Is there an imperative language with a Haskell-like type system?

I've tried to learn Haskell a few times over the last few years, and, maybe because I know mainly scripting languages, the functional-ness of it has always bothered me (monads seem like a huge mess for doing lots of I/O). However, I think it's type system is perfect. Reading through a guide to Haskell's types and typeclasses (like this), I don't really see a reason why they would require a functional language, and furthermore, they seem like they would be perfect for an industry-grade object-oriented language (like Java). This all begs the question: has anyone ever taken Haskell's typing system and made a imperative, OOP language with it? If so, I want to use it.

Am I making the right decision to take Information technology/system as my course in college?

I am a student who just ended my high school last year. I will be entering college any time between march to August. And.. I am thinking of studying Information technology/System as my course in college. The problem is, I am unsure if this is the right path for me. I don't know if this is what I really want for my future later on! Yes, I do love learning more about computers (prefer software to hardware). But what if I don't find them interesting later on when studying? I'm worried about that as I don't wanna regret later on. To add to that, my knowledge of programming and other software development is actually quite low. Can someone advise me on what should I do? Or tell me more about Information technology (what will I study later on in college and the career path)?

Okay I have a really annoying error. Its coming from my retainAll method. The problem is that I am outputting 1,3,5 in ints at the end, but I need 1,3,5,7,9. Ubuntu 13.10 on SSD (system) and HDD (data). Missing /grub/i386-pc/normal.mod

I've got HDD (750 GB) and SSD (16 GB). I want to install Ubuntu (13.10) on SSD, but because of its smallness I need to install /home, /var and /tmp on HDD. After that I would like to install Windows (system + data) on another partition of that HDD, but it is not important now. I installed Ubuntu (I had formatted and partitioned the disk before), but when I restarted my laptop it said: 'error: file '/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found. grub rescue'. I tried to reinstall Grub 2 using this tutorial (as sdXY I used sdb1, because it's the only one partion of my SSD), but it didn't work. Can anybody help me, please? Thanks, Tatarkow

Clickonce installation fails after addition of WCF service project

So I have a winform solution, deployed via clickonce. Eveything worked fine until i added a WCF project. (see error in parsing the manifest file at end of post) Now I notice that MSBuild compiles the service into a _PublishedWebsites dir. I don't know what the need for this is, but I am suspecting this is the cause of the problem. This wcf project references some other projects within the solution. I am actually hosting the wcf service within the application so I don't really need MSBuild to do all this for me. Passing a variable from Excel 2007 Custom Task Pane to Hosted PowerShell

I am testing PowerShell hosting using C#. is mysql index useful on column 'state' when only doing bit-operations on the column?

I have a lot of domain entities (stored in mysql) which undergo lots of different operations. Each operation is executed from a different program. I need to keep (flow)-state for these entities which I implemented in as a long field 'flowstate' used as a bitset. to query mysql for entities which have undergone a certain operation I do something like: select * from entities where state >> 7 & 1 = 1 Indicating bit 7 (cooresponding to operation 7) has run. (<-- simplified) Anyway, I really didn't pay attention to the performance implications of this setup in the beginning, and I think I'm in a bit of trouble since queries as the above run pretty slow. What I'd like to know: Does an mysql index on 'flowstate' help at all? After all it's not a single value Mysql can quickly find using a binary sort or whatever. If it doesn't, are there any other things I could do to speed things up? . Are there special 'mask-indices' for fields with use-cases as the above? TIA, Geert-jan

How to restrict access to a class's data based on state?

In an ETL application I am working on, we have three basic processes: Validate and parse an XML file of customer information from a third party Match values received in the file to values in our system Load customer data in our system The issue here is that we may need to display the customer information from any or all of the above states to an internal user and there is data in our customer class that will never be populated before the values have been matched in our system (step 2). For this reason, I would like to have the values not even be available to be accessed when the customer is in this state, and I would like to have to avoid some repeated logic everywhere like: if (customer.IsMatched) DisplayTextOnWeb(customer.SomeMatchedValue); My first thought for this was to add a couple interfaces on top of Customer that would only expose the properties and behaviors of the current state, and then only deal with those interfaces. The problem with this approach is that there seems to be no good way to move from an ICustomerWithNoMatchedValues to an ICustomerWithMatchedValues without doing direct casts, etc... (or at least I can't find one). I can't be the first to have come across this, how do you normally approach this? As a last caveat, I would like for this solution to play nice with FluentNHibernate :) Thanks in advance...

Advice on using .Net WorkFlow State Machine. What would you do?

So I've been tasked at work to write windows services to replace some old legacy VB6 WinForms apps currently running as services, consistently repeating tasks day-to-day. To give some general background, they have there own state machines built in to handle decision basing and not utilizing threading. A lot of the senior developers here thought it would be worth a try to look into WorkFlow to replace the state machines rather than write my own business logic and try threading it programmaticly. So it's WF vs. the "Old College Try" I suppose. My concern is that there aren't many books on the topic, and since it was implemented in .Net I've heard very little about it being used. I brought this up at work and another developer mentioned that it's because Biz Talk never really caught on and it was designed for that. So is it broken? Do you think it will be supported long enough to not worry so much? I don't want an ill-functioning process injected into my services, my new babies at work, and then have WF's keel over. Leaving me with having to replace them with my own code in the event of an emergency; which does not seem like much of a grand scenario to me. Any suggestions, recommendations would be super.

Is there "good" PRNG generating values without hidden state?

I need some good pseudo random number generator that can be computed like a pure function from its previous output without any state hiding. Under "good" I mean: I must be able to parametrize generator in such way that running it for 2^n iterations with any parameters should cover all or almost all values between 0 and 2^n - 1, where n is the number of bits in output value. Combined generator output of n + p bits must cover all or almost all values between 0 and 2^(n + p) - 1 if I run it for 2^n iterations for every possible combination of its parameters, where p is the number of bits in parameters. For example, LCG can be computed like a pure function and it can meet first condition, but it can not meet second one. Say, we have 32-bit generator, m = 2^32 and it is constant, our p = 64 (two 32-bit parameters a and c), n + p = 96, so we must peek data by three ints from output to meet second condition. Unfortunately, condition can not be meet because of strictly alternating sequence of odd and even ints in output. To overcome this, hidden state must be introduced, but that makes function not pure and breaks first condition (period become much longer). Am I wanting too much?

I've made several changes to the configuration files and UI, but I keep getting this error. It isn't logging it too in the event log nor the log files, which makes it very annoying to debug. Workflows not starting after fresh install

I just installed Dynamics CRM 4.0. It is working nicely except for workflows. They won't start. I turned on tracing and it appears that there is an IO error. The server is setup with IFD and SSL. If this is correct, how would one configure a CRM server for secure access, internal and external (IFD) and still allow asynch service to hit web site? Thanks for your help!

However, I now have a config file that has a custom sectionGroup defined of type System.Configuration.NameValueSectionHandler (I didn't write that part and I can't change it). ASP.NET MVC hosting problem, routing, handlers and modules

Hi, This is one of them again, hosting with fasthosts. I recently purchased a windows developer package from them. When I tried to deploy my ASP.NET 3.5 MVC project, which was working fine with the same host on a reseller account, it is not working. The reason to move from reseller to a normal Windows Developer package is, the MS-SQL server database is too expensive in a reseller account, strange! I contact them, and they are saying they upgraded the control panel. The technical support said, I need to disable the Modules and Handlers from the web.config file. Also I need to deploy them as .dll files. I am not sure how to do that. The website is partially working now. I think the problem is now with the routing. I have not deployed any .dlls apart from the System.Web.Mvc.dll, System.Web.Routing.dll and System.Web.Abstractions.dll. I have not got a clue on how to deploy the Modules and Handlers. The code that I commented on the web.config file is as follows.  Anybody got any ideas please. Thank you for your time.

I'm writing my first C# web application that connects to an XML based service. It requires that I present a certificate and feed the XML stream. It seems to authenticate properly but then it gives the following error: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 10.1.10.4:3128 The funny thing is that I'm not on a proxy or anything like that. I'm connecting directly to the internet. At one point I we did use a proxy that with internal NAT address. Introduction After watching this video from LIDNUG, about .NET code protection http://secureteam.net/lidnug_recording/Untitled.swf (especially from 46:30 to 57:30), I would to locate the call to a MessageBox.Show in an EXE I created. crazy asp.net error

Hi I am having a problem debugging an issue on a website. Everything works locally, the local and server databases are the same The strange thing about the error is that it points to my local dev machine in the error stack. Is that crazy or what, The files are published and being hosted on a server machine and the error is pointing to a line of code on my local dev box. I feel like I am losing the plot. Missing parameter error after running MySql query

Hello, I'm completely new to MySql and haven't used SqlDataSource with UpdateParameters before, so I'm probably missing something very obvious. When trying to update a record, the update does happen but then throws an error saying "'id' parameter is missing at the statement". So the query works and the database gets updated as it should, but an error is thrown afterwards.
