  • WD MBWE II (White Strip Light) 2TB - unable to access data

    I have a WD MBWE II (White Strip Light) 2TB - (WD20000H2NC-00) Was working fine until a few days ago. I guess there was a power failure and after that I am unable to access the 'Public' or the 'Download' folder anymore. I have been searching for answers everywhere but came up empty handed. Web GUI still works, SSH works. I hooked up both the drives on my PC and UFS Explorer sees the drive. But so far I am unable to retrieve any of my data. I do not remember what RAID setting I used when I first got the drive. I can see from GUI that it is set as "Stripe". The drive contains 10 years of family pictures which I really do not want to loose. Sadly and stupidly, I didn't even keep a backup of this drive. Can somebody please help or point me in the right direction. Thank you in advance for your help. Disk Utility on Ubuntu reports 1405 bad sectors on one drive. How can I retrieve my data? Please help.   • How to export SQL Server data from corrupted database (with disk write error)

    IT realised there was a disk write error on our production SQL Server 2005 and hence was causing the backups to fail. By the time they had realised this the nightly backup was old, so were not able to just restore the backup on another server. The database is still running and being used constantly. However DBCC CheckDB fails. Also the SQL Server backup task fails, Copy Database fails, Export Data Wizard fails. However it seems all the data can be read from the tables (i.e using bcp etc) Another observation I have made is that the Transaction Log is nearly double the size of the Database. (Does that mean all the changes arent being written to the MDF?) What would be the best plan of attack to get the database to a state where backups are working and the data is safe? Take the database offline and use the MDF/LDF to somehow create the database on another sql server? Export the data from the database using bcp. Create the database (use the Generate Scripts function on the corrupt db to create the schema on the new db) on another sql server and use bcp again to import the data. Some other option that is the right course of action in this situation? The IT manager says the data is safe as if the server fails, the data can be restored from the mdf/ldf. I'm not sure so insisted that we start exporting the data each night as a failsafe (using bcp for example). IT are also having issues on the hardware side of things as supposedly the disk error in on a virtualized disk and can't be rebuilt like a normal raid array (or something like that). Please excuse my use of incorrect terminology and incorrect assumptions on how Sql Server operates.   • I have finally traded my Blackberry in for a Droid!

    Over the years I have used a number of different types of phones. Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Nokia, and now Android. Until the Blackberry, which was my last phone (and I still have one issued from my office) I had never found a phone that “just worked” especially with email and messaging. The Blackberry did, and does, excel at those functions. My last personal phone was a Storm 1 which was Blackberry’s first touch screen phone. The Storm 2 was an improved version that fixed some screen press detection issues from the first model and it added Wifi. Over the last few years I have watched others acquire and fall in love with their ‘Droid’s including a number of iPhone users which surprised me. Our office has until recently only supported Blackberry phones, adding iPhones within the last year or so. When I spoke with our internal telecom folks they confirmed they were evaluating Android phones, but felt they still were not secure enough out of the box for corporate use and SOX compliance. That being said, as a personal phone, the Droid Rocks! I am impressed with its speed, the number of apps available, and the overall design. It is not as “flashy” as an iPhone but it does everything that I care about and more. The model I bought is the Motorola Droid 2 Global from Verizon. It is currently running Android 2.2 for it’s OS, 2.3 is just around the corner. It has 8 gigs of internal flash memory and can handle up to a 32 gig SDCard. (I currently have 2 8 gig cards, one for backups, and have ordered a 16 gig card!) Being a geek at heart, I “rooted” the phone which means gained superuser access to the OS on the phone. And opens a number of doors for further modifications down the road. Also being a geek meant I have already setup a development environment and built and deployed the obligatory “Hello Droid” application.   • QuickReport.ExportToFilter throws "stack overflow" error when used in TWebModule

    I have a web application using the TWebModule component. It runs as a module on Apache. The code below throws a "Stack Overflow" error on the ExportToFilter. The same exact code works fine from a Winforms Application and even a service for that matter.   • Java 2D Game Frameworks

    I have been looking at frameworks for writing 2D games in Java - part of a growing desire to rediscover my roots in writing those simple but addictive video games. I have googled and found some possibilities, but it's hard to judge which is best without investing significant time in each. Does anyone out there have any recommendations from experience, preferably with a list of pro's and con's for the framework. NOTE: I am not looking so much for comparisons between frameworks but, rather, feedback on any given framework from actually having used it firsthand, or knowing someone who has. The other possibility I am considering is rolling my own, but would rather not. EDIT: I am targeting Java on the Desktop, and expect capable machines, though not state of the art. A: I’m proudly serving as a principal analyst at Altimeter Group, a research based advisory firm in Silicon Valley. My career path, well, let’s just say it’s a long and winding road. As a kid, I was fascinated with technology. I learned programming at an early age and found myself naturally drawn to all things tech. I started my career as a database programmer at a technology marketing agency in Southern California. When I saw the chance to work with tech companies and help them better market their capabilities to businesses and consumers, I switched focus from programming to marketing and advertising. As technologist, my approach to marketing was different. I didn’t believe in hype, fluff or buzz words. I believed in translating features into benefits and specifications and capabilities into solutions for real world problems and opportunities. In the mid 90’s I experimented with direct to consumer/customer engagement in dedicated technology forums and boards. I quickly realized that the entire approach to do so would need to change. Therefore, I learned and developed new methods for a more social and informed way of engaging people in ways that helped them, marketed the company, and also tied to tangible benefits for the company. This work would lead me to start an agency in 1999 dedicated to interactive marketing. As I continued to experiment with interactive platforms, I developed interesting methods for converting one-to-many forms of media into one-to-one-to-many programs. I ran that company until joining Altimeter Group. Along the way, in the early 2000s, I realized that everything was changing and that there were others like me finding success in what would become a more social form of media. I dedicated a significant amount of my time to sharing everything that I learned in the form of articles, blogs, and eventually books. It would later become much bigger than marketing, this would lead to a decade of work, that still continues, in business transformation.     My team and I need to work on a project whose bugs are filed in Bugzilla, using Mylyn. Do you know of any tool or plug-in that provides scrum-inspired burndown charts to Bugzilla or Mylyn? Hopefully, this tool would be free for commercial usage, but we're not closed to commercial tools. Update: 4 hours of research allowed me to find very few free tools. Looks like bugzilla isn't popular in agile teams! And obviously, it's not the best fit.

  • SQL SERVER – Interview Questions and Answers – Frequently Asked Questions – Introduction – Day 1 of 31

    List of all the Interview Questions and Answers Series blogs Posts covering interview questions and answers always make for interesting reading.  Some people like the subject for their helpful hints and thought provoking subject, and others dislike these posts because they feel it is nothing more than cheating.  I’d like to discuss the pros and cons of a Question and Answer format here. Interview Questions and Answers are Helpful Just like blog posts, books, and articles, interview Question and Answer discussions are learning material.  The popular Dummy’s books or Idiots Guides are not only for “dummies,” but can help everyone relearn the fundamentals.  Question and Answer discussions can serve the same purpose.  You could call this SQL Server Fundamentals or SQL Server 101. I have administrated hundreds of interviews during my career and I have noticed that sometimes an interviewee with several years of experience lacks an understanding of the fundamentals.  These individuals have been in the industry for so long, usually working on a very specific project, that the ABCs of the business have slipped their mind. Or, when a college graduate is looking to get into the industry, he is not expected to have experience since he is just graduated. However, the new grad is expected to have an understanding of fundamentals and theory.  Sometimes after the stress of final exams and graduation, it can be difficult to remember the correct answers to interview questions, though. An interview Question and Answer discussion can be very helpful to both these individuals.  It is simply a way to go back over the building blocks of a topic.  Many times a simple review like this will help “jog” your memory, and all those previously-memorized facts will come flooding back to you.  It is not a way to re-learn a topic, but a way to remind yourself of what you already know. A Question and Answer discussion can also be a way to go over old topics in a more interesting manner.  Especially if you have been working in the industry, or taking lots of classes on the topic, everything you read can sound like a repeat of what you already know.  Going over a topic in a new format can make the material seem fresh and interesting.  And an interested mind will be more engaged and remember more in the end. Interview Questions and Answers are Harmful A common argument against a Question and Answer discussion is that it will give someone a “cheat sheet.” A new guy with relatively little experience can read the interview questions and answers, and then memorize them. When an interviewer asks him the same questions, he will repeat the answers and get the job. Honestly, is he good hire because he memorized the interview questions? Wouldn’t it be better for the interviewer to hire someone with actual experience?  The answer is not as easy as it seems – there are many different factors to be considered. If the interviewer is asking fundamentals-related questions only, he gets the answers he wants to hear, and then hires this first candidate – there is a good chance that he is hiring based on personality rather than experience.  If the interviewer is smart he will ask deeper questions, have more than one person on the interview team, and interview a variety of candidates.  If one interviewee happens to memorize some answers, it usually doesn’t mean he will automatically get the job at the expense of more qualified candidates. Another argument against interview Question and Answers is that it will give candidates a false sense of confidence, and that they will appear more qualified than they are. Well, if that is true, it will not last after the first interview when the candidate is asked difficult questions and he cannot find the answers in the list of interview Questions and Answers.  Besides, confidence is one of the best things to walk into an interview with! In today’s competitive job market, there are often hundreds of candidates applying for the same position.  With so many applicants to choose from, interviewers must make decisions about who to call back and who to hire based on their gut feeling.  One drawback to reading an interview Question and Answer article is that you might sound very boring in your interview – saying the same thing as every single candidate, and parroting answers that sound like someone else wrote them for you – because they did.  However, it is definitely better to go to an interview prepared, just make sure that you give a lot of thought to your answers to make them sound like your own voice.  Remember that you will be hired based on your skills as well as your personality, so don’t think that having all the right answers will make get you hired.  A good interviewee will be prepared, confident, and know how to stand out. My Opinion A list of interview Questions and Answers is really helpful as a refresher or for beginners. To really ace an interview, one needs to have real-world, hands-on experience with SQL Server as well. Interview questions just serve as a starter or easy read for experienced professionals. When I have to learn new technology, I often search online for interview questions and get an idea about the breadth and depth of the technology.   • PostgreSQL / Ruby for commercial application

    I am planning a web-based commercial application with front-end RoR and back-end PostgreSQL. I've some confusion about RoR and PostgreSQL Edition to use. For RoR, I have Aptana RADRails installed. For PostgreSQL, a free variant is also available at EnterpriseDB. Previously I installed a free EnterpriseDB PostgreSQL variant and it was very smooth and had professional touch. It was quite different from the one available from PostgreSQL website. I want to know which IDE and RoR variant to use for my project. I have no idea of Ruby and Rails. I will be learning and developing simultaneously. Also, which PostgreSQL variant to use? Can these two technologies be used for a developing a commercial application?

    Hi everybody. I'm using CKeditor 3 and I need integrate a filebrowser/uploader. It need to be free.   • Online Perforce Repositories

    Is anyone aware of of anybody offering hosted perforce servers? It doesn't have to be free - but preferably not too expensive! My understanding of Perforce is that it's free to use for personal projects, which mine is. Currently I have a perforce server setup on the same machine as the code is on which doesn't offer much security in case of computer failure. If not, can anyone recommend one of the alternative solutions that is similar to Perforce? I have experience of SVN but cannot say I enjoy the experience.

    Microsoft Silverlight 4 is in beta. It supports PCM audio output. It would be madness to stream PCM over internet (for ex in P2P chart webApp) so we need Pure C# open source PCM to Ogg convertor. No unmanaged code, nothing going out of .net sandbox. So does any one know such Pure C# open source PCM to Ogg convertor? What do I need: Open Source Libs for encoding. Tutorials and blog articles on How to do it, about etc. BTW: why Pure C#? - because Silverlight 4 does not support unmanaged or just not C# DLL's. BTW2: this question is similar to this one but it is different because Ogg is Open Source, free while mp3 will not be free until 2010

  • 24 hours per day and freelance programming jobs

    I'm working on stimulanting projects at my job. I like it. I like programming! I have accumulated several years of experience now. Sometime happens I develop other projects (even more stimulant of my main job). Some more money cannot hurts! The problem is that my free time has decreased a lot, leading me to develop until late evening. I usually program each day (I like to develop my own projects, even if only a few lines at a time). But it is one thing to plan for my pleasure, it is one thing to plan for business. So, my question is how to balance free time with these additional jobs? What experiences do you have? How much you can develop for long time (in a medium interval, say, weeks)? Every thought is welcome!

    Hallo, I have a small useful application (Websites managment tool developed in Java) which I want to publish online for free (every one can use it for free). But I do not want to make it opne source yet. It is additional affort to clean up the code, documantation and so on... And this is just a small useful tool. Can I use the MIT license in this case, or the MIT license obligates me to distribute the source code? Which license is best in this case? Thanks.

  • Reputable geo-ip location Services

    Who are some of the reputable and/or stable geo-ip location service providers? I'm specing out an application that needs this functionality, and whenever I google geo-ip I get a ton of hits, but it's hard to tell who the legit providers are and who the fly-by-night folks are. Ideally I'd like something that can run without a call to an external API (i.e. regular database updates), but would be interested in hearing about experience with providers who offer live/http services. If it ran in PHP that would be great, but so long as it could run in a *nix environment that's fine. I'd prefer a paid service from a reputable provider than an awesome free service that could vanish tomorrow (free services are welcome, just convince me they're not going to vanish).

  • known memory leaks in 3ds max?

    I've set up a script in 3ds max to render a bunch of animations into frames. To do this, I open up a file with all of the materials, load an animation (as a bip) onto the figure, then render. We were seeing a problem where eventually the script would fail because it was unable to open the next file-- max had consumed all of the system memory. Closing max, of course, freed the memory, and we were able to continue with the script. I checked out the heapfree variable, hoping to see a memory leak within my script, hoping to see a memory leak within my own (maxscript) code-- but the amount of free space was the same after every animation. Then, it must be 3ds max which is consuming all of that memory. Nothing in max need be saved from animation to animation-- is there some way to get max to free that memory? (I've tried resetMaxFile() and manually deleting all of the objects in the scene). Is there any known sets of operations that cause max to grow out of control?

    I am making a Smart House Control System right now, and I have a little problem. I was thinking on using Cosmos for a base system, and adding the needed namespace libraries to it, but as the usual System.Speech.Recognition namespace depends too much on Windows Speech API, I have to forget about using it. So my question is, is there any (free if possible) voice recognition and/or speech speech synthesizer library for C#, what has the following: support for multi-language speaking extracting text content from speech sample synthesizing speech with selectable (or user-written) speech pattern (voice) A general usage, non-windows dependent library would be the best, and of course, if it was free too.
