• NSFetchedResultsController Mac OSX COCOA equivalent

  Hi! I am porting some Core data code from iPhone to Mac OS X. PRoblem is that CoreData Framework on Mac OS X does not have NSFetchedResultsController.h nor NSFetchedResultsControllerDelagete protocol declared. At least I am not able to force COCOA application to see this class even if I drag Core Framework from iPhone project to link with Mac Application? Anyone faced this problem?

  I am having a frustrating time trying to do something with Perl that would take a couple of lines of code in C#, namely to call a web service on a Windows server that requires Integrated Windows Authentication. The most likely candidate I've found for success is a module called LWP::Authen::Ntlm, but all the examples I've googled require you to explicitly supply username, password and domain. I don't want to do that - I just want the request to use the credentials of the currently logged in user, a la CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials in .NET. Have any of you Perl gurus out there ever had to do this? Thanks.

I am using web services for that. the problem is that while working with my app sometimes i get some exceptions. like, Exception of type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.SoapServer.SoapServerException' was thrown. • What are the pros/cons to these 2 ways of defining parameters for a web service method

  I have an existing web service I need to expand, but it has not gone into production yet. So, I am free to change the contracts as I see fit. But I am not sure of the best way to define the methods. I am leaning towards Method 2 for no other reason than I cannot think of good names to give the parameters classes! Are there any major disadvantages to using Method 2 over Method 1? • Are there any OSGi web service / SOAP clients out there?

  I'm looking for any webservice client that can be run inside an OSGi container and connect to a simple web service using SOAP, doesn't sound so hard does it? Oh, and it has to work under Java 1.5, so the JRE jax-ws wont be present. The problem is I've tried a few solutions now, and although each solution works in standard Java using it from within OSGi doesn't. the springsource JAX-WS bundles seem to have dependency issues the CXF bundles get me as far as calling the service, but then can seem to find the stub methods in the proxy Is there anyone out there who has successfully created an OSGi webservice client?

  I'm getting a 401 (access denied) calling a method on an internal web service. I'm calling it from an ASP.NET page on our company intranet. I've checked all the configuration and it should be using integrated security with an account that has access to that service, but I'm trying to figure out how to confirm which account it's connecting under. Unfortunately I can't debug the code on the production network. In our dev environment everything is working fine. I know there has to be a difference in the settings, but I'm at a loss with where to start. Any recommendations?

There are so many jargons and chaos (at least for me!) while reading the pages about web services. • How can I consume a WSDL (SOAP) web service in Python?

  I want to use a WSDL SOAP based web service in Python. I have looked at the Dive Into Python code but the SOAPpy module does not work under Python 2.5. I have tried using suds which works partly, but breaks with certain types (suds.TypeNotFound: Type not found: 'item'). I have also looked at Client but this does not appear to support WSDL. And I have looked at ZSI but it looks very complex. Does anyone have any sample code for it? The WSDL is https://ws.pingdom.com/soap/PingdomAPI.wsdl and works fine with the PHP 5 SOAP client.

• How to efficiently implement a blocking call with Rails, while letting the client wait for the reply

  We have a web service written in Rails. The API is published and we cannot change it. Our app communicates with a remote web service that sometimes hangs or takes several seconds to reply. Client -> Our Web Service -> Remote Web Service Currently, if the remote web service hangs for 5 seconds, one of our rails processes on our web service also hangs with it, which is what we need to avoid. I've seen things such as mod-x-sendfile, modporter, and delayed jobs, but the best I can tell, they all assume the client is not waiting for an answer. Since the API is already established, we cannot tell the client "I'm attempting to do what you want, check back later for the answer." The best option we have come up with so far is to add a second, non-rails web server running eventmachine to process these particular calls. Is there a better way?

  Hello, I am learning DDD and I am a little bit lost in Infrastructure layer: As I understand, "all good DDD applications" should have 4 layers: Presentation, Application, Domain and Infrastructure. Database should be accessed using Repositories. Repository interfaces should be in Domain layer and repository implementation - in Infrastructure (reference http://stackoverflow.com/questions/693221/ddd-where-to-keep-domain-interfaces-the-infrastructure). Application, Domain and Infrastructure layer should/may have services (reference www.lostechies.com/blogs/jimmy_bogard/archive/2008/08/21/services-in-domain-driven-design.aspx), in example EmailService in Infrastructure layer which sends Email messages. BUT, inside Infrastructure layer we have repository implementations, which are used to access database. So, in this case, repositories are database services? What is the difference between Infrastructure service and repository? Thanks in advance!

• Anyone using a web service as a data source in Excel 2007?

  Can I use a web service as a data soruce for Excel pivot tables? Currently, the soure data for the pivot table is being exported from the DB to a CSV file. Then the CSV file is loaded into a worksheet in the workbook. From there, a pivot table is created in the same workbook. We are looking to streamline this process. The SQL db and pivot tables are the constants. The pivot tables are generated dynamically from a public-facing website. This is not an internal app so the preference is to not connect directly to the DB.

• Some way of getting just the data part from a web service returning a DataTable?

  I'm using an external web service that returns a DataTable. There's a couple of problems with this. The first is that there are over 20,000 columns, and .Net crashes when trying to convert the xml to a DataTable. I have to use Mono to make this work. The other problem is that it takes a lot of time to fetch all the column information. The columns "never" changes (and when they do, I know about it in advance). I would like to just fetch the data part, and load the schema from a local file. I very much doubt this is possible, but I thought I could ask here just in case.

  Deleting or moving rows for a UITableView that is backed with local data (e.g., NSArray) is easy and instantaneous: Remove the value from the array. Call deleteRowsAtIndexPaths:withRowAnimation:. Profit! But my table view communicates with a web service, which means once the "Delete" button on that row gets tapped, I have to forward a request on to the server (via ASIHTTPRequest, of course), get the response, and then tell the table view to run its little delete-row animation, all with a few seconds of latency in between. From a high-level, what's the best way to do that? Throw some callback selector into ASIHTTPRequest's userInfo dictionary? KVO? Bonus points for some nice UI touch, like some kind of spinner on the soon-to-be-deleted cell.

  I dont have any experience for web services. please give me some suggestion about the task below. the task is: users will send a txt file (size should less than 20K ) from a .NET application, I need to write a web services which runs by jboss 5.x to read this file and edit this file and send the file back to .NET UI to display the edited version. question is that if the txt file is just test string or binary string, are there any restriction of the string length? if it's binary string, can I need to use BinaryReader class to read it? or not need special reader to read it? (this could be a dumn question :P) what if the .NET application can save the file on either the .NET application server or some shared server location, send a download URL to web serivces, can web services download it and read it? JBoss will be run on Linux sever. After edit the file, how do I send it back? Thanks for your help!

• Multiple Apps Possible via Launch Services, want to Specify Particular One

  Here's the issue: I have a list of App names that I want to launch. They do not include a path (e.g. {"VLC","Microsoft Word"}. I have two different copies of VLC in different directories. I would like Launch Services to ONLY open the one from /Applications/ and not EVER launch from /Applications/AnotherDirectory I want to get the path of these, and test to see what Launch Services wants to launch (via bash with "open" or applescript via "tell _ to launch" or [NSWorkspace launch...]) The only way that I have come up with to test the path of a file about to be launched by launch services is: Applescript: tell application "Finder" to return the (posix path of (path to application "VLC" as alias)) That works fine, but launches the app (which I don't want at all). Suggestions?

This will be a 5 day blog post in getting started with SSRS. Today will show the importance of SSRS in the business. Why is SSRS asked for in so many job openings? If you talk to an SSRS expert it’s very clear to them exactly why companies really need this invention and how it saves time and adds business value. You don’t have to be an SSRS expert to know its value or to start using it. For example you don’t have to be an airline pilot to know the usefulness of modern transportation. Even the people who don’t know how to run SSRS but need the reports can tell you why that is needed. This blog post will go into why SSRS is an important invention by showing how it improves the usage of information in your company. Before SSRS there has always been a need for a company to benefit from the use of its own information. Excel spreadsheets have been a popular way to do this for a long time. With SSRS you can still use this solution and gain many other options too. A friend of mine told me a story about doing database work in the 90s for a major company and how he wished SSRS was available back then. The Vice President of the marketing channel would often come to him just before an important meeting with the board of directors. He often needed to show how certain product sales were performing over time. All this information was in the database so it was my friend’s job to get the information out and organized into a medium the VP could use. This medium was usually Excel. The VP often had meetings all over the world where he showcased this Excel report. The solution to get the VP to him anywhere he was in the world was an Excel file attached to an e-mail. This worked pretty well but with some drawbacks. One time my friend sent the wrong file in the e-mail. A few minutes later my friend realized his mistake and sent another frantic e-mail to VP. This one was saying to ignore the last e-mail and use this newer one. Would the VP see the correct e-mail in time? If SSRS had been available, my friend could have created a solution that let the VP run the report any time he wished. The report could have been published to the company intranet where the VP could run it from any of the offices he happened to be traveling to that month. There is a fair amount of work up front to develop and publish the report, but once that work is completed, the report can be reused as many times as needed. My friend could even be on vacation for the first day of the monthly and the VP can get his real-time report. Not only could the report show the most recent data, the VP could choose to view reports of previous months with just a few clicks. The deployed SSRS is user friendly, and can also be configured to protect reports from being run by the wrong people. • SQL SERVER – Unable to DELETE Project in Data Quality Projects (DQS)

  Here is the email which made me write this blog post. When I write a blog post I write keeping in mind that if the developer is not familiar with the concept he will attempt this on the development server. If due to any reason you attempt it on any other server than your personal server, developer should make sure to have complete confidence on his own expertise and understand the risk behind it.  Well, let us read the email which I received. I have modified it a bit to remove information related to organizational and individual. “I just read your blog post on Beginning DQS. I went ahead and followed every single screenshot and it worked fine. I was able to execute the DQS project successfully. However, the same blog post got me in trouble – a serious trouble. After first successful deployment I went ahead and created a few of my own knowledge base and projects. I played around a bit and then decided to get back to real work. Now we had deployed DQS on production server only, so experiment on production server. Now, when I got back to my work, I forgot to close all the windows. My manager found the window open and have seen my test projects. He has asked me to delete my experiments immediately and have said words which I cannot write to you. Here is the problem. I am not able to delete the project which I have created earlier. I am able to open it and play with it but the delete option is disabled and grayed out (see attached image). Now I believe there is nothing wrong with this project as it was just a test project. Would you please write to my manager that it is not harmful to leave that project there as it is? It is also not using any resources. I think he will believe you.” As I said this kind of email makes me uncomfortable. I do not want someone to execute anything on production server. I often write notes and disclaimer on my post when something is dangerous to execute on production server. However, if someone is not expert with SQL Server and attempts something new on production server, I think the major issue is here with the person (admin) who gave new developer permission to production server. This has to be carefully avoided. Here was my response to the individual. “I cannot write to your manager anything as he has not asked me anything. Honestly I believe he is correct in his behavior as you should have not executed anything on the production server without prior approval and testing on the development server. Any R&D must be done on local box or development box. I suggest you request your manager to prevent access to users who does not need access. If he is a good manager, he might have already implemented by now recent event. I also see your screenshot. Here is the issue: While you were playing with project, you might have closed the project half the way, without completing it. Due to the same reason it is locked. You can open and continue from the same place where you have left the project. If you do not need the project any more. Right click on it, click on unlock the project. This will enable the DELETE option and now you can delete the project. Next time, be safe out there. It may be dangerous to have admin access to production server when not needed.“ I have yet not heard from him but I believe he will take my words positively. • Can I encrypt web.config with a custom protection provider who's assembly is not in the GAC?

  I have written a custom protected configuration provider for my web.config. When I try to encrypt my web.config with it I get the following error from aspnet_iisreg aspnet_regiis.exe -pef appSettings . -prov CustomProvider (This is running in my MSBuild) Could not load file or assembly 'MyCustomProviderNamespace' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. After checking with the Fusion log, I confirm it is checking both the GAC, and 'C:/WINNT/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v2.0.50727/' (the location of aspnet_iisreg). But it cannot find the provider. I do not want to move my component into the GAC, I want to leave the custom assembly in my ApplicationBase to copy around to various servers without having to pull/push from the GAC. Here is my provider configuration in the web.config. <configProtectedData> <providers> <add name="CustomProvider" type="MyCustomProviderNamespace.MyCustomProviderClass, MyCustomProviderNamespace" /> </providers> </configProtectedData> I want aspnet_iisreg to check my ApplicationBase Bin folder for this assembly. Has anyone got any ideas?

• Graceful termination of NSApplication with Core Data and Grand Central Dispatch (GCD)

  I have an Cocoa Application (Mac OS X SDK 10.7) that is performing some processes via Grand Central Dispatch (GCD). These processes are manipulating some Core Data NSManagedObjects (non-document-based) in a manner that I believe is thread safe (creating a new managedObjectContext for use in this thread). The problem I have is when the user tries to quit the application while the dispatch queue is still running. The NSApplication delegate is being called before actually quitting. - (NSApplicationTerminateReply)applicationShouldTerminate:(NSApplication *)sender I get an error "Could not merge changes." Which is somewhat expected since there are still operations being performed through the different managedObjectContext. I am then presented with the NSAlert from the template that is generated with a core data application. In the Threading Programming Guide there is a section called "Be Aware of Thread Behaviors at Quit Time" which alludes to using replyToApplicationShouldTerminate: method. I'm having a little trouble implementing this. What I would like is for my application to complete processing the queued items and then terminate without presenting an error message to the user. It would also be helpful to update the view or use a sheet to let the user know that the app is performing some action and will terminate when the action is complete. Where and how would I implement this behavior?

• How does a java web project architecture look like without EJB3 ?

  A friend and I are building a fairly complex website based on java. (PHP would have been more obvious but we chose for java because the educational aspect of this project is important to us) We have already decided to use JSF (with richfaces) for the front end and JPA for the backend and so far we have decided not to use EJB3 for the business layer. The reason we've decided not to use EJB3 is because - and please correct me if I am wrong - if we use EJB3 we can only run it on a full blown java application server like jboss and if we don't use EJB3 we can still run it on a lightweight server like tomcat. We want to keep speed and cost of our future web server in mind. So far i've worked on two JEE projects and both used the full stack with web business logic factories/persistence service entities with every layer a seperate module. Now here is my question, if you dont use EJB3 in the business logic layer. What does the layer look like? Please tell what is common practice when developing java web projects without ejb3? Do you think business logic layer can be thrown out altogether and have business logic in the backing beans? If you keep the layer, do you have all business methods static? Or do you initialize each business class as needed in the backing beans in every session as needed?

Does it simply work the max(count) friend in common (facebook) or the max(count) follower in Twitter? or any other algorithms they implement? I think the second part is true because running the loop dict{count, person} for person in contacts: dict.add(count(common(person))) return dict(max) is a silly act in every refreshing page. 4.
