• HP 6350b Laptop is my battery really dead or is it a software problem

  I installed windows 7 and noticed that the battery status was "plugged in, not charging". I tried unplugging the battery, uninstalling the microsoft ACPI compliant Control Method, updating bios,windows. All to no avail. at first I tought it was related to windows 7 because it's a brand new laptop. But I also tested with a knoppix live cd, and there the output of acpi -V is this Battery 0: Unknown, 0% What else can I test to figure out what's going on.

  I want to use TCP for DNS, to bypass my ISP's slow and broken DNS servers. I'm not using (and don't want to use) a proxy. Note: I want to use DNS over TCP because if I use it over udp, no matter what server I set, I get answers from my ISP's DNS. Notice that I will fiercely downvote whoever suggests: programs to do TCP over DNS, the setting in about:config to make DNS go over the proxy too: I'm not using a proxy, use another DNS: I've already set up Google as my DNS, but I get intercepted. Any ideas on where to troubleshoot? • Remote access to server via service control panel for non-admin user in Windows 2008

  I'm trying to configure my Windows 2008 servers so that my developers can view their status without needing to log on to the box or be an admin. Unfortunately, the permissions set in Windows 2008 for remote non-admin users don't include the ability to enumerate or otherwise query services. This causes anything that contacts the SCM on the far end to fail (Win32_Service, sc.exe, services.msc etc). How do I set up permissions so that they can at least list the services and see if they are running?

To be honest, I'm not even sure where to start on this one - never guessed it would be so much trouble to add a component right from the disk.   I tried setting up ZF2 on the GoDaddy shared servers, though it doesn't work. I tried to download it directly, and using the git composer (which I managed to install successfully on the server). Yet, when there are errors and the quickfix window pops up, its status bar is cluttered up with the makeprg string: pdflatex\ \-file\-line\-error\ \-shell\-escape\ \-interaction=nonstopmode\ $*\\\|\ tee\ \/dev\/tty\ \\\|\ grep\ \-P\ ':\\d{1,5}:\ ' Is there a way of changing the quickfix title/statusbar?

• GRUB 2 freezing at OS selection screen, what could be the cause?

  Mains power is somewhat unreliable where I live, so every now and then, the computer gets rebooted when the PSU can't maintain proper voltage during a brown-out or momentary black-out. It's happened a few times recently that when power is restored, the BIOS POST completes successfully, GRUB starts to load and then freezes. I've seen this at the Welcome to GRUB! message, but it seems to happen more often just past the switch to the graphical OS list. At this point, the computer will not respond to anything (arrow keys, control commands, Ctrl+Alt+Del, ...) - it simply sits there displaying this image, seemingly doing nothing more. At that point, turning the computer off using the power button and letting it sit for a while (cooling down?) has allowed it to boot successfully. Turning the computer off and immediately back on seems to give the same result (successful POST then freeze in GRUB). This behavior began recently, although does not seem to be directly correlated with my hard disk woes (although it may be relevant that GRUB resides on that physical disk, I don't know). Once the computer has booted, it runs without a hitch. I know that a "proper" solution would be to invest in a UPS, but what might be causing behavior like this? I was thinking in terms of perhaps the CPU shutting down as a thermal control measure, but if that was the cause then wouldn't I see similar freezes during use (which I do not)? What else could cause freezes apparently closely but not perfectly related to the BIOS handover from POST to OS bootloader? The BIOS settings are to reset to previous power status after a power loss. Since the PC in question is almost always turned on, this means restore to full power status. I have no expansion cards installed that make any BIOS extensions known by screen output during the boot process, at least, but I do have a few expansion cards installed. Haven't made any changes in that regard in a long time, now. I haven't touched GRUB itself for a long time, whether configuration or binaries, so I don't think that's the problem. Also, it doesn't really make sense that a bug in GRUB would manifest itself only once in a blue moon but significantly more often after a power failure.

• gitweb on Ubuntu Server as Location/Directory instead of Virtual Host

  Since DynDNS no longer resolves subdomains for free I have use gitweb on a subdir of the apache2. Usual suspects such as Pro Git suggest something like <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName gitserver DocumentRoot /srv/gitosis/repositories/ <Directory /srv/gitosis/repositories/> Options ExecCGI +FollowSymLinks +SymLinksIfOwnerMatch AllowOverride All order allow,deny Allow from all AddHandler cgi-script cgi DirectoryIndex gitweb.cgi </Directory> </VirtualHost> I tried various variations using Location and Directory tags with different attribute combinations without any notable success. My first Idea was close to the following Alias /gitweb /srv/gitosis/repositories <Location /gitweb> AuthType Basic AuthName "gitweb Repository view" AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/gitweb.passwd Require valid-user SSLRequireSSL SetEnv GITWEB_CONFIG /etc/gitweb.conf AddHandler cgi-script cgi DirectoryIndex /usr/lib/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi </Location> Apache is in the gitosis group, the repositories are readable and executable for that group. So, what is the indended way to get websvn run on Ubuntu 10?

  I've recently noticed the following Error in my Server logs. Happens whenever Mobile device user attempts to syncrhonise using OMA. The error is logged on the server, but the user is able to sync, albeit slowly. • Can't sync iphone when sync podcasts selected

  I've gone through the following steps: Loaded up iTunes 10 on a Windows7 machine Went to iTunes store and subscribed to a podcast Selected sync podcasts Clicked sync However, it always hangs on step 1 of 3 - it just gives a status of 'Backing up' and never progresses past that. I've waited over an hour 3 times now. I'm getting so infuriated with this iTunes software; I'm afraid I might damage my PC in frustration ;-) Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.

• Apache Solr Admin on Tomcat Deployed in WebApps Directory

  I am trying to get Apache Solr to work on Redhat6 and Tomcat6 (using these instructions), but get this error when browsing to the admin section, http://localhost:8080/solr-example/admin: HTTP Status 404 - missing core name in path type Status report message missing core name in path description The requested resource (missing core name in path) is not available. http://localhost:8080/solr-example loads fine, with a link to "Solr Admin." My setup is as follows: tomcat6: /etc/tomcat6 Solr: /app/solr/example I have a solr-example.xml in /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost/, which reads: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <Context docBase="/app/solr/example/apache-solr-3.4.0.war" debug="0" crossContext="true"> <Environment name="solr/home" type="java.lang.String" value="/app/solr/example" override="true"/> </Context> I don't see anything in the logs (/var/log/tomcat6) ... only entires in catalina.out are regarding the starting and stopping of tomcat6. My questions are: 1.What else do I need to do to get "Solr Admin" to work under Tomcat? 2.Where are these "cores" supposed to be specified? I see an entry in /app/solr/example/solr/solr.xml ? <solr persistent="false"> adminPath: RequestHandler path to manage cores. If 'null' (or absent), cores will not be manageable via request handler <cores adminPath="/admin/cores" defaultCoreName="collection1"> <core name="collection1" instanceDir="." /> </cores> </solr> 3.How do I got about ensuring that logs are working correctly? I can't find logs that contain mention of the 404 above. I'm interested in any information the server can provide, like current date / time, connection status... • OSX: Python packages fail to install, error message "/usr/local/bin: File Exists"

  I keep trying to install django and other python packages, and I keep getting the exact same error message: Installing django-admin.py script to /usr/local/bin error: /usr/local/bin: File exists So I look to make sure that my /usr/local folder is okay. At first glance it appears okay, until I try cd-ing into my bin. It says it can't because it's not a directory. Peculiar, I thought, so then I tried a Anchorage:local khotchkiss$ ls -a -l total 26168 drwxr-xr-x 6 root wheel 204 Dec 26 20:18 . drwxr-xr-x@ 14 root wheel 476 Feb 24 12:54 .. -rwxr-xr-x@ 1 root wheel 13395080 Oct 22 23:04 bin drwxr-xr-x 8 root wheel 272 Dec 26 20:18 git drwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 136 Dec 18 11:31 include drwxr-xr-x 12 root wheel 408 Dec 18 11:31 lib And haven't a clue of what the 'bin' is, why its so large, and why its preventing me from installing python packages. Any clue?

I'd like to keep track of info like currently installed packages and their versions which packages are pinned at what version which source (as in /etc/apt/sources.list) they were installed from whether they were installed directly or automatically installed as a dependency of a different package "unknown unknowns": ie stuff that I don't know that I should be keeping track of but which may be important when trying to figure out why something doesn't work In short, I'd like to keep as much of the aptitude database as possible. What's the best way to do this? It would be nice if the resulting records were easily readable, though this is not really essential. It would be extra nice if it were readily versionable through an SCM tool like git. There is a superuser question that partially answers this, but it only provides the list of currently installed packages.

• httpd dead but subsys locked

  Hello, I modified today max_execution_time in php.ini, when I restarted the server, I get this error : Stopping httpd: [FAILED] Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs I killed httpd proc : killall httpd, and started it fine, but the I can't open any web site on the server. service httpd status OUTPUT : httpd dead but subsys locked I removed httpd file from /var/lock/subsys/ :S Same problem. Please Help!
