  • What are the common compliance standards for software products?

    This is a very generic question about software products. I would like to know what compliance standards are applicable to any software product. I know that question gives away nothing. So, here is an example to what I am referring to. CiSecurity Security Certification/Compliance lists out products ceritified by them to be compliant to the standards published at their website, i.e, cisecurity.org. Compliance could be as simple as answering a questionnaire for your product and approved by a thirdparty like cisecurity or it could apply to your whole organization, for instance, PCI-DSS compliance. I would be very interested in knowing the standards that products you know/designed/created, comply to. To give you the context behind this question: I am the developer of a data-masking tool. The said tool helps mask onscreen html text in a banking web application using filters. So, for instance, if the bank application lists out user information with ssn, my product when integrated with the banking product, automatically identifies ssn pattern and masks it into a pre-defined format.So, I have my product marketing team wanting more buzz words like compliance to be able to sell it to more banking clients. Hence, understanding "compliances that apply to products" is a key research item for me at this point. By which I meant, security compliances. Appreciate all your help and suggestions.

  • code throws std::bad_alloc, not enough memory or can it be a bug?

    I am parsing using a pretty large grammar (1.1 GB, it's data-oriented parsing). The parser I use (bitpar) is said to be optimized for highly ambiguous grammars. I'm getting this error: 1terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc' what(): St9bad_alloc dotest.sh: line 11: 16686 Aborted bitpar -p -b 1 -s top -u unknownwordsm -w pos.dfsa /tmp/gsyntax.pcfg /tmp/gsyntax.lex arbobanko.test arbobanko.results Is there hope? Does it mean that it has ran out of memory? It uses about 15 GB before it crashes. The machine I'm using has 32 GB of RAM, plus swap as well. It crashes before outputting a single parse tree. The parser is an efficient CYK chart parser using bit vector representations; I presume it is already near the limit of memory efficiency. If it really requires too much memory I could sample from the grammar rules, but this will decrease parse accuracy of course.

    This references this issue: Javascript SDK connect() function not working in chrome I asked for more information on how to resolve with localstorage and was asked to create a new topic. The answer was "A workaround is instead of using window.opener, push the oauth token into LocalStorage or SessionStorage and have the opener window listen to the Storage event." but i have no idea how to do that. It seems really simple, but i don't know where to start. I couldn't find an relevant examples. thanks for your help!

    There is a bug in the unit testing framework in Visual Studio 2010 with unit testing.  The bug appears in a very special circumstance involving an internal generic type. The bug causes the following exception to be thrown: System.InvalidProgramException: JIT Compiler encountered an internal limitation. This occurs under the following circumstances: Type being tested is internal or private Method being tested is generic  Method being tested has an out parameter Type accessor functionality used to access the internal type The exception is not thrown if the InternalsVisibleToAttribute is assigned to the source assembly and the accessor type is not used; nor is it thrown if the method is not a generic method.   • Audio splitting and noise removal on Windows

    My mother has about 100 hours of audio in a mix of MP3 and WAV files, the digitized versions of her vinyl records. Each file contains about 5 songs with a few seconds of (noisy) pause between them. My mother needs software for Windows XP with which she can listen to the files, find the gaps manually, split the files at the gaps found, reduce noise on each song, and export the songs to individual MP3 files. My mother has very limited software user skills and affinity, and she doesn't speak English. The simpler the software, the better for her, even if noise reduction is worse than with a more sophisticated, but more complicated software. I'd prefer free software, freeware or shareware (which can do all above). Please recommend something much simpler than Audacity. The software should guide the user through the process, always showing the next few available steps, and being intuitive in the sense that there are only a few allowed actions and it's obvious what they are and how to activate them. Which software would you recommend?

  • How to plan/manage multi-platform (mobile) products?

    Say I've to develop an app that runs on iOS, Android and Windows 8 Mobile. Now all three platforms are technically in different program languages. The only 'reuse' that I can see is that of the boxes-and-lines drawings (UML :) charts and nothing else. So how do companies/programmers manage the variation of the same product across different platforms especially since the implementation languages differ? It's 'easier' in the desktop world IMO given the plethora of languages and cross-platform libraries to make your life easier. Not so in the mobile world. More so, product line management principles don't seem to be all that applicable - what is same and variant doesn't really matter - the application is the same (conceptually) and the implementation is variant. Some difficulties that come to mind: Bug Fixing: Applications maybe designed in a similar manner but the bug identification and fixing would be radically different. A bug on iOS may/may-not be existent for that on Android. Or a bug fix approach on one platform may not be the same on another (unless it's a semantic bug like a!=b instead of a==b which would require the same 'approach' to fixing in essence Enhancements: Making a change on one platform would be radically different than on another Code-Design Divergence: They way the code is written/organized, the class structures etc., could be very different given the different implementation environments - leading to further reuse of the (above) UML models. There are of course many others - just keeping the development in sync and making sure all applications are up to the same version with the same set of features etc. Seems the effort is 3x that of a single application. So how exactly does one manage this nightmarish situation? Some thoughts: Split application to client/server to minimize the effect to client side only (not always doable) Use frameworks like Unity-3D that could take care of the cross-platform problem (mostly applicable to games and probably not to other applications etc.) Any other ways of managing a platform line? What are some proven approaches to managing/taming the effects?

A total of 1.04 seconds. Given this fact the only thing I can assume is causing this problem is the way that ASP.Net renders its controls between the two browsers.     Intro: I've seen lots of topics here on SO about software testing and other terms I don't understand. Problem: As a beginner developer I, unfortunately, have no idea how software testing works, not even how to test a simple function. This is a shame, but thats the truth. I also hope this question can help others beginners developers too. Question: Can you help me to understand this subject a little bit more? Maybe some questions to start would help: When I develop a function, how should I test it? For example: when working with a sum function, should I test every input value possible or just some limits? How about testing functions with strings as parameters? In a big program, do I have to test every single piece of code of it? When you guys program do you test every code written? How automated test works and how can I try one? How tools for automated testing works and what they do? I`ve heard about unit testing. Can I have a brief explanation on this?     Using rails 2.3.2 I have a partial _foo.rhtml that begins with a comment as follows: <% # here is a comment %> <li><%= foo %></li> When I render the partial from a view in the traditional way, e.g. <% some_numbers = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] %> <ul> <%= render :partial => "foo", :collection => some_numbers %> </ul> I found that the <li> and </li> tags are ommitted in the output -- i.e. the resulting HTML is <ul> 1 2 3 4 5 </ul> However, I can solve this problem by fixing _foo.rhtml to eliminate the space between the <% and the # so that the partial now reads: <%# here is a comment %> <li><%= foo %></li> My question: what's going on here? E.g., is <% # comment %> simply incorrect syntax for including comments in a template? Or is the problem more subtle? Thanks!

    I have two classes Software, Tag - they are related by ManyToMany. We CAN NOT create Software without putting the Tag to it. I guess it is not good test for that case - because it even do not try to SAVE data to SOFTWARE_TAG table. Of course i could do validation manually but i want implement it with hibernate, using some annotation or something. Is it possible? Or how would you do this?     I have some philosophical feeling that adding to an entity fields which doesn't mapped to the DB is a wrong way of solving problems. But are there any concrete situations where using @Transient fields leads to implicit and hard fixing problems? For example, is it possible that adding/removing 2nd level cache will break our app when there are @Transient fields in our entities?

    The knob on vertical JSlider's on my Windows 7 machine (with native look-and-feel) is really, really tiny in both directions. Not just skinny but short as well. Can anyone confirm this? Should I report it? If so, where? Thanks! For example, there are particular projects I've inherited which, when working on, I cannot use the CTRL+SPACE dropdown symbol list in the Delphi editor without getting an Access Violation error, this would easily top my list but there are many more.   • Is there any library/software available that can give me useful measurements of image quality?

    I realise measuring image quality in software is going to be really difficult, and I'm not looking for a quick-fix. Googling this is largely showing up research papers and discussions that go a bit over my head, so I was wondering if anyone in the SO community had any experience with doing any rough image quality assessment? I want to use this to scan a few thousand images and whittle it down to a few dozen images that are most likely of poor quality. I could then show these to a user and leave the rest to them. Obviously there are many metrics that can be a part of whether an image is of high/low quality, I'd be happy with anything that could take an image as an input and give some reasonable metrics to any of the basic image quality metrics like sharpness, dynamic range, noise, etc., leaving it up to my software to determine what's acceptable and what isn't. Some of the images are poor quality because they've been up-scaled drastically. If there isn't a way of getting metrics like I suggested above, is there any way to detect that an image has been up-scaled like this?

What happens in the following situation: u = User.find 1 u.name = 'Fonzi' u.name_changed? # => true u.email_changed? # => false u.valid? # => false : email_confirmation is required Basically, if I change if to unless the validates works as expected, won't validate if the email has not changed, will validate if the email changed. I thought the IF indicates "run this validation if the following function returns true. Seems to work backwards!? Am I just getting it wrong?

When I try to insert a closing after the selected element, it actually gets placed before the target.     Hi guys, I've been stuck with a compilation problem when building a standardised virtual machine on CentOS 5.4, and I'm in the dark here as to a) why this error is occurring, and b) how to fix it, and in the hope that someone else stumbles across this problem too, I'm hoping someone can help me find the solution here. I'm getting a configure: error: newly created file is older than distributed files! error when trying to compile Ruby Enterprise like below when I try to run the installer, and the solutions offered to on the forums (of checking the tine, and touching the files to update the time associated with them) don't seem to be helping here. What steps can I take to work out what the cause of this problem? Check your system clock This is a virtual machine running on virtualbox, and the time of the host and the virtual machine are identical, and up to date. I've also tried running this after updating time with an ntp-client, so no avail. Check your system clock" >&2;} { (exit 1); exit 1; }; } fi the thing that makes this really frustrating is that this script works sometimes, when the VM has been running for an hour or so it works, but not at boot. There's nothing I see in the crontab that suggests any hourly tasks are run that might change the state of the system enough make a difference to this script working. I'm totally at a loss when it comes to debugging beyond here. What's the best approach to take here? Thanks
