• x.265 in ffmpeg

  Today I found out that x265 is already present in ffmpeg so I compiled ffmpeg with this guide Sadly libx265 did not work on ubuntu, however on windows I tried the same thing with zeranoe ffmpeg build and it worked without a problem. So do you think i did something wrong or it is not yet implemented in linux build (using that guide)? • How should a team share/store game content during development?

  Other than Dropbox, what out there has been especially useful for storing and sharing game content like images during development (similar feature set to Dropbox like working offline, automatic syncing and support for windows/osx)? We are looking into hosting our own SharePoint server but it seems to be really focused on documents... Maybe Box.net would work? EDIT For code, we are using Git. To be more precise, I was looking for an easy, automatic way for content produced by artists/audio engineers to be available to everyone. Features like approvals of assets don't hurt either. Following the answer linked by Tetrad, Alienbrain looked pretty interesting but..is way out of our budget (may be something to invest in in the future). What ended up doing... We were going to go with Box.net but downloading the sync apps for desktop use required us to wait to be contacted by them for some reason. We did not have much time to wait so we ended up going with Dropbox Teams. Box.net has a nice feature set but we never really felt held back without them. Thanks for the help :).

• How to specify the order of startup scripts (CLI)?

  Startup really confuses me. It seems various methods for starting things happen in different locations all over the place. But is there a way to define the order they are loaded? Specifically... I have an issue where Plex Media Server (PMS) can't be discovered by clients if the server's VPN connection is established prior PMS starting. It was driving me nuts, but I discovered that I could solve the problem by shutting down PMS, shutting down the VPN, turning on PMS and then turning on VPN. I'm not exactly sure how PMS auto-loads itself at startup, but the VPN is something I defined by editing: /etc/network/if-up.d/slickvpn with the following: #! /bin/bash REQUIRED_CONNECTION_NAME="Wired connection 1" VPN_CONNECTION_NAME="myvpn" activ_con=$(nmcli con status | grep "${REQUIRED_CONNECTION_NAME}") activ_vpn=$(nmcli con status | grep "${VPN_CONNECTION_NAME}") if [ "${activ_con}" -a ! "${activ_vpn}" ]; then nmcli con up id "${VPN_CONNECTION_NAME}" fi That's a script I found somewhere (I think on this site) when looking for help autoconnecting a VPN. So I guess /etc/network/if-up.d/ scripts are initiated prior to the PMS service. How can I flip that? Or other solution?

• Problem with understanding how to start

  Okay, this might be a little off-topic but i try anyway. Sorry to bother. So i'm working as sysadmin for at least 5 years now and i quite enjoy IT field in general. Somehow i was never interested in programming much but always want to learn something at least easy and for personal usage. As sysadmin i need scripting skills so learn shell scripting without much problems, i also try to learn pascal, delphi, basic over time and must recent was python. Well, my problem is when i try to learn programming i just can't apply what i learn from the books to the real word. What i mean is i understand there are data structures, algorithms, variables, lib's, if-then logic, etc. but i just can't understand how to apply this things when i want to do real things. Like i want to get a something simple as parse web page, i draw a quick algorithm like get a web page, find a word on it and write a to file, on the paper everything look simple but when i get to the coding i just stuck pretty much from the start. I try read code of the real programs that just totally confusing especially big parts with many classes so i'm just quickly lost a trail what this code do. I think i just lack some fundamentals to see a big picture but don't really know what this might be? Or maybe i just don't have a passion to programming at all... My best bet was a shell scripting so i have really no problems to write complex scripts but this just not enough. Recently i was read around 5 or 6 python books because everyone say it's so easy even kid can code something but still no much luck, python is good and easy but i can't make something harder then a prodecurial style code like in bash for easy things but when i want harder things i'm still stuck. In college i was also not a math and tech guy and like to study non-tech stuff mostly like economy, psychology maybe that my problem? Anyway any advice would be greatly appriciated.

• How do I configure upstart to run a script on shutdown when the process takes longer than 10secs?

  I am running ubuntu 11.10 in a virtual machine (VirtualBox) to learn more about development in linux. I am using a git repository to save my work and have written a script to bundle my work up and save it to the shared folder for use while the virtual machine is not running. I would like to automatically run this script before shutdown so that my work is always available if the vm is off (currently I have to manually run the script). I don't know if upstart is the best way to accomplish this, but this is the config that I wrote as a test: description "test script to run at shutdown" start on runlevel [056] task script touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/start sleep 15 touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/start-long end script pre-start script touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/pre-start sleep 15 touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/pre-start-long end script post-start script touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/post-start sleep 15 touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/post-start-long end script pre-stop script touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/pre-stop sleep 15 touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/pre-stop-long end script post-stop script touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/post-stop sleep 15 touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/post-stop-long end script The result is that only one touch is accomplished (the first touch in pre-start).   What does a company need to offer you (apart from a fat pay cheque) for you to work for them? I am aware of this question, which is from an employer's perspective. I am interested in your views as employees. To get the discussion started, here is a list off the top of my head (not in any particular order): High-end computer with a huge screen or two. The best software tool money can buy as per Joel's test). That isn't too much to ask given many of the best tools are free (think git). Flexibility is a bonus- if a particular platform/ piece of software is not absolutely required, I would like to pick my OS and IDE. A quality chair Quiet workspace. Open plan is fine as long as there are meeting rooms so that there is no constant chatter going on around me. Spacious workspace. I would rather have more than three inches between my mouse and the person next to me's keyboard. Food and drink at work. Many companies these days have fruit baskets, biscuits, etc available to their employees, some even offer free lunch. Education. If my employer wants my skills to stay up-to-date, they should at the very least understand I need time to learn. If they want to pay for my books and conference registration fees, I am more than happy to accept. Other options include organizing internal knowledge exchange days or inviting speakers from outside. Flexible hours/ option to work from home is a bonus

• Optimistic non-locking copy of InnoDB .frm files

  MySQL Enterprise Backup(MEB) does hot backup of innodb data and log files. Till MEB 3.6.1, the user backs up the only innodb tables in a 3 step process: STEP 1. Take backup using --only-innodb option STEP 2. Temporarily make the table read only by executing “FLUSH TABLES WITH READ LOCK” MEB 3.7.0 has an enhancement to innodb file copying. The .frm files gets copied along with the hot backup done for innodb files. I would like to make the blog a little interactive by explaining the feature as answers: 1. What are these .frm files? The files containing the metadata, such as the table definition, of a MySQL table. For backups, the full set of .frm files are always required along with the backup data, to be able to restore tables that are altered or dropped after the backup. 2. Can the .frm files not be copied by MEB itself? --only-innodb-with-frm is the new option introduced in MEB 3.7.1 to do a copy of .frm files without locking the tables during backup operation itself. This is to reduce the pain of manually copying the .frm files. The option is intended for backups where you can ensure that no ALTER TABLE, CREATE TABLE, DROP TABLE, or other DDL statements modify the .frm files for InnoDB tables during the backup operation. 3. How is data consistency ensured? MEB does validation of the .frm files after copying by comparing with the server directory to see if the timestamps of any of the .frm files is greater than the saved system time (check .frm time).  This change in timestamp of the .frm files will show if a table is altered during the process of backup. The total number of frm files in the server directory is also verified against the copied contents. If the number of .frm files is less compared to server directory, it shows that table/tables have been dropped during the process of backup. If the number of .frm files is more compared to server directory, it shows that new table/tables have been created during backup operation. 4. How does MEB handle data inconsistency? MEB copies the .frm files through several iterations,  does the validation and throws a WARNING if there is any inconsistency found in .frm files at the end of backup operation. This means the user is warned of some DDL operations that had occurred during backup operation, and has to manually copy the .frm files or do a backup again. 5. What is the option and explain its usage? The option introduced is --only-innodb-with-frm which does optimistic copy of .frm files without locking. This can be used when the user wants to backup only innodb tables along with .frm files. The option can take one of the 2 values: all | related. --only-innodb-with-frm=all does copy of all .frm files of all innodb tables. --only-innodb-with-frm=related works in conjunction with --include option.This is to allow partial backup of .frm files corresponding to the tables specified in --include.   Does anyone know of a tutorial for using TeamCity with github with ssh private keys. I have tried to set up git hub to connect and I either get a authentication error or get access denied. I am running TeamCity on Windows 2003. I am running the build agent as a custom account. I am running the web server under the administrator account. I have create a key for the custom account and administrator account. I now get an error that: The connection test failed: com.jcraft.jsch.JSchException: java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.ssh (Access is denied) If anyone has successfully set this up please help. I am going on 3 hours into this and want to get it solved. Thanks.

  Hello, is it possible to restart Tomcat6 by executing a JSP? This because I would like to deploy the changes of an application by doing it remotely using the webserver. The deploy script is written in bash and it checkouts the latest version from the svn, then package it as a war, then copy it in /webapps/ while adding some libs. If I execute it from a JSP (for example by using System.execute(..) will it cause problems? The fact is that the script itself is something like: /etc/init.d/tomcat6 stop # do things /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start so I don't think it would work.. is there a way to execute a stand-alone process from inside tomcat?

  I find a lot of Perl one-liners online. Sometimes I want to convert these one-liners into a script, because otherwise I'll forget the syntax of the one-liner. For example, I'm using the following command (from nagios.com): tail -f /var/log/nagios/nagios.log | perl -pe 's/(\d+)/localtime($1)/e' I'd to replace it with something like this: tail -f /var/log/nagios/nagios.log | ~/bin/nagiostime.pl However, I can't figure out the best way to quickly throw this stuff into a script. Does anyone have a quick way to throw these one-liners into a Bash or Perl script?

• Tiny, very-basic outgoing MTA?

  I am looking for a very tiny Mail-Transfer-Agent (MTA) for my smaller VPS which only need to send emails for new accounts or notifications. Originally, I used PHP sockets and wrote a 4kb STMP class to connect to google SMTP and send the emails - but I would like to be free of the 500 emails a day (or whatever) limit they have. On larger VPS I can run Postfix - but it takes about 50MB which makes it too big for a 128/256MB VPS. So are there any very tiny MTA's out there - or is there a rundown of the protocol of sending email (I guess it works by forwarding the mail through other servers till it reaches the correct end mail server right?) so I could build a smaller bash or PHP script for this outgoing stuff?

• Splitting android application in to two 'branches', free and paid.

  I've developed an android-application that I'dd like to put up on the marketplace. However, I want to split it into two separate applications, one free (with ads), and one paid (logically without ads). How would I go about doing that? I'm not wondering about adding ads (I've alreaddy managed that), but how to take one existing android-application (eclipse-project) and split it into two without having to create a new project and just copy-paste every file one by one (or in batch for that matter). Is that possible? Btw, I use GIT for SCM, so I've made two separate branches, one master and one free, but I need to set some cind of config-value that makes shure that the market separates them as two different applications. Also, when a user 'upgrades', is it possible to copy the db from the free app to the paid one?
