• As a consultant should I charge my clients for developing specs?

  I'm trying to transition into some programming consulting work. A friend of my former employer is interested in having me "develop a spec," which I take to mean come up with some technology requirements and time estimates (e.g. milestones). Do developers normally charge for this? I'm imagining it's basically the same kind of workload that creating a bid for a project would take. On one hand, consultants don't get paid for the time they put into the legwork of a bid. On the other hand, this is probably go to be more than a couple hours of work, and my time is valuable. Any advice? Any sites besides SO I could go to get advice with this kind of stuff? (Sorry if this isn't programming-related enough for StackOverflow! I don't know where else to get advice!)

• How does one go about understanding GNU source code?

  I'm really sorry if this sounds kinda dumb. I just finished reading K&R and I worked on some of the exercises. This summer, for my project, I'm thinking of re-implementing a linux utility to expand my understanding of C further so I downloaded the source for GNU tar and sed as they both seem interesting. However, I'm having trouble understanding where it starts, where's the main implementation, where all the weird macros came from, etc. I have a lot of time so that's not really an issue. Am I supposed to familiarize myself with the GNU toolchain (ie. make, binutils, ..) first in order to understand the programs? Or maybe I should start with something a bit smaller (if there's such a thing) ? I have little bit of experience with Java, C++ and python if that matters. Thanks!

After 15 years in the industry, I still suck at answering the question "How long do you think X will take?" For scheduling purposes, we always have to give an estimate of how long different sub-tasks in a project will take. What's the best way to get better at estimating how long it will take to do something? Some people are really good at this. Are there any books, techniques or whatever that people use to get better at this?

• What is the easiest way to reference libraries in Qt projects?

  I have two Qt4 Gui Application projects and one shared library project, all referenced under a .pro file with the "subdirs" template. So, it's like: exampleapp.pro app1.pro app2.pro sharedlib.pro Now, what I want to do is reference sharedlib from app1 and app2 so that every time I run app1.exe, I don't have to manually copy sharedlib.dll from its own folder to app1.exe's folder. I could set PATH environment variable in the projects window, but this isn't very portable. I've looked at putting the LIBS variable in the app1.pro file, but I'm not sure if that refers to statically linked libraries only - I've tried it with various syntaxes and it doesn't seem to work with shared libs.

• Fibonacci Sequence using loop and recur

  I am doing the Project Euler challenge in Clojure and I want to find the sum of all the even numbers in a fibonacci sequence up to a certain number. The code for a function that does this is below. I know there are quicker and easier ways of doing this, I am just experimenting with recursion using loop and recur. However the code doesn't seem to work it never returns an answer. (defn fib-even-sum [upto] (loop [previous 1 nxt 1 sum 0] (if (or (<= upto 1) (>= nxt upto)) sum) (if (= (mod nxt 2) 0) (recur nxt (+ previous nxt) (+ sum nxt)) (recur nxt (+ previous nxt) sum)))) I was not sure if I could do recur twice in the same loop or not. I'm not sure if this is causing the problem?

• Getting Prepared/Planning

  For the first time, I am trying to create a rather large .NET project. I think the largest one I have made so far was about 6 classes, but this one is already at 14. For the section I'm starting to work on, I'm having some trouble putting everything together in my head, which is what I normally do. I think it's just a little too complex for that. I want to plan it out, and I want some way to visualize it and be able to play with it and manipulate the structure easily. Is there any sort of (free) program I can use to do this?

  vim comes with a nice built-in interactive tutorial. You can access this tutorial by just running: $ vimtutor It is very easy to use because it creates working cases for basic commands. Is there a more advanced tutorial? Has any one though to build one to help uses take their VIM skills to the next level. Most tutorial and cheat-sheet sites out there for vim only show commands but not necessarily specific uses and examples. Is there an advance tutorial out there? Is this the type of project that could be an open source document that everyone can add examples to? Like a Vim Interactive Wiki or similar to the RegEx sites that have the built in regex testers.

• How can I maximally partition a set?

  I'm trying to solve one of the Project Euler problems. As a consequence, I need an algorithm that will help me find all possible partitions of a set, in any order. For instance, given the set 2 3 3 5: 2 | 3 3 5 2 | 3 | 3 5 2 | 3 3 | 5 2 | 3 | 3 | 5 2 5 | 3 3 and so on. Pretty much every possible combination of the members of the set. I've searched the net of course, but haven't found much that's directly useful to me, since I speak programmer-ese not advanced-math-ese. Can anyone help me out with this? I can read pretty much any programming language, from BASIC to Haskell, so post in whatever language you wish.

• Have I checked every consecutive subset of this list?

  I'm trying to solve problem 50 on Project Euler. Don't give me the answer or solve it for me, just try to answer this specific question. The goal is to find the longest sum of consecutive primes that adds to a prime below one million. I use wrote a sieve to find all the primes below n, and I have confirmed that it is correct. Next, I am going to check the sum of each subset of consecutive primes using the following method: I have a empty list sums. For each prime number, I add it to each element in sums and check the new sum, then I append the prime to sums. Here it is in python primes = allPrimesBelow(1000000) sums = [] for p in primes: for i in range(len(sums)): sums[i] += p check(sums[i]) sums.append(p) I want to know if I have called check() for every sum of two or more consecutive primes below one million The problem says that there is a prime, 953, that can be written as the sum of 21 consecutive primes, but I am not finding it.

  I'm particularly looking for input from managers of ongoing C++ projects: Have you already adopted C++0x? If so, what has your experience been like? If you haven't adopted C++0x yet, are you planning to? If so, what is your timeline (in rough terms)? Are there any obstacles that are holding you back from adopting C++0x? • Is my program taking too much time to execute?

  I wanted to solve a question from project euleur about finding the largest prime number of a big number. I run my code on a virtual machine on Visual studio 2012, and the code seems froze. When I step into the loop, the code works well, but when I execute it, the console is always there. It is as if the program is still running. Could it be that the program takes time to execute? • Should a company prevent employees from publishing an app in an appstore in their free time?

  My company is trying to pass a policy forbidding distribution of any application (even free) in any appstore for all developers. Their reasoning is that "outside work activities create a conflict of interest". They don't want that "you use your spare time to work on your app, and once it takes off you quit your job" (quoting the Head of Development). A few developers (myself included) have already said it was an abusive, pointless and most of all counter-productive policy (developers will actually be demotivated to work here under such control and to be denied of the freedom to distribute their project). Personally, I think it is actually in the interest of the company to promote side projects (even commercial activities, if there is no conflict). I'm also curious, is that common practice?

• Wrong shortcut icons on the desktop and in the programs menu

  When creating a program setup, I also put some documentation or readme files in it. However after the program is installed, I get wrong icons on the desktop and in the programs menu, as below: What I expected: I thought that for the registered file types (such as pdf, txt, doc, etc.) I don't need to set icons manually in the setup project. Am i wrong? As far as I know some other installers doesn't have such problem. Does anybody know how to fix this for Visual Studio? My environment is: Visual Studio 2005, C#, Windows XP Pro SP3

• Should I allow my clients to open tickets/access trac?

  I just installed trac for this project I'm working on, since it's turned out to be a bit bigger than I anticipated. I've added a bunch of tickets with my clients requests which come in the form of emails, phone calls, and meetings. I've also added some stuff I know needs to be done/fixed but they haven't specifically requested. Should I grant them access to trac so they can submit the tickets themselves so I don't have to keep translating (words into tickets) for them? They're very non-technical, so I'm not sure how well it would work; they might open tickets and not provide enough detail, or get confused by all the different fields. If your answer is "no", should I at least let them view the tickets, so they can see what I'm working on, what's been done, hasn't been done? So they can stop calling me to say "xxx doesn't work" when it's already a ticket? (Not that this would work, but I could at least respond "see ticket #42")

I have solved many Project Euler problems, but the Pandigital problems always exceed the one minute rule.   Hi. I will build an application, that will be like a mix from a trojaner and a remote tool. It will be a spy programm for our company, so the IT Admin and Managment can see what the people are doing or not. (Only for explayning, please don't discuss about "uhhh tahts not ok"). I must choose a language for that. My best knowlegde is in C#.Net and VB.Net, but one main feature should be: No framework must be installed - so DotNet is out of the run. I decided to VB6 and a few minutes ago I ask for a IDE and some people say: Don't use it, it's too old. So, I must ask: What language do you prefer for such an project?

• Multiplying numbers on horizontal, vertial, and diagonal lines

  I'm currently working on a project Euler problem (www.projecteuler.net) for fun but have hit a stumbling block. One of the problem provides a 20x20 grid of numbers and asks for the greatest product of 4 numbers on a straight line. This line can be either horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. Using a procedural language I'd have no problem solving this, but part of my motivation for doing these problems in the first place is to gain more experience and learn more Haskell. As of right now I'm reading in the grid and converting it to a list of list of ints, eg -- [[Int]]. This makes the horizontal multiplication trivial, and by transposing this grid the vertical also becomes trivial. The diagonal is what is giving me trouble. I've thought of a few ways where I could use explicit array slicing or indexing, to get a solution, but it seems overly complicated and hackey. I believe there is probably an elegant, functional solution here, and I'd love to hear what others can come up with.

• Does Team Foundation support cross-app workitem groups?

  We're currently using Visual Source Safe and BugNet and looking to migrate up and away from VSS. I've been pushing for either SVN ( a) we're an ASP.NET shop, b) DCVS is not an option - no matter how much I like Hg ;-) or TFS. Well we finally got a new dev server, so I talked the boss into installing TFS on it (30 day trial). In the meantime, we had started experimenting with FogBugz. We really like FogBugz for about 80% of what we want to do, and the other 20% is probably stuff that we don't know what we want. I'm pushing for TFS because it allows for IDE integrated (mostly) everything. He's pushing for FogBugz because he can group tasks by customer and then project and manage everything from one dashboard. (which means I lose most of my IDE integration - no huge loss I agree) Does TFS support a single dashboard that would span all our solutions (in this case each solution is a full app that we sell to a vertical market client) and let us assign workitems to each solution-spanning-group? So for instance I think we envision something like this: PROJECT1 - Bugtracker and workitems PROJECT2 - Bugtracker and workitems PROJECT3 - Bugtracker and workitems CUSTOMER1 - Deployment schedules, required features, specific notes (Uses PROJECT1, PROJECT2) CUSTOMER2 - Deployment schedules, required features, specific notes (Uses PROJECT2, PROJECT3) CUSTOMER3 - Deployment schedules, required features, specific notes (Uses PROJECT1, PROJECT3) Hopefully that makes sense. naturally it's more complicated than this but I think I've given the details enough to paint a picture. I offered the option of creating dummy projects per customer but he doesn't like that and it doesn't really give us the single dashboard view that we're hoping to end up with (and that FogBugz as we've sorta implmented things does do now). Has anyone got a good suggestion on a management app that would accomplish what both of us want?

• Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g is Here!

If you missed it, you may still watch it via our on demand webcast, which is being produced and will be posted very shortly. 11gR1 is a major release of Oracle Enterprise Manager, and as one would expect from a big release, there are many new capabilities that appeal to a broad set of audience. Before going into the laundry list of new features, let's talk about the key themes for this release to put things in perspective. First, this release is about Business Driven Application Management. The traditional paradigm of component centric systems management simply cannot satisfy the management needs of modern distributed applications, as they do not provide adequate visibility of whether these applications are truly meeting the service level expectations of the business users. Business Driven Application Management helps IT manage applications according to the needs of the business users so that valuable IT resources can be better focused to help deliver better business results. To support Business Driven Application Management, 11gR1 builds on the work that we started in 10g to provide better support for user experience management. This capability helps IT better understand how users use applications and the experience that the applications provide so that IT can take actions to help end users get their work done more effectively. In addition, this release also delivers improved business transaction management capabilities to make it faster and easier to understand and troubleshoot transaction problems that impact end user experience. Second, this release includes strengthened Integrated Application-to-Disk Management. Finally, this release delivers Integrated Systems Management and Support for customers of Oracle technologies. Traditionally, systems management tools and tech support were separate silos. When problems occur, administrators used internally deployed tools to try to solve the problems themselves. If they couldn't fix the problems, then they would use some sort of support website to get help from the vendor's support staff. Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g integrates problem diagnostic and remediation workflow. Administrators can use Oracle Enterprise Manager's various diagnostic tools to begin the troubleshooting process. They can also use the integrated access to My Oracle Support to look up solutions and download software patches. If further help is needed, administrators can open service requests from right within Oracle Enterprise Manager and track status update. Oracle's support staff, using Enterprise Manager's configuration management capabilities, can collect important configuration information about customer environments in order to expedite problem resolution. This tight integration between Oracle Enterprise Manager and My Oracle Support helps Oracle customers achieve a Superior Ownership Experience for their Oracle products. So there you have it.
