  • How to convince my boss that quality is a good thing to have in code?

    My boss came to me today to ask me if we could implement a certain feature in 1.5 days. I had a look at it and told him that 2 to 3 days would be more realistic. He then asked me: "And what if we do it quick and dirty?" I asked him to explain what he meant with "quick and dirty". It turns out, he wants us to write code as quickly as humanly possible by (for example) copying bits and pieces from other projects, putting all code in the code-behind of the WebForms pages, stop caring about DRY and SOLID and assuming that the code and functionalities will never ever have to be modified or changed. What's even worse, he doesn't want us do it for just this one feature, but for all the code we write. We can make more profit when we do things quick and dirty. Clients don't want to pay for you taking into account that something might change in the future. The profits for us are in delivering code as quick as possible. As long as the application does what it needs to do, the quality of the code doesn't matter. They never see the code. I have tried to convince him that this is a bad way to think as the manager of a software company, but he just wouldn't listen to my arguments: Developer motivation: I explained that it is hard to keep developers motivated when they are constantly under pressure of unrealistic deadlines and budget to write sloppy code very quickly. Readability: When a project gets passed on to another developer, cleaner and better structured code will be easier to read and understand. Maintainability: It is easier, safer and less time consuming to adapt, extend or change well written code. Testability: It is usually easier to test and find bugs in clean code. My co-workers are as baffled as I am by my boss' standpoint, but we can't seem to get to him. He keeps on saying that by making things more quickly, we can sell more projects, ask a lower price for them while still making a bigger profit. And in the end these projects pay the developer's salaries. What more can I say to make him see he is wrong? I want to buy him copies of Peopleware and The Mythical Man-Month, but I have a feeling they won't change his mind either. A lot of you will probably say something like "Run! Get out of there now!" or "I'd quit!", but that's not really an option since .NET web development jobs are rather rare in the region where I live...

  • New Enhancements for InnoDB Memcached

    In MySQL 5.6, we continued our development on InnoDB Memcached and completed a few widely desirable features that make InnoDB Memcached a competitive feature in more scenario. Notablely, they are 1) Support multiple table mapping 2) Added background thread to auto-commit long running transactions 3) Enhancement in binlog performance  Let’s go over each of these features one by one. And in the last section, we will go over a couple of internally performed performance tests. Support multiple table mapping In our earlier release, all InnoDB Memcached operations are mapped to a single InnoDB table. In the real life, user might want to use this InnoDB Memcached features on different tables. Thus being able to support access to different table at run time, and having different mapping for different connections becomes a very desirable feature. And in this GA release, we allow user just be able to do both. We will discuss the key concepts and key steps in using this feature. 1) "mapping name" in the "get" and "set" command In order to allow InnoDB Memcached map to a new table, the user (DBA) would still require to "pre-register" table(s) in InnoDB Memcached “containers” table (there is security consideration for this requirement). If you would like to know about “containers” table, please refer to my earlier blogs in blogs.innodb.com. Once registered, the InnoDB Memcached will then be able to look for such table when they are referred. Each of such registered table will have a unique "registration name" (or mapping_name) corresponding to the “name” field in the “containers” table.. To access these tables, user will include such "registration name" in their get or set commands, in the form of "get @@new_mapping_name.key", prefix "@@" is required for signaling a mapped table change. The key and the "mapping name" are separated by a configurable delimiter, by default, it is ".". So the syntax is: get [@@mapping_name.]key_name set [@@mapping_name.]key_name  or  get @@mapping_name set @@mapping_name Here is an example: Let's set up three tables in the "containers" table: The first is a map to InnoDB table "test/demo_test" table with mapping name "setup_1" INSERT INTO containers VALUES ("setup_1", "test", "demo_test", "c1", "c2", "c3", "c4", "c5", "PRIMARY");  Similarly, we set up table mappings for table "test/new_demo" with name "setup_2" and that to table "mydatabase/my_demo" with name "setup_3": INSERT INTO containers VALUES ("setup_2", "test", "new_demo", "c1", "c2", "c3", "c4", "c5", "secondary_index_x"); INSERT INTO containers VALUES ("setup_3", "my_database", "my_demo", "c1", "c2", "c3", "c4", "c5", "idx"); To switch to table "my_database/my_demo", and get the value corresponding to “key_a”, user will do: get @@setup_3.key_a (this will also output the value that corresponding to key "key_a" or simply get @@setup_3 Once this is done, this connection will switch to "my_database/my_demo" table until another table mapping switch is requested. so it can continue issue regular command like: get key_b  set key_c 0 0 7 These DMLs will all be directed to "my_database/my_demo" table. And this also implies that different connections can have different bindings (to different table). 2) Delimiter: For the delimiter "." that separates the "mapping name" and key value, we also added a configure option in the "config_options" system table with name of "table_map_delimiter": INSERT INTO config_options VALUES("table_map_delimiter", "."); So if user wants to change to a different delimiter, they can change it in the config_option table. 3) Default mapping: Once we have multiple table mapping, there should be always a "default" map setting. For this, we decided if there exists a mapping name of "default", then this will be chosen as default mapping. Otherwise, the first row of the containers table will chosen as default setting. Please note, user tables can be repeated in the "containers" table (for example, user wants to access different columns of the table in different settings), as long as they are using different mapping/configure names in the first column, which is enforced by a unique index. 4) bind command In addition, we also extend the protocol and added a bind command, its usage is fairly straightforward. To switch to "setup_3" mapping above, you simply issue: bind setup_3 This will switch this connection's InnoDB table to "my_database/my_demo" In summary, with this feature, you now can direct access to difference tables with difference session. And even a single connection, you can query into difference tables. Background thread to auto-commit long running transactions This is a feature related to the “batch” concept we discussed in earlier blogs. This “batch” feature allows us batch the read and write operations, and commit them only after certain calls. The “batch” size is controlled by the configure parameter “daemon_memcached_w_batch_size” and “daemon_memcached_r_batch_size”. This could significantly boost performance. However, it also comes with some disadvantages, for example, you will not be able to view “uncommitted” operations from SQL end unless you set transaction isolation level to read_uncommitted, and in addition, this will held certain row locks for extend period of time that might reduce the concurrency. To deal with this, we introduce a background thread that “auto-commits” the transaction if they are idle for certain amount of time (default is 5 seconds). The background thread will wake up every second and loop through every “connections” opened by Memcached, and check for idle transactions. And if such transaction is idle longer than certain limit and not being used, it will commit such transactions. This limit is configurable by change “innodb_api_bk_commit_interval”. Its default value is 5 seconds, and minimum is 1 second, and maximum is 1073741824 seconds. With the help of such background thread, you will not need to worry about long running uncommitted transactions when set daemon_memcached_w_batch_size and daemon_memcached_r_batch_size to a large number. This also reduces the number of locks that could be held due to long running transactions, and thus further increase the concurrency. Enhancement in binlog performance As you might all know, binlog operation is not done by InnoDB storage engine, rather it is handled in the MySQL layer. In order to support binlog operation through InnoDB Memcached, we would have to artificially create some MySQL constructs in order to access binlog handler APIs. In previous lab release, for simplicity consideration, we open and destroy these MySQL constructs (such as THD) for each operations. This required us to set the “batch” size always to 1 when binlog is on, no matter what “daemon_memcached_w_batch_size” and “daemon_memcached_r_batch_size” are configured to. This put a big restriction on our capability to scale, and also there are quite a bit overhead in creating destroying such constructs that bogs the performance down. With this release, we made necessary change that would keep MySQL constructs as long as they are valid for a particular connection. So there will not be repeated and redundant open and close (table) calls. And now even with binlog option is enabled (with innodb_api_enable_binlog,), we still can batch the transactions with daemon_memcached_w_batch_size and daemon_memcached_r_batch_size, thus scale the write/read performance. Although there are still overheads that makes InnoDB Memcached cannot perform as fast as when binlog is turned off. It is much better off comparing to previous release. And we are continuing optimize the solution is this area to improve the performance as much as possible. Performance Study: Amerandra of our System QA team have conducted some performance studies on queries through our InnoDB Memcached connection and plain SQL end. And it shows some interesting results. The test is conducted on a “Linux 2.6.32-300.7.1.el6uek.x86_64 ix86 (64)” machine with 16 GB Memory, Intel Xeon 2.0 GHz CPU X86_64 2 CPUs- 4 Core Each, 2 RAID DISKS (1027 GB,733.9GB). If it does exist, the “value” field of matching row (by key) will be updated. So when used in above query, it is a precompiled store procedure, and query will just execute such procedures. *** added “–daemon_memcached_option=-t8” (default is 4 threads) So we can see with this “set” query, InnoDB Memcached can run 4.5 to 9 time faster than MySQL server. Summary: In summary, we added several much-desired features to InnoDB Memcached in this release, allowing user to operate on different tables with this Memcached interface. We also now provide a background commit thread to commit long running idle transactions, thus allow user to configure large batch write/read without worrying about large number of rows held or not being able to see (uncommit) data. We also greatly enhanced the performance when Binlog is enabled.   • SSAS: Utility to check you have the correct data types and sizes in your cube definition

    This blog describes a tool I developed which allows you to compare the data types and data sizes found in the cube’s data source view with the data types/sizes of the corresponding dimensional attribute.  Why is this important?  Well when creating named queries in a cube’s data source view, it is often necessary to use the SQL CAST or CONVERT operation to change the data type to something more appropriate for SSAS.  This is particularly important when your cube is based on an Oracle data source or using custom SQL queries rather than views in the relational database.   The problem with BIDS is that if you change the underlying SQL query, then the size of the data type in the dimension does not update automatically.  This then causes problems during deployment whereby processing the dimension fails because the data in the relational database is wider than that allowed by the dimensional attribute. In particular, if you use some string manipulation functions provided by SQL Server or Oracle in your queries, you may find that the 10 character string you expect suddenly turns into an 8,000 character monster.  For example, the SQL Server function REPLACE returns column with a width of 8,000 characters.  So if you use this function in the named query in your DSV, you will get a column width of 8,000 characters.  Although the Oracle REPLACE function is far more intelligent, the generated column size could still be way bigger than the maximum length of the data actually in the field. Now this may not be a problem when prototyping, but in your production cubes you really should clean up this kind of thing as these massive strings will add to processing times and storage space. Similarly, you do not want to forget to change the size of the dimension attribute if your database columns increase in size. Introducing CheckCubeDataTypes Utiltity The CheckCubeDataTypes application extracts all the data types and data sizes for all attributes in the cube and compares them to the data types and data sizes in the cube’s data source view.  It then generates an Excel CSV file which contains all this metadata along with a flag indicating if there is a mismatch between the DSV and the dimensional attribute.  Note that the app not only checks all the attribute keys but also the name and value columns for each attribute. Another benefit of having the metadata held in a CSV text file format is that you can place the file under source code control.  This allows you to compare the metadata of the previous cube release with your new release to highlight problems introduced by new development.     I love Sublime Text editor and the ability to create code snippets like so: <snippet> <content><![CDATA[\$("${1:selector}").${2:method}]]></content> <tabTrigger>jq</tabTrigger> </snippet> This allows me to type jq[tab] and then have it expand to $("selector").method where I am able to tab through the string 'selector' and 'method' in order to change them. But what I'd really like to do is use this same snippet when working in Chrome Dev Tools, so I was looking for a mac snippets program that could support this. However, the three programs that I looked at (Keyboard Maestro, Snippets, CodeBox) don't support the ability to tab through to highlight predetermined strings and change them. Does anyone know of an app that will do this?

  • How to switch 'default' sound device controlled by hardware keys in Xubuntu?

    I installed xubuntu-desktop on a 12.04 Ubuntu upgrade after finding Gnome3 lacking. I've mostly been happy, but I've found an odd and frustrating bug. My laptop has two sound 'outputs' - an HDMI-out plug I never use, and the onboard speakers/headphones. For some reason, the hardware keys have been mapped to the HDMI output, even if I set it as 'fallback' in pavucontrol, and notify-osd only displays changes in the HDMI output (though the panel indicator volume control controls onboard sound). I'd ideally like both hardware keys and notify-osd to be looking at the onboard sound, though if I can't get notify-osd it's an acceptable loss. Having to click through a bunch of stuff to change volume is driving me crazy, though. Googling suggested that it /may/ be a Pulseaudio/ALSA conflict, but the hardware keys seem to change at least indicated volume in pavucontrol for HDMI as expected (I don't have an HDMI cable to test actual sound output)

Also app in question being 3rd-party - there's no way to change it's own CSS files. Is there a way to use per domain injected custom CSS in internet Explorer. Let's say I want to change the background-color of domain http://oldapp.localintranet/ - is there any way to make this happen? Place to put a custom.css-file? With an add-on/extension?

  • Simultaneous Animation for a GameObject - Unity3D

    Its my second week with Unity. I am doing a 2D game and I have a small GameObject which should change its sprite along with following a definite path defined in Animation Curves. I did both of them in separate .anim files since the transform animation had many keyframes, i thought it wont be good to put the '2' sprite keyframe repeatedly along side the transform keyframe. But the problem is, I cant get it both working together at the same time. I dont want any blending because the animation is timed well already. Also, I tried deleting the sprite change animation and tried it under script changing the SpriteRenderer.Sprite property under Update(); but it works only when the Animator component is disabled in the GameObject. Any Solutions ? :)

  • Switch encoding of terminal with a command

    One of the servers I quite often ssh to uses western encoding instead of utf-8 (and there's no way I can change that). I've started writing a bash script to connect to this server, so I won't have to type out the entire address every time, but I would like to improve this script so it also changes the encoding of the terminal window correctly. The change I need to do can be performed using the mouse by navigating to "Terminal"-"Set Character Encoding..."-"Western (ISO-8859-1)". Is there a terminal command that does the same thing, for the current terminal window/screen? To clarify: I'm not interested in ways of switching the locale of the system on the remote site - that system is administered by someone else, and I have no idea what stuff might depend on the latin-1 encoding there. What I want to do is to let this terminal window on my side switch character encoding to the above mentioned, in the same way I can do with my mouse and the menus.

    I have a website with dynamic content and different kind of pages. I have some pages that rarely change, and I have pages like blogs that change often. The blog pages also have links for sorting, for example sorting on date, asc, desc. On some of the pages I also have links to different tabbed content, and links that are just anchor links. Now when I use a xml sitemap generator then all the links are thrown into the site, and so I don't think all the links are really relevant. The blogposts up until now are also taken into the sitemap. Is this really necessary? I think the links to the blogposts can be indexed just fine. Is the best way to make a sitemap just to manually assign the main menu links to the sitemap, or is indexing everything really recommended?

When MUST_CHANGE keyword is used user is forced to change the password when he/she tries to login for the first time. CHECK_EXPIRATION and CHECK_POLICY are only enforced on Windows Server 2003 and later. If you want to turn off the password expiration enforcement or security policy enforcement, you can do by using the following statements.   • SQL SERVER – Storing 64-bit Unsigned Integer Value in Database

    Here is a very interesting question I received in an email just another day. Some questions just are so good that it makes me wonder how come I have not faced it first hand. Anyway here is the question - “Pinal, I am migrating my database from MySQL to SQL Server and I have faced unique situation. I have been using Unsigned 64-bit integer in MySQL but when I try to migrate that column to SQL Server, I am facing an issue as there is no datatype which I find appropriate for my column. It is now too late to change the datatype and I need immediate solution. One chain of thought was to change the data type of the column from Unsigned 64-bit (BIGINT) to VARCHAR(n) but that will just change the data type for me such that I will face quite a lot of performance related issues in future. In SQL Server we also have the BIGINT data type but that is Signed 64-bit datatype. BIGINT datatype in SQL Server have range of -2^63 (-9,223,372,036,854,775,808) to 2^63-1 (9,223,372,036,854,775,807). However, my digit is much larger than this number. Is there anyway, I can store my big 64-bit Unsigned Integer without loosing much of the performance of by converting it to VARCHAR.” Very interesting question, for the sake of the argument, we can ask user that there should be no need of such a big number or if you are taking about identity column I really doubt that if your table will grow beyond this table. Here the real question which I found interesting was how to store 64-bit unsigned integer value in SQL Server without converting it to String data type. After thinking a bit, I found a fairly simple answer. I can use NUMERIC data type. I can use NUMERIC(20) datatype for 64-bit unsigned integer value, NUMERIC(10) datatype for 32-bit unsigned integer value and NUMERIC(5) datatype for 16-bit unsigned integer value. Numeric datatype supports 38 maximum of 38 precision. Now here is another thing to keep in mind. Using NUMERIC datatype will indeed accept the 64-bit unsigned integer but in future if you try to enter negative value, it will also allow the same. Hence, you will need to put any additional constraint over column to only accept positive integer there. Here is another big concern, SQL Server will store the number as numeric and will treat that as a positive integer for all the practical purpose. You will have to write in your application logic to interpret that as a 64-bit Unsigned Integer. On another side if you are using unsigned integers in your application, there are good chance that you already have logic taking care of the same.   • Mouse pointer size problem

    My mouse cursor is double the normal size. Its only the default pointer that is enlarged. Variations like resize, busy and so on are the correct size. The problem persists even when I change cursor theme. If I move the cursor inside a Firefox window it changes to the correct size. My resolution is 2560x1440, its a single screen setup. Nvidia-settings reports my DPI to be: 108x107. I've tired to force that DPI in the LightDM conf, since I figured it must have something to-do with the DPI calculation. I have tried to change the cursor size through dconf but the problem still remains. I haven't seen this problem before, it arrived after the upgrade from Beta 2 to release version of Ubuntu 11.10. Anybody got any idea what the problem might be, its pretty annoying with the huge cursor.

    Recently I opened a case with Microsoft PSS to help us through a severe performance problem on a new system.  As part of that case, the PSS engineer checked our “max degree of parallelism” server-side setting.  It is our standard to use 4 on our production systems that have 16 CPUs (2 sockets, quad-core, hyper-threaded).  The PSS engineer had me run the below query to get Microsoft’s recommended value of “max degree of parallelism” server-side setting for our 16-CPU system: select case when cpu_count / hyperthread_ratio > 8 then 8 else cpu_count / hyperthread_ratio end as optimal_maxdop_setting from sys.dm_os_sys_info; The query returned 2.  I made the change using sp_configure, and it did not resolve our issue.  We have decided to leave it in place for now.   Do you agree with this query?  What are your thoughts on this? If you decide to change your setting to reflect the output of this query, please test it first to ensure there are no negative side effects.

How can I change so that the Jetty webserver is listening on port 80?

    at the moment i'm running ubuntu server 12.04 on top of a virtual box running as service in M$ w7x64, I've configured the shares on fstab with E /media/E vboxsf auto,rw,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 the mount is ok drwxrwxrwx 1 knoker knoker 16384 Sep 1 20:02 E but i cant change the permissions inside of /media/E ,chmod runs but doesn't do nothing. on a specific case /media/E/Docs/Downloads i have dr-xr-xr-x 1 knoker knoker 163840 Sep 1 19:30 Downloads and since i cant seem to be able to change from linux i tried it on the windows, and all users listed have full control...
