• Normalize FFT magnitude to imitate WMP

  So, I've been working on a little visualizer for sound files, just for fun. I basically wanted to imitate the "Scope" and "Ocean Mist" visualizers in Windows Media Player. Scope was easy enough, but I'm having problems with Ocean Mist. I'm pretty sure that it is some kind of frequency spectrum, but when I do an FFT on my waveform data, I'm not getting the data that corresponds to what Ocean Mist displays. The spectrum actually looks correct, so I knew there was nothing wrong with the FFT. I'm assuming that the visualizer runs the spectrum through some kind of filter, but I have no idea what it might be. Any ideas?

• Frame Accurate Browser Launchable Video Player ... ?

  I have a requirement where I need to enable playback (full screen) of a h.264 MPEG4 (thanks for the correction!) video from a local network, launchable from a browser link on a Windows workstation, and be frame accurate. By frame accurate I mean that I need to be able to scrub through the video in the same way you would with a vtr, stop at a frame, and then move backwards and forwards frame by frame (it is for a very specific compliance requirement where have to be able to check every frame if there is something that is potentially against broadcasting guidelines). The application itself is used to capture notes while viewing the material, so the end model is for a dual monitor workstation, with a web form in one, the video playing full screen in the second (no issue launching the video and manually having to move it to the second screen), and then the user controls the video via keyboard shortcuts or a jog shuttle. I have looked at QT, but the java bindings seem to be dead or nearly so, flash isn't frame accurate, VLC given its streaming heritage seems to be only able to move forward by a frame and not backwards, and all I have left are commercial offerings that in my experience are difficult and expensive to change. Any ideas of where I should look or alternative options? Any advice appreciated!

I have been trying to answer this for a few days now because I have no issues when connecting through NX Client (technically OpenNX) to FreeNX server from an iMac (with Lion), but if I try to connect with a Macbook Pro I get horrible keyboard binding issues. The fix that is working for me is to go into: ~/.nx/config/HOST.nxs and change: <option key="Current keyboard" value="false"/> <option key="Custom keyboard layout" value="empty"/> <option key="Grab keyboard" value="false"/> I have tried this on three NX Servers and all are fixed. Hope it helps or gets you closer. • upgrading to worpdress 3.5 erased all posts and pages, wiped database

  So I have upgraded to wordpress 3.5 and that seemed to have erased all posts and custom post types, media images, sliders etc' I have made a backup using both pressbackup and backupbuddy but when I try to restore the database (or everything). when it is done, if I look at the front end, everything is back and looks great but then when I go to the back end it says the database needs to be upgraded and doesn't let me bypass that. if i click ok it prompts the following message and after that everything is wiped again: WordPress database error: [Table 'db446353270.wp_categories' doesn't exist] SELECT * FROM wp_categories ORDER BY cat_ID WordPress database error: [Table 'db446353270.wp_post2cat' doesn't exist] SELECT post_id, category_id FROM wp_post2cat GROUP BY post_id, category_id WordPress database error: [Table 'db446353270.wp_linkcategories' doesn't exist] SELECT cat_id, cat_name FROM wp_linkcategories WordPress database error: [Unknown column 'link_category' in 'field list'] SELECT link_id, link_category FROM wp_links please advise.   How to display images in the form of pages where only one page is displayed at a time on blackberry screen. On scrolling down subsequent images will load at run time. So that loading of images do not consume time at startup. Edit: I am using loadimage function which loads images from blackberry device memory which loads images from specified path and resizing them.As number of images increases, it increases the startup time during opening of window.There is an in-built application(Media) in blackberry phone, where images load without taking any extra time. My idea is to display particular number of images which fit to the blackberry screen. As user scroll down to bottom of screen, application will then load and display more images. So my question is how to detect when user reached to bottom of blackberry screen and display one more row images.

  I am wanting to query the members of a given playlist. I have the correct playlist id, and want to use a managedQuery() to look at the playlist members in question. I've tried this: MediaStore.Audio.Playlists.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI.toString() for the "volume" argument. That gives me back a valid content URI that looks like: content://media/external/audio/playlists/2/members However, my cursor comes back null. I probably am way off base -- I know what I want to do is very simple.

I am having a strange problem that seems to be across all browsers and that is the slider slides the wrong distance if the page is refreshed via the refresh button. To re-create the problem please follow these steps - click this link http://www.aus-media.com/dev/site_BYS/index.html then click on the 'About Bikram Yoga' menu item at the bottom. Click on the 'more' and 'back' tabs on this page and you will notice it works fine. Then refresh the page by clicking the refresh button and try the more and back buttons again. • Internet Explorer Warning when embedding Youtube on HTTPS site?

  Our application is run over HTTPS which rarely presents any problems for us. When it comes to youtube however, the fact that they do not present any content over SSL connections is giving us some head ache when trying to embed clips. Mostly because of Internet Explorers famous little warning message: "Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely? This page contains content that will not be delivered using a secure HTTPS ... etc" I've tried to solve this in several ways. The most promising one was to use the ProxyPass functionality in Apache to map to YouTube. Like this: ProxyPass: /youtube/ http://www.youtube.com ProxyPassReverse: /youtube/ http://www.youtube.com This gets rid of the annoying warning. However, the youtube SWF fails to start streaming The SWF i manage to load into the browser simply states : "An error occurred, please try again later". Potential solutions are perhaps: Download youtube FLV:s and serve them out of own domain (gah) Use custom FLV-player and stream only FLV:s from youtube over a https proxy? Update 10 March: I've tried to use Googles Youtube API for ActionScript to load a player. It looked promising at first and I was able to load a player through my https:// proxy. However, the SWF that is loaded contains loads of explicit calls to different non-ssl urls to create authentication links for the FLV-stream and for loading different crossdomain policies. It really seems like we're not supposed to access flv-streams directly. This makes it very hard to bypass the Internet Explorer warning, short of ripping out the FLV:s from youtube and serving them out of your own domain. There are solutions out there for downloading youtubes FLV:s. But that is not compliant with the Youtube terms of use and is really not an option for us.

• Looking for Light Time Management Software Suggestions (for Mac)

  I'm looking for a simple project management app that performs task scheduling, along the line of Merlin or MS Project, but no where near as robustly. I don't need to deal with other (human) resources, but I work on anything from 3 to 6 different projects at a time. What I'd like is to be able to input deadlines and tasks, and have a schedule suggested to complete them. I do technical work, but I don't think I need anything specifically for software development, especially considering I do plenty of other kinds of things, like graphic design and social media PR. I'd really like this to be dead simple, as simple as possible. Suggestions? OmniPlan, something web-based? Definitely cannot afford anything too extravagant, really looking for something under $200. • Reading iTunesMovies file in iPhone?

  Hi there. In iPhone, the iPod app saves the media files (audio, video) with strange names and in weird folders (F00,F01 etc). There is a file named iTunesMovies in iPhone, which contains all the information about the metadata of those video files and how they are to be displayed in iPod app. I copied that to my Mac also, and when i tried to open that file in textEdit, it showed some alien characters which made me believe that it is encrypted may be(Thats just a wild guess). I want to read/change the contents of that iTunesMovies file. Can i do that? Is there any Framework which deals with that iTunesMovies file? Thanks in advance

  I'm using a self-made DesktopPaneUI for a JDesktopPane, I've written the proper methods for the class, and I'm running into trouble. When I resize the JDesktopPane, the background image doesn't resize with the frame. The image appears to be clipped at the size it was when the window initially opened. I'm giving it an image larger than the window, and I'm still having this problem. • PHP and Django: Nginx, FastCGI and Green Unicorn?

  I'm curious... I'm looking to have a really efficient setup for my slice for a client. I'm not an expert with servers and so am looking for good solid resources to help me set this up... It's been recommended to me that using FastCGI for PHP, Green Unicorn (gunicorn) for Django and Nginx for media is a good combination to have PHP and Django running on the same slice/server. This is needed due to have a main Django website and admin, but also to have a PHP forum on there too. Could anyone push me to some useful resources that would help me set this up on my slice? Or at least, any views or comments on this particular setup?

• How can I play compressed sound files in C# in a portable way?

  Is there a portable, not patent-restricted way to play compressed sound files in C# / .Net? I want to play short "jingle" sounds on various events occuring in the program. System.Media.SoundPlayer can handle only WAV, but those are typically to big to embed in a downloadable apllication. MP3 is protected with patents, so even if there was a fully managed decoder/player it wouldn't be free to redistribute. The best format available would seem to be OGG Vorbis, but I had no luck getting any C# Vorbis libraries to work (I managed to extract a raw PCM with csvorbis but I don't know how to play it afterwards). I neither want to distribute any binaries with my application nor depend on P/Invoke, as the project should run at least on Windows and Linux. • Should I move big data blobs in JSON or in separate binary connection?

  QUESTION: Is it better to send large data blobs in JSON for simplicity, or send them as binary data over a separate connection? If the former, can you offer tips on how to optimize the JSON to minimize size? If the latter, is it worth it to logically connect the JSON data to the binary data using an identifier that appears in both, e.g., as "data" : "< unique identifier " in the JSON and with the first bytes of the data blob being < unique identifier ? CONTEXT: My iPhone application needs to receive JSON data over the 3G network. This means that I need to think seriously about efficiency of data transfer, as well as the load on the CPU. Most of the data transfers will be relatively small packets of text data for which JSON is a natural format and for which there is no point in worrying much about efficiency. However, some of the most critical transfers will be big blobs of binary data -- definitely at least 100 kilobytes of data, and possibly closer to 1 megabyte as customers accumulate a longer history with the product. (Note: I will be caching what I can on the iPhone itself, but the data still has to be transferred at least once.) It is NOT streaming data. I will probably use a third-party JSON SDK -- the one I am using during development is here. Thanks

• CSS3PIE: Internet Explorer 6 doesn't download PIE.htc

  I'm using the very impressive CSS3PIE (http://css3pie.com) library to add support for CSS3 styles in IE6-8. It works fine in versions 7 and 8 and took a lot of pain out of the process. However, in IE6 no CSS3 styles are shown at all. In fact, looking at the server logs, I can see that IE6 doesn't even download the PIE.htc file, which is necessary for the magic to work. The content type for the file is set correctly as text/x-component, it's referenced by absolute URL, and works fine in IE7 and 8. I'm using Compass (www.compass-style.org) and the PIE helper which makes the CSS look like this: #shopping_cart { behavior: url("/media/static/css/PIE.htc"); position: relative; border-radius: 10px; } I can't figure out what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas what might cause IE6 to skip the behavior definition altogether? Cheers, Jonas
