• Insert Special Characters & Coding in Online Forms in Firefox

  If you are active in forums or comment areas on different websites then you most likely use some type of special characters, HTML, or other code throughout the day. Now you can easily insert commonly used “items” with the SKeys extension for Firefox. Your New Special Text Edit Bar After installing the extension you will see the new toolbar that has been added to your browser. These are the kinds of text that can be added to online comment areas, forums, or other website areas that allow their use: Special characters HTML tags BB codes Wiki characters All that you will need to do is click on the appropriate special character or code to insert it into the website text area. The first two toolbar items are each singular in their function and insert the following types of text. A look at the special characters available for your use. The wiki code menu. The HTML menu… And the BB code menu. Here is a quick sample using the HTML menu…much better than doing it manually. This should definitely help speed things up throughout the day. Our only disappointment during testing was not being able to add additional items (i.e. characters, tags) to the toolbar at this time. Conclusion While a new toolbar may not be for everyone this extension can certainly prove useful when you need to quickly add special characters or coding in website text areas. • Transient VO : Powerful J2EE Design Pattern

  We had a use-case wherein, the communication has to happen between regions residing under differenet taskfows. Essentially, they had a common set of parameters to be used. Initially, we resorted to the  use of pageFlowScope variables, but they are tightly coupled with the individual task flows. So, how the communication has to happen..?Some of the alternatives that we brainstormed into are - 1.usage of adf contextual event - This is a powerful feature indeed for such use-cases, but there is a considerable cost involved with it. So, before resorting to it, you have to make sure that you have good enough reason to use it.It actually does a server roundtrip and also the issue of an event and listening part to it is also something which requires your attention !!2.Use a transientVO with shared data control scope - with shared data control scope, the transient VO rows would be persistent across the task flows in your application. All you have to do is to create the attributes in the transientVO(prefereably with the same names - for the ease of conversion) and create some utility methods in VOImpl for creating row, updating row and deleting a row. You also have to make sure that the vo row is initialized per http request( this you can do in a bookmark method of your index.jspx - residing in adfc-config.xml), else the ui fields binded to the transient vo attributes won't render in UI.Hope, this helps and this should be a common use-case across apps.

• So, whats the best book on C#?

  I see this question several times a day from newbie’s to professionals. I have listed the best C# books that I have read so far.   ECMA-334 C# Language Specification. – FREE book. This is probably the best place to start. Read it backwards and forwards and you can even request a hard copy. Absolute Beginners Guide to C Sharp 2nd Edition – Used this early on and found it very useful even if its game programming. C-Sharp 2.0 - The Complete Reference, 2nd Edition (McGraw-Hill, 2006) – One of the most useful books that is always with me. It contains short example code and is very well written. Dot Net Zero - Charles Petzold  - FREE book and you should definately give it a read. C Sharp in Depth by Jon Skeet -  Probably one of the most in depth books on C Sharp and definitely not for beginners. Jon Skeet knows C# like no other. I would consider this book the Bible of C#. If you understand 50% of this book, you have a good understanding of the language.  CLR via C Sharp 3rd Edition – I just started reading this book and it is another book thats not for beginners. If you really want to understand the CLR then give this book a try. Well, thats it. I hope you enjoy the books as I have spent a lot of time researching different C# books.

• Where does Rundesk execute local tasks from

  I'm trying to interact with the nodejs Azure sdk from a CentOS installation of Rundeck. If I try from the "run" adhoc virtual shell, I am able to after running azure account import <mykey> and can then also execute other Azure commands inside of jobs if I set them as Rundeck node tasks and not selecting "dispatch to nodes" in the job settings. Trying to run the Azure sdk commands as commands to be dispatched to the node (local) fails with the error: localhost1-NodeDispatch-localexec 04:53:04 /usr/bin/env: node: No such file or directory 04:53:04 Failed: NonZeroResultCode: Result code was 127 I am not able to "jumpstart" the same environment by running azure account import <mykey> I am assuming this is a permissions/environmental issue, though not sure how to fix it. UPDATE: Executing whoami from the same job returns rundeck, so I assume I will need to either modify that to execute tasks as my system user or grant permissions to get the rundeck user into the node environment the Azure sdk is running in?

If we have been friends for a while, you must know my opinions about workflows in SharePoint 2010 and SharePoint 2007. I didn’t think they were very good, especially from a performance and scalability point of view. Frankly I think Microsoft should have called them “workslows.” Though, I don’t think it was the implementation in SharePoint that was the issue, it was fundamental issues with Workflow Foundation, compounded by the nature of SharePoint that acerbated the issues. Well, I am happy to say that Workflows in SharePoint 2013 are something I feel quite comfortable recommending to anyone, and I hope to make that case in this article. Read more ..   There is an SVN repository (single repository) http://example.net/svn The repository contains several projects (directories): http://example.net/svn/Project1 http://example.net/svn/Project2 User has full access to Project1 directory and has no access neither to root nor to Project2. Everything works fine for a while: user checks out http://example.net/svn/Project1, commits and updates it successfully. But sometimes trying to update leads to the following error: Command: Update Error: Server sent unexpected return value (403 Forbidden) in response to OPTIONS Error: request for 'http://example.net/svn' Finished! Why does TortoiseSVN request something in the root??? I have noticed that this happens after somebody else committed copy or move operation. Checking out http://example.net/svn/Project1 helps till next time... The main question: How to set up access rights for user to avoid these errors? Note, it's not an option to grant user any read or write access right on the root directory for security reasons.

• Umbraco on Windows 7 64-bit

  I'm trying to install Umbraco CMS on Windows 7 64-bit and I get the following exception: [HttpException (0x80004005): Could not load file or assembly 'ImageManipulation, Version=1.0.2105.41209, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. Failed to grant minimum permission required. The application pool's trust mode is set to 'Full', all the user permissions are just as on other sites hosted on the same machine. I went through all relevant topics on Umbraco's forum, but all advices are about the trust level. How do I fix this?

  Hi All, I have recently given some quotes to a few people. And I need some advice about how things should be done... Q1: I've seen, heard of and read about a lot of developers using free resource sites online to obtain free Privacy Policy, Disclaimers etc for their/customers websites. A customer I quoted the other day expected me to write/get a disclaimer for their site. Who in their right mind would expect a document like that from a Web Developer? I just told them that they need to sort that stuff out themselves with a Lawyer or something, and then to send it to me so I can paste it on a webpage for them. Q2: If you're charging per hour, and you estimate that the project would take 1week to finish (including testing/releasing), but you soon realise that you'll require more time, do you RE-quote them? Or do you just finish off the site at the original quote price? Q3: How do you figure out how much you will charge your customers? Do you charge per-feature, or per hour, or per day, or all of the above? Thanks :)

  SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Office 365 offers two types of identities: · Microsoft Online Services cloud IDs (Cloud Identity): This is the default identity Microsoft provides you, requires no additional setup, you sign up for Office 365 and you are provided a credential. You can sign in using forms based authentication, the password policy etc. for which is stored in the cloud with the Office 365 service. The advantage obviously is no additional setup headache. The disadvantage? Yet another password to remember, and no hope of authenticated single sign on integration using this cloud identity with other services at least in the current version. · Federated IDs (Federated Identity): In companies with on-premises Active Directory, users can sign into Office 365 services using their Active Directory credentials. • Adventures in Scrum: Lesson 1 &ndash; The failed Sprint

  I recently had a conversation with a product owner that wanted to have the Scrum team broken up into smaller units so that less time was wasted on the Scrum Ceremonies! Their complaint was around the need in Scrum to have the entire “Team” (7+-2) involved in the sizing of the work during the “Sprint Planning Meeting”.  The standard flippant answer of all Scrum professionals, “Well that's not Scrum”, does not get you any brownie points in these situations. The response could be “Well we are not doing Scrum then” which in turn leads to “We are doing Scrum…But, we have split the scrum team into units of 2/3 so that they can concentrate on a specific area of work”. While this may work, it is not Scrum and should not be called so… It is just a form of Agile. Don’t get me wrong at this stage, there is nothing wrong with Agile, just don’t call it Scrum. The reason that the Product Owner wants to do this is that, in effect, through a number of miscommunications and failings in our implementation of Scrum, there was NO unit of potentially Shippable software at the end of the first sprint. It does not matter to them that most Scrum teams will fail the first Sprint, even those that are high performing teams. Remember it is the product owners their money! We should NOT break up scrum teams into smaller units for the purpose of having less people tied up in the Scrum Ceremonies. The amount of backlog the Team selects is solely up to the Team… Only the Team can assess what it can accomplish over the upcoming Sprint. - Scrum Guide, Scrum.org The entire team must accept the work and in order to understand what they can accept they must be free to size it as a team. This both encourages common understanding and increases visibility on why team members think a task is of a particular size. This has the benefit of increasing the knowledge of the entire team in the problem domain. A new Team often first realizes that it will either sink or swim as a Team, not individually, in this meeting. The Team realizes that it must rely on itself. As it realizes this, it starts to self-organize to take on the characteristics and behaviour of a real Team. - Scrum Guide, Scrum.org This paragraph goes to the why of having the whole team at the meeting; The goal of Scrum it to produce a unit of potentially shippable software at the end of every Sprint. In order to achieve this we need high performing teams and this is what Scrum as a framework has been optimised to produce. I think that our Product Owner is understandably upset over loosing two weeks work and is losing sight the end goal of Scrum in the failures of the moment. As the man spending the money, I completely understand his perspective and I think that we should not have started Scrum on an internal project, but selected a customer  that is open to the ideas and complications of Scrum. So, what should we have NOT done on our first Scrum project: Should not have had 3 interns as the only on site resource – This lead to bad practices as the experienced guys were not there helping and correcting as they usually would. Should not have had the only experienced guys offsite – With both the experienced technical guys in completely different time zones it was difficult to get time for questions. Helping the guys on site was just plain impossible. Should not have used a part time ScrumMaster – Although the ScrumMaster attended all of the Ceremonies, because they are only in 2 full days of the week it makes it difficult for the team to raise impediments as they go. Should not have used a proxy product owner. – This was probably the worst decision that was made. Mainly because the proxy product owner did not have the same vision as the product owner. While Scrum does not explicitly reject the idea of a Proxy Product Owner, I do not think it works very well in practice. The “single wringable neck” needs to contain both the Money and the Vision as well as attending the required meetings. I will be brining all of these things up at the Sprint Retrospective and we will learn from our mistakes and move on. • Which shopping cart / ecommerce platform to choose?

  I need to build an ecommerce website within a tight budget and schedule. Of course, I have never done that before, so I have googled out what my solutions are and I have concluded that the following were not valid candidates anymore : Magento : Steep learning curve osCommerce : old, bad design, buggy and not user-friendly Zencart, CRE Loaded, CubeCart : based on osCommerce Virtuemart, uberCart, eCart : based on CMS (Joomal, Drupal, WordPress) that is not necessary for my use-case So I finally narrowed down my choices to these solutions : PrestaShop : easy-to-use, great templating engine (smarty) but many modules are not free buy yet indispensable OpenCart : security issues and not a great support from the main developer. So, as you can see, I am a little bit confused and if you can help me choosing an easy-to-use, lightweight and cheap (not-necessarily free) ecommerce solution, I would really appreciate. By the way, I am a Java/Grails programmer but I am also familiar with PHP and .NET. • Is Zscalar's HTTPS Everywhere for IE affiliated with EFF?

  The Electronic Frontier Foundation has a tool called HTTPS Everywhere for Firefox, Chrome and Opera. But they don't list Internet Explorer. There is a company called Zscalar that provides HTTPS Everywhere for Internet Explorer. I can't determine if the EFF approves of Zscalar's IE extension, or if the company hijacked the EFF tool's name. The only mention of Zscalar on the EFF website is the HTTPS Everywhere Atlas. The closest I can find from Zscalar are link backs on the Zscalar website and a Zscalar PDF that points back to the EFF website. The EFF tool is free, open source and can be audited, but I don't see similar governance for Zscalar's tool. For example, I don't see mention of source code at HTTPS Everywhere for Internet Explorer. And it looks like there's a "Free Trial" for HTTPS Everywhere for Internet Explorer (see the link on the right). Is Zscalar's HTTPS Everywhere for IE affiliated with EFF?
