• Single application through OpenVPN tunnel (Debian Lenny)

  I'm using Debian Lenny and I want to tunnel rtorrent only through a OpenVPN tunnel. I have a tunnel running, the config file looks like this: client dev tun proto udp remote openvpn.xxx.com 1194 resolv-retry infinite nobind persist-key persist-tun ca /etc/openvpn/xxx/keys/ca.crt cert /etc/openvpn/xxx/keys/client.crt key /etc/openvpn/xxx/keys/client.key tls-auth /etc/openvpn/xxx/keys/tls.key 1 ns-cert-type server comp-lzo verb 3 auth-user-pass script-security 3 reneg-sec 0 My idea is that I could run a sockd proxy internally that redirects traffic to the openvpn tunnel. I could use the *nix "proxifier" application "tsocks" to make it possible for rtorrent to connect through that proxy (as rtorrent doesn't support proxies). I have trouble configuring sockd as my IP inside the VPN changes every time I connect. This is a config file someone said would help: http://ircpimps.org/sockd.conf As my IP changes at each connect I don't know what to put in that config file. I have no control over the host side config file. Any help wanted. Any other method is very welcome.

  I have irritating with nginx. I set up in /usr/share/nginx/www/firstapp one application and in /usr/share/nginx/www/secondapp. in my default conf i setup that in / root localization i want first app: when write 9.9.9.9 in browser show me first app, and when i write 9.9.9.9/makeup, there not show me seccond app. Why first app displays me good, and seccondapp cannot? Please help me. • Free/opensource application for charting stock prices?

  I am looking for a free or FOSS software application for SIMPLY charting stock prices. I am not interested in any of the other nonsense typically bundled with such packages (technical analysis, back testing, tracking etc, etc). All I want to do is the following: Import file from CSV and plot on the chart Ability to scroll the chart left/right (zoom feature would be nice to) Ability to draw straight line (between 2 points) on the plot Ability to plot the graph for different resolutions (for e.g weekly, monthly - or some other custom resolution that I want) print the displayed graph (I can always use screen capture if printing is too much to ask) Thats all I want to do. I am not interested in anything else. I would have thought I could have found something by now. I would have written my own tool (I still will do that at a later stage), but I am a bit short of time at the moment, so I just want something that will do all of the above. Can anyone recommend a package. Last but not the least, I am running on Linux (and would prefer to do so - BUT if I have to, I can run on ahem - you know, Windows)

• Managing an application across multiple servers, or PXE vs cfEngine/Chef/Puppet

  We have an application that is running on a few (5 or so and will grow) boxes. The hardware is identical in all the machines, and ideally the software would be as well. I have been managing them by hand up until now, and don't want to anymore (static ip addresses, disabling all necessary services, installing required packages...) . Can anyone balance the pros and cons of the following options, or suggest something more intelligent? 1: Individually install centos on all the boxes and manage the configs with chef/cfengine/puppet. This would be good, as I have wanted an excuse to learn to use one of applications, but I don't know if this is actually the best solution. 2: Make one box perfect and image it. Serve the image over PXE and whenever I want to make modifications, I can just reboot the boxes from a new image. How do cluster guys normally handle things like having mac addresses in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg* files? We use infiniband as well, and it also refuses to start if the hwaddr is wrong. Can these be correctly generated at boot? I'm leaning towards the PXE solution, but I think monitoring with munin or nagios will be a little more complicated with this. Anyone have experience with this type of problem? All the servers have SSDs in them and are fast and powerful. Thanks, matt.

• AWS VPC public web application connecting to database via VPN

  What I am trying to do is set up a web application that is public facing but makes calls to a database that is on an internal network. I have been trying to set up an AWS VPC with a public subnet, private subnet, and hardware VPN access but I can't seem to get it to work. Can someone help me understand what the process flow here should be? My understanding is that I need a public subnet to handle the website requests and then a private subnet to connect to the VPN but what I do not understand is how to send requests down the chain and get the response. Basically what I am asking is how can I query the database via VPN from that public website? I've tried during rout forwarding but I can't successfully complete the process. Does anyone have any advice on something I can read on this subject or an FAQ on setting something like this up? Is it even possible? I'm out of my league here, this is not my area of expertise but I'm being asked to solve this problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

• Application (was Firefox) crash on first load on Ubuntu Linux on older Dell Laptop

  I've had a Dell Latitude laptop since about 2000 without managing to destroy it. A month ago the Windows 2000 system on it did something stupid to its file system and Windows was completely lost. No point in reinstalling Windows 2000, so I installed an Ubuntu Linux on the laptop. Everything seems normal (installed, rebooted, I can log in, run GnuChess, poke about). ... but ... when I attempt to launch Firefox from the top bar menu icon, I get a bunch of disk activity, the whirling cursor icon goes round a bit and then (WAS: everything stops: icon, mouse. Literally nothing happens for 5 minutes. Ubuntu is dead, as far as I can tell. EDIT : on further investigation, spinning icon, mouse operated by touchpad freeze. There's apparantly a little disk activity occuring about every 5 seconds. I wait 5-10 minutes, behavior doesn't change) A reboot, and I can repeat this reliably. So on the face of it, everything works but Firefox. That seems really strange. The only odd thing about this system when Firefox is booting is that while it has an Ethernet port (that worked fine under Windows), it isn't actually plugged into an Ethernet. As this is the first Firefox boot since the Ubuntu install, maybe Firefox mishandles Internet access? Why would that crash Ubuntu? (I need to go try the obvious experiment of plugging it in). EDIT: I tried to run the Disk manager tool, not that I cared what it was, just a menu-available application. It started up like Firefox, I get a little tag in the lower left saying Disk P*** something had started, and then the same behavior as Firefox. At this point, I don't think its the Ethernet. Is it possible that the Ubuntu disk driver can't handle the disk controller in this older laptop? The install seemed to go fine.

• Cherrypy web application won't communicate outside localhost via VPN

  I'm trying to run a Python2.7/Cherrypy web server on Win 7 which is connected to a VPN to establish a dedicate IP address. (If I run the exact same application on Win XP connected to the VPN it works fine.) On Win 7 I tried configuring it to use port 8080, 8005, or 80 with no improvements. I turned off Windows Firewall altogether to test and there was no improvement. If I run Apache on the Win 7 machine on port 80 it works fine so I'm pretty sure it's not the VPN service or router. If I go to WhatismyIP.com it shows that I have the IP address being provided by the VPN. Here is the Python code, but I suspect the problem is the network configuration: import cherrypy class HelloWorld: def index(self): return "Hello world!3" index.exposed = True cherrypy.root = HelloWorld() cherrypy.config.update({"global":{ "server.environment": "production", "server.socketPort": 8005 } }) cherrypy.server.start() This will return a web page if I go to localhost:8005, but not if I go to the VPN IP address:8005 from another machine. • Using NFS for scalable PHP/MySQL web application

  Here's the situation: I have a PHP/MySQL web application that accepts user uploads (pdf files). From these pdf files' pages a preview image is made on the fly and presented to the web app's users. Some pdfs might be on the large side, most will be under 50 MB but some extreme cases could be as large as a few hundred MB. A little waiting for the preview image for large pdf files is acceptable but no more than a minute let's say. Everything is running on one server for now, but soon the app will hit the server's limit on both storage and processing power. My idea to solve the problem: To deal with this situation I had the idea of having one or more pdf processing servers as needed, and one or more file storage servers. These two types of servers are mounted to the server on which the actual app runs using NFS. The app could then use GearMan to delegate pdf processing tasks to these processing servers. The processing server can mount the storage server and read the file stored there, process it and write its output to that server. The servers I'm talking about will be amazon ec2 instances. The web app returns a link to the resulting pdf preview image on the storage server that was used which can then be used on the front end to show the image to the user. My question: I have zero experience with apps that use multiple servers, is this idea viable or is there a better way to do it? Is an NFS setup fast and reliable enough for this situation?

• Deploying a Django application in a virtual Ubuntu Server

  I have a virtualbox machine running Ubuntu Server 10.04LTS. My intention is to this machine to work like a VPS, this way I can learn and prepare for when I get a VPS service. Apache+mod_wsgi for deploying the Django app seems the right choice to me. I have the domain (marianofalcon.com.ar) but nothing else, no DNS. The problem is that I'm pretty lost with all the deployment stuff. I know how to configure mod_wsgi(with the django.wsgi file) and apache(creating a VirtualHost). Something is missing and I don't know what it is. I think that I lack networking skills ant that's the big problem. Trying to host the app on a virtualbox adds some difficulty because I don't know well what IP to use. • Spreadsheet application that can handle big data OS X

  I've been working with Excel for quite a while for some statistical analysis that I do regularly. The size of the data that I'm working with has gotten much larger as of late, however. The layout of the databases in question is quite simple, usually just three rows which includes a UNIX timestamp, and EST value, a proprietary numeric value and finally an average of the rows that have a timestamp +/- 1000 that row's timestamp (little AVERAGEIFS() formula). That formula and the EST conversion are the only formulas in the sheet. I'm beginning to work with files with 500,000+ rows. Running the average formula down the entire row takes forever. The end result is the production of print-worthy graphs. I'm looking for either a UNIX CL utility or separate spreadsheet/database application that can handle this amount of data without melting my CPU or making me wait an hour. Is there anything out there? TL;DR: Simple excel sheet with over half a million rows is getting too slow to work with. OS X alternatives?

  The players: my home computer, running Linux with an X server running. (Call it HOME.) a remote site, to which I can connect over the internet using a VPN. (SITE) a Linux computer at the remote site, to which I can connect with ssh -X and nicely have X clients displaying on my local server. (MIDDLE) a very old Irix machine (an Onyx) at the remote site, which has no SSH server (therefore I can't ssh -X to it), only an ssh client. (ONYX) Purpose I need to run an X11 application on the ONYX machine, and see the GUI on HOME. I think I stumble upon xauth issues. So far The current situation is: ? HOME connects to SITE ? A vncserver starts on MIDDLE:7 ? vncviewer on HOME connects to vncserver on MIDDLE ? ONYX starts a forwarding ssh session to MIDDLE: ssh -TfN -L 6007:127.0.0.1:6007 MIDDLE ? DISPLAY=localhost:7 xclient on ONYX fails with Xlib: connection to "127.0.0.1:7.0" refused by server I do know that the forwarding (6007:127.0.0.1:6007) succeeds. A previous attempt was: ? HOME connects to SITE ? HOME connects to MIDDLE: ssh -X MIDDLE (xclock displays on HOME, DISPLAY is 127.0.0.1:10) ? ONYX starts an SSH tunnel to MIDDLE: ssh -TfN -L 6010:127.0.0.1:6010 MIDDLE ? • Pulling application updates from closest server?

  Setup: 6 Major Sites with Server 2003/2008 DCs doing DHCP/AD Integrated DNS, each on their own subnet. All connect back to datacenter through a 3 mbps WAN ERP server running in the datacenter, accessed by clients at all sites Currently, when we update the software, I manually push a copy of the updated client/config files down to each DC. I have a script that we run on each PC to update the clients. It determines what subnet the PC is on, and pulls the software from that DC. It's messy, but it works. The client has an autoupdate feature, but it'll only pull from the application server (which is housed in the datacenter, over the 3 meg link). It takes forever, since the updates are not "patches" but a full version of the client, even for minor upgrades (bad design). After the most recent patch, you can configure the clients to pull from a different server. Unfortunately, it is the same for all clients. Is there some kind of DNS magic I can use to pull from the local server? For instance, if I tell the clients their update server is ERPUPDATE, can I have their local DNS server return a different IP for ERPUPDATE than the other sites? Example: Client 1 is at site A, client 2 is at site b. They each run the software and a version change is detected. As per the config files, the clients look to ERPUPDATE for their updated client. Client 1 queries DNS for the IP of ERPUPDATE at its current location (site A) DNS at site A returns 192.1.1.5 Client 1 pulls update from 192.1.1.5 Client 2 queries DNS for the IP of ERPUPDATE at its current location (site B) DNS at site B returns 192.1.2.5 Client 2 pulls update from 192.1.2.5 Excuse the poor explanation, I worked 61 hours over the weekend and haven't completely rebounded. I'll be happy to clarify if needed!

• Serve web application error messages from Http server

  I have nginx as a http server with tomcat as a backend (using proxy_pass). It works great but I want to define my own error pages (404, 500, etc.) and that they are served by nginx and not tomcat. For example I have the following resource: https://domain.com/resource which doesn't exist. If I [GET] that URL then I get a Not Found message from Tomcat and not from nginx. What I want is that every time Tomcat responds with a 404 (or any other error message) nginx sends itself a message to the user: some html file accessible by nginx. The way I have my nginx server configured is very easy, just: location / { proxy_pass http://localhost:8080/<webapp-name>/; } And I've configured port 8080, which is tomcat, as not accessible from outside this machine. I don't think that using different location directives in nginx configuration will work, because there are some resources that depend on the URL: https://domain.com/customer/<non-existent-customer-name>/[GET] Will always return 404 (or any other error message), while: https://domain.com/customer/<existent-customer>/[GET] Will return anything different from 404 (the customer exists). Is there any way of serving Tomcat (Application Server) error messages with Nginx (http Server)? To check the message sent by the proxy_pass directive and act upon it?

• Application Screen Repainting Issues

  I have this issue lately at work. It drives be nuts, and I finally stopped to ask this question. It's quite often that an application I've been running just randomly fails to repaint itself for a while, usually in the editor screen. I most often see this occurring with Expression Web, Visual Studio 2008/2010 and SQL Server Management studio. These applications are what I work in the most, so I'm not surprised to mostly see it here. But I was curious if anyone else had a solution for this. I've tried: Reboots. The screen shot below is about 10 minutes after a reboot. New Video Drivers. This machine is running a Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 video card with the latest drivers. Closing other applications, this is the only thing running right now. As far as hardware, this machine has Dual Quad-Core Xeon 2.83ghz Processors, with 10 gigs of memory, running Windows XP SP3 64bit. Any help would be great. JNK EDIT: Per comments from deleted (wrong) answer: I'm running dual monitors. Set it to single display, still occurred. Rebooted, and tried it again, and it still occurred. Switched it back to dual screen. My resolution is only 1400x900 on each.

  I'm trying to use the FolderBrowserDialog from my WPF application - nothing fancy. I don't much care that it has the Windows Forms look to it. I found a question with a suitable answer (How to use a FolderBrowserDialog from a WPF application), except I'm using MVVM. This was the answer I "implemented", except I can't get the window object and I'm just calling ShowDialog() without any parameters. On right side you will have - ToolbarSeach - as an first one link on it. Click on it. After clicking on it - You will see an option of "Open Project in xCode" on the title. Click on it & save the project to open it. Now, Click on run to execute this sample code. After compilation - it will give you two errors. something like this - "Interface Builder is unable to open documents of type iPad XIB." I don't know why this error is disturbing me? • A help system for a PHP web app

  Hi, As our new web app gets more complicated, so the need for help docs increases. I am not talking about documenting code, I am literally talking about application help. So myapp/help, or for example, enabling context help from a particular point in the app with a link such as myapp/help/users/create/ etc. Are there apps out there for doing this? For example, Wufoo use wordpress for http://wufoo.com/docs/ which I like (and understand wp, so its a nice solution), and Xero have a lovely ASPX http://help.xero.com/ interface. But I'm thinking there might be more dedicated implementations for what I'm looking for. We're on a linux, apache, postgresql, php stack, but a mysql supported installation is not the end of the world. Does anyone have any suggestions for this? It's a bit of a minefield when googling php + help + system.

  What is the best way to structure a VB.NET windows forms application so that code can be reused and the app can be extended easily. I used to create lots of new forms. This lead to lots of repeated code and forms which did similar things. Now, for forms which do similar jobs, such as view/edit/delete items from a specific db table, I create a form with the required controls, have the form create an instance of a class with params such as a collection of the controls and a string containing the db table name. Then the individual controls call functions of the class. Advanced forms will inherit and extend this basic form class. 1) Has there already been work done in this area? 2) Are there books / articles available which discuss the options available on this topic?   I'm trying to use the FolderBrowserDialog from my WPF application - nothing fancy. I don't much care that it has the Windows Forms look to it. However, when I call ShowDialog, I want to pass the owner window which is an IWin32Window. How do I get this from my WPF control? Actually, does it matter?
