• Database backup regardless of backup made through a control panel?

  I know that all CMS or CMC platforms have some sort of walkthrough for their users to fully backup and restore the database or the whole website. While we all can perform such backups (and there are even plugins which automate the whole procedure) and restore them in necessity (such as when we migrate to a new server), one can also backup the whole website by means of such control panels as Directadmin or Cpanel. Now, I just want to know if it is necessary for us to do database or website backups the way they are described by a specific CMC or CMS developer even after we perform a whole website backup in a control panel such as DA? An example of such CMS platforms is moodle. Moodle Docs describes how we can backup and restore moodle in here. So do we, out of necessity, have to make the backup the way described, or we can simply do it the Control panel way? Thanks

However, despite the lack of Fusion Middleware specific new features in version 4.28, Remote Diagnostic Agent still comes as highly recommended. It is incredibly useful problem solving / troubleshooting aid. Support engineers dealing with Service Requests often request RDA output as it collects just about everything you might need to get a view of the state and configuration of the host operating system, network setup and Fusion Middleware components. • 301 redirect: Is this good or bad for 2 domains?

  Since i couldn't find any appropriate answer to my specific question, I wanted to ask you. I've read alot of things about the 301-redirect for moving pages and so on. A customer of mine has booked a new domain last year for better search results (he included his main keyword into the domain. Before he had only a domain with his business name, which had nothing to say about what he does). I told him, that he should do a 301-redirect so he doesn't loose his position in Google and to redirect all new customers coming from the old domain to the new domain. After about one year where his site hat a good amount of traffic the search results of Google for his keywords are getting more worse. Since he didn't maintain his website (no new content, bad content on all pages and so on) I assumed this would be the problem. He gave his website to another company which also makes websites. They told him, that this 301-redirection is very bad for his website. They removed it, and also updated his content and the template so now he has the same meta keywords on every page (instead of the specific ones I put there before). He also removed the canonical-tag which I placed there to ensure no duplicate content. What I am now afraid of is, that without this redirect Google now will find duplicate content and therefore kick him out of the index, which would be a nightmare, since most of his customers come over his website. I need verification of the fact, that the 301 isn't bad but in fact the correct way of working with 2 domains. If possible with good sources I can point out to him since he don't wants to hear anything about this. If someone also has a few words about the keywords and the canonical-tag I would really appreciate it! Thank you very much!

  Author: Debra Lilley, ACE Director, UK Proof I’m not technical -  I’ve just finished a Latin America tour with OTN and a funny thing happened that I want to share with you; because it is quite a good analogy for how many of us use technology today and you know how I love analogies. In Costa Rica we had a really long journey up through the mountains to where our conference was to be. The road was windy and narrow and once it got dark there was no scenery to see, boredom set in. At one stage I looked at my watch to see the time, but in the dark I couldn’t make it out, so I thought I would be clever and use the torch in my smartphone! Even though as soon as I switched on the phone it showed the time, I ignored it and used the torch to read my watch. That’s us when we pay maintenance on software, ask for enhancements, and either chose not to upgrade or as I have seen so many times, upgrade but don’t use the new features. I know there are always other factors not least the upgrade costs themselves but in the later releases of all the Oracle family of applications Oracle have done a lot to make the interoperability of them with Oracle Fusion Middleware more successful and in many cases for the first time. My heritage is Oracle E Business Suite (EBS) and the availability of Oracle Weblogic for EBS is fantastic for an Oracle powered organisation that can move away from supporting multiple flavours of application server. The same release made available  - the no downtime patching that Oracle Database 11g introduced with Edition Based Redefinition. I am not saying you must use these features but you must be aware of what each release of your application brings and make a business based decision as to whether it is for you or not. I like to have a simple spreadsheet of features with no-value, nice-to-have, must-have ratings, but make the spreadsheet cumulative so that when you do upgrade you have all the features listed you previously didn’t take up. • Can Remote Desktop Services be deployed and administered by PowerShell alone, without a Domain in WIndows Server 2012 and 2012 R2?

  Windows Server 2008 R2 allowed deployment of Terminal Server (Remote Desktop Services) without a domain, and without any insistence on domains. This was very useful, especially for standalone virtual or cloud deployments of a server that is managed remotely for a remote client who has no need or desire for any ActiveDirectory or Domain features. This has become steadily more and more difficult as Microsoft restricts its technologies further and further in each Windows release. With Windows Server 2012, configuring licensing for Remote Desktop Services, is more difficult when not on a domain, but possible still. With Windows Server 2012 R2 (at least in the preview) the barriers are now severe: The Add/Remove Roles and Features wizard in Windows Server 2012 R2 has a special RDS deployment mode that has a rule that says if you aren't on a domain you can't deploy. It tells you to create or join a domain first. This of course comes in direct conflict with the fact that an Active Directory domain controller should not be the same machine as a terminal server machine. So Microsoft's technology is not such much a Cloud Operating System as a Cluster of Unwanted Nodes, needed to support the one machine I actually WANT to deploy. This is gross, and so I am trying to find a workaround. However if you skip that wizard and just go check the checkboxes in the main Roles/Features wizard, you can deploy the features, but the UI is not there to configure them, and when you go back to the RDS configuration page on the roles wizard, you get a message saying you can not administer your Remote Desktop Services system when you are logged in as a Local-Computer Administrator, because although you have all admin priveleges you could have (in your workgroup based system), the RDS configuration UI will not accept those credentials and let you continue. My question in brief is, can I still somehow, obtain the following end result: I need to allow 10-20 users per system to have an RDS (TS) session. I do not need any of the fancy pants RDS options, unless Microsoft somehow depends on those features being present. I believe I need the "RDS Session Host" as this is the guts of "Terminal Server". Microsoft says it is "full Windows desktop for Remote Desktop Services client. I need to configure licensing so that the Grace Period does not expire leaving my RDS non functional, so this probably means I need a way to configure TS CALs. If all of the above could technically be done with the judicious use of the PowerShell, I am prepared to even consider developing all the PowerShell scripts I would need to do the above. I'm not asking someone to write that for me. What I'm asking is, does anyone know if there is a technical impediment to what I want to do above, other than the deliberate crippling of the 2012 R2 UI for Workgroup users? Would the underlying technologies all still work if I manipulate and control them from a PowerShell script? Obviously a 1 word Yes or No answer isn't that useful to anyone, so the question is really, yes or no, and why? In the case the answer is Yes, then how.

• Listing Desktop Apps in the Windows 8 Store

  So it looks like Microsoft will be allowing publishers to list their desktop apps in the Windows 8 Store.  As per the developer agreement: b. Desktop App Submission. You may submit an app description for one or more desktop apps to the Windows Store. Notwithstanding anything else in this agreement, you understand that Microsoft will not offer any desktop apps through the Store and only Windows Store apps are made available through the Windows Store. Microsoft may, but is not required to, list the desktop app in the Windows Store together with a link you provide, to a website where users can acquire the app. You are solely responsible and agree to maintain that website and provide an updated link to Microsoft if the url changes. Desktop apps are any apps built using APIs other than the APIs for Windows Store apps that run on Windows 8. As the agreement states, Microsoft will not distribute desktop apps through the store, but they will provide a link to a website where users can download your desktop app.  If nothing else, it is a great way to advertise your app.  Hopefully this doesn’t cause any confusion with consumers.  Will end users understand why some apps install automatically while others just send you to a website?

• Javascript widgets: do links count as SEO backlinks? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How good is it for SEO if you have a widget that lives on other sites? On my website I offer an option to let users embed information from my site with some kind of "homepage widget". If a user wants to embed it in his website, he basically has to add one line of Javascript to his HTML files like this: <script src="http://mysite.com/myscript.php?some_options_here"></script> Inside the widget, I export some content from my website and of course create a link back to my website. This is done in Javascript with document.write. document.writeln("My great exported content"); document.writeln('<a href="http://mysite.com?ref=widget>Check mysite.com</a>'); I have Google Analytics set up to track whether the links in there get clicked, and they do. Now I am asking myself if Google recognizes these links as valid backlinks from the embedding domain. I know that Googlebot can parse and execute Javascript, but I have not found any references whether these links also count as "normal" backlinks.

• Photos being copied all over the place

  We have a rather popular website with plenty of photos. Our whole business depends on our content - and the photos are important in this. We invest a lot of time, effort, and money into taking these pictures. On our website we have clear copyright notices, we have the website name and logo in the photos, and we have a Photo Licensing page which states the prices of licensing our photos. Despite all this, our photos are copied by personal and commercial websites alike. We really want to do something about this. We do not want them to take out the photos and leave it at that. We want them to pay for the usage, as we clearly state on our website. Now a few questions come to mind: Can we legally force them to pay right away? Or are we obligated to first write a "Cease and Desist" letter? Photos are used on websites throughout the world. Are there any worldwide rules for this? Has anybody experience with doing these things outside of their home country? Should we hire a lawyer in any country? Or could a local lawyer contact oversees companies directly?

We have two websites configured in IIS 6 pointing to two different static IPs for the past couple days website A's IP address began to resolving to website B's ip address. It seemed to happen all of a sudden. When we looked at IIS the IPs looked to be configured correctly but when we would ping the websites both would point to website B's IP. Any ideas?

Static is a sub-application using a not managed application pool. On Website bindings I've set local.domain.com to have access through port 80. I want to access the Static app using static.domain.com, but I don't find the option to configure the binding. How is it possible to configure like that?

• .htaccess causes 403 error

  I have a working website on a free shared server. I decided to hire a dedicated server and purchase a domain for my website. I started uploading the files but things aren't working the way they should. First of all .htaccess is not working, however I set AllowOverride from None to All in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default DocumentRoot /var/www <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory /var/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> I restarted the server of course. I enabled mod_rewrite: a2enmod rewrite and restarted the server. This change causes a 403 forbidden access error which I am unable to work out. If I change the All back to None then .htaccess is ignored so instead of loading the website the file hierarchy is loaded (the main page is index4.php which should be opened by .htaccess). If I rename index4.php to index.php the website loads, just fyi. The permissions on the file is 600. If I change it to 444 I get 500 Internal Server Error. I checked the logs and I see many errors of this: Permission denied: file permissions deny server access: /var/www/index.html

• Setting up Virtual Host in Fedora Core 15 using apache

  I'm trying to setup a couple of Virtual Host files on my Localhost PC running Fedora Core 15. Now I get this working, but now onloy one Virtual Host site works, and if I type in 127.0.0.1/test/testApp.php which is not related to the Virtual Host site , I get redirected to the Virtual Host site. Here's what I did. I created a new folder called virtualhosts in /etc/httpd/ where all my host files are stored in the following format site.conf In /etc/conf/httpd.conf I enabled NameVirtualHost *:80 and included the host files at the bottom of the config page like this Include virtualhosts/*.conf In /etc/hosts I added the line 127.0.0.1 website No when I run sudo httpd -t I get Syntax OK I restart apache and then the Virtualhost works, but as soon as I add other hosts and only use 127.0.0.1 as above it still links to the original host. Am I doing anything wrong here or left out something? • Expression Blend + Sketchflow Preview for Microsoft Visual Studio 2012

  Expression Blend has released a preview version of Blend that addresses some of the missing features of the version of Expression Blend that ships with VS 2012.   Here is a download to the preview version that has a lot of the features that were missing in the shipped version.  My suggestion is that anyone that works with Xaml and VS 2012 download this version of Blend  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30702
