its directory, so it can't find the dlls?   How do software houses like Microsoft or anti-virus companies patch/update their software? Anti virus companies dont send the complete executable; only new virus signatures I suppose. Similarly, Ive noticed microsoft sends certain files to the '$NtUninstallKB......$' folder that it creates when it the windows update program runs. I suppose there is an installer in each such folder there that replaces only those dlls that need to be updated or fixed. Questions Is there a universal method for doing this or does each house employ their own methods? I dont want to re-send the entire application to each individual client. Suppose if only certain dlls need to be changed or maybe some more added, how should I go about planning my final compiled application. Do I need to look at separating my application into multiple assemblies? If yes, then is there some compilation method that is allows to pack specific classes into a particular dll? What I have put down here are my thoughts on the subject and I could be wrong. Could anyone throw some light on this please? I am looking at implementing such a deployment and patch management technique for the .net platform. Thanks for your time.

• Problem with Silverlight 3 projects in Web Developer Express 2008

  Hi, I have a strange problem when working with silverlight 3 projects in Web Developer Express 2008. Mainly, I cannot show the design view of a XAML file. Also the XAML files (markup) are shown as plain text files (No Syntax coloring & No Intellisense). However I can write an application that is compiled and run successfully. I have the following installed on my machine: Windows XP SP3 Visual Web Developer Express 2008 SP1 & .NET 3.5 SP1 SL3 Requirements I had a few problems while installing SL3 SDK & Tool for VS. I repeated the process many times until the installation succeeded. The main problem was in the "SL Tools for VS" installation where I used to get an error in the middle. My workaround was to extract the MSI file and manually run the VWDxxx installer from the extracted files. Is this the cause of the problem? Kindly advise as it's impractical to work w/o Intellisense. • ActiveX not working properly with default security settings

  I have written an ActiveX control in C# and have made it working using regasm command, and it works fine as long as the security level is set to low.. Then as a next step I have made a .cab installer (ICD - Internet component downloader), and have signed my .cab file and ActiveX .dll file with a test certificate. when I hit the html page from my browser the installation parts works fine with default security settings of IE, but at the end it seems that nothing is installed and a red cross is shown on place of ActiveX. Moreover I have explored the Download Program Files folder under Windows directory, in status column it is showing word "unknown". while it is "installed" for all other activeX. what may be the problem. Moreover if i use the regasm command to register the assembly it works fine, and I have signed the ActiveX but still I have to move the security bar to low in my browser setting? why it is so? then what is the purpose of signing? I have used RegisterServer=yes in my .inf file Please let me know, if some one has gone through this problem already?
